I am about to get a Vega (now £200 in the UK). Can anyone tell me what I should do after I unbox it?
Is it really that bad out of the box?
Are there customisations you can do with the stock ROM or is burning a new ROM really essential?
Thanks in advance.
in one word "YES" , it is really that bad out of the box.
A full rom is not required to get the basics out of your vega. You can try my rom add-on (available in the development section) which just adds the basics like market etc. It is very easy to install. Then ditch the awful launcher by installing launcher pro or alike. Then button savior for me is a must, by adding the missing home button as a on screen button.
Adding things like kernels is great if you need the extra features, such as usb switching.
There are a few choices of full rom, the most popular at the moment appears to be from corvus, who is doing great work on are vegas.
Hopefully honeycomb will be with us soon, when this happens a rom flash will be a must
Edit: I notice you have purchased the £200 vega that has v1.08 firmware, i would recommend updating to v1.09. It adds flash as well as full screen notifications and also includes updated graphic drivers. Which improve the "artifact" problem

I agree with ganjaman, ive just spent the last few weeks trying things with my vega.
I would suggest reading the modaco and xda forums thoroughly Before trying to flash anything. Learn from the devs. Rooting, and nandroid backups is a good place to start.
Good luck!
honestly its bad out the box.
But custom roms are great on it and brings it to life
i think the modoco rom is the best atm although cm7 is on the ways and looking very promising
+1 , yep bad out of the box.
I think the first thing most people would do is to load this on. From there you have the Market and if you want to do more then you also can root and run up Rom Manager.
Also good if you know how to use nvflash just in case.
I've had my Vega for a week now, so I thought I would answer my own questions.

Nothing. Have a play. You can use it for surfing, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Don't begin by doing anything drastic liking burning a new ROM. At least not right away. And using the supplied device, at least for a while, will let you know what you are leaving behind if you do decide to upgrade.
Is it really that bad out of the box?
No. It's fine out of the box. That's why Advent sells it this way. You can do most things anyone would want to do, without installing anything extra.
Are there customisations you can do with the stock ROM or is burning a new ROM really essential?
Yes, you can do a few simple things to improve the supplied device. You can install Android apps on the device -- if you can get a hold on the APK file (essentially, the program file). The device comes with a file manager so it's simply a case of find the APK (Google is your friend), downloading it, and running the file using the file manager. The app will then install. You can do this without installing anything extra to the device.
The next stage in upgrading the device is to install the full Android Market, which you can do without upgrading the ROM. That will give you full access to all of the Android apps. The supplied device with Market added is a pretty attractive package if you are reluctant to go further.
The best upgrade is to replace the original ("stock") ROM with a new ("custom") ROM. This will give you many extra features (including the full Market experience) and is very worthwhile. But you don't have to do it.
The final upgrade is to burn a custom ROM and customise the device like crazy using a launcher. These are available on the Market and can transform the whole look of the device. I replaced my stock ROM with the Modaco custom ROM and installed Launcher Pro -- and my Vega looks fantastic.
I agree with original poster, it works quite fine out of the box, and works even better if it has pov firmware, as it has a smaller statusbar and 1.10 seems abit faster and smoother.
But then ofc we all get tired of stock firmwares and start modding
hello all.
Yup couldnt agree more with above posts.
Well...... I do think it is a bit poo oob, but is useable. Its just not very slick or fun oob.
Once you add a launcher of choice it starts to get more fun.
Rgds
L
Edit: oob stands forr out of the box.
Ps i like the mirror symetry of "poo oob". Not planned, but pleases me.
Hi there guys, could someone kindly direct me to the link where I can downlaod the best working HTC Sense from SD card for my HTC HD2. I have tried to search but could not find. It seems that they all have heaps of issues and then have muliple fixs... Thank you in advance!

Hey, I'm Edd and a Flashaholic
I probably try a new ROM every week, be it NAND or SD (but generally SD as it's so simple), and while there's lots of good ones around, my money is still on the EVO Black & Blue Remix by Motoman.
Now, it's almost 10 months old and is Android 2.2 - but it's so stable, fluid, and flawless. I've tried all other 2.2, 2.3 ROMs and all the new Sense 3.0 ones, but to my knowledge, this one is still the best. Over the last 10 months I've probaly spent two months road-testing ROMs, and it's still the one I come back for every time - and it's been stable the whole of that time (about six months ago I did fresh-install it, but more out of boredom and after wondering what installing/uninstalling 150+ apps had left behind )
Anyway, certainly a worthy contender: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847631&highlight=sd+evo
(I always then go and install the free "Gingerbread keyboard" app from the Marketplace)
Also, with a combination of SetCPU, JuiceDefender, and Screebl I get ~36 hours life from it.

