Launcher process using 30% CPU at all times - Nexus One General

Ok, someone who knows android better than me, please help me out.. Yesterday I got a CPU usage widget, and I was observing my CPU usage for about a minute.. I saw it change as I flicked through screens, but when I stopped - CPU dropped to 1-2% and CPU clock automatically dropped to 200-something.
Today, after a reboot, it's always at 10-15% CPU, running at 998MHz all the time. Launching a CPU usage app, I see that Launcher is constantly at 20-40% CPU usage, next one being Android System at 5%.
Is launcher the app drawer? Or the screens? And why is it taking up so much CPU at all times? I can tell it greatly affects my battery today, in comparison to yesterday, when it was way lower.
Thanks!

The Launcher process is the process that shows when you touch the Home button. By default it includes 5 home screens and the application drawer.
My best guess would be that the widget you added is using the CPU. Try removing the widget and reboot to see if Launcher is still high on the CPU usage list.

Bah, why didn't I think of that. Thanks, I'll try that out.
Update: Nope, it seems the CPU meter app isn't part of the Launcher process. After wipe, launcher doesn't even show in the list of processes anymore. Obviously, I use the screens and the app drawer, but Launcher isn't running.
Wondering what the hell that was.

Sense weather problem

Hey all, so I've been tweaking my settings for a better battery life. Atm I'm going two days with heavy, heavy use and great battery life. Although I've noticed my weather app has stopped showing up on my home screen clock. I have tried setting it to update automatically and every 3 hours but when I go back into settings its unchecked. I would really like to have the weather showing in the clock widget. Can anyone help me out?

ZTE Blade Optimisation Guide

I have had the ZTE Blade for about a month now and I have noticed that sometimes it can become a bit slow and laggy but with the use of some free apps from the market I was able to help speed up the Blade's performance without much effort.
Advanced Task Killer
Launch the app > Press "menu" button > Go to settings > Change "Auto Kill Level" to "Safe" also change "Auto Kill Frequency to "When screen off"
AutoStart Killer
Disable all apps you don't need to start up when the phone boots
Launcher Pro
Make sure Launcher Pro is the default launcher. I recommend that you only have 3 homescreens with minimal use of widgets. i have found that keeping the default settings improves performance.
Zeam
I found that LauncherPro and Zeam are similar in performance but they are both great launcher replacements.
Titanium Backup
Only needed if you are using a stock rom or one with a lot of apps you don't use or want. Remove any Orange or ZTE apps you don't use to free up space on the phone's internal memory.
Cheers for the info
ive been using TB to remove apps or old apps works well and seems to speed things up
ive also been using cache cleaner and rebooting (which i hope helps keep things running a little better)
Cheers

Isnt Advanced Task Killer supposed to be evil?

You don't ever need a autokiller. Use auto-starts, and don't install crap apps!

