I hate Sprint.
Anyway, I'm about to root my hero and install DamageControl v2.08 - heard this was the most stable, fastest 2.1 out.
Before I do this, I want to make sure of a few things. Is there anything I should be aware of concerning this ROM? Will everything be working as far as camera, phone, text, keyboard, etc...
I was told it is way better than 1.5 in every aspect but am I going to be sacrificing anything (basic at least) besides the warranty and risk of bricking?
What should I expect coming from 1.5?
Sorry for being late on this...but I'm sure one of you guys will take the time out to explain this to me.
You can find most of the answers to your questions in the DamageControl dev thread.
As far as speed, I can't guarantee it is the fastest. It looks like it still has sense, and sense is a jerk as far as speed goes. I haven't ever tried DamageControl, but you'd be better off looking for something that has Sense stripped from it if you're concerned about speed.
FreshToast is really fast, but it isn't based off of the the leak, so you lose camera. It's overclocked and fast as hell, though.
there are a few cool features coming from 1.5 to 2.1, market looks different, you have pinch zoom on the dashboard, my 1.5 had rosie (the rounded menu bar at the bottom) so that wasnt new, sense is pretty and shiny and is nice to look at.
i did find it a bit faster, but i still had a bunch of sprint bloateware installed.
personally i use sushi rom based off fresh 2.0d, which is fast as heck, but is lacking a few features id like, which ill get to installing when i have the time.
good luck!
ps. totally keep a few rom zips on your SD card if you can spare the few hundred mb of space, so you can play with a few roms without needing your computer.

Fresh toast is actually based off of 2.0d which is like DamageControl, they have all sprint stuff, sense ui, and everythings included. But fresh toast has a different kernel which as of right now the camera doesnt work. And fresh toast i dont think comes with sprint stuff. I was just clearing that up
But with almost every 2.1 rom other then the overclocked ones. Everything pretty much works and you wont lose anything.
The best advice for you is... read the post of each rom and look at What doesnt work or what does work, or read the Change logs they will tell you what is new to the rom as the dev added them.
You cant go wrong with Fresh 2.0d or damagecontrol.. DC rom is basic, but comes with an App that will let you do more advanced things by the push of a button. I recommend you stick with that choice.
ok i just rooted it...
how do I install DC v2.08? I already downloaded it. Now what?? lol
nevermind got it !
with EC 2.08 you do not loose anything!!!
just get a lot of new and better things.
i think it is faster than 1.5 and more stable.
after you have DC Rom installed.
Nandroid again!!
then look at installing a2sd
If sprint doesn't release 2.1 soon, then yes I'm right there with you and I WILL ROOT my phone and follow all those on XDA. I should have already technically.
I want sense tho...so it sounds like damage control is the best eh?

i love sense ... DC roms have it.
there are other ROMs based on DC, and will have sense too.
I run sense with live wallpapers on DC, with a lot of widgets.
No problem with performance!!!!!
go ahead jump in!! you will be happier and forget about the Sprint UPdate!!!
Thanks Dan sent you a PM.
What about the samsung moment? For my wife. Any tips on a ROM that would work for the moment? Sorry, probably shouldn't be hijacking this thread.
I love my Sprint service. I hate their update schedule. I also dislike a few of their policies. Overall, though, they are the best wireless service I've ever had.
That being said, I LOVE DamageControl 2.08 on my rooted HTC Hero (Sprint/CDMA). I wiped, rooted, ROM'd, removed all the Sprint crap and other apps I didn't want, then put on all the apps I wanted. My phone rocks now.
I'd recommend it!

