An update on Nexus One partnerships
When we launched Nexus One in January, we announced partnerships with Vodafone in Europe and Verizon Wireless in the US. We have news on both fronts.
Today, Vodafone begins accepting pre-orders for Nexus One from customers in the United Kingdom at www.vodafone.co.uk/nexusone, and on April 30th Vodafone will start selling Nexus One in their UK stores, online, and over the phone. Soon after, they will also begin selling Nexus One in France (SFR), Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Vodafone is our first European partner to distribute the Nexus One.
In the US, if you’ve been waiting for the Nexus One for Verizon Wireless’ network, head over to http://phones.verizonwireless.com/htc/incredible to pre-order the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful new Android phone and a cousin of the Nexus One that is similarly feature-packed. It will be available in stores on April 29th.

My guess? Verizon didn't want the phone due to the 3G issues. Not that it's definitely a hardware issue, but they probably didn't want to take the chance.

Why would the CMDA version have the same 3G issues? It would have used a completely different radio than the current N1. I highly doubt that was the reason. My guess it that they either believe the Incredible would take too many N1 sales to make it profitable, or Verizon wants more control of the device than Google is willing to give them.
Regardless, it's not completely dead yet and there's still a chance Sprint will get it. I still don't know how well an unlocked CDMA phone could work though.
Doubtful that the 3G issues had anything to do with it. They most likely didn't want 2 nearly identical models to deal with. It wouldn't make any sense to carry both the Nexus One and the Incredible. On top of that, the Nexus One wouldn't be filled with the Verizon bloatware that the Incredible most likely will be.
Verizon probably wouldn't budge on their programming prices for the phones is the most likely reason.
I'm sure it had everything to do with the fact that why would you buy a phone for 529 when you can get almost the same phone for 199. N1 would have super failed on Verizon worse than TMO and ATT versions

I believe the issues are with the radio being at the bottom, so the signal dropping by hand covering the bottom would affect it the same way.
I highly doubt that was the reason. My guess it that they either believe the Incredible would take too many N1 sales to make it profitable, or Verizon wants more control of the device than Google is willing to give them.

Well, the Incredible has no bloatware to be found (see the videos on YouTube, particularly the ones by "jon4lakers"). The device is completely untouched, especially in comparison to AT&T's Backflip.
Regardless, it's not completely dead yet and there's still a chance Sprint will get it. I still don't know how well an unlocked CDMA phone could work though.

I think CDMA phones can not be transferred from Sprint to Verizon. Someone correct me if that's wrong, but I've never heard of that happening.
I don't think they had planned to sell the phone standalone. It would have been subsidized like the t-mobile plan.
It's not too complicated...
Neither verizon..nor HTC would like for N1 to directly compete with their new phone. Google also has mentioned many times that N1 is not a competition to other android phones. they don't want to upset their partners.

I disagree. I see 0 downsides from having both the N1 and the Incredible available.
- The phone market in both cases is HTC, so they don't care.
- The carrier will be Verizon in both cases, so they don't care.
The only difference is that someone who has a strong preference for the N1 (standard OS, the looks, or otherwise), can get it.
A Verizon N1 will only bring in MORE customers to Verizon and HTC; there's no way it could affect either of them negatively.

Beyond not trying to screw their partnership with HTC by having both the Incredible and Nexus One on Verizon at the same time this doesn't make much sense. GSM is the way to go for an open platform anyway. It's a lot easier to just switch out the SIM. No need to contact Verizon or Sprint to let them know which phone you're running.
There is overhead such as the per device training on support, stocking, advertising, that come with any handset. On cdma you do not get the advantages of having a sim and on verizon you already have another phone that is very similar but superior in some respects. Most importantly to the average user who does not know about and will never do many of the things that we would call advantages with the nexus one the things like 8 megapixel camera loom larger. It would be my guess that verizon looked at the number of expected sales versus the cost of carrying the handset and decided it didnt pencil out, simple as that. One thing for certain, it always comes down to the money.

Verizon and HTC are both together in incredible. Verizon has invested in that phone. They want it to sell more than Nexus One.
Google makes lot of money from N1... they released the revenue this quarter... and none of that went to T-Mobile.

