Hi. I used to use this app to kill active but unused data connections on winmo. Also it used to just switch to 3g for certain apps and for the rest of the time just stay on gprs, say if you were just connected to push mail all day. would be great if there was something like this for android. is there? or something similar?
juicedefender on the mkt
sorry double post.
Well that pretty much raped my phone ha ha. any other suggestions?

Hey, I know this is an old question, but incase anyone stumbles upon it and wants an answer, I found droidwall to be useful. Just tell it the few apps you want to be able to access the net. I also use juice defender on the lowest or middle setting. My phone has stopped using unwanted data, and disconnects when idle to save battery.

Hi.
I have a problem with my X10. I don't know if is android related or only applies to X10.
I posted in another section but i didn't get any answers so, it might be only X10.
Here it is.
A few days ago i installed a network monitor from market and reset the counters to 0 at midnight.
In the morning i had 12Mb traffic.
After, i disabled google sync, facebook and twitter updates, removed the weather widget from screen and i still had constant traffic.
2h ago i did a factory defaults and i only installed NetSentry and a task killer.
I don't have sync configured, no weather, no twitter, etc.
I killed all the apps excepting net sentry (including the task killer), set the counters to 0 and in 15min i have 130k traffic.
I don't have a data plan so, i'm only using wifi.
Can somebody with an X10 to monitor their traffic with net sentry (or other net monitor app)?
But, somebody with 3G or WIFI active all the time (WIFI sleep policy set to Never).
I'm curious if is something with my phone or ...
hey dude, i have the same thing happening here. i think its andriod not the phone. but i do agree with with you, some kind of time-out for the phone to disconnect if its sleeping is necessary not only to conserve battery but for those with limited data plan.

Well, if you are in WIFI area 22h/day you don't need a data plan but you need data active to receive mails, updates, etc so, my WIFI is always active.
I know is not the phone... what i want to figure out if is the Rogers branded firmware which has a problem or is something general and all X10 (or even all androids) are doing the same traffic.
Here in Canada, Rogers has stupid data plans.
25$ for 500Mb, 30$ for 1Gb, 60$ for 3Gb and 80$ for 5Gb.
If my phone is doing 0.5Mb in 1h without any apps running, those plans are a rip off
This means ~350Mb per month without any emails, browsing, etc gone on absolutely nothing.

Cool... I've a 3G data plan so I don't really care for data traffic (I will however do the test and share results), but having 3G attached consumes very quickly the battery (100% at 8:00 AM, 20% at 8:00 PM, with push e-mail on both Moxier and GMail). How long lasts the battery with WiFi always connected?

wow i must say your battery is amazing. what Firmware are you running? my battery consumption is about 50% for only 5hours.
am on unlimited Data and 3G always connected. its driving me crazy.

I'm running the stock firmware and actually I don't find the battery so amazing: consuming 80% of charge in half a day is very bad. And this is achieved by disabling Bluetooth (with my previous Xperia X1 I was used to let BT always turned on) and minimal usage. If I surf a bit, or talk few minutes, I will run out of battery, and this is not acceptable...
Please, this is not about battery or power management, we have another thread for that.
So, nobody wants to do the test for 30min to see if they have traffic when background sync is disabled and all the other apps killed?

It wasn't my intention to go off topic, I just asked you how long lasts your battery with WiFi always connected.
I plan to do the 30 minute test this week end. Which application are you using to count the transferred data?

Well, never more than 12h but i listen music via Bluetooth a few hours and i play a lot with the phone (heh, new toy)
I bought UltimateJuice ... i hope i'll see an improvement.
Nobody else has problems with data?
Or, everyone has unlimited data plans?
the constant data access appears to be a function of Android. i immediately noticed that when i entered my network settings.
the perfect solution i found was to install an app called APNdroid, which you can get for free at the Android market. this allows you to toggle your network data connection on and off and gives you total control over your data consumption.
Well, the idea is: i need my data on most of the time.
But, i don't want unwanted data
And it seems nobody knows which app or service is doing this traffic.
And more than that, it seems that nobody cares
Try to use 3d watchdog to monitor traffic. Best straightforward application
Link
And Install APN Droid and switch on/off 3G when ever you want.
Link
even further you can install profile package to automatically activate wifi or 3g on certain time or location.
@Shiwanta, thank's for the tip of 3G Watchdog ! Will try it soon.