This question has been in my mind for a while. Is it worth it to flash a Hero rom ? I am currently running cyanogen 4.0.1, wireless tethering is working, Overclock is working as well as Term. It is also wicked fast.
My SPL is .00006 so from my understanding a "Perfect" SPL, although I have root. Maybe am reading the post dates wrong but I thought this would not work. The method I used was 1 click root.
I understand there are some issues with Hero on a MT3G but if i have root and a partitioned (FAT32/EXT3/SWAP) Class 6 SD, would you use a Hero? My personal feeling is wait tell the Official release comes out for the 32A so there maybe a bit more to work with.
I would appreciate any insight to this. Thank you for all your hard work this community is awesome.
My opinion is Hero roms are still too slow for the MyTouch. I have one of Cyanogen's roms and love it. Many thanks to Cyanogen and those that assisted. I have flashed about four or five Hero roms and they are realy nice to look at, and I can apreciate all the work it took for someone to get them to even run on the device, but still too slow for me. Just my two cents.
My thoughts
Ya that was my gut feeling, I am going to stick with this as "if ain't broke don't fix it" I may however flash my G1, just to see how it looks
I agree with donepate, most hero roms are pretty sluggish and a lot of roms have trouble with the MT3G. Upon wake up the graphics turn to poo and get pixelated and blurry. But this is only on some MT3g's, and on most roms. The only hero rom that has worked for me is Fatal1ty's hero rom, but It was too slow for me, I was spoiled by Cyanogen's roms speed. If I were you, I would stick with CyanogenMod 4.0.1 and just download a Hero theme. I highly recommend Ted's hero theme. Looks just like the Hero but without its functionality and there's no Sense UI.
Try one
I would suggest trying it and deciding for yourself.
Some people have the absolute opposite experience then what is being mentioned in this thread.
I for instance, am running the TF3D V3 ROM by Drizzy (Not even the newest ROM out there by any means) with a 32MB Swap (as auto partitioned with the RAv1.2.1 Recovery) all on a Class 4 SD. And find the speed no slower by any means.
The only change I have made is to reverse Apps2SD (IMO Apps2SD is not necessary on MT3G)
I am completely satisfied, have no graphical glitches, I do get the TouchUI Loading once when I boot, and maybe once every 2 days if I don't reboot.
The improvements that the Hero ROMS bring to the user experience of the device out ways the quite small
So I say, make a nandroid backup and "Try it out" it just might be "worth it"
I just installed Hero
I used Qteknology HTC HERO PORT from [1.79.482.3] 32b and you are right, the usability is worth the sometimes lag. I have used the overclock app and disabled the old school clock widget and performance is decent. I may try some others but so far so good
Edit: Why this is not released on T-Mobile is beyond me, if they want a truly customizable UI, Hero is that. I upgraded from my G1 which is still working great to a MT3G and to be honest it felt like a windows service pack. I had to bite my pride and tell my wife I love so she could have my G1 and I could not get shot.
My other feeling is that when Hero is released for the non-Google branded phones, these awesome dev's will have much more to work with and speed just may increase. I do not know as all i can dev is a few nasty ass skins
Beautiful!
I just loaded the ROM you suggested and it is night and day. Everting works and more importantly, its fast Thank you for the heads up. I think we have a keeper.
I'm running Hero on my G1 and I love it but I'm waiting till Oct when HTC releases some legit new hero for Magics before I toss it on my MyTouch.
Yeah I tried Haykuro/Dizzy Hero and it gave me BSOD (Blur Screen of Death) but evil hero 1.9 has been running smooth for me with 96mb swap.
I used to hate putting hero roms in my G1 cause of the lag but since then there has been a mass improvement in speed... granted its no Cyanogen but definitely worth taking a look at as it can be used in a daily basis now

No and yes , I am disappointed with the Hero Roms, but impressed with the developement of them. They are not up to par yet, but soon. The one touch root is very impressive, no more of the old skool style.
I am looking for the orginal mytouch ROM and SPL to put back on, can anyone direct where i can find them?

Noob here, and I apologize for that... LOL
I'm new to the Android world. Have my CDMA Hero rooted running stock 1.5. Looking at the Wiki for the Hero ROM, there are currently 13 of them to choose from.
I searched for comments, comparisons and such, and there really isnt much here, or I wasn't searching right.
Anyway, can anyone tell me why they like the ROM that they are running so well? So maybe I can decide which I might like to try out?
Thanks guys, Noob or not, these forums have been soooo helpful! Keep up the great work.
Fresh 2.0d plus the vanilla lockscreen (minus menu). Thank me later.
BTW, I have tried nearly every ROM here... I would suggest you do the same since different people like different stuff. Vanilla Darch comes in second for me and I prefer the Helix launcher over any other.

It's just like a buffet, the first time you go there you try everything to find out what you like! The next time you go back you only try what you like!
They are all about the same speedwise, it's all about trying them to find the one that suits you and has stuff that you want in a ROM, most of them have screenshot to see what they look like, and most of them are near 100%.
Roman
Heres what I do. Nandriod, test, restore if I don't like it.

I gotta say, Fresh 2.0d is awesome. Just make sure you also install the vanilla lockscreen.
RegawMOD v2.0.2p here but it's also in how you can put bits and pieces together that makes it quick and smooth for you in all reality.
I run Damagecontrol 2.05 as my daily with vanilla lockscreen, black/blue dialer/black droid launcher/black keyboard, etc, etc....
I'm running DamageControl2.05, slimmed down and modded. Still trimming fat, but my last update.zip was only like 90Mb. Seriously, just give them a try. It's not like buying a car, there is no buyers remorse. If you try one and don't like it, you just move on to the next one. Be warned, once you start modding them yourself, it becomes addictive. Next thing you know, you'll find yourself missing sleep cause you're pouring over apk's and png's getting everything just how you want it... not speaking from experience or anything, lol

Hi, I'll soon be receiving my new G1, cant wait, but wondering what the best way to get Hero on it is. By that I mean, and from a purely objective point of view, which is one of the fastest/stable and fully operational Hero ports available? Alternatively, would it be better to get an older version of Android and theme it like Hero (the launcher). That way in theory it would be a fast stable system that looks like hero. What differences would there be if that was the case (in terms of functionality/features of the operating system etc) between these options?
Many thanks!
Well, I'm assuming you just want Sense as that's what Hero basically is. There are many Sense ROMs for the G1. You'll have to pick which one you like the best. All the reviews in the world can't account for your personal opinion. However, be aware that none have working bluetooth.

