Hey guys. I'm an Incredible user, but my girlfriend has an Eris. I'm tired of hearing her ***** about the speed of the phone, and how it occasionally locks up on her, so (now that the easy root method for leakers is out) I'm about to root her phone and install a custom ROM (hopefully).
Now, I have a few questions for you folks since I'm not familiar with the Eris community at all (and I have some time constraints since she needs her phone back).
1. I'm looking for a ROM recommendation. What I'm looking for is something extremely stable and fast. I don't need any bells/whistles. She doesn't use tethering, at all but it must have GPS/Camera/Bluetooth/MMS working. Don't really care if it has Sense, but if there is something fast/stable WITH sense, that would not be a bad thing. Most important things are speed and bug-free (or damn close). Froyo would be nice (obviously).
2. I am unfamilar with overclocking. I come from a phone where you overclock by installing a hydra kernel, so I don't know how this works on the Eris. It sounds like I will have to manually set up overclocking in SetCPU, and I'm not familiar with the application. If anyone can give me some tips on how to do this, or recommended settings that would be AWESOME. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not my phone, so I won't have time to tinker with trial and error (in other words I won't be able to start testing at 850mhz and work my way down until it's stable).
I know this is a lot to ask, but I'm hoping some of you guys will be able to help me out given the circumstances. Thanks in advance.

evil eris is fast stable and sense built. has some bells and whistles but smooth. and there are other very stable fast sense roms , i just prefer an AOSP vanilla rom instead.
setCPU is just a set of slide bars for the most part that control highest and lowest settings in mhz, 768 being highest stable average setting, 806 being highest reported (very few)
Thanks for the info. do I need to install a custom kernel to go along with evileris or is that all I need to flash?
I wouldn't suggest Evil Eris since 4.0 is coming out but if you can wait until then you can try to. I might suggest XTRom, it seems to be stable without any features missing.
Actually some phones can get to 825mhz but that's very rare I've only seen that in two cases, I suggest trying 768, it's the most stable speed for the general eris user (some unlucky folks can't get passed 710mhz.)
Basically download setcpu, put it on the phone, click "autodetect" and you've got your speeds. I suggest setting a heat profile to around 42 degrees at your highest priority.
I also suggest not going under 160mhz, the phone freezes up at 19mhz.
For screen off/ standby you can do 160-480mhz
For regular under 100% battery I suggest 748mhz max and 245mhz min.
No kernels necessary, just use "autodetect"
Ok. One more question. I've got the android SDK installed from when I rooted my incredible. Can you point me toward a guide that will explain how to get ADB access on the Eris?
Edit: One thing I forgot to mention. This IS a phone with a leaked 2.1 OTA installed.
Nevermind. Got it
K, if you've got any other questions I'd be happy to answer.
I have done the exact same thing you are doing, and EE was where I wound up too. Here are my thoughts however.
EE does FC a bit more than stock, its fast though. If you need to do it now,I would consider the Xtr Sense rom as a start, then hell, let me know if its worth switching to.
If you have a little time to wait, I would do EE4. The negative aspect of doing this for a girlfriend, or wife, is they don't tend to have the patience we have with bugs. To them it is not some dev busting his ass to help make their phone better... its "oh crap he is going to 'fix it' again". And sadly no matter how good you are at fixing things, that one mistake you made back in 1997 will haunt you for life!

Exactly why I needed something super stable. Hopefully EE does the trick because I'm done flashing it
I'm setting up OC right now. Hopefully this will be nice and stable.
I've only got a half hour to finish lol.
She's pretty good about me hacking her phone, though, so I'm sure flashing EE4 won't be a problem. I just want to wait until it's got all the kinks worked out.

Just a suggestion for your SetCPU settings. You shouldnt have such a big jump i.e. 245-748 because it causes lag alot of times from the major change in cpu jumping. Try 768 - 528 then screen off 378-248. Since changing mine to something similiar to his it runs smoother coming out of sleep. Stock when I got a text message it would vibrate then three seconds later make the notifcation sound. Now since changing setCPU like this it does them the same time. Just a suggestion.....Good Luck Bro....By the way eris lighting bolt it damm good and so is white widow even though some peole dont like the cook of the latter for some reason
Thanks for all the help guys. She's soooo much happier with her phone now. The difference in response time is huge.
Now, I do have one last question/request. Can you guys recommend some themes that work with EvilEris 3.0?
I'd prefer ones that can be pushed through recovery rather than have to use Metamorph, if possible.
Edit: Sorry. One more. A keyboard with a voice to text button while in both landscape and portrait.
yeah white widow definitely probably one of the more impressive roms for speed ,stability and battery life. .

if you use a cynagon mod rom then I have found a theme called enoch that I love and its flashable. It is a black theme but looks really good.
As for the keyboard there is an XDA HTC IME keyboard with voice to text on here somewhere just search........
Congrats on getting everything running.
can someone please tell whats causing those glitches on my nexus 4, it happens quite some time and im beginning to worry about it.
is it just a software issue? hope its not a hardware issue
i dont own the attached file, but it is exactly the same problem i am having.
i found the attached file on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2056660
sorry if im violating any rules here.