Hi there,
I'm having issues w/ juice defender. It installs fine, and runs ok, but it doesn't seem to do anything. It says the apn was switched on in the log, but I never get mail updates or anything..
Also I thought it was supposed to the activate the apn when I unlock the phone, this isn't happening.
Do I need to set anything on the phone wifi/3g settings?
Would love it to sort out mail syncing like it says it will..
any ideas?
Thanks,
niklz
have figured this out, thought it would turn on mobile networks, but you need to leave it on, awesome app!

all a learning experience
Out of curiosity,
With the way JuiceDefender works, what's the optimum setting for updates and sync e.t.c.?
Is the app smart enough to invoke its own sync, or do the timings on the phone and the app have to coincide?
cheers,
niklz
Do you guys leave this on or off? I left it on always on my HTC hero but it did drain the battery faster... its found in the wireless networks / mobile networks setting...

Yeah i'm a little confused too. Does this have to be checked to get the gmail pushed?
Yeah, I leave mine on unless I'm using wifi calling, in which case I can use wifi for data. You can turn it off if you wanna save battery life tho. It obviously means you can't use anything that uses data, like texts, emails, internet, maybe calls even.

why would this affect txts and calls? it isn't airplane mode...
If you uncheck mobile networks, then its pretty much airplane mode. If you'd like to save battery, then you can set the Network Mode to GSM only and uncheck the "always on mobile data" Will save quite a bit
-Cheers
EDIT: Apologies. The always on mobile data keeps a pretty constant connection with the network so downloading can happen faster. Since the connection to the network is already on and active, a download can be plopped in quite fast. It is unnecessary for data connections, but is helpful
FYI I just unchecked it and tested my GMAIL and I still get my e-mails pushed. Lets hope I get better battery life.
You will simply see a larger delay when you request the phone to pull data... also push services MAY function and may not...
You may only get gmail when you pick up your phone and use the data some other way... at which point the phone opens up the data connection and any information can flow over data.
I would doubt that the push server will be able to signal the phone to turn on data, so it may check periodically or only catch the push command if you have your data pipe open already (as described above).

Hi everyone, im running typhoon cm7 v3.0.0 and i was wonderin if there is a hack to make tmobile believe we are using less data than we really are? I hate it once i hit 5gb downloaded data my data connectuion speed slows down drastically and i hate it!!! So if anyone knows a solution plz help.....

No, you cant do that

i disagree
there are some really effective tricks that can be used to Significantly reduce your data usage on android. i use data a lot on my phone and i never hit 100MB data usage. how in the hell you are able to hit 5GB? anyway try the following tricks:
1. use "Droidwall"to only allow certain importantapps to access the the 3G connection. the less important apps can run or update just fine from WIFI
2. use "adblock" this will block connection to all ad servers
3. only allow opera mini and Operamobile w/Turbo enabled from droidwall to save data. if you want to use another browser (cant really see why) use them when you are on WIFI.
4. avoid push mail if you can. it will kill your battery and may end up eating your data plan to some extent.
5. use "3G watchdog" or something similar and place a widget in the homescreen to constantly remind you of the current data usage.
Well I have not really done any looking for it, but there was suppose to have been a work around of some kind to still be able to get 3G and 4G speeds after you were throttled. But I also heard T-Mobile has already found out about it and fixed whatever glitch was in the system. You can do some digging if you want, bit it might be in vain when or if you find it.
Now don't get me wrong I think if they say unlimited it should mean unlimited, but I am not going to get into all of that as it as been beatin to death. But if you are going over 5Gig every month I want to know what the heck you are doing too cause until almost two weeks ago when I accidently busted my laptop screen. I tethered my HD2 via WiFi like for like 14 to 16 hours a day and only got up to 3.5 gig once. You might seriously want to think about a home internet set up or start using some local WiFi hotspots more. Heck I know a guy that goes to the local Hardee's and sets for 6 to 8 hours a day just to use their WiFi for free. I have set there for 4 hours befor. r,
Thanks for all ur replys........me personally am a huge fan of call of.duty...and i play online most of the time....tethering my phone is excellent thats why i use it......i heard a hack about one of the droid phones on verizon that did this sort of thing so i thought it wud be possible on my hd2.......

5gb on a mobile connection? what the hell are you doing to use that much data?
Got my atrix yesterday. LOVE IT! Here seems the problem. As Im not into paying more for 2gb of data, Im only on the 200 mb plan especially since I mainly only use data over wifi. Since getting yesterday, Ive used 3% of my 200mb. In initially turning phone on, I immediately connected to wifi before signing into motoblur and anything else. I have Droidwall installed and only allow most things to connect via wifi. I also have android booster which used to turn off my GPRS on my previous phone with the widget. However on the atrix it does not. I know how to turn it off via settings, but just looking for maybe a widget that does it for me. Any ideas? Sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, but I searched and it came up with solutions for other phones, not the atrix. Thanks for any help.
