ugh!
hearing all of this about the evo is really getting to me! i have been very content with my hero and the wonderful roms from the devs here. my contract is up the first of next year and i was fine waiting until then... i just found out that my area is on the 4g list for this summer. it is getting very hard for me to resist!
if the devs are able to exploit and root the evo quickly it will be even more difficult for me.
cheers,
ryan

Just my guess here. EVO Has root within 3 weeks of shipping. I think there will be some people who don't sleep till it happens.

Just like those Sprint leaks with screenshots saying Moment will get 2.1 on April 30th and Hero first week in May eh? Fail.

ok so about 4 days ago i switched to sprint from tmobile after having to sell my nexus i bought outrite cuz i dont qualify for a account other than the completley pre paid flex pay monthly plan so i didnt get any discount n i spent money i didnt have on the nexus 560$ all together after shipping so i sold it cuz i needed money for my newborn son n i managed to get back 400$ back n i went to sprint asking bout the evo n they ran my credit n i got approved so they gave me a hero to use until the evo comes out then today i heard bout being able to pre order . so i went to radio shack n they pre ordered the evo for me n told me i was the first one in my area to do so . so meaning i will have the first evo they get in n i cant wait . i must admit im liking the hero but coming from my nexus its a major downgrade but with sprints service n the money im saving on my monthly n the fact of just knoing im getting the evo has made the transition alot easier .im new to the hero but not new to android i have had a moto droid verizon n 3 g1's 2 mt3g's 1 nexus n now the hero n i cant wait until i get the evo . im kinda new to xda n just wanted to say hello n make my first post on the hero cdma thread .

Yo yo yo,
Hello everyone I was just wondering if anyone is upgrading to a new phone or has already... I love my hero but I've been itching for a new one for the past 6months lol. And tomorrow is my full eligible upgrade date.
Who s upgraded or plans too? which phone you getting the evo? Or should I wait for the evo 3D? (Idk if I can wait) Or shoot heard tthe atrix might be coming to sprint ...
What's your advices??? >:-D

I also am waiting, but getting very anxious.
I like the dual core 1.2 with the 3d, but the 3d camera seems a bit stupid...
I have looked at the Evo forums and there are some nice roms going on over there...
Ya man idk I think the 3D camera is an alright touch especially for like a family stand point I know my niece and nephew would love to record and see the 3D effect on the phone... but ya the dual is what I think waiting for would make the wait worth it .... I thought I had to wait till April 15th and I just checked they said tomorrow.... spool tempting to just go get the evo lol

I've been sitting on an upgrade for a few months. I've come so close to just giving in and getting the EVO, especially after the disappointment of the Kyocera Echo announcement. By no means do I think that the EVO is an inferior device, but after hearing about the EVO 3D, I know its going to be my next phone. And CM7 on my Hero makes it possible for me to get through the next couple months without throwing my phone against the wall. Well that and the fact that my backup device would be my old Samsung Instinct S30

i think the evo 3d is gonna be a beast, even the i phone 5 cant match up against it, trust me wait for it, cause i've just got my upgrade & im waiting for the summer to come
6:30am est sprint.com still shows I'm eligible for upgrade /me sees possible launchday evo3d

Defiantly going to try and wait for the 3D, the new ginger roms by AOSP have been pretty stable and smooth. I can handle waiting for another few months. :-D
SPRINT put up the release date/pre-order options
thanks guys for your thoughts and the 3D is going to be baller.
I'm going for the EVO 3D when it hits. I didn't get the EVO when it came out and opted for the Hero instead. I won't make that mistake again. I really like the Hero for the most part, but no matter what ROM it's too limited with the processor an memory.
I've had the Hero from the moment that it came out. Been waiting for that dual processor phone. So for me it will be the Evo 3D. I can live without the 3D, but the performance of that phone is what I'm after. I'll probably have that phone for another year and a half. With the great developers on this forum my Hero has actually been a gem. While my friends were going out and getting the Evo last summer I just kept upgrading the roms on my hero. The Evo 3D should be no different. I just hope it's out by June!
I've had my upgrade for a month now and nearly blew it all when I went to upgrade to an Epic 2 days before the Evo 3D was announced. Luckily, a friend of mine was a few days late on his bill so it wouldn't let me purchase the Epic! Haha
I'm can't wait for this thing to come out. With all that hardware I'm not sure I'll know what to do with it!
I have heard that it will be out in June released on the anniversary of the EVO.
Just came up on my upgrade today. It's a toss up between the Nesux S or the Evo 3d, Just wish they'd hurry up with a release date damnit

I am exactly the same. Had the phone since day one and have been waiting for a dual core since. Even when the EVO came out, there was talk about a dual core and I figured I would just wait for that. The 3D will have some flash that will be fun for a short period but the hardware sounds like it will be top notch plus it is HTC.
Sprint notified me via letter today that I would no longer have service after the 5th of July. I moved out of Sprint's service area around September of last year and knew this was coming eventually. I am actually shocked it took so long .
As sad as I am to leave Sprint and my Evo; I must move forward!
That being said, what phones are on the horizon? I will probably switch to Verizon because they still have unlimited data. I'm not adverse to prepaid as those services have come a long way in the last few years.
I am liking the Thunderbolt, as it is the most similar to our Evos.

