making the photo light behave like a camera flash? - XPERIA X10 General

Is there any way to make the photo light flashes like a camera flash?
turning it on all the time while taking a photo is very annoying.

dont think so.

Flashlightapp does the trick
it's a widget.

Another app is XPERIA Flashlight: it's an app with timed light-on presets (including unlimited), as well as a widget to turn the LED on and off.

Thanks for the reply,
But those apps is turning the LED light on, not using it like a camera flash.
Maybe I am asking too much.

its not a true flash so i don't think we will ever see real camera flash.

No. That only works in 2.0/2.1. That's why you have to turn it on and off. Hopefully we'll get a "real" camera flash in 2.1.

HD2 camera flash can not be switched on at always on mode

I upgraded to the latest ROM version 3.14.831.3 couple of weeks ago, after that I found the camera flash light does not work when switch to always on mode. The flash light would be not on until I take a photo which acts the same as the auto mode.
I have tried the factory reset, which seems it only restore back to the latest ROM with clean settings, but the problem is still there.
Any one has same issue?
Yes, it's the new software version that does that.
I was thinking if we could take the files from the old camera software and put them in this version.
It's annoying not just if you want to use the phone as a flashlight (solved with torch app, but not that handy) but the picture quality in low light conditions totally sucks, because it won't focus when the flash is on.
This is by design... it's SUPPOSED to behave like that! The way the flash illuminated constantly like a torch/flashlight in the old ROM was very annoying... it wasted battery power, blinded your subjects and was distracting for everyone else around. You won't find a conventional 'proper' camera exhibiting this behaviour (actually, they can't anyway due to the way xenon flash tubes work).
The new flash behaviour in the new ROM mirrors how a conventional camera would behave and, IMO, is a big improvement.
As for focusing, I've never had much of a problem and think the HD2 does a very good job in low light most of the time. The only real solution to accurate low-light focusing is an IR focus-assist lamp.

If it is by design, HTC should disable the option in the camera mode to have the flash light always on. And also disable the flash light in the Camcorder too, it works totally fine in the Camcorder mode.
Plus they do not mention this change in the ROM description.

I think you're misunderstanding how the camera app is designed to work... when you select the option to force the flash on, you're telling the camera app to always fire the flash, regardless of the ambient light level. The flash LED is not supposed to stay lit the whole time that 'force flash on' is enabled and using the flash LED as a flashlight to see where you're going has got nothing to do with the camera app. By modifying the behaviour of the flash LED in the new ROM, HTC have replicated the behaviour of a regular camera and have enhanced the camera app in doing so. Having the flash LED constantly on has got nothing to do with taking better pictures.
When in video mode, of course the LED should be constantly on as its purpose in that mode is that of a video light. This is correct functionality.

I think you're right about this. What would be nice is if there was a way to have a little more control over it. For example - if you're in reaaally low light and want to take a picture you can't even see what it is you're trying to take a picture of unless the flash LED is on - so I understand the op's frustration. What would be ideal is if there was a way to tell the HD2 to activate the LED flash X seconds prior to taking the picture. That way you could make it come on for a second or two before it takes the pic so you can actually see what you're takin a pic of.
or, for those rare times when the light must be on when taking pics, you could always turn on the torch and then start the camera.
Any recommended torch app for HD2?

Use tiny flashlight + led, in the app itself(not working in widget), once the light is on, press on the onscreen button again while the light is still on to keep it on, press that button again to off it.
Meaning, press once to turn it on, press it again while the light is on to keep it on, press 3rd time to turn it off. It's obviously a bug, but great workaround for our overprotective tab
WARNING: Extensive use might damage the hardware as it does create heat.
Thanks,
it doesn't seem to work but i have a suspicion that it may be to do with the Kernel that i am currently on ([OC1.2&1.4GHz][KernelPatch])
might jump back over to modaco's and see what results i get
Yeah I once used LED Light by picolyl , its in market . It worked nice on my JMEv2

Cheers, ive got both the Flash Light apps now and i have just installed the modaco Kernel to see if it resolves my light light issue.
Seems to be working "better" (i.e. the flash light does come on now) but my light goes on and off while using these programs
I wonder if its an issue compatibility issue then. as i am also running overcome rom 1.1.3 + modaco kernel similar to your setup.

