Before I debranded my phone I backed up my contacts to the memory card. After importing them back, all the pictures are blured & very low res.
Is there anyway of backing up your contacts that doesn't destroy the pictures?
double post!
mines werr all kept mate. .

The thumbnails look fine but when I open the contact or when im reciving a call the full size picture is really blured.
me 2 when i sync from sonyericsson or make from a backup program or from google contacts everything is ok but all the pictures are blured
i guess best way is to keep the pictures in ur mem card and then link it with the contacts again. coz the sony ericsson sync server thingy probably have a size limit on the picture
Re-linking contacts sucks... especially if you've got more than 10 mates, or have other people than your mum and sister on the phone...
My guess is that the backup is OS based, so Android only backs up standard contact resolution, whereas the higher res pictures are probably attached via the SE interface... Could be a good question for SE, except their answer will without doubt be:
"I would suggest using the Sony Ericsson Update service software as this may fix the issue"
Well, thankfully I wasn't told that a software update will help me maintain contact picture quality, but I was told SE don't give a crap:
"In regards to your inquiry, when you backup your contacts to your SIM card or Memory Card, the personalization information like Facebook or Twitter links are not going to be saved. Only the contacts and the numbers. When it comes to the pictures, there's no feature to make sure that the backed up pictures is saved in a better resolution. For further options, you can contact your local Sony Ericsson in Australia at 1-300-650-050.
As part of Sony Ericsson's commitment to excellent customer service, we offer a wide variety of mobile products to suit your lifestyle. If you require more information, or have any other questions, please visit our website at SonyEricsson.com/Xperia"
Thanks Sony. you rock.

Alow, for the last 4 days that i have my JAM i have concluded that the bundled caller ID that displays contact photos SUCKS!!
first of all i dont like applications that are slow, means they are badly coded, and caller id takes like 10 seconds to load my 260 contacts database. Other than that it seems too buggy and not usable enought.
I have also tried Photo Contacts which seems a nice alternative however the lack of an easy way to add contact pictures have put me off buying it. I dont wanna name files in order to assign contact pictures. Throught the contact list could have been superb. Althought the full screen contact pictures are awesome.
Any alternatives to them? or shall we start coding?
My wish is an application that use the photo from the contact.
In Outlook2003 you can assign photos to your contacts why not use them?
for that we will need to wait until WM5, if i am not mistaken in WM5 Pocket outlook supports contact pictures and hopefully activesync 4 will sync them as well.
Take a look at Photo Contacts v1.1 where you can assign photos from within the program. Works like a charm!
How do you do that? Its that one i hav tried, th trial version
Loboman can you send me your version to try it out to [email protected] ? it seems that the demo is version 1.0 and not 1.1!
Of course, I spend over $20 to get this program for my PDA2k (and now my JAM), and some guy posts the full, latest version right here.
DOH!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=20500
Have to admit, though, it's way better than IA Caller ID and it's full screen!

Hi
I wrote a little app called Fonebook which syncs your facebook friends photos into your outlook contacts - when you then sync with your phone you get the profile image.
Im looking at adding a few more features and possibly creating a "Pro" version to try and recoup the cost of the library Im having to use so I can get full sized images into outlook (the outlook api sucks!)
Im not sure which windows phone allow the caller id to be full screen (I know mine doesnt!) - if you know of anywhere I might be able to get a list of smartphones/pda's which support this could you point me in that direction please!
If you have any ideas for this type of application, or have any suggestions when it comes to creating a "pro" version of something as oppose to relying on donations could you please fill in this short survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=xOAJWNgBXsnGAopW7zqDNQ_3d_3d
Thanks for reading this (the current version of the app is here in case you are curious: http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=2442338999
Thanks
Ross
you might wanna take a look at s2u2 it's a iphone slider app which gives us wm touch screen users full screen caller id if there was a way for your app to resize the facebook pictures to the size of the screen wqvga, qvga, vga, wvga
you may also want to look at skybook. I think it has a similar feature where it takes the profile picture from facebook and adds it to your contacts picture. I tried it once with skybook and it worked fairly well until I received errors with logging in, so I uninstalled it.
using the new facebook app from winmo 6.5 and don't have any issue logging in, only problem is that I can't update the photos like in skybook.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
good luck
I would also be interested in some way to sync the contact details from Facebook to WM.
people tend to keep facebook up to date with phone numbers email addresses etc, and it would be handy to have this information downloaded automatically.
EDIT: I see you have covered the fact that Facebook block this option on the page above, but I still think its a worthy idea and have joined the petition!
Fosimo was the only thing that I could get to work for syncing facebook data. My only complaint was that it added everyone's birthdays to my calendar...
I like the idea behind this, however, I do not use outlook on my home pc.
Does this work without hooking your phone to your PC? I ask because I rarely ever sync my phone with my home PC, I do sync to my work PC but I don't sync the email, and it's a work pc, so no facebook there....
I know that new SPB mobile shell program does this but I really don't see a point in installing that and keeping it around just to sync outlook pictures. I prefer to use my touchflo that came installed on my phone. I just picked up a Fuze, my old phone was an 8525 and SPB was the best solution for it...
Is there a standalone program that would do the same thing?
You really should put a mirror of that file somewhere else, man. SkyDrive is being broken. I was searching for an app like that, saw Fonebook and OutSync. i don't care which one I get, i just want a link. Hors Skydrive, please.
well to be honest fonebook is the best app i saw so far for syncing facebook contact pics with outlook contacts.
i liked the feature to be able to choose manually which facebook contact corresponds to an outlook contact. (a missing feature to many other apps)
the only problem it has is that at the moment almost everyone use high resolution screen mobile phones with vga and wvga and the pics that sync with your app are very small and blurry when viewed in full screen incoming call apps like s2u2 that most people use. so a great addition to your app would be to add an option to download the contact pics to a chosen resolution that corresponds to vga/wvga/qvga/wqvga and to save the cashe somewhere in the pc even.
please keep this project up and running and update it asap
Got a Topaz, and have TF3D (the touchy interface from HTC), set that up to sync image to facebook.
So My images go Facebook -> phone -> outlook
instead of Facebook -> outlook -> phone
Works for me.
Personally, I don't think there's much money to be made on this (a pro version) when newer phones have this built in, and there's already other good free apps out there, unless you can add some seriously impressive functions, and even then, the free competitors would soon add those same features.