Nope and nope, bummer really. Not a lot of choices here in Arkansas, especially in a smaller town. I remember when it was just Alltel and $0.25 a minute lol.
When are dual core phones going to explode? There doesn't seem to be many on the market. I want something with some serious XDA support of course. There is no way I could run a stock Android phone anymore .

Wow... $250?.. really? nearly mint EVO's in my area are going for $150. something like that would be asking for a trade of a blackberry or HTC Magic. lol
ok, not to get off topic, but in other areas are people on craigslist asking for iPhone 3GS or 4's for "every better phone ever"?
it seems like whenever I go on, I see someone going "I'll trade my stupid, dumb EVO 4G for an iPhone 3GS"

I haven't really heard of any dual core on Verizon except for the droid bionic which probably will have a locked bootloader so it might get rooted or might not. At&t should have Galaxy S2 by then or the HTC Sensation on T Mobile hoping that its shipped with a unlocked bootloader.

Thank you for this
I'll cut to the chase.
I'm on Verizon currently mulling a switch to Sprint as a money saver.
Strongly considering the Evo as I can get it for a penny on Amazon.
Owning an Incredible and a NookColor, I know just about everything I need to know about rooting, blah blah, etc.
Just one question, on Evo ROMs, is 4G actively working? Say CM7 for example?
and is the root process the same? Unrevoked or am I out of the loop?
Yes, you can use unrevoked.
And yes, 4G works in cm7.

Ahh..not really. The latest Gingerbread update broke unrevoked. Currently there is no root exploit for the updated firmware. It's been that way for about a month. Many have confirmed that new Evo's are being shipped with 2.3.3 so until an exploit is found, if you get a new Evo you will not be able to root it.

From what I hear the unrevoked team is working on it, but no ETA and scant information has been revealed. I'm waiting on a root to be discovered as well so I can exchange mine due to a few bright spots on the screen, but they are tolerable vs. giving up my rooted phone.

not that i am aware of due to the fact none of the HTC 2.3.3 phones have been hacked yet. Maybe you could sell your vzw phone and buy a rooted evo off here or ebay or maybe craigslist. If you do tho gotta get the number checked to make sure its able to be activated on sprint and not black listed. Or if you wanted to you could get the evo 3d (which there has been strides on is being worked on very diligently so that it can be rooted.) I know you probally dont want to spend 200 but if you ported your number before 7/23 you can still get 125 credit.
http://www.sprint.com/landings/portcredit/?ECID=vanity:switchtosprint
also i beleave sprint will buy your phone at the moment for 72 bucks
with their buy back program which would leave you with a while 3 dollars you would have to pay for the phone. BUT I would suggest you do this very very soon.! hope you go through with it and enjoy if you want to check out the evo 3d many top devs have moved and some will probally move sooner or later just about the funds.
https://secure2.sprintbuyback.com/c...onid=2BEA87BD9605B2DCB255C5F7903FCEE3.server1
let us know if you joned sprint back here in the evo forums hope this helps you out man!
(ps if you are a member of a credit union or AAA ask if they have any eligble discounts or for your work to reduce your bill)
Spend the extra money and buy the 3D. You will thank yourself in the long run.
So I hear Sprint's network kinda blows, any info on this?
I know it's no Verizon but is it acceptable, gets the job done or downright miserable like AT&T?
I think it gets the job done but it is depends on your area also. I can watch netflix and tether and i have no complaints about it.

If you get an evo with 2.2, you can use unrevoked, if 2.3, there is no root for it yet and you'll be stuck. As for CM7, everything thing works, except MIUI, because it has no 4G. And I thought I was Marino.

Okay I have the $7 sprint insurance and my phone fails to connect to the sprint network(unrooted and stock 2.1).
I went to the sprint store today and they said they fixed it because the PRL was outdated blah blah blah....and the pohne worked fine.... for 2 hours then it failed again.
I chatted with sprint about it and a rep told me to go to the sprint store to get a new hero(he first offered me a refurb instinct! because he did not have any refurbs for the hero).
So tomorrow I have to go to the store again to claim a new hero.... but I'm 99.9% sure I won't see it since its discontinued.
What phone should I ask for if the hero is not in stock? (I am not asking for an evo or evo 3d just the next comparable phone that replaced the hero)
definitely do not get the instinct worst phone ever lol. if anything try and squeeze the lg optimous s out of them, it was very similar to the hero accept it didn't have sense, if they don't have any heroes in stock that is.

LG Optimus is very similar spec to the hero but better for some reason. Also has a real proximity sensor, still doesn't do flash. This would be a sidegrade though, you should shoot higher, sometimes the reps are good about that.
EVO 3D would be ideal but aim for a EVO Shift
Instinct is a big NO WAYYYY!!! That phone almost had me give up my cell phone and get a landline again it was so bad. The Optimus is a decent phone. My son has one and he generally likes it, however it doesn't have a large developer following so your ability to stick with it for the duration of your contract could be problematic.....if your contract extends beyond the next 6 months or so.

