Hi All
Spent a while trying to figure out how to transfer the text messages I had on my X1 over to my X10 and thought i would post how I did this as I couldn't seem to find anything in the X10 section of the forum so here goes.
So install and run SMS exporter 0.5 (for WM) - cant remember how I found it but either google or pm me. This creates an xml file which you can copy over to your pc.
Go to the android market and download and install SMS Backup & Restore.
Now I already had a load of new text messages on my X10 so I did a restore from my X10 and copied the xml file over to my pc (it was in a folder on the X10 called SMSBackupRestore).
I edited the xml in notepad and compile the two files together from my X1 and X10. Saved this file and copied back over to my X10 (to the same directory i copied the file from).
Then using SMS Backup & Restore i restored the texts back to my x10 using the function to remove duplicates.
Too easy.
Like I said pm me if you have any problems and I hope this helps a few people out there, or at least saves you some time googling
am surprised no one has replied here, there you go hope it helps

I have hard reset my device and re installed all my software, just got it perfect and discovered I have lost 1 file. I backed up the device before resetting, so the file I need should be in the backup.stg
I could backup now, restore the old one, save the files and restore my new setup, but seems like a long way around, Is there any software to 'open' the *.stg file so I can extract the file I want??
Thanks
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/de/index.php?soft=354
found using this google search
http://www.google.dk/search?q=backup.stg+tool&ie=UTF-8&hl=da&btnG=Google-søgning
Hmmm..
Perhaps I should have done that myself
Thanks very much my problem is now solved.
so it works ok that tool or
another one ?
what about if the backup is made as something other then a full backup ?
Not sure about incremental backups, but the util is very good.
You just open the STG file and can see all the contents in a properly structured manner. Getting files out of it is easy , simply copy and paste.
I took me about 1 minute to find and extract the file I was after.
Saved me a lot of time and messing with backups and restores...

Hi,
I need to do a hard reset on my device and want to store all my contacts somewhere safe so I don't have to manually input them all again. The problem is I don't use outlook on my PC. Is there any way I can pull them off the Exec and store them on my PC for safe keeping?
I would normally throw them on the SIM but there appears to be no tool to add them all at once and I am not manually moving 150 contacts myself
--
Sorry for the duplicate post, I didn't mean to put it in general
Does nobody know? There must be a quick way to save your contacts somewhere safe? What does everyone else do when they need to do a hard reset?
Is there a particular folder on the Exec that may contain all of my contents? I could then copy it onto my PC and replace later.
there is a way you can backup the contacts database, i cant find it tho, i dont think it was on this forum, but there was a deffinate way to backup the databases for this kind of work
soz cant give a proper solution
It was something about taking a backup of "pim.vol" from the My Documents folder, then fiddle around trying to overwrite the empty one after you've done your hard reset, but I can't find it either....
pim.vol is found the root directory of the device, copy to sd, reboot, copy back... supposedly, havent done it, but read it. you may have to show files in ROM.

Yeah, I read this yesterday and tried it and it works a treat. I now keep a copy of pim.vol just incase. Good practice for those who don't know it exists
One tip - make sure you've set the 'Region' in settings back to your original one before you restore the file, otherwise it won't even let you start the contacts app! Had a moment of panic there myself last night...
What all in pim.vol Just contact or like SMS and MMS to?...
Coz I am trying to find a way to take a back up of my SMS, and I dont get any software working yet.
Hi guyz, recently I updated my rom version to 2.53.707.4... Before that I backup all my SMS and other stuffs using PPCPimBackupV2.8.. I had a folder called saved SMS in the previous version, so when I backup I saved all the massages in that folder too..
So after flashing I restore everything but when I got to massages through start and in the drop down menu I couldn't see the saved folder.. Previously we can juz go to all massages and view all the folders and even create a new folder but with the new rom I couldnt do so..
So is there any fix for it? Thanks in advance..
I'm searching for those people who have root their phones.. if you are the guy and willing to help me... please email me... I just need your help for about 10mins only... PLZ
ANYONE root his phone already? I need Help...
Very easy...
Steps: You need to
1. root your phone first..
2. install ASTRO File Manager (by metago) or other else
3. install SMS Backup & Restore created by Ritesh Sahu
4. backup all your messages by using SMS Backup & Restore and name the backup file as 1.xml
5. using ASTRO, go to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/ and you will see a db file called mmssms.db (it is the file where all your messages stored in the phone)
6. copy the mmssms.db to your sd card (anywhere, as long as you can remember where it is)
7. copy the MMSSMS.DB (my db file, will be sent to you later if you can help) and paste it in the /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
8. then go to messaging, check if my messages can be shown at there
9. if yes, please backup it by using SMS Backup & Restore and name the backup file as 2.xml
10. then by using ASTRO file manager, go to /mnt/sdcard/SMSBackupRestore, you will see 2 xml files, (1.xml & 2.xml)
11. please send the 2.xml file to me, thank you.
12. Recovery! go to messaging, delete all messages (my messages), then restore it by using SMS Backup & Restore, choose 1.xml
13. If failed, go to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/, replace the db file by your own mmssms.db file which is stated in step 6...
Anyone can help me?
Some of the messages inside are my beloved messages. I wanna keep it..
if you can help, add me in Facebook (Kh Coon)
or reply me at here...
EDIT: Sure someone will help.
to backup you sms messages you don't need root afaik, just download the app (SMS Backup & Restore from Ritesh Sahu) from the market and give it a go.
I've used this app before and as long as you install it on your new phone you will be able to restore them all.
But.. my messages stored in the form of db file (mmssms.db)
SMS backup & restore can't open it...
right, so you're talking also about mms messages.
I never send any mms, so am afraid I can't help you any further, maybe you can find a similar app for backing up mms in the market?