no, i am only using franco kernel. it also happens on stock kernel
Well franco kernel does, afaik, oc the gpu, but if it happens on stock too it's probably not that.
This is probably something you have already thought of, but maybe try reflashing a completly stock rom with no extra apps installed and see if the problem still persists. Best of luck.

one question though, what do you mean on "this is probably something you have tought of?" sorry for the dumb question
I just meant you might of already tried it.
btw, just checked and franco's kernel indeed doesn't oc the gpu.. good on franco.

i tried just that and after opening certain apps there it goes again
still hoping that its not a hardware problem
I am having this exact issue, and I haven't rooted or OC'd my phone at all yet, so it's not that. It's either a hardware defect or a graphics driver bug.
I also have an Iconia A500 tablet, and ever since updating it to ICS, it has had similar graphical corruption issues, which leads me to believe this is a problem with the way the graphics are being implemented in Android. Why it only seems to affect some users is a mystery though...
It seems to capable of occurring in any 2D app (including system menus), but I have yet to see it in a video or a game. Pulse (the newsreader) seems to be particularly susceptible.
I noticed this glitch too. I saw it in different apps, but I think, it only occurs when the keyboard is shown.
I have seen the same issue on my phone but a lot worse, the whole screen is scrambled. I've seen it happen while using the browser and also while using the camera.
I'm completely stock, never rooted. I've only had the phone for a week.
I get the same exact problem.. Even fully stocked
Software issue

Hi, MxZeal...
Well, you've sort of answered your own question really... you've eliminated everything except franco. So it probably is franco. Whilst it is undeniably good for battery life, it also has problems (in my experience)... and is notorious for causing problems with things like YouTube. When it works, it's brilliant... but when it doesn't, it's a damn nuisance!.
Custom ROMs and Kernels are always going to be a bit flaky because the devs. behind them don't have the resources to fully test them in the same way that Google have. And even they screw up from time to time - and they have millions of dollars and a whole army of testers at their disposal !!
The current version of franco is r75, and it hasn't been updated since August, however this post suggests an update might be due sometime soon... but you know what unfounded rumours are like... take 'em with a pinch of salt, until they happen. (I'm still waiting for Key Lime Pie!).
It's also worth bearing in mind that the first gen. Nexus 7 is now nearly 18 months old, which makes it a bit of an antique... and developers like franco are going to be naturally moving their developer skills onto newer and shinier devices.
In the meantime, if you want stability on your Nexus 7, revert back to stock kernel... if only as a matter of elimination. If your problems persist after doing so, then it's clearly something else.
Rgrds,
Ged.

I was intrigued as well. There are rules pertaining to kernels here in xda. If a dev won't comply, the thread gets to be closed down.

Yes I know the rules, but I figured someone would've started a discussion in the general area. Oh well, guess I just did.
I don't know what I expected actually, my experience on any forum is that most people don't research on their own, they come to forums and if the answer isn't there, they give up. I love googling for new undiscovered gems.
Hi!
First of all, I would like to thank you wholeheartedly for the interest in ShinTo Kernel and your time in testing it.
I am sincerely blown away by the spike in interest... Just wow!
In the space of two months I have moved twice across Europe and am currently getting settled in my new home (and waiting for the darn broadband).
I can assure you two things; ShinTo Kernel & PreCog.me are not a hobby.
They are my daily work focus (as in my daily job).
I could extend myself talking about the great projects I have but I am the kind of person that prefers to prove with facts so... Keep an eye on PreCog.me
Ps: i don't want to monopolize the thread so... If you have any specific questions or I can help out in any way, then please do ask
Ps2: I am eternally grateful to xda, civato and all the great ppl here...
Note3 N9005 running the insanely brutal [ShinTo Kernel] v028a005 yeaaaah!
For some interesting stuff why not head to PreCog.me

ShinTo Kernel v028a005 has over 50 updates/enhancements/fixes and it is compiled with the latest bleeding edge Linaro Toolchain GCC 4.9.2
I also fixed the cosmetic issue of not displaying the kernel name correctly in the TW settings app.
If there are no unforeseeable issues, it should be released around the middle of the week

Your setup and phone use is completely unique. Anyone else's battery life will not give you the slightest clue as to what yours might be.
Flash it and see for yourself.

Benchmarks are different from device to device. They're not a true statement about a kernels performance. I get insane battery, I get lightning fast speeds and I love using the kernel. This is a discussion of the kernel in this thread, that's why I started it. This is not an official Dev thread, that will come later from the Dev. Of you're interested in it, head over to precog.me and read the official kernel page.