If I was you, which I was at one point, I would forget the sense roms since they are nice at first but eventually get really slow. Instead go with an eclair rom such as CaNNoN202 Complete Eclair this is what I have been using for the last month and it is still very snappy too date.

thank you! What are the main differences between 1.5 and 2.1 roms?
1.5 was the second version of Android called Cupcake then came Donut 1.6 which is the current version. 2.1 is somewhat new but 2.2 is the most current only available on certain phones such as the Nexus One. 2.1 has certain features not available on 1.6. If you are new to this you should read as much as you can because you can really damage your phone if you take a wrong step.
Once you get rooted next would be to install a custom rom. Donut roms are the most stable but some of these Eclair roms are very close. Check out theunlockr.com for a video tutorial on how to root and install a rom.

Bada's pointing you in a good direction. Just wanted to point out that any "hero theme" you get won't have all the Sense things that most Hero people like. Also, the launcher will just look Hero-ish. It won't have its functionality.

Thats great thanks for your help! I first purchased a G1 which was stuck on the G1 boot screen which i believed I could fix. Id never owned this phone before and so did alot of reading up while waiting for it to arrive to determine the reason it was bricked and a possible solution. As it happens it was a true brick, no access to bootloader, safe mode, recovery or fastboot. I thought i I could force commands to be sent using SDK via Windows but it would never be detected. The one good thing that came out of it, is I have a good knowledge of what to do and what not to do when rooting and upgrading so when my fully functioning one comes I will take all steps to avoid the same fate as the owner of the bricked phone!

Again, thanks for your input! I think my options so far would be to try out a few sense roms, some claim to be quite fast and a few reviews on youtube look promising. Really like the look of it, will have to give them a go to see if i like the feel of them!
Avoid DangerSPL. lbcoder, with the help from a few others I believe, have found way to 100% guarantee you DON'T brick, but you have to follow the instructions. I'm sure no other phone needs this, so I'm just -assuming- you're not fully read up on it. Please, this is the NUMBER ONE way bricks occur and is completely avoidable. You CAN recover a bricked phone through JTAG but it is difficult and offers new ways of completely destroying the phone from ANY future use.
Is there just a bug-free non cyanogen ASOP rom out right now, i am not feeling adventurous.
what im thinking is like a vanilla Ivans. I'm guessing there isn't one?

It buggy and I think there were things that dont work. Framework has never updated it, so I wouldn't expect any updates to what doesn't work.
I suggest giving cyanogen elb a try, it is the most complete aosp rom we have right now.
Kaosfroyo would be a good choice in the near future for you. In the next rev of kaosfroyo, he will prolly have more of the devices working. Right now all the things like wifi, bluetooth, camera and such arnt working yet.

Yeah, I have tried ELB, I like it, but it is still choppy and not smooth as i would like. yeah, I am waiting for the next rev of kaosfroyo, but i need something to hold me over, i guess i will stay with senseable.
Fresh (should be out very soon) supposedly has an aosp version.
I think the choppiness you describe is inherent with ADWLauncher that is included with CELB. I removed it and went to Launcher Pro. It can be choppy, but the latest update includes memory management that allows you to allocate how much memory the launcher uses. I also disable "wallpaper scroll" and it really brings it a lot closer to a Sense like experience. You could also add the original Android launcher or Launcher2.
Just some thoughts. It is the closest you are going to get to AOSP right now. I'm also waiting for KaosFroyo to get more stable.

I can vouch for this too, ADW on CELB was choppy for me as well. Simply installing LauncherPro fixed that. Other than that CELB has been pretty damn good to me as far as stability goes.
Senseless is good, as far as pure vanilla non Cyanogen roms go, it just hasn't been update in a while. That isn't a bad thing, there really isn't anything that it needs changed.

the devs won't be releasing it here on xda. All the whiny *****y people in their thread pissed them off. They were *****ing bc the dev delayed the promised update bc his truck broke down. Its just a phone. People really need to calm down around here. Eh back on topic, if you want the rom when available, see their blog. Sure their thread will give directions in the op on where to find it, unless they change their minds.
I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?

Don't have any lag issues with CM6. Been running for 3 weeks no lag. ???
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

How do you get the market to automatically download your apps? Is it another app or backup? It won't even save all of the apps I had downloaded last time. It only seems to save around 8.