Thank you heaps for the tip. I tried that one, works better than others by far but it is very simplistic. I'd like something with more advanced options, you see… I saw one HD2 with Android, not sure which one it was, but it was flawless!! Just as if it was factory built, that’s the kind of thing I want…

Glad it gave you a good experience at least
As it happens, after posting on this thread, I decided to try another "oldish" ROM (basically, I don't find any of the Sense 3.0's good enough as a daily driver, and for some reason I never really liked the cartoony appearance of later pre-3.0 Sense roms).
Anyway, this is an interesting one... http://slobozincur.appspot.com/forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881937 - as it gives you landscape Sense. I'd tried it before but for some reason I like it more this time. However big battery drain at the moment.
The apps which, for me, always speed up the ROM and help with battery life are a combination of SetCPU, JuiceDefender, and Screebl (all apps in the Market. SetCPU is free to forum members, and there's both free and paid versions of the other two). If you'd like more details on any of these let me know, but otherwise there's plenty of knowledge in these Forums/on the market.
And as ever, give any ROM two days or so and a bunch of resets to "settle" down.
If anyone can recommend a decent Desire HD ROM let me know

Yes, any Android, maybe from the latest ones, that can be used on a daily bases! Any idea? Thanks in advance!
Try this Sens 3.5 Rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275119
But remind that in sens 3.0 and 3.5 ROMs there are still alot of glitches that dev. cant fix right now.
PS: And go for NAND
Actually, it can be fixed, there is a new kernel that is being developed as we speak, where the glitches are gone.
Check it out here:

+1 on the NAND-rom... you won't regret it.
try the mccm desire hd or rafdroid desire hd build.....smoothies/flawless

I am happily using DL DesireZ SD MAGLDR Android ROM v3.4 final. I know it's an oldie, but I don't see any reason to change, until (hopefully) Ice Cream Sandwich comes out on SD
Yes, I'm using an SD ROM because of space constraints on NAND, as ALL the apps do not install on SD.
You can find the thread on XDA here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881937
The chef has upgraded this ROM on this thread as you will see, but the one I'm using (v3.4) is still available for download here: http://www.multiupload.com/SL5W63ARFI

I am still waiting for fully working and reliable sense 3.0/3.5 ROM. Tested a lot of them but unfortunately there is no fast and reliable ROM available!
The most promissing one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282281 works fine after installation. But if you install some apps you realize that a lot of them do not work. Camcorder does not support normal resolutions and you will realize some uncontrolled fcs. Sense 3 is not developed and optimized for HD2 devices!!! every non HD2 user would laught at this phone when realising all this issues and instabilities.
Only sense 2.0 is working fast and reliable. This one is optimized with newest drivers (gps) and a stable kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259110
Everything is working fine. With CWR 5/260/5 you can add all deleted apps. App2sd script is also available. using it for three weeks now without reboot. Its still getting faster and smoother.

Yes and no... Sense 3 is not being developed but one can still adapt the kernel to make it work. What isn't working right now, and what is causing graphic glitches along with choppy performance is the absence of hardware acceleration. As long as the CPU has to do both graphic-rendering and software calculations, the ROM will seem laggy.
HTC HD2 is fully capable of running Sense 3 and other graphicly enhanced UIs as soon as the kernel loads the associated libraries. That kernel is acctually already in development.

Hi there, thank you for the tip!!! I downloaded the ROM you are using, it is a great built!! I love it. It is a bit simple and maybe oldish but works really well!!
I have one issue though... the calendar with Exchange Sync doesn't work, it shows an error... it syncs email, contacts but not the calendar. do you know where I can troubleshoot it? Cheers
This is now my ROM too
I have no issues with Exchange Calendar working for me... All I can suggest is double checking going to: Phone Settings | Accounts & Sync | ActiveSync | and checking that Calendar is ticked.

I have done this... Ever since I installed it I can't sync the calendar... I tried reinstalling 3 times... don't know what else I should do... thanks anyways!!
You can also try going into Settings | Applications | Manage Applications | All | Calendar Storage | And clicking "Force Stop" then "Clear Data". That solved a similar problem once for me when my Calendar wasn't refreshing. There's four other Calendar-related applications there and if the above doesn't work, you could try clearing the data with the others. Otherwise maybe search the ROM thread as it's dozens of pages long and someone elsemust surely have had this problem too.
Good luck!

Hi all,
I know everyone is working really hard on the ICS source for the S2 but from what I've experienced so far its not worth moving on from 2.3.6. I know this is all testing/dev work and things aren't going to run to smoothly but I dont seem to be able to get a stable ROM that works for all the below, at least one of them doesnt work or crashes all the time (I seem to find I'm CWM backup'ing/restoring and titanium apps all the time and restoring ROMS instead of using the phone lol):
- USB utilities - crashes when trying to use it
- GPS doesnt work to well - even with the agps patch applied
- MMS/3G signal doesnt work
- Nova launcher on most crash
- Messaging stops working from the dock - so you have to clear the data to re apply launcher settings
- some other stuff I cant think of right now
If I can put a tick in the box for all of the above I would be a happy man til then I'm sticking to 2.3.6 ROM's (Not moaning, just thought I would put it out there and see what everyone elses thoughts are) :-D

Just realized what i said...Anyway so many threads out there already regarding ICS just post in there regarding making a new thread. You only get people coming down your thread just cause you opened a new thread on a topic that is already kinda getting boring with all the crap everyday you read on here and people opening so many threads when you could just post in the ones that are already created..
thats what you get when you use a beta version. post the same in existing threads, and do read before posting another thread.
I was actually not going for.ics myself due to what I was reading... but couldn't resist anymore and have been on Darkys (Ficeto) LPB for 2 days now... I'm actually quite happy and surprised by the performance and ESP battery life... probably not.going to switch back to the bread...!

