Try SPB back up. Its a trail but you will only need it once every time you do a flash. You can use it to make complete system restore
thanks fer the info! but will the backup work if i upgrade from build 21XXX to 23XXX?

Yes there is a special mode for system upgrades. Just give it a try sometime. The program is as good as it gets

It depends on what you are trying to backup - for PIM data, emails, text messages and documents it works fine even with ROM upgrades.
But if I use it for system data, I have to be really careful - sometimes certain registry settings really mess up Sense and programs... also, let's say you install software (e.g. Google Maps) because your earlier ROM didn't include it; but if it is cooked in your new ROM then it isn't useful to restore it from the backup.
So what I rather suggest is you figure out how to backup data/settings from each application and restore it after flashing (e.g. for Cookie Home Tab, the editor has a way to export the settings; some applications create a file to save the data, etc.). You will need a good registry editor (pref. PC based) to do this though

for example from 1.52 to 1.56 rom..
will the rom upgrade option really preserve everything FLAWLESSLY ? and still not mess up the upgrade?
anyone tried? thanks!!
anyone please?
I tried it and it worked but with disabled overwrite system files function
so the new rom works and your programs? any failed?

not all, but this are little things to do again, more important for me was that i didnt need to reinstall all programs.
Problem is that on cooked ROMs always some system files are updated or replaced by better performing ones. If you restore your old files there is always a risk overwriting the newer files. It is recommended therefore to only back up personal data, and re-install programs used. You decide.

i second this. even if your new rom runs after restoring your backup you have lost your registry data or overwritten newer system files.
so it is recommened to restore only your personal data an reinstall all those applications you want to use.
when you like to flash several roms to test your favourite one you should think about using sashimi. it´s a tool to autoconfigure your system after flashing.

I've tried this and it causes problems with new roms and softwares operation. If your restoring just restore PIM Backup i.e. emails, contacts etc and don't restore software, apps, registry settings.
In effect your puttings a better rom on with new registry settings when you upgrade from 1.52 to 1.56. But if your restore registry settings from 1.52 your overwriting these newer files which corrupts new rom

Exactly you don't override these. You just backup & restore PIM info, emails and possible some documents.
Leave System data unticked unless you know what your doing in the registry & databases
I would use a custom backup and just check the first 2 options PIM & email if your restoring betweening 2 different rom versions as you stated
arrghhh so this is not for me.. i wanted a solution in between upgrades.. i dont want to reinstall apps!
Don't get Lazy!
I think it would be unwise to take this sort of "Lazy" option for all the reasons mentioned previously. I have a stack of programs on mine and yet it only takes an hour or so to install these programs and then perhaps a day or 2 to setup and optimise the settings. Each of these programs may associate itself in a totally different manner from one ROM to the next....in short:
LAZY option: risky, might glitch up your operating systems
Re-install option: gives you the chance to setup and optimise to the new ROM
....know where I always start.....

Hello, i have HTC Topaz and as the new official HTC ROM WWE 6.5 is available i want to upgrate my htc rom wm6.1 to WWE 6.5.
But when i will install this new rom all my data, program will delete in my phone.
So re-installing all programs, choose settings ... is very boring to do! That is why i want to know if i will be able to use SPB Backup (2.0.2) to recover programs, settings, and data after the upgrade.
Or if can't use SPB Backup, please give me if it is possible an other solution.
Thanks
Restoring an old configuration on a different ROM from which it was created will hardly work correctly, it is not recommended to do that. The best you can do is use PIM backup to at least restore contacts, appointments, sms, mail..
PIM Backup is just an example, any othe commercial Backup software will do the job but ONLY if you choose to make a partial backup of your personal information, NOT the system configuration.
You can also try MyPhone (http://myphone.microsoft.com/) for all your Contacts, SMS, Task, Emails and Data etc...
Thanks.

Doesn't solve the problem: you cannot restore a WM6.1 configuration on a WM6.5 ROM, data will be lost on the way. There could be apps or tweaks working in WM6.1 that are incompatible with WM6.5, is Myphone going to "repair" them??
Thanks for all, your solutions (PIM backup, my phone) allow me to backup contacts, appointments, sms, mail...
But for programs i should to re-install alls or there is any solutions?
If there is no issues, can i use the .cab of WM6.1 for WM6.5?
In particular, for IGO and Tomtom, are they working with WM6.5?
I suggest to reinstall the programs. For compatibility issues, just try it by yourself! Install every single app and see if it works..or read the forum..I think that there shouldn't be any problem with the navigators you mentioned.

This is basically true, but Spb Backup 2 has a quite particular feature: you can restore your system even on a different device and (!) on the same device after you upgraded your ROM. I tried it and it worked. Extremely useful!

I'm out, I'm too happy with my Topaz config at the moment to make experiments. Besides, SPB backup doesn't work with my rom/device, I use Sprite.
However, if WM 6.5 does not like me, is it possible to come back with WM6.1 (HTC Official ROM FR of 21 july 2009)? and how to do (is a hardspl is needed as I downgrade)? Does the device will still guarantee?
Thank you

The question if offtopic here, but the answer is YES. If you downgrade to an official original 6.1 ROM for your phone you won't need HSPL. For warranty reasons, you should relock your phone by removing HSPL. Read carefully the sticky threads (that's what they made for )
Hi all,
I know this might be a bit silly, but i've loads of apps installed and i want to avoid having to reinstall all of them.
Is it possible to install a new ROM while keeping all your data and apps? If so is it advisable?
Cheers
Hi. U can use SPB Backup and do a full backup which will backup everything including phone settings preferences. Its great and i use it all the time.

In my experience this method is not fool proof and does bring the possibility of registry and application association problems.
So do bear this in mind if you start to experience unexpected results.

I use Silent_UC which re-installs/updates the newly flashed rom in several ways, which helps a lot. PIMBackup for contacts/text messages. CHTEditor for manilla links.
But is there one thing that does it all safely, the answer is no.

I agree to a certain extent.Issues,if any, would be with certain tweaks such as manila/sense that do not work with all roms. It really is ROM dependant i guess. To tackle this issue in the past, what i did/do,is install certain tweaks or apps that are compatible with all ROMS and manila versions(after a fresh flash/reset)& do a full backup. This backup i like to call "basics". This includes phone settings aswell ie: Preferred ringtones, backlight settings etc. I then restore this backup each time i flash another rom,and its worked perfect for me so far. I then install other apps if want. Got to be honest, since i flash different roms often,i tend not to install alot of apps, only the ones i use regularly such as memmaid, resco explorer and the likes.
Sorry to go all long mate forgive me! just trying to explain my experience
Thank you all for your replies. I'll look into the back programs. Can't believe i didn't think of that!
Cheers!
Try Sashimi. A pretty nifty tool I found through the formums. It seems like a pretty complex tool, but seems like people who flash a lot, love it for keeping their apps intact after flashing.
Hey all,

Backing up and restoring anything other than PIM details across a different ROM flash its asking for trouble and its not recommended.
Use Myphone and all sync info will be to hand when needed.
Reinstall as many of your apps as possible to phone mem this will keep the phone running as sweet as possible.
Or 'PIM Backup' from DotFred
I use this one

restoring a complete system (ALL data) is fine even after flashing a different rom. When using SPB backup you just have to make sure that you run the restore in "ROM upgrade mode". SPB Backup prompts you to do this automatically when it detects that the rom running isnt the same as the one the backup was created with.

Sorry to disagree, but, Ive seen too many problems happen by doing this. Never seen any by not doing it!!!!!!!!
However, it's all advice and can be taken or not as the reader sees fit.
thanks for the advice guys, one thing, when installing spb backup does it make a difference where i install it? ie device or storage card?

Doesnt make much difference... i always install all of my apps onto the storage card as it saves re-installing them after a hard reset or if you have a new device.
The only items i install to main memory are the ones that are integral to the system ie/ task managers, manila mods etc
I think the best way for a complete backup is sashimi application and its plugin makisu
sashimi is not very simple but, once you've configured it how you want, you can be sure you'll have the same apps, same tweaks, same registry improvements, same email settings, same wifi settings and so on.
So you can change rom whenever you want, without waste time to re-configure and re-install and so on.
sashimi can do also a backup of your personal informations, but for these I recommend PPC-PIMBackup (the easyest and simply the best for these kind of stuff)
There is also a dedicated forum
Give it a try, I use it with satisfaction

Hi,
Got a question. I am installing and playing around with different ROM's. I am getting tired of setting my Vibrate and ring, my ring tone, Active Sync email settings, bookmarks you know all the ones you have to reset after you flash etc...
If I use PIMbackup will that do it for me? after I flash a different ROM or is there another way?
Thanks

PIMBackup won't. I think SPB Backup has a ROM Upgrade feature, but I don't think even this will work where you switch ROMs because of the different OS builds etc...

Yes I can confirm...SPB Backup works great with the same ROM.
If I had a Custom ROM and all the applications installed and it works great...I made a backup. Then I can play around with a different ROM. Can go back if
I want the previous.
WORKS great !

To a certain extent though. Sometimes, some mods that u install on a partiqular rom may not work with another rom. These would usually be something relating to manila/sense. Also,as mentioned above, it may give issues with different windows build. For instance, mods done on a windows 6.5rom may not work with a 6.5.x rom. But i guess its all about experimenting.
systems settings(ringtones, notifications) remain most of the times though!
i think this might sound oldskool but its the only way it will work as u wish.
1- backup all your pim data (use any backup software)
2- export all registry (HKCR,HKCU,HKLM) when ur device is fully configured as u like.
3- hard-reset (take out ur sdcard if u hv UC) : export all fresh registry again.
4- compare all reg keys & take note on differents > create a .reg file.
5- create a cab from reg key created on step 4.
6- include the cab created from step 5 in UC list, then hard reset again or reinstall all cabs manually.
but a backup software with upgrade/update feature is recommended tho.
Have a look at some software called Sashimi, or better still, put a search in Youtube and watch the tutorial, its a brilliant piece of software plus its free. I haven't completely got to grips with it, but so far i have managed to get it to install cabs to a certain directory, import customised reg's, set up my push mail, pop mail etc and import files including ring tones to a certain directory all with the click of a button. (obviously you have to set it all up first) . it will do more but i have not got that far yet. When you flash ROMS as often as i do, its a massive time saver, its definitely worth a look.
