Android 2.2 - Hero, G2 Touch General

http://www.gsmarena.com/android_22_froyo_to_support_automatic_application_updates-news-1606.php

Apprently 2.2 will bo shown off at the end of next month, so not too long to wait.
Think this needs to be in general forum though...

Wait for the Google I/O. The SDK will be released shortly.

and then htc will announce that the hero will skip 2.1 to go straight to 2.2. and they will say the update will come "in 2H2010"...

What do you care?
The only thing of interest is compatible drivers, which we get from leaks.
Other than that, newer frameworks always get ported, so it's never a problem to get a working rom with the newest framework.
What difference would it have made if HTC would've released an official 2.1 GSM ROM?
None. We took the drivers (and htc-related framework, for ppl cooking SenseUI) from the CDMA and Espresso/MyTouch leaks and integrated them into our own (or ported) builds.
Does it work? Just look at the staggering amount of 2.1 ROM threads.
Which is why I can't really understand ppl making a fuss about HTC not releasing an official update...

There's a problem, it seems 2.2 will be based on the kernel 2.6.32 while 2.1 on the kernel 2.6.29.

1.6/2.0/2.1 with the kernel that HTC just released?

I was wondering why its been so quite after HTC released the new kernel for the Sprint Hero, I thought that was the missing link that was needed for complete 1.6/2.0/2.1 roms?
It hasn't been quiet.
Also the kernel that HTC released needs to be ported to 2.6.29 to fully work with 1.6+.
All this info is on the forum & easily obtainable.

I just thought we would see some 1.6/2.0/2.1 releases now that the kernel was released, that's all
There's been 1.6+ releases for a while...
Let me elaborate a little here:
This kernel that was released is not a magic bullet, it allows us to see what code needs to be changed to get the correct Kernel to run these newer versions. It also lets us make any performance changes we can find.
All of the changes need to be put into the current kernel source, making it a .29 or whatever we need.
It has been fairly quite, we aren't seeing tons of Roms being thrown out to the market, thankfully. Our devs are taking all the time they need to make sure everything works and is stable. We should see some big stuff happen in the next week or so.

Good to know, I guess I'm like a kid in the candy store, thanks for educating me on the kernel process.
Modaco's 2.2 has the customized kernel in it now.. read the front page of the Hero forum for the link..
its very nice..

Yea that's what I'm rocking right now, I'm just impatient for a fully funcional newer OS

Is it possible to flash android 2.0 on Hero?

Can i do this great thing?
1. Try using the search function on this forum
or
2. Wait a couple of weeks and HTC will provide a 2.1 update for you.
or
3. Wait for like... forever HTC's so slow on this, but would recommend option 2 tho, the 2.1 release thats out isn't that stable...
If you get the official HTC one do they just post it on their website and you download it, or what?

Yes. And they have ALWAYS stated that they will do that.
You will notice in this link that there are no available 2.0 ROMs for the Hero... However there are 1.5, 1.6, and 2.1.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=GSM Hero ROMs
Remember, if you install the Official HTC 2.1 ROM (when it is eventually released) using the RUU, you won't have Root access on your Hero anymore, I'd just wait till someone posts an 'unpacked' version on here.

Roll up Roll up, Taking Bets! Google or Cyanogen!

Two choices, A or B, slap your vote below
A: Froyo's true release ROM will be better than Cyanogen's godmix based off the pre release ROM

uhh, A?
since this pre-release is probably a RC, i would say cyan would be 'better'
A I guess
How about putting up a poll...

agreed, might stick with stock froyo for a while so i can get excited again when i slap cyan on there.
need something to keep my attention for the next 6 months

Agree with this
He isnt working on a dump, wont start working on a 2.2 rom till they drop to aosp which makes this pretty much a non starter. However whenever he does get rolling it will be epic. Stock froyo will weep with embaressment. Some people will still not flash because they are worried that rooting will cause global warming.
this is a moot post since cyanogen only bases his roms off aosp, not a another rom.
Well to be accurate or technical I'd say neither cause being that this is a pre-release test ROM I doubt that Google will release the source code which Cyan uses to make his ROMs so there will be no CM ROM based off the pre-release.
Now if you ask if Cyan's ROM made after and off of the official Froyo release's source code is out then I will definitely say Cyan's will run circles around the official.
This poll doen't make any 'sense'...too early for assumptions
cyanogen....not a hard choice

This..............
1 is always less than 1+1+1+1... (i.e. CM builds are based on the official release, with lots of fixes and enhansements)
I believe the final froyo will be almost the same as this "test" release.

[Q] Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Beta Rom

I stumbled upon an article linking to a download to the Gingerbread "beta" for Evo and I'm wondering:
What would happen to my current roms if I actually flashed the update? (using CM 6 and Fresh 3.4.0.1)
Is there potential to completely brick the phone to the point I won't even be able to get into the recovery to get back to a functional rom?
Its not beta. More like a "dev only" or alpha. Its in the dev forum. It wont brick your phone but It could give you some headaches if your new at flashing roms.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
it is very choppy on my phone, like 5fps choppy.
but text and web browsing worked, along with the market.
however couldn't check gmail, id click on the email and it'd open than go back to the menu right away
Is the flashing process any different than simply selecting the .zip file from clockwork, or do I need to name it update or PC36IMG?
or would it be similar to the headaches received from not wiping the data and cache to load CM 6.1 "stable"?
What exactly are you hoping to accomplish any way? The rom is purely in developmental stages right now and should in no way be used as your primary rom. It's literally going to suck. Performance is NOT there right now. Given the questions you're asking in this thread it's highly unlikely you're going to be loading this rom and helping to improve it by developing it further...
a 2.3 based rom for the Evo intended for the "end user" is likely not going to be ready for you until the source is released for 2.3.
I just saw this posted, not sure if it could be of any help to those that "were" working on the sdk port. I say were because the thread was just closed.

You are mistaken at what that rom is. It is a froyo rom for the Droid X with the gingerbread keyboard and theme.
The numbering convention for the Droid X firmwares just happen to be at 2.3.x right now which is probably confusing you. If you actually go the thread dedicated to that rom you will see: http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/d...x-1-3-0-droid-x-running-running-fast-can.html

What was/is mis-leading is they are calling it "unofficial Gingerbread port" when they should have called it a rom with a ported theme & keyboard. They never mentioned the version # so I wasn't looking at that. Thanks for the clarification. ... Android Central>

Overclocking the 1.72 OTA

Hey guys,what's up?
So,I guess I am not the only one who's sick of htc delaying the release of the source code for their latest OTAs.Especially those of us who have owned a Hero or a Desire(I for one had both ) will know what I'm talking about.
So,there I was at the Desire Z forums and saw the original thread for the overclocking module we were using with 1.32,before we had permanent root and CWM.As coolbho3000 states here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813681,
If there's ever an OTA or if you flash a custom kernel, you'll need a recompiled version of the kernel module, and with different addresses. Any kernel dev can easily do this using the documentation below.
To use it on another device (such as an HTC Desire Z, if it runs a different kernel, or even an HTC Desire HD or 8x55 myTouch) running a different kernel, you must re-compile the kernel module from source and refer to the instructions here to modify it (or the installation process) accordingly: http://github.com/coolbho3k/vision_o.../master/README

So I think that with some work we can do it.Seeing the dual core phones coming out,1GHz seems kinda slow, doesn't it?
If anyone's interested please let me know!

Odd's are that the pulled 1.72 updates source code will never be released... If you really want it, contact the FSF to put some pressure on HTC to release it.

i think HTC will have to release it, even though it was pulled, the fact it was even released and people may be using it means, HTC are breaking the GPL by not releasing it
Someone on leedroid thread has managed to overclock the stock kernel
E=Mc2
Well, did we have the source for the 1.32 kernel then?I dunno...
But anyway, even so,until HTC does something for us,we should have something to keep us occupied with!

BTW, why did they pull it?
i wonder why i am running a 1.32 rom, shame most dev are writing 1.72 roms