If you want to change home launcher in order to optimize performance, Zeam is the best choice. It has a very low footprint (and a very handy home screen, btw.).
There's no way a task killer is going anywhere near my phone......
Agreed - Zeam seems to be a bit smoother than launcher pro on the stock rom. On 2.2 theres very little difference between them. Personally i prefer ADW - although pretty much the only thing it has over Launcher Pro is the ability to set three columns instead of four in the app drawer. (sad i know)
The best optimization is to get 2.2 on there
I've not tried out zeam yet, but running Launcher pro on 2.2, with memory settings set to 10, and caching enabled, I find it hard to believe that much it going to beat it, mine is liquid smooth on the home screen.
Mike
I've just tried out Zeam, and actually I was suprised at how smooth it is, not quite a smooth going into the appdraw, but really quite good
Mike
Wait till Launcher Pro get its rewrite, then we will see who is smoother
You shouldn't use an auto task killer. Autostarts is a better bet to prevent stuff you don't want starting the first place. And Watchdog if the reason you're wanting to kill stuff is that they're going wrong.
Zeam is faster than LauncherPro imo. It's just a shame it doesn't have the option to hide apps in the app drawer.
faster blade
use adw launcher it is the best homescreen by miles, once you get used to it all others will seem pointless, stick to a minimal amount of widgets and a max of 3 screens.
a good task manager I've found is task panel x. it gives you a widget for your homescreen with a kill all button and has ignore and autokill options to keep things running smoothly
avoid live wallpapers like the plague, try using something like wallswitch instead to auto change your wallpapers. there are loads of apps to get nice wallpapers and most of them look miles better than the gimmicky live wallpapers anyway.
I have spent hours trying out every widget and app out there and can highly recommend the following...
My current widgets
countdown timer widget,
mort player music widget,
sticky pad pro widget (totally customizable and great for shopping lists)
guage battery widget
jorte calander
wifi manager
task panel
widgetsoid
digital clock widget
favourite apps
angry birds
system panel light (best looking task manager by far)
app brain (better than the market)
chrome to phone
daily horoscope
ezpdf reader (has night mode)
laputa (excellent free ebook reader)
myplayer (old version still works)
Slideit keyboard (like swype but much better)
uk tv droid (excellent tv guide with reminders)
Uloops studio (THIS ROCKS, BEST ANDROID APP EVER)
wall switch
if anybody knows of any better alternatives to these I would love to hear about them.
what to kill though
hi,
I have had my blade for about a month now, and it is my first Android.
this thread is just what I am needing right now to try and optimize it
and get better battery life for use on my golf course with Freecaddie.
currently I am using 2 apps: Advanced Task Killer (the little green man icon) and 'Quick Settings'
and have set phone to 2G, with Auto sync and Background Data disabled.
I fancy trying Titanium Backup and Autostart Killer as mentioned earlier
but have not the faintest idea as to what Apps to backup, nor which to Autokill.
I actually only need my Blade for basic phone usage, as a Satnav, and for Golfing.
if anyone can advise me what to 'kill' I would be very greatful.
a great forum this, and a Happy New Year to all.
Kevin
I have now installed Autostart Killer and quite like it,
but Titanium Backup seems to be for rooted phones only and mine is not rooted.
is there a similar app to Titanium Backup for non rooted phones ?
thanks,
Kevin
Yeh, I'm kind of in a dilema whether to use advanced task killer or not..
can anyone point me in the right direction?

Add to whitelist anything you want to keep open it doesn't display core processes anyway so can't go wrong.
There's an ilogic in the logic as far as android is concerned apparently there is no need for taskillers due to androids own task manager, happen to disagree as any process increases battery also many programs use net in background to which again uses battery, the argument you will find is in the clock we use to clear "doesn't need to be done every minute" also another app worth getting if rooted is Droid wall a firewall very handy to stop program communications..

Launchers
I wholeheartedly agree with 'Twistedvegan' that the ADW Launcher is the best.
amongst it's many good points are the ability to change the 3 main launcher icons,
and to customomize what you add to each screen. (eg: I have just icons with no text for my main apps)
and I have tried all the most popular launchers

Annoying! Vibrant screen seems to load all icons when coming out of other application

This just recently started happening and its so fkin annoying, for some reason when I come out of other applications by pressing home button the screen comes up black with only my wallpaper and seems to load all icons which takes 6-7 seconds. Anyone else experiencing this?
This always happens when I come out of the music player and web browser other applications too but these 2 are confirmed.
What launcher are you using? It might be caused by the launcher being terminated by the system and then having to launch "on demand" again (hence the delay). You might check to see if the launcher has a option to "keep in memory" or some such. I have seen this before on other phones and it was the launcher.
^ is correct. Odd that this is happening though. Do you have a ton going on? Find the feature to keep in memory as suggested. I use ADW EX and this has never happened. If I switch back and forth between launchers it will (obviously).
Are you using a task killer that is killing your launcher? I agreed with the above, it sounds like a laucher problem
Use the back button to exit out of apps when you are done. You are probably running out of memory from opening too many things and the system is killing the launcher.

