Since I see a lot of people complaining about keyboard lag on their phones, I thought I'd start a thread of tricks you can use to minimize or even eliminate the keyboard lag. If you guys have any tricks or ways to minimize lag, post them, and I will update this first post. We can use this as a collection of ideas for fixing the problem.
I'll start with my personal favorite.
1. Install the stock android 2.1 messaging app. Use adb to push the Mms.apk attached below, to /system/app. On some odex'd roms, you may need to adb shell rm /system/app/Mms.odex as well.
Although this first suggestion always pretty much eliminates lag for me, and is a much much faster and better app IMO, we can have some other things to try as well.
2. Install a different keyboard. Here are some options
-Stock android keyboard
-Better Keyboard (from market)
-Smart Keyboard (from market)
-Swype (from forums, search for swype lite)
-Shapewriter (from market)
-SwiftKey (post #5 of this thread) - thanks danaf37
3. Disabling sounds, haptic feedback, and word completion stuff
Let me know if you have any other tricks you use. Hope this helps someone!

That really doesn't help anyone who has a use for their camera and video.
for those who want to try it, here's the swiftkey keyboard. try it, it is fast to type with
I use the Android Keyboard and I have no lag at all. I perfer it over the pile of **** xda keyboard and that HUGE pile of **** Better Keyboard.

This is my first time using a phone without a physical keyboard. I'm trying to get the hang of using Swype, but I find that I'm faster using the stock Android keyboard (which actually better than I thought it would be). Does anyone have any tips on using Swype effectively? I've read a bunch of FAQs, etc. but I just must be a slow learner.

Just use it for a solid 1-3 days without switching back to the stock keyboard. Changing some of the settings might help as well.

I found that changing the swype settings helped my accuracy.
Settings > Locale and text > Swype Settings > Speed vs Accuracy
I changed the speed vs accuracy slider just a tad to the right so it is about 40% fast response vs error tolerance. It used to be about 20% fast response vs error tolerance.
I tried swype on the G1 and didnt like it that much. I gave it a chance on the vibrant and now i am loving it. I am impress with the prediction. You just have to give it a chance.
When I first heard of Swype I completely hated the idea, never gave it a shot
Got my Vibrant and for once decided to try it out, I'm fairly impressed on how easy and accurate it is once I got past trying to type in each letter, and the text prediction really is pretty good at deciphering my scribbles
IMO swiftkey tops them both. It predicts your current word and suggests your next word.

I couldn't stand swype. I am actually usinf better keyboard. I got it for my g1 and find it really nice for the most part. Then again i am not big on the whole pediction stuff. I actually type quite fast solo on the keuboard.

Classic!
Faster, yes... but are you actually typing real words?!?
I use better keyboard, its closest to the stock key board I have found. I've used it since my G1 and by far the best keyboard I have found. Its $2.99 but totally worth it, plus there are tons of skins for it.
I use swype in portrait and the stock keyboard if i need to type in landscape. But I can't wait until BlindType is released

I've always hated using on screen keyboards. That is until swype came along. Its accuracy and speed are pretty awesome.

Does anyone know of an app that will switch the default keyboard automatically from swype to the android keyboard whenever I am connected on bluetooth? The one thing I like about the android KB is it has the microphone icon and I can use voice to enter searches, text messages, etc. But when I am not in my car, I much prefer the swype KB. Perhaps there is a plugin for Locale that can do this???
Just an FYI for anyone wondering. I was able to install Swype 3 Beta, despite the indication not to.
On their website it indicates that you should not install on any devices that had Swype pre installed.
I had no problems after uninstalling Swype via Titanium and proceeding with their inStall process

Any benefit for Swype 3 over what we have on our Epics right now?
Ummmm, not necessarily, it handles things just a bit smoother though, I've been digging swype as of lately because I'm on EE03 so the kb lag throws me off quite a bit, but other than that, not too much of a gain, not too much added to the options menus.

Hmmm well thank you. One thing I'd like is the ability to tap and still have autocorrect... like FlexT9, but FlexT9 won't let you Swype for the ! and ? which REALLY bothers me.

You might try SlideIT keyboard. Available on the Market for almost a year and works very much like "Swype" - in fact, I prefer SlideIT, which seems to accommodate for the eccentricities of my texting technique better than Swype... http://www.mobiletextinput.com/Download/

it has this now... kinda like the gb keyboard
I just tried downloading it from an external source (because the Swype beta registration email would not send, no matter how many times I requested a new one) and upon installation, I was bombarded with a never ending barrage of Force Close missiles until I went into System App Remover and killed it and restored my previously uninstalled but backed up stock Swype..