Hope can syncs the high resolution pics in next version.
And is it cannot syncs the birthday if the user didn't type the birthday year?
So, I just bought the Epic.. Coming from HTC Pro 2... Syncing with my contacts from my Exchange 2007 server and Outlook 2007.
So, I have loaded up most of my contacts with photos using Outlook.. The issue is, they degrade the image to 72x72.. Looks horrible.. At one time or another, I used Photo Contacts Pro for Windows Mobile, and it made the image quality 300x300 which was much better,
So, now on the Epic, I want to start replacing some of the contact pictures I have.. What is the best way of going around that? If I use Oulook (which is the fastest method), it will degrade the picture to a blury/jaggy mess... If I use the contact settings on the Epic, I see I can load them from my Picassa... But what resolution/dpi will that be at?
Is there a better method?
Bonus question: Is there a way to backup all the links I make with my contacts (ie: linking each to Facebook), so when I put a new custom ROM on, I woun't lose all that work?
Thanks in advance for any help!
I would say the problem is def the limitations of outlook. I have noticed this happen to me before when syncing my contacts from outlook to any device I used iphone the biggest problem. Now using android I have google manage all my contacts because its effortless. Just type in your email and they are there. I will note though that you can set the images of your contacts from gmail contact page but they still do not seem to be quite as high quality as when I set them via the phone. But once they are set threw the phone the quality will remain high on the next device I sync them to.
So I just got my Atrix from ATT, coming from WinMo 6.5 (Tilt2), and am a bit lost.
There used to be guides and such for people upgrading, but I've hopped on the train so late I'm having trouble finding a good one!
So feel free to point me towards better resources or useful threads on here especially from the perspective of WinMo to modern Android.
But for now, first question: what is the best way sync Outlook and my new phone?? I've got Outlook 2010 and have been building an address book in it since my MPx220! I know I could export/import a .csv but am far more interested in actual sync, with contacts and calendar at the minimum. Preferably free, but if not OK (as long as it works). So far I've tried MyPhoneExplorer but it can't see the phone via USB. Trying www.soocial.com now, looks interesting...
Is it ever gonna finish inspecting my 16GB card? Can't find a progress indicator anywhere...
I know it's not helping but just wanted to say that I'm exactly in the same boat with you. I used Windows Mobile since around 2004 (with mpx 220, tilt, and tilt2) and I'm kind of clueless about this whole android thing
Oh and I could not find a way to directly sync my outlook contacts with atrix either. Also, if you go with the .csv route, it does not sync some fields, for example Work2 phone.

Def. try www.soocial.com It's free (as long as you're less than 250 contacts) and it's *ongoing* Sync like we're used to.
Goofy thing is, Google is said to make a calendar sync (outlook --> google), why don't they have their own for contacts??
Well, so far I'm a touch underwhelmed. Coming from the WinMo world I'm used to many things being customizable, often in the program, if not maybe in the registry or easily swapped out for other software.
I'm noticing a lot of dumb choices and a lot of things that don't give me obvious options.
Let's call it a Universal Inbox but it won't have your Gmail! There's a way around, you setup instead as regular IMAP email and use that app or end up using both email apps... grr! Better 3rd party alternative?
No 'file as' in contacts or ability to customize much of anything about how it looks, what it shows...
Friggin 'security lock timer' setting is disabled when using fingerprint!
Oh, and scanning my SD card *never finished*! After a couple hours (during which I couldn't install anything from the marketplace--though it gave me NO error to let me know why it was ignoring me pressing install!) I yanked the card. Maybe if I clear it out first?
Of course it's much (MUCH) better than my POS Tilt2, but I'm not quite convinced it's worth it, yet.
Your card scanning issue is not normal. IT STINKS! Something from the school of the united nations

I came from windows also. Companion Link is the only software to give you a true live sync between outlook and google calender and contacts that I have found. It wasn't free but I don't remember how much. It syncs your desktop outlook to your online google account which is automatically synced to your device.