It sounds like something is killing the launcher. Make sure that you aren't using to much RAM, because the system will kill your launcher if you don't have enough RAM for what your doing.

Launcherpro redraw fix

I found this fix on a another forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856385
This problem was driving me nuts so I tried it on my Epic and it's worked great so far. Give it a try if you're having similar issues with Launcherpro or other memory intensive launcher like ADW. You'll be glad you did!
Thanks for the tip!

Didn't seem to do anything for me. Though this issue was really apparent in ef02. Back on ec05, not so much. Anywho TE didn't give me any confirmation. So I don't even know if it worked.

When TE doesn't give you an error message after hitting enter, its usually a good thing I actually did not have the issues w/ redrawing of the homes screen on EF02, but the EXPERIMENTAL 3D App Drawer does give me an issues on GB, were it doesn't scroll properly, it kinda jumps from the top of the drawer to the bottom, not allowing one to select any apps in b/w. I was hoping for this to fix that issue, but it did not....thanks anyways!
There are some additional tips on this forum like setting memory usage and home screen caches to light. Also, disabling auto rotation helps a lot.
http://www.launcherpro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2652&hilit=Redraw
I attached a picture of my settings. I also have 3D drawer enabled, droid hack disabled, auto rotate off, memory usage preset and home screen cache type to light. I have five 6 column, 7 row homescreens loaded with widgets and shortcuts, and static wallpaper. I have easily 150+ apps on my phone. It used to redraw 50-70% of the time when exiting an app, now it's smooth as butter. It's totally changed my phone experience for the better.
I am on an EC05 rom.

On EC05 I actually didn't have any issues at all, but its on EF02 that Im having the 3D issues. I duplicated your settings but it seems to be an issue w/ GB cuz its still no good...thanks anyways, again lol
I'm confused about the memory usage settings and which settings are best. Wouldn't higher memory usage yield better results?

This seemed to work for GoLauncher as well, it is nice not to have to wait 5 seconds for the launcher to reload every time I browse the web with multiple tabs or play a game for a while.
I'm not sure if it is my imagination but I think my battery life has gotten worse.. I will give it some more time to make sure.
I had this problem and my phone constantly vibrating like something was Force Closing, on stock Launcher. Before I rooted I went to Samsung recovery, and cleared all caches 5 times. And everything was fine, even when I redownloaded LauncherPro using LauncherPro widgets like friend feeds, and calander. Youtube widget and sence analog clock.

Even Go sometimes has this issue. The problem is the memory management is killing the background cache. The only real fix I found was to not have as many constant apps running in the background.
thanks for the fixes.
People still use Launcher Pro?
Go Launcher EX surpasses it in every way and its free,Zeam launcher isnt bad eather but not as rich on featureas and themes.

Agreed, the primary reason I use it is for the app drawer folders, makes it much easier to organize/find apps.
The only problem with Go Launcher (other than the previous reloading issue) is with the car dock, it restarts every time it is plugged/unplugged from the dock.
Agree with using Go Launcher EX as well. I jumped from LauncherPro too and never looked back. The devs of Go Launcher EX are constantly updating it and squeezing out the bugs.

Homescreen shuttering for few seconds after waking up from deep sleep

Hi Guys
Here's my setup:
1) Running the Poland firmware , L1B
2) Have installed the 3rd party launcher fix
3) Nova Launcher
4) 5 home screens, with moderate amount of Widgets and shortcut.
Includes PowerAmp widget, HD widget, Flipboard widget, Simple Calendar widget.
Problem:
Everytime I wake my phone up fro deep sleep, and unlock to home screen. Then if I swipe left or right, the transition isn't smooth. There will be a bit shuttering and jittering.
After a few seconds it's back to it's silky smooth self.
I've tried it by removing all the shortcuts and widgets, yet the result is same.
Anyone else facing the same issue?
Any Fix?
Bump :silly:
