Quiet Ear piece - XPERIA X10 General

Is it just my phone, or is the ear piece quite quiet compared to HTC phones? Even at full volume its barely loud. I could see it being a problem in quiet environments. Also mine seems to distort a little bit at full volume. Just wondering if its normal...

Ear peice volume old chestnut

I've kinda been lucky to have had 3 x10's through faults, but there's a but.
My background us that am a tv/ vcr engineer, and I've come across "fudges" to mask faults.
So here goes. All 3 x10's have low call volume. All 3 ear pieces vibrate/resonate at max ear volume.
So imagine if the in ear volume is increased further, more vibration/distortion. Hence low volume, lessons the vibration.
My ten penneth.

yep agreed there
mine does also
any increase is sure to make it worse at max volume, and it bugs the hell out of me 2.
So, now I get it! That's why on the promotional video, the babe was using bluetooth headset all the time, and never been seen using the phone earpiece for calling etc... We should all buy the bluetooth headset then. The only problem is, I cannot find that white bluetooth headset in the market, I've searched everywhere already...
I think cheapest solution is to have ears syringed regular.
Seriously though, it has to be the mounting of the ear piece speaker what's causing the resonance.
I'm 40, and I can hear it, so its clearly a design floor.

[Q] Questions before buying: Speaker Volume

I bought a Desire HD last month but returned it after a few days because it was just too big to be comfortable for daily use but the biggest reason was the crappy speaker volume. I was constantly missing calls because I couldn't hear the phone ringing when in my pocket.
My question is is how loud is the external speaker on the Desire Z? For quick comparison I find my normal Desire just adequate enough to be heard normally.
Would also be interested in hearing a reply on this... Thinking of going ahead now and getting the DZ, but would like to know what the speaker is like for ringtones/alert tones etc...
I would say in general the speaker volume is not as loud as it could be. It is certainly not as loud as my milestone is. I havent missed any calls yet, but I have it turned up all the way for ringer and notification and wish it could be louder.
Its not a deal breaker for me, but could be for some.
The speaker is moderately loud. The main issue people are having is that the quality of sound out of the speaker itself is rather poor. As someone who almost always has his phone on vibrate and never uses actual music as his ringtone, I haven't noticed it.

I'd say the ringer is pretty quiet to be honest, personally I'd like to make it louder as I'm sure I'll never hear it in my pocket.
Andre
Not sounding too good then regarding ringing volume?!
Any TP2 users who can say whether this is better/worse/same as the TP2 volume? Do you find that you are missing more calls?
I'm currently using an Orange San Fran phone whilst deciding, and going from the TP2 to the San Fran, I can say that I miss most calls... lol. For example, the phone underneath the settee last week, and I couldn't find it. So, rang it to try and find it. Couldn't even hear the ringing!!! Only noticed it when was about a foot away from it...
My almost 50 year old ears have problems anyway, so I leave my phone in vibrate mode and in my shirt pocket, so I can feel it more than hear it if I'm in a noisy place.
I've also taken to wearing a BT headset, now that I can hear
/current phone is a TYTN II -- should get me Z tomorrow
I think the Z might be a little too heavy for a shirt pocket :-/

[Q] quiet calls

my dell streak is really quiet when i make phone calls or receive phone calls is there any way to sort this out or am i stuck with a quiet whisper of a speaker
seriously guys anyone have any ideas is my streak just broke or am i doing something wrong
Did you take off the thin plastic film on the ear speaker? as stupid as that sounds a lot of people have had this.
dude try this.
try this..
worked for me..
http://androidaudiohacks.com/home/
it's called Louder Volume Hack
use the make a back up button first and try level 2 r2 somewhere in the middle otherwise may experience distortion.
IF this helps fell free to say thanks!
v3.6 worked, justed upgraded to v4.0 seems to work too
thanks guys it was actually a combination of the 2 that sorted me out suprising how much difference that film makes but it really does and that little program is useful thankyou lots guys
i never had any issue with volume issues on 1.6, O2 2.2, and 2.2
Does it still sound crisp with the film removed? Or is it a bit distorted?
sounds pretty crisp to me but i have only ever used it when it was really quiet so what would i know
Mine is the oppisite.. It sounds like a speaker phone on regular volume. Also my regular speaker is VERY loud and clear, Playing pandora and music sounds great.