If his Hero is stock he'd probably be happy with an Optimus.....Agreed there. The Hero has been a lot more fun for me to tinker with though IMO.

Last time I checked (about a month ago) Aosp was primarily for the Optimus V some reports were that it would run on the S but it was buggy as hell and required the hard buttons remapped.... There were only 2 roms at the time worthy of a daily driver (stock & 1 custom). There were ony a couple of custom kernel choices and very few tweaks. It's also quite cumbersome to root (had to follow like 5 seperate threads and the screen is totally blank for 3/4 of the process). Please don't get me wrong it's not a bad phone, but if you're used to all of the customization of the Hero (like me)....I personally find it somewhat dissapointing.
***EDIT*** To be fair and objective since I don't give my son's Optimus the same love & TLC as our other phones & Nooks. I just popped over to Android Central to have a fresh look around. It seems like the rooting proccess has improved substantially in the past month and there are a couple of flashable "Sprint fixes" for the Aosp rom. Also new since I last visited is a unofficial beta CM7.....For what it's worth.
I sat down and had a beer with an old friend last night, he told me he had a samsung moment and since they didnt have that phone in stock he got an epic 4g.
They offered him a keyocera android phone and he said he paid for a high end samsung phone when it came out...not a keyocera.
I played with the optimus at the store and I like it...my upgrade is in 2 months...if they're feeling nice and let me renew my contract I'll get an evo 3d.
But an optimus S will be fine
I only need two things...my dish network tv everywhere app and pandora...
Lol.... this is what they offered me directly from my sprint web transcript
I can offer you one out of below mentioned refurbished phones for free. The contract will not be renewed. Once your phone will be eligible for upgrade, you may upgrade:
LG Lotus(Refurbished)
SANYO SCP-3810 (Refurbished)
Samsung Reclaim(Refurbished)
SCP-2700 by Sanyo (Refurbished)
Samsung Instinct (Refurbished)
Going to the sprint store soon... 1 hour drive... hope I get this solved once and for all.
Been around 9-10 hours without service

Right now im using the hero over wifi since the 3g radio fails to connect... if i get a new hero i will root it and flash ginger deck with gapps... the thing feels clunky as hell on stock 2.1
Right now the fastest battery friendly rom is ginger deck right? Any other roms worth trying?

Are those builds stable enough to be used daily? I really don't need eye candy on the phone...just battery life.
Cant wait til friday to reroot my hero!
Off topic but i just started using the xda forum app and its amazing!

i would use aospcmod and set it to 3520-691 ondemand and your battery will last forever.
Well lets wait and see if I get the new phone on Friday. 99.9% guaranteed i'll get a refurb but meh its worth avoiding the $100 deductible from asurion.
Played with the optimus in the store again... the thing flies on stock 2.2.
Played with the evo shift and the slider feels firm compared tot he epic which feels cheap in the hand.
Going to use my upgrade towards the Galaxy S II or Motorola photon on september or whenever the phones are out

I haven't had really a single issue with cm nightly in months.
Hey guys jut to let you know the nexus is free from sprint T-Mobile and att today only at bestbuy as we'll as best but online ...just wanted to share for any of you on the fence . Personally I think this phone is a steal with a free price tag. As it will have the latest update come ice cream sandwich. Will probably give it to my girl after the gs2 is released =]
yep. taking my wife to BB later today. she's still on the hero & complains about it all the time.
If I can get my wife to get off the Crack(berry) I would love to get her into a Nexus S 4G. At least her GTalk will work and she will have WiFi.
The hero, I still use it....as an object to put on top of documents..
If only I were eligible for an upgrade...

lmao I kept the hero as a "back up phone" ...just in case something happens to my evo..
funny thing is that when the evo 4g came out, I bought it and for some reason I was in love with my hero and at the time the evo 4g had issues so i got rid of it and kept the hero ..then i got an evo for a cheap price and kept it..but that one took a fall and you know the rest of the story..so i went back to the hero....
and the story goes something like that and I ended up with an evo 4g again..
I'm now debating if I should buy the Moto Photon 4G or wait for another phone..
So this is for the Upgrade? My wife is up for hers. She is still rockin the Samsung Instinct

Just picked up the Nexus S with 2.3.4, and it upgraded to 2.3.5. All for the price of FREEE. Nothing like getting a $700 phone for nothing. Thanks for posting this thread!

but i can just sign a new contract? like start this contract over again? or i cant already have a contract going and have to sign a brand new contract for the first time..im confused lol....can i go in there with my evo 4g and "re-sign" a "new" 2 yr contract, so to speak... and walk out with a free nexus?
Guys, why don't you just wait for Samsung Galaxy S II instead and upgrade to that when it comes out? Getting a 2-year contract for a Nexus S doesn't seem worth it with the Galaxy S II coming soon.

That's what I was thinking.. Read on cnet this morning that the SGSII will be out either by the EOM or next month.. Also said it might not be called the Within, instead it could be the "Epic Touch 4G"