For the contacts things you can always setup your gmail account as an exchange account in outlook and sync it that way, but then again it would be the same as syncing with gmail itself.
As for an outlook sync that isn't third party, there is no way to do it other than having an exchange account.
I found and downloaded a program called My Phone Explorer, it says it can sync outlook contacts & calendars if you install it's companion software to your PC. I did not have a chance to try it out yet, I'll update this thread once I try it.
Also, did you guys find out how to set custom ring tones? Like copying wav, mp3, ogg etc. files from my old phone to this and make them show up on the ringtone selections?

It had been in my Tilt 2 and had about 10gig of various files, some WM6.5 stuff (.cabs, apps, etc) and media. I formatted it and put back in the phone (couldn't do anything with it while it was scanning) and it was fine.
Marketplace didn't actually do anything when I hit install until the card was happy.
So far I'm pretty impressed with Android but not so much with this phone. The combination of not-latest OS with updates being locked to ATT/Moto's discretion worries me as the Tilt2 I'm coming from was absolutely crippled by the crap ATT OS version available (though at least it wasn't impossible to flash it!).
My other big problem is that while this phone is supposedly lightning fast, but how does that make any difference in actual use, since this dual-core CPU and nVidia chipset are a small part of a big and diverse market, for which the Nexus S and all the similar Samsungs set the baseline? Example, I noticed I can't play at decent framerate a 720p h.264 media file (.torrent downloaded Top Gear, 1.5GB on class 6 microSD), even in QQview--which can't seem to access the SD card directly (it only sees the ~11GB internal which is called SDcard), by the way. So what good does this extra speed do if there are no apps to take advantage of it? And how many others are going to have troubles accessing my new 32GB microSD because they only see the internal?
I'm also fairly annoyed by the lack of customization in the settings. At worst every damn thing in WinMo was customizable via registry. I usually find a setting each day in Android which I should have easy control over but don't. Example: notifications being the same volume for texts/emails as BS systems sounds I haven't figured any way to turn off... again a missing setting that's almost there: I noticed within text messaging and email I can set specific sounds (including silent) but for the overall system one there's no silent option (which would be overridden by the selected ones above)... Maybe there's some apps that do some of what I want, but having to pay or sideload are both kinda foreign concepts to me, especially for small system hacks!
But on the other hand it's very responsive, does seem to play 720p Xvid torrent downloads OK (though I haven't watched one all the way through), and the voice features are great.
One other annoyance is that while BT links to my car automagically it doesn't link to my Panasonic handsets at home unless I turn BT off and back on for some reason...
So given how much I paid (premiere, non-contract) I'm leaning towards return. Wish the damn ATT-bands Nexus S was out!!
but, more importantly did you get the critic references?

Email should be straightforward, just open the email app on the Honor 7 and input your email address. It should do all the technical stuff for you.
If you have a PC, copy all your photos to that from your Samsung. If you want them back on your phone just copy them across from your PC to your new Honor 7.
For contacts, I normally back them up to google and then when I have a new android device and i first set it up there is an option to sync them. This can also be found under settings>accounts. This might be useful...

I often change my smartphone, so here's my advice :
You should always backup your data on your Google account. Sync all your contacts on google (you can find easy tutorials on the internet), sync all your pictures and videos with Google Photo app, backup your SMS/MMS with "SMS Backup And Restore" app, ... This way, you'll be able to change your phone very often, format your phone when you want, and do whatever you like without even thinking about your data. Everything will have a backup online.
Good luck

Hi,
I had a similar challenge. Without rooting the device, Helium backup works mostly. With the paid version, just put both devices to the same WLAN to transfer stuff from one device to the other. Some apps can be restored to the new device (including their settings), others don't. In addition I was also using SMS backup.
After taking the longer route of backing up my contacts to gmail and then from there to the Honor 7, realised that the phone had a sweet little option to simplify it. You have to pair your old and new phones via Bluetooth and then the Honor can act as a car kit to import all contacts from your old phone. Thoughtfully done ☺
How does one "copy" network profiles from one phone to another please
Sara...
This is wow feature in Honor 7. I have successfully imported the contacts from my Oneplus One phone which was complaining to export more than 500 contacts. Thanks a lot for enlightening me with this feature in Honor 7.