What I don't like about Galaxy Note

To be fair to all those considering Note, after all praising (I still do think it's best phone in the world right now), there are definitely drawbacks.
Here is one for example:
The regular phone speaker above the screen (not the loud one on the back) is not pointing sound into one direction. You can even speak on the phone with back side of Galaxy Note put to you ear, you will still be able to hear everything clearly, even on low volume.
On top volume, it is comparable to speaker phone on some other phones, so if you pick up a phone while surrounded by other people (unless you are in very loud place) they will hear the other person.
While in the office, I noticed myself turning volume down a lot when I pick up the phone.
I dont have this kind of problem , my old Nokia phone does.
Sure someone can hear some of the content near the phone you are talking in a dead silent arwa, it's inevitable.
I feel Gnote already perform quite well compare to the other phones, like HTCs in this area

to be honest id rather it was loud and have the ability to turn the volume down than it be too quiet and unable to turn the volume up
as my mum used to say,if its cold its better to have a coat and be able to take it off if you get hot than be cold and need a coat and not have one

It's not a question of whether badly working phone is better than no phone. It's a question of best phone being of high quality. In this case its potential privacy concern.
I switched from iPhones, where it was not an issue. If you put it tight to your ear in silent room, none else hears the person on the other end. Even on loud.
Like I've said above, on Note in silent room regular speaker (not the loud speaker) is comparable to loud speaker on some other phones. You can hear through the phone! Test yourself, make a call with screen side out, battery cover side to your ear, you might be surprised, that it's practically no difference what side you hold it to the ear, even on lowest in-call volume you can still comfortably speak with wrong side of the phone touching your ear.
I have not tried other Notes than mine, but I seriously doubt that it is one time occurrence, seems to me like an engineering issue, not enough sound insulation behind the speaker, just few thin layers of plastic.
If it is such a privacy concern, why not use a bluetooth headset or earbuds? Why not leave the room instead of taking the call in the room?
I mean there are more options that just sitting there letting everyone else hear your conversation if you feel that you have something to hide. But then again, your talking so they naturally are going to hear at least 1 part of the conversation no matter what. So I fail to see how you can really be concerned with privacy when they hear everything you say anyways, right?
If you were that worried about privacy you would send texts, emails or use an IM program to send messages so that no one knew what was being said or talked about. But since you are willing to sit in the room and let them listen to what at least you are saying, then you are not overly concerned with them at least hearing part of the conversation.
When I get a call that I dont want anyone else to hear I either leave the room, put on my earbuds or tell the person I will call them back when I can talk. So really it isnt about privacy concerns at all, it is just an inconvience for you to know that the speaker is loud. Louder than you are used to at least.
Fuuny that you mention this because i never thought i'll use those bt headsets until i own the Note. Each time i put it in my ear, my worry is not the volume but the number of heads turning towards me and the the sheepish grin that follows.

A damn proud Galaxy Note owner.
Maybe try turn down the volume and using a case.
I wonder how those HTC phones perform because they all have ear speakers that are wide across the width of the phone itself.

Lol..the speaker grill on HTC phone what we call it, is just a gimmick. If we see inside, the speaker none the less is only small portion on the middle side

That's a really good point. Something else to improve in the Note2 along with moving power button!

Loudspeaker Quality

As there is no similar topic specially for Loudspeaker I decided to create one.
I like the speakers of the phone sound good and bassy.
Although I had to replace the speakers (repair),
(cuz it got low by it self (hardware defect))
But I noticed the bottom speaker is thinner and more high frequency specialized in the other side the top speaker for low frequency (bass)
Idk if it is hardware fault or it is designed by Sony,
I want to know your thoughts abt the loudspeakers ?
I don't know about Z3, but in the Z2 the top speaker is more clear than the bottom one. I think it's probably some kind of technology. But in the other side, if you're watching a film in horizontal direction, you can hear that everything is happening on the left side and that's annoying.
if the phone gets wet especially the loudspeaker area the loudspeakers stop making sound and thd sound is emitted from some sort of loudspeakers internal to the phone which appears the be louder from the back of the phone.
i listen music in the shower, so thats how i found out. though it was interesting to share

That's kind of weird, my neighbor have the Z2 and he never had such problem, are you sure it's not hardware fault? If my neighbor find such problems he directly comes to me to ask me what's this etc, but I know he don't have this problem cuz u also use his phone to compare etc, so I guess for you its a hardware fault maybe?

Yeah I also listen to music when I shower and I can confirm that,
oh no dont get me wrong it's not a complaint, im suprised the phone knows when its wet enough to stop the loudspeaker, its a good thing =)

Hmm maybe the speakers feel pressure when it gets wet and it shows the volume down / stops the speakers ?
As an audiophile I will say that as a Mobile Loudspeaker it is quite good. Compared to anything else though it is still a low sound quality speaker.
But as a mobile speaker though, it is very good. It is loud, clear and doesn't "break up" that much. It got some bass, but not much.
I think it sounds better with the surround function on. :good:
Its pretty good, but not near the M8. Id say second best of any phone out. I don't get the left/right mismatch many of you have mentioned., I have been through 4 Z3s for cosmetic defects and all sound equal. Maybe its a quality control issue or I have bad ears.
When I go into the service menu and do a test of the speakers, I get the sound coming out of the top/left speaker on both. What's going on there? There is perhaps some sound coming out of the bottom/right but it's tiny in comparison.