Actually it can serve as basis. For example if that user is able to achieve 10hrs SOT, then at least I know that the kernel is capable of going that far. No matter how you force a kernel, if it has bad battery life then it can never achieve high SOTs. It actually us very helpful for one to post battery stats because I can then adjust and try to get close or even surpass the user's settings.
With all due respect, I think you are wrong in saying it won't give me the slightest clue of what the battery life of mine will be. It actually can tell a lot(if I'm doing things wrong or right). That's how users learn how to improve their devices by getting tips from others. And for that reason I'm refraining from flashing it because I have a very good set-up. I know I can go back just with flashing the stock kernel, but we all know that sometimes it doesn't really work 100%. "Something" gets broken somehow at a random chance.

Fair enough, but I still disagree.
For example - on my last cycle I got nearly 8 hours SOT and about 1 day 13 hours on one charge. What can one infer from that? I say another user can infer very little, there are way too many variables.
I use Alliance ROM. This was my first cycle with this kernel. I use only 100% black wallpapers, system, desktop, and lockscreen are all black. One homescreen. Brightness about 40% except for videos. Tasker is set so that screen off=WiFi and data off, and I use a flip cover. I've deleted over 100 apps. I've removed about 25 autostarts with SD Maid, usually only use about 750 mb at startup. I never sync anything whatsoever. Two widgets, clock/weather and music. Location is always off unless I'm navigating.
I could go on, there's more, but I hope you see my point. And that's before the vast amount of kernel tweaks I've set up with Faux Clock, which I'll probably tweak further. And I haven't even mentioned my usage....
With further cycles I'll probably squeeze more juice out of it, who knows?
If you think this will give you any idea about your battery life, fine. But I can't see how it can.
As for benchmarks - a waste of time if you're comparing with another device, only remotely useful if you're comparing performance with different setups on the same phone, IMHO.
I absolutely love this rom, and using it feels great with almost no issues... but whenever I turn off the screen (lock my phone) it reboots immediately. Any ideas what could cause/fix this issue?? If you need more information I will be giving you more this evening when I get home from work.... Gotta turn my phone off for now to prevent reboots
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Will be fixed in the next release. We are waiting to get everything alright with the B25 update. For now you could switch back to another rom to avoid this bug.

No I didn't try it yet. Mostly because I don't feel comfortable to flash something I've no idea of what it exactly is....
Do you mind giving me a newbie explanation of what a kernel is and does, how I can go back to the default kernel and why it might be a good idea to try another one (especially Llama sweet in this case).
Sorry, I know I'm asking a lot, but I'm not in a hurry and would love to get a bit smarter
But really thank you for the continuous help and advice though!

Think of a kernel as a brain that is connect to all your nerves and etc in your body. The kernel is responsible for handing input and output information(or data)throughout the Android system. Flashing a new kernel will give you the ability to mess with the CPU and GPU frequency of your Snapdragon 820. You can add thermal restrictions and core control to make sure your device doesn't overheat, or when it does, it'll lower the frequency so it can cool off faster. You can make RAM management more aggressive, edited the I/O Scheduler l, etc. Flashing a new kernel can be beneficial and vice versa depending on the user. If you want to ever go back to your default kernel, you can back up your entire ROM, or boot.img

Something that you should be messing with? The kernel is like a part of the system, not like the bootloader. If you somehow mess up and, say, flash an incompatible kernel (which mostly won't happen because the worst that can happen is that, say, your camera doesn't work) the phone won't go past the BL unlocked message screen, but you can simply get to TWRP and dirty flash the ROM you were using (not even wipe) and it will get fixed. You won't lose any data but you'll need to flash everything you flashed before except for GApps(magisk for example)
In short, you unlocked the phone, you messed with the recovery, you messed with the system. This is the least harmful thing really. Just make a backup of system and boot before (not image, just system)

You can install any kernel manager from the Play store. I recommend Kernel auditor since you can add scripts and etc with a nice interface. If you don't feel comfortable messing with it, then leave it be.
just to clarify a little:
Even if you have a stock kernel installed (say, you are on stock and just rooted), you still can change a lot of things for example turn cores off and on manually, lower the max freq and crank the min freq up, change the governor values, RAM management... The thing is that custom kernels are made with specific things in mind and they usually come with cool stuff like KCAL (change contrast, value, saturation, even hue on the screen). They also have different community-made governors optimized for phones which can have much more responsiveness or faster ramp down speed, so you get more battery. And there's this EAS thing going around, which manages the CPU to supposedly give you a crapton of battery. Llama Sweet has it.
NucleaROM comes with a kernel made for it by the same guy OrdenKrieger, Radioactive Kernel. It has many values too. But if your problem is in the kernel you can try and change it.
Thirst of all thank you guys for helping me out and informing me of what a kernel is and does! For now I will however stay with what I've got.
However I'm wondering if anyone else running NucleaRom on an Axon 7 is having the same issue I have, since I didn't see any other posts targeting this here on XDA... Which makes me wonder why I am the only one maybe I did something wrong?