Can you provide a link for this?
I have never seen Google or T-Mobile say anything official about how the profits from the phone are distributed. (And I doubt they would do something like this, as companies usually do not.)
Actually, the article didn't say the Nexus One for Verizon was dead. It just suggested buying the Incredible, similar to how they pointed people to the Droid previously in the "can't wait" link. The AT&T N1 came from nowhere.
Paul, you may be right, but I'd wait for further clarification on this before I'd pronounce the VZ-N1 dead.

I agree with this. Further, I would think that having a DEV phone on Verizon would be hugely important to Google. Until the Incredible/Desires are rooted, there is no DEV equivalent to the N1.
Like AT&T, Verizon doesn't have to support it to allow it to connect.
If this development is true its things like this make me more and more mad at the so called "premium" companies like Verizon. Always putting restrictions on what their customers can do instead of giving them the options they want.

krabman is right. you have 2 similar products, verizon backs the incredible though. they must have sat down and crunched numbers out and figured making a cdma verizon n1 wont be worth it vs its projected sales.

It has been done before with older phones. However, I'm not to sure about the current smart phones.
Well ****. The Incredible's hardware is impressive, but it is looking to be one closed POS like every other recent HTC phone. It'll also probably have the ridiculous memory protection scheme of HTC that prevents writing to the system partition. Sounds like the deal between Google and Verizon fell through, because there's definitely code in AOSP for the CDMA mahimahi. The problem is that Verizon can decide whatever comes in or out of their network and they are likely none too pleased with Google's new business model.
No fastboot oem unlock = ABSOLUTELY the wrong direction for Android, do not like.

I use one every day...they have two kinds...one is a 4g only hotspot and the other does 3g and 4g. Mine its the 4g only device... Works like a charm... Runs my playstation and laptop with no blips... fits in your pocket

please note that the ispot is intended/designed to only accept mac id signatures in line with apple products (ipad/ipod/iphone/iwhatever) and some "tinkering" will be required to allow non-apple devices to tether.

The iSpot is not a phone. It is a modified version of the Clear Spot 4G+.
It will only connect to Apple Iphones, Ipads and Ipod Touch devices as it comes out of the box.

i dont know... my cousin worked for clearwire for a little while, he quit because all the customers came back and complained and he was forced to lie to people to sell the product. i wouldnt trust anyone from clearwire.

Well thankfully Sprint lets me upgrade every year since I'm a preferred customer... whatever that means. apparently they'd prefer to not have other customers? Either way I'll ditch my phone the second a new HTC model comes out (assuming its better then the EVO). I have no loyalty when it comes to phones & women
You didn't hear it from me but, YES Clear will be offering both the EVO 4G and EPIC 4G re-branded to unknown names. I cannot confirm this, but I have heard unlimited everything will be cheaper than cricket. NO it will not run gingerbread at release, it will run 2.2 and YES I have seen it. It will be available nationwide, as Clear has changed their marketing strategy to prepare for it's release. They now also sell the 4G/3G combo cards nationwide.
What's the point? Sprint already owns a majority of Clear, and Sprint already markets the EVO and EPIC.
And how can one speculate on whether something will be gingerbread. Code hasn't been released yet, and probably won't be for six months at least. We all know how quick HTC has been with Android updates, though I will admit they were fairly quick with Froyo on the EVO.

The more I read (which is entirely too much lately), the more it seems that the SG2 is going to take a long time to have an "official" release in the US. I try to put myself in the position of there possibly being two different consumers (one for the Infuse and one for the SG2). Unfortunately, I don't think there is a "need" for both devices. It really seems counterproductive for AT&T to release the SG2 so soon after the release of the Infuse.
Call me paranoid but, I would REALLY like to have a phone that isn't a gray item (for warranty). I have faith in the hardware but you never know with electronics.
Anyone have an opinion on it? I have an iP4 which is perfectly fine. I just REALLY want to get an Android device and would prefer to stay on AT&T (service locally is good, and I am on an unlimited data plan).

If your iphone is in good shape and unlocked, sell on ebay for loads of cash. Purchase a sgs2 for 700-750. Still will be able to use your unlimited plan.
But I really dont see SGS2 on ATT anytime soon.

You cold buy a SG2 overseas but it won't work on the same 3g band as AT&T. If you are planning to stay on at&t why don't you.buy the Motorola attic. I own one and its incredibly fast.

You'd be wrong, twice. It does indeed work on AT&Ts 3G/"4G" bands [unlocked]. Its also called the Motorola Atrix 4G, not the attic. While quick, MotoBLUR is garbage.

There's an announcement planned, yes. However, it could easily be for the AT&T branded Nexus S or one of the new tablets.
To those of us who care about hardware the phones (Infuse and SG2) are definitely worlds apart. However to Joe Consumer who doesn't know or care about hardware specs, I don't think it will matter.
The wife keeps giving me the evil-eye when I mention ordering one from the UK. I think I'm wearing her down though

I've messed with an Atrix. Seemed OK. Not spectacular though. I have a friend who actually returned his for the HTC Inspire (and loves it). That doesn't speak well to me. Plus EVERYTHING I've seen about the SG2 proves it's definitely the cat's meow (currently).

It's not just about the specs, those specs translate into REAL world performance differences. The SGSII has not even had the slightest hiccup with web browsing... regardless of how many windows are open, how many graphics are in each window, etc. My SGS, while great when it came out, easily got bogged down, and multi-window browsing was never a truly usable feature. Given the Infuse is has almost identical specs to an SGS, I predict it will have similar issues.
People keep thinking these specs being listed off are only for geeks, but once in a while, they do relate to real world usability and performance differences. And when they do, they are QUITE significant.
The title of your thread almost gave me a heart attack thinking there was some type of major technical issue uncovered. My SGS2 arrives tomorrow. More appropriate title would be "AT&T-branded phone not looking good in the U.S."
I guarantee you several hundred thousand of the 3MM presales are destined for AT&T. If you poke around the technical sites, the general consensus is a 4G version for VZW followed by AT&T this year. Nobody's even mentioning Sprint or T-Mobile. Depending on the timing, the SGS2 could be AT&T's first LTE phone. I haven't seen any updates on their LTE status but I'm guessing they're pushing to get something up quickly to show the world they'll be as good as VZW in the long run.

Sorry about the startle. I changed the title of the thread.
I am just frustrated (as are many I'm sure). I'd like to offload my iP4 before the value drops too much (iP5 release). Unfortunately, I'm unable to go without a phone and I am really nervous about a gray market item. Hell even an unbranded Samsung direct phone would work for me. I'm going to have to pay full price anyhow.

Use the fuzzy math I used to convince myself the phone was only $475. $800 - $325 (sold G2) = $475 Can you really put a price on whipping your phone out and gathering a crowd around to see it for a couple of months? My take on buying an import is you spin the wheel and take your chances. If you buy it in the UK, Samsung U.S. will service it. If you buy from Expansys they'll ship it back to the UK for you for service. How long you're without a phone is probably the biggest concern. If you use a credit card with buyers and/or warranty protection you'd have a back-up that will at least get you your money back. Go ahead, you know you want to do it

I bet the event is for sgs2 variants. Nexus s doesn't warrant a bug event just like here in Canada it came quietly on all carriers. No big announcements. Many peope don't even know it lol.
The phone is been out a month and is at&t compatible. The event is def. about something more exciting

However after my experience with the Captivate, and the shoddy quality control of its hardware, and the still-present GPS woes and color-banding issues on the SGS II, it seems Samsung rushed yet another product to market and perhaps these extra couple months we'll have to wait will be well worth it in the end.

I was wondering what could be that of the SGS II that recently went through the FCC with AT&T only bands?
I hoping the announcement on the 25th will be that Samsung will sell the GS II unlocked in the states and working on AT&T's network just like Google does sell their Nexus phones.

Go to "USA May 24th announcement" thread to discuss this, I think I mentioned pricing there, or I may be wrong.
I think there is no way the phone will be more than $250 with a 2 year contract on AT&T. My opinion (based on 12 years of buying AT&T phones on 4 lines) it will be around $250, before or after $50 mail-in rebate, depending on when it is getting released. Maybe just straight forward $200 with no rebates if it is released in the fall.
I went down to the local Sprint store around noon to check out the HTC One today. There were only a couple of people in the store. There was a very plain white banner and one silver HTC One for display. Next to the One was an EVO 4G LTE. I was able to walk right over and play with the device. A sales rep came over after a couple of minutes and asked if I have any questions. His knowledge on the phone was limited and we even had a hard time finding some music or getting the internet connection to pick up You Tube so I could check out the speakers. Eventually another shopper came in who was interested in the phone and was considering the HTC One, Note 2 or less likely a the GS4. I asked the rep if they had a lot of people come in and buy the phone. He said they had sold 2.
This isn't exactly a great launch for a company that is heavily relying on the success of one product. Besides checking the latest phone sites, I haven't heard or seen anything from HTC that they are launching their new flagship. There wasn't a long line of excited fanboys waiting to get their hands on the latest and greatest HTC phone. I would consider myself a fan of HTC. I believe they have a superior build quality and I enjoy the love it or hate it Sense. I would like to see HTC thrive in this competitive market.
I am sure a lot of you on this site have either run out to your local Sprint or Best Buy to either check out or buy your HTC One. What was your experience like? Was there a long line or crowd giddy with excitement or has launch day been somewhat of a dud?
Here is some information that will fuel the rumors: I asked the rep if they had a black One in stock. He said that they aren't available at this time. When it does come in, it will only be available in 64 gig. I told him I thought AT&T had exclusivity on the 64 gig model. Sounds viable enough though, since exclusivity on stuff like that is usually not a permanent thing.
And even if your local sprint store hasn't sold many Ones, I'm pretty confident this will be the best selling HTC ever. If it will save HTC or not I have no clue about though.

In the U.S., because of subsidization, there's really no launch "day" as people tend to get a new phone when their contract permits. The masses also aren't as passionate as we are about new mobile devices. As for in-store activities, co-op advertising (Sprint<>HTC), and how devices are featured in-store those are all things that the manufacturers pay for. HTC seems to be doing more for the One this year (maybe because it's unmolested on three carriers) than last year on TV and online. They have a limited budget so it is what it is. Unless incented in a specific financial direction the U.S. carriers could care less what phones people buy as long as they commit to two years of wireless service. So the iPhone, SGSX, and One are all just a means to an end.
I bought the last one available at my closest Sprint store. I go in until about 7:00, though.

I have to disagree. How many times has Apple had a long line on and before their launch day. I'm not a fan of Apple, but they definitely know how to create demand.
I understand HTC doesn't have deep pockets like Samsung and Apple, but I believe they could be more creative to woo the masses. If people really wanted a product, they won't let their two year commitment get in the way. When I bought my EVO 4G LTE there was a lot of buzz in that same store just a year ago.
It is still early and I agree that this phone will sell, but HTC can do better to create demand for their premium phone.

Do you think people are going to line up in advance for the SGS4? I don't. There may be some small crowds at larger stores in bigger markets but Android phones don't have the cult-like following iDevices do. My non-geek friends with Android phones couldn't even tell you their specs. And none of them would pay more than $199 for a phone to get one any earlier than their contract permitted so unless there's a bunch of contracts expiring this month there shouldn't be any rushes at the check-out counters.

Here is some information that will fuel the rumors: I asked the rep if they had a black One in stock. He said that they aren't available at this time. When it does come in, it will only be available in 64 gig. I told him I thought AT&T had exclusivity on the 64 gig model. He said that the exclusivity is only for a short time, and they are waiting to launch it on Sprint. He wasn't sure if the Silver would be available in 64 gig. The iPhone is usually the only device that you need to line up at a retail store to get it on launch day. The HTC One was available online long before it became available in stores, and I'll still get mine delivered from T-Mobile even before they have any in the stores. The flubbed orders and instability of the website seemed to at least suggest the phone is popular online, so I don't think HTC has anything to worry about in terms of demand at the moment.
A lot of phones get staggered availability in the US as well because no two of the four major carriers utilize the same bands and frequencies. You need four different sets of radios to match each of the carriers, meanwhile Europe just gets the single international version. It's probably the reason why the launch had to be delayed, and Europe ended up getting their hands on it first. It's also why you won't see much availability for the black version in the US, because you've already got three versions of the silver phone, and having the black option would mean three more versions of the phone to distribute.
HTC is doing the best they can, but right now they're probably looking primarily to European sales to help drag them out of the ditch.

Right. I'm hoping, since sprint supposedly is the only carrier that currently has signed up for VR and Note 4, that they do some sort of deal on the two for early adopters.

I suspect we won't see any notifications till October. My guess, the phone will probably release around mid-October and they'll start preorders about two weeks prior to release. The good news is that since Samsung has a page on the variant and a model number, It probably going through the FCC review, if not already, and supports an October release.
As the VR headset, I'm not sold on it. I think it'll be interesting device, but I think it'll be very limited in support. I just can't see it having a large enough install base to make it popular for a lot developers to devote time to develop or modify applications for it. And the $200US price tag seems high for a device that may so limited. It's only usable, as we know thus far, just on the phone. No external power source, so just your phone's battery. No way to use with your PC for those games. In fact, there was an article I read that showed that getting an Octulus for the PC was cheaper than the Note 4 and VR. If they throw it in free, I'll get one. If it was $50 or less, most likely, over $100, not likely.
Plus, I wonder how the VR works. I have issues--lazy eye and colorblindness--so I have no idea if it'll work for me. The new 3D technology does not work at all for me. I have 3D TV and Playstation3, and got the active 3D glasses to check out. The 3D did not work at all. I only saw a lower resolution picture since the 3D tech uses one's cross reference between the two eyes to create the depth perception. I use one eye significant more over the other. There's a reason why I've taken a few baseballs to the throat; yes it hurt. So, on the top of the support, you can understand my skepticism for my own potential experience with it.
I'm actually more curious about the S Gear in regards to the US or Sprint. I think that may be more a more useful device. I would have preferred it to run Android, or Android Wear. I like the hardware it's bringing, and hope it'll bring manufactures to do similar. My other concerns with it, will it work with devices that do not have TouchWiz? What about the glass? Is it crystal like a good watch, or some kind of gorilla glass. Watches tend to get scratched if they're any kind of glass. If they have some kind of bundle where they offer the Gear S on the cheap side, say about $100, I would probably go with something like that.

It'll probably work for you since the device shows both eyes live feed (no shutter/no anaglyph). Also there are a bunch of programs that allow you stream PC games to the phone. They are not samsung supported/designed products but they do work (TriDef3D for example, there are also a bunch of android games that support the splitview 3D) I currently have a note 2 and built a custom "google cardboard" vr headset and it works great but the resolution is not so great. So, at least for me, I am accustomed to this type of headset and enjoy it quite a bit for games like Skyrim. In short, you can do everything with an android phone (any of them) that you can do with the Oculus, as there is software and hardware (DIY for most, but we have Galaxy VR now) that supports it.
Also, all US variants of the Note 4 have passed FCC as of a few days ago.

that is excellent news. I hadn't heard Verizon and a couple other hadn't going through yet, but ATT and Sprint had.
And if what you say is true about the VR and my vision, that would be excellent. There's nothing like handing over the 3D glasses to my mother and asking, "is this working? Do you see a 3D picture" And her response, "yes, and it's so cool. wow look at the sky.." it should be noted, this has been the case with most 3D stuff such as 3D rides. The old 3D tech with the blue and red paper glasses worked a little bit, but I've never had that in your face image coming out of the screen. The sad part, if it actually works and does so well, I would probably buy just because of that fact.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm just going on what I've observed in the past. I've never noticed any savings during holiday season/black friday on phones (maybe the lower end / not as popular ones to get more subscriptions) but the newly released high-end phones usually don't get discounts (the year old Note 3 probably will get a liquidation price). I thought that's why manufacturers released phones around this time of the year is because people "have money" or are willing to spend less frugally than other times in the year, meaning full price on the phone. If you're buying the phone without subscription discount (~$800), the full price/non-contract phone might be discounted during the holidays.

I'm a Verizon customer and want to jump ship. Sprint note 4 should have an unlocked bootloader if history repeats itself. Any long time Sprint customers want to fil me in on some pointers? Which plan is the best? Throttling on certain plans? Etc. Etc. I do have Sprint lte in my area soooo I'm very tempted.

If you're looking for an individual plan then sprint is going to be offering a $60 unlimited everything plan with a note 4 purchase.

Isn't that one throttled (optimized)? I think the Framily isn't. On Verizon I can swap my SIM around into any phone with no issues at any time. Can you do that with Sprint too?

I don't believe it is throttled. The framily plan doesn't exist anymore. The new family plans are called family share pack and they have a bucket of 20gb that you share so not unlimited.
The quickest way to swap phones on sprint is by logging into your account and entering the imei of the new phone. Takes just a minute or two but not as simple as swapping sims.

I just actually read in the fine print that the bandwidth is optimized. There are still Framily plans they just aren't advertised. Thanks for the SIM swap info that helps cause a person at Sprint said I needed to come in the Swype.