I've used that, but I don't like it as well because it's built-in dictionary is not as good so when you swipe on their app, the right word doesn't always come up.
Edit: Swype 3 is pre-installed on the EF02 GB Leak rom.
Not only I t a beta its higher than the beta ef02s swype is 3.4

Hi guys, great forum with some great tips.
Just got my xperia play and love it to bits.
Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but I find the keyboard very inaccurate and slow to respond.
When I compare it to my previous Iphone and HTC desire it seems poor.
Any suggestions for tweeking or any options for downloading another keyboard.
Thanks in advance
Chris
Swype
Takes a bit of getting used to swyping but you can also just use it normally to type and its much more accurate than the stock keyboard
im having the same issues , i tried gingerbread keyboard lite which was much more accurate but i was a constant running process in the backgroung using around 30mb , i wish there was a way to edit the stock xperia play keyboard i.e button size height and load a custom user dictionary, yes there are other keyboards like smart, better or swype but really sony should update / fix the stock one.
anyone know if once youve installed a 3rd party keyboard can you safely remove the stock one if rooted and not encounter any problems ?.......
SwiftKey is better to use then the stock keyboard. It just takes a bit of time to get use to.

I personally hate the htc keyboard..I always used alternate keyboards when I had my HTC.
I use swiftkey, while a tad too busy for my taste, it works damn well once you set it up to your liking. The arrow keys make me not miss my trackpad, and the numberpad-style number page is awesome.
I started using one of the Iphone keyboards.
Find it much better though still not as good as my Iphone.

yesss... swype is the best.. just installed it yesterday. very accurate and its free..
Please make sure you post why you use it and what you think about it.
I've been using swift key for two months and it is extremely accurate and fast. Two says ago i've switched to Swype and now i'm addicted to typing in this forum.
Swype is really fun to use and also very accurate.although no matter which way you look at it,I don't think tracing with one finger can be faster then typing with two thumbs unless you are not familiar with the keyboard..

if Play had better touch screen (say 10fingers,or like blackberry) SwiftKeyX would be GODMODE
i use SwiftkeyX
But with the very weak XPlays screen its not upto its full effect.
It's already God mode...or corrects you're words even if you miss the keys, so it's ultra fast when inputting something.

I have been using Swype for the past few weeks and I got to say that its the best in my opinion, and once you get used to it is when you see the difference in speed + accuracy compared to touch keyboards.
The only thing it lacks for me is the support for arabic keyboard
Though my first choice was swype, but now I prefer Hacker's keyboard because it provides all the possible keys which are normally present on a generic computer keyboard in landscape mode. Prevents hassle to search through alternate keys to find special characters. And obviously it provides suggestions, corrections and many more features.

Definitely be careful about that. I ruined my Droid's digitizer from either sweat or a random raindrop. The far left side of the screen is completely unresponsive to touch, from the soft search key all the way up.
I guess I'm the only one here using Gingerbread Keyboard. Gets the job done, accurate word predictions.
Not only one, me too uses original GB keyboard, but I would use HTC ime, but it FC once its installed, so uninstall ...
Anyone using T9 Trace? I've been trying to install it using files from other phone roms. At the moment it seems to be installed, but after selecting the keyboard in "input method", bringing up the keyboard will force close it

Couple of tips.
- Don't like the Market spewing new apps on your home screen? Just disable it in the settings.
- The persistant search bar can be disabled in Trebuchet's settings.
- Nova Launcher is an alternate to Trebuchet. I'm using it. It has a couple of useful features, like grid size. You can also disable widgets in the drawer, and get your standard long-press menu back. I highly recommend doing this if you use Beautiful Widgets, as that will spam up your widget drawer. Use AppWidgetPicker 2.0 pushed to /system/app to take care of this.
- Want your 4G toggle? There's a widget for it. It'll show up in the quick panel later.
Unfortunately, the voice actions are not available as of yet. Voice Search can be downloaded from the Market, but the speech-to-text as demonstrated on the GNexus is nowhere to be seen. It's an upstream issue.

I haven't explored VVM yet, but will post when I've got something. EDIT: As of right now, VVM is just plain not happening. I switched to Google Voice, which works well at the moment.
I love it. It doesn't feel like an alpha. The only feature I hate is that the cancel and ok buttons have switched so the cancel button is now on the left side and ok is on the right side. I keep cancelling when I think I'm pressing ok because I'm used to the other way.
Not that I won't get used to it.
I think the whole launch was beautifully executed, the only thing keeping me from staying on CM9 at the moment is that I cant restore the data from my apps.
The soft keyboard is a pain and I can't figure out how to set a static IP for wifi. Battery percentage doesn't work. I like how the LED notifications are fixed and how haptic feedback is back and working way better. The ROM overall is very fast. I backed up all my apps and contacts/SMS with mybackup pro and everything works perfect! Has anybody figured out how to get visual voicemail working?

Can we get swype to work (does it work now? Why haven't I tried before asking this question smh) ?
i have been running it for an hour and I like it so far but It can't be daily driver at the moment..
Most of my favorite games don't work or freeze (my biggest complaint)
asphalt 6 crashes
blood and glory doesnt work
deadspace doesnt work well due to the multi touch issue
street fighter IV crashes
few lags, but the rom is really smooth
camera recording issue (already noted by cm) and few minor bugs (like showing battery percentage in status bar doesn't show) and a few fc's here and there..
I haven't used the GPS for a while but it fine so far.
The CM team is amazing for the awesome rom (cm7 as well) and I am loving it so far...i am definitely donating
I think this rom is more a beta because it only has a few quirks to work out imo