I can do it
Does anyone know how to delete files received over Bluetooth??
I transferred the wrong VCF file to my S5 using Bluetooth and now my S5 is loaded with all the wrong contacts. I have deleted every contact from the phone but every time I boot up my S5, all the contacts re-appear. I wondered whether the phone was importing the VCF file automatically so I decided to delete it but I can find no option to delete the file.
I have been through the Bluetooth menu and it only shows 'open' as an option on the file. I have also searched my phone for the file with no success. There is no 'Bluetooth' folder on the internal storage either and I have not put in my SD card yet.
My S5 is not rooted and any solution can not include rooting. My boss won't appreciate me hacking a work phone!
For someone who works in the IT industry, I feel like I'm losing the plot on this one!
Can any of you lovely XDA people help?

Hi Djimmy,
Thanks for your reply.
I forgot to mention that I checked the Download folder also. I've also used Astro to search my phone for the files with no results.
As for your Google suggestion, we are testing out Google Apps and so the account I have used with the phone is completely blank. That rules out any possibility of a Google sync being the cause.
On my old S3, I only had to go to the Bluetooth folder to delete any files received so I don't get why this folder no longer exists unless its in a location that I need root to access.
If anyone has any ideas, throw them at me and I'll give them a go!

It is possible that the exchange with bluetooth. may allow adding contacts without saving the file, but in this case if you delete this means is that I do not understand sorry.

Hi termdj,
Thanks for your reply but I did state that there is no 'Bluetooth' folder anywhere on my device as per the below quote.

I have manually checked EVERY folder visible in My Files and cannot find a single folder labelled Bluetooth. I have selected show hidden files in the settings.
I have used Astro to search for the folder and the files themselves without success.
I have even gone as far as used an adb shell to try and locate the folder but I dont have and wont ever have root access on this S5 which means i cant check the system folder which is where I believe its going to be.
Can others confirm they have a Bluetooth folder on an actual S5?? If not then this may be a wider issue.
Mine has the Bluetooth folder.. Sorry I missed your statement about not having the folder. I did pick up that if I delete a file in the folder, that afterwards it deletes the folder. The folder appears only when I receive a bluetooth file
Thats odd behaviour...
I'll give it a go and see if anything pops up and update you later.
Cheers!

Hi lwiss.
Thanks for the info but i cant even rename the file. The only option available is open.
I have also emailed Samsung to ask them to file a bug for this as one of my work colleagues has also suffered the same issue!
I'll keep people updated on here.

Done some testing using some of ur ideas and i still cant get at the VCFs.
I created a text file on my laptop and sent this to the S5. This appeared in my download folder. Not exactly what others get but its a damn good start! I decided to see if i could delete it through the recieved files option. It still only shows open. I went back to download folder and deleted the file. When i returned to recieved files, the text file came up as 'not found' and was removed from the list of files. Yet my VCF transfers remain suggesting they are still somewhere on the phone.
Im emailing Samsung again and telling them to provide a delete option on the recieved files bit or i will root my phone and find the offending files myself. They will then be held responsible for any issues that arise.
If anyone has anymore ideas im all ears

It's my guess as well that VCF-Files are treated different by Bluetooth share function, maybe for security reason.
To remove any received VCF-files from the "virtual" Bluetooth shared folder go to:
Settings -> Application manager
In the apps list go to "ALL" and search for "Bluetooth share".
Tap it and again tap on clear data button as well. That's it!
Seems that part of the framwork keeps track of the transfered data and keeps it in some container or drops it into download folder, depending on the file ending.
Anyway, hope this helps!

Use notepad or any other text editor and create a blank VCF file having the same name you put for the first VCF file that you transferred via bluetooth.
Then transfer that blank VCF file to your device via bluetooth. You should no longer have that problem!!!