Do as I said previously, and u will have light keeps on instead of couple sec off, remember, when the light is on, press the button again!! Not working in widget mode, please follow instructions to the word before saying it's not working.
Have a look at 'Flashlight' in the market too. Does the LED light, but also has some fun options for the screen. Red/blue flashing lights, Amber warning lights, etc. Works fine on my Tab.

just for the sake of warning tho, 1 thing I noticed is that the light density is a bit different from still photo flash vs video light

Discolored pictures from rear camera

Anyone seen or heard anything similar to this? I'll open the camera app to take a picture and the view looks ok. Once I take the picture it comes out discolored, sort of like it has a retro effect on it. It mostly happens when using flash, and once taken the view shows the retro look from then on until I restart the app. I've tried other camera apps and get the same thing.
Ive uploaded two sample pics, the first being an example of any picture I take with flash(and the view I see until the app is closed) and the second is a shot without flash. Even though that picture is of a lit tv, lights on in the room and the kinect sensor pointing at it, that picture discoloration happens in any room with any type of light.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Well, the green discoloration is from the invisible green laser the kinect is giving off, which has likely damaged your camera.
I've heard of this happening with DSLRs.
It was happening well before I put it in the same room as the Kinect though. The 2nd picture shown(without flash) doesn't have the discoloration, and was taken just seconds after the first. Is there something different the camera does when using flash that could be damaged? Seems to take pictures just fine without flash.
are you taking this thru the built in camera app..
Do you have any other camera apps installed are all the camera settings set to stock..
these are things that could effect camera / camera flash quality.. i had similar issue after installing a cam app from market uninstalling that app solved it.
dont remember what app it was sorry
If you are using a case, It may be effecting the flash; I know when I use the stock camera app with flash in a dark room it gives a greenish tint, over the whole photo, when in the case. Taking my tablet out of the case fixes the issue. Probably the thick case bounces my flash across the clear protective glass over the lens. Your picks look a little different though.
When you get the greenish screen, instead of closing the app, try toggling one or all of the three---white balance, color effect, or scene mode and see if the screen reverts to normal.
Just tried changing the settings before and after taking a picture. It seems the discoloration happens only when scene is set on auto and flash is on. Changing from auto to incandescent with flash on takes normal pictures and fixes the screen discoloration. Switching back to a different scene setting and back to auto fixes the discoloration until you take another picture. I'd say it's software related but its happened on 3rd party camera apps.

If you havent already,..... take it outside into Natural sunlight. Set flash to always on(just to test) and every other setting to auto. Take a few test pics. Some close-ups and some landscapes to test the colors. My guess is the outdoor shots will look fine.

Flash with photosphere?

Would it be possible to make a mod to use flash with the photosphere?
It would help me out alot in certain situations.
I just tried with an app that turns on the flashlight but anytime I went to camera it says it can't connect to the camera. Tried starting up with the camera app then turning on the light but that makes camera/gallery crash.

Hmm, I'm sure someone could dev an app/mod for such use...
Thanks for trying anyway :good:
While flash would be cool, what would be even cooler is a way to lock exposure and white balance from the first frame.

weird flash light?!!!

Noticed that my Note 3 N9005 has weaker flash light compared to my S3, the weak flash gives my pictures in dark a tinged yellow color, is it ia something I do while taking pics make it yellow or is my flash defective??
downloaded 3rd party flashlight app and it did give me a much stronger flashlight than phone's flashlight widget, however; I still don't know how to make flash stronger while taking pictures or videos, any help would be appreciated.

Flash in pictures should be on full power (if needed).
Flashlight apps wont use full power, else you will break you LED.
It doesnt have enough cooling to be turned on on full power.

I think if you want high quality pictures get a high quality camera.
This is still a phone, but should produce nice images tho.
You could try to make a picture and attach it here so we can see what you mean.
But its possible the flash is not working like its supposed to.
Ok will try thanks