I agree. I have been trying about 5 versions of custom roms with ICS which all users would say are very good but I was very disappointed in performance, and sometimes it would freeze.
ICS.....not yet released!
Be patient now.
U guys need to do a full wipe even if the ROM says no wipe. Otherwise you will definitely get issues. I was having some before I did a full wipe. After the Wipe did a fresh install of a Custom ROM and now its awesome. Definitely can't go back to GB now

I agree, don't think I will use it till either samsung release it, or sammobile release a proper rom leak that samsung will later release.

I shouldnt do this cause my mates friends uncle will kill me but.
Ive got hold of a fully working release of ics that samsung will roll out the only reason they arnt is cause they are waiting to time it for the sgs 3 release, they want to encourage people to upgrade to that and then once thats sold well will offer this upgrade for the sgs2.
There have however been reports of phones being bricked due to a time stamp in the kernel stopping the kernel from running before a given date.
So I repeat this ROM will brick your phone
flash in odin as normal

First post ! I'm not totally new on this forum, I've been consulting them since my very first Android and Smart phone about 3 years ago when I bought the HTC Desire. I did create account back then in order to communicate with you guys, but I never got the privileges for posting so... I just kept reading.
New account made just now because I wanted to share my experience and maybe post a couple of questions (even tips, who knows) - and it does work now, which is nice ! So... Hello !!
I was an HTC protagonist and hated Samsung for their phones made of Taiwanese plastic and their Apple-like designs and commercial strategies... until my employer introduced a new Android application and provided us with new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 devices. Well - let's just say I was amazed on one hand by the speed and capabilities of my new device and disappointed on the other hand by my beloved HTC One X. It's just that - everything works better ! The only annoying bit was the keyboard, which is far less practical than the one on Sense... but that was easily set right with the installation of AI Keyboard and its Gingerbread theme.
So - my phone had just completed its very first charge after I unpacked it when I decided to root it immediately, install CMW6 recovery and flash it with Revolution HD 19.0 - which worked like a charm !
I'm very happy with this ROM ! My battery lasts clearly longer than that of my colleague's stock devices (about 48h with normal use - including a bit of gaming during number 2's, use of Wifi most of the time and Bluetooth in the car). The response is slightly faster too - for instance that app we use for work works just a little bit faster on mine. Same thing for Youtube, Facebook, Despicable Me (cool game :cyclops: ) and so on...
During the flashing it suggests the installation of some apps - well a few of them weren't installed after flashing although I did select them (I remember Maps was not installed for instance... unfortunately I don't remember what else I had to install manually). That means I'm not entirely sure all the tweaks suggested during the flashing were indeed enabled. I couldn't find any Revolution HD specific section in the settings (like you'd have on a Cyanogen ROM) - and couldn't find any app either to test and play with those tweaks. So can someone tell me if there's a way to find/modify those specific options/tweaks ?
What I also can tell is that one of my colleagues, who received the Note 2 the same day as I did, followed me with the rooting and flashing with his device... He seems to have been less lucky than me - he tells me every once in a while, when waking up the phone, he has no reaction when trying to unlock it (he just uses the screen swipe). He has to put it back to sleep and wake it up again before he can unlock it... Is this something that happens to anyone ?
So there you go - my experience is nearly flawless ! I love this ROM and will continue using it !
By the way : does anyone know how updates work with this ROM ? Do I have to backup my apps and data whenever a new Revolution HD ROM comes out for my phone and restore that backup after upgrade ? Or is there some kind of OTA-like update available ?

And you had to dig up a year old thread just to tell us about it?

Well it was the first thread when searching for Revolution HD on this particular device - for one. And I wasn't allowed replying on the thread from the developer about Revolution HD 19.0.
Had I made a new thread about this, you'd have told me to look up other threads on the same topic before creating a new one...
Anyway, I sincerely apologize if I made your day worse somehow with my irrelevant post in such an old thread... I hope you will forgive me
Hey guys this is a rom that i found looking thru the net. I figured i would share it on here with the rest of you guys. Not long ago i posted a subject about a lollipop rom that i thought may have been real but turned out it was a fake. And i know there havent been any roms for this device except for miui. And not everyone likes miui but people want something visually pleasing but different.
That Being said i present to to you guys lollikat. This rom is Based on a port from the Blu vivo iv and has alot of awesome features like working xposed, framework themed to look like lollipop and much more. I am not the developer of this rom again i am just sharing this rom to the rest of you guys.
I have noticed a few bugs with this rom.
There seems to be some small keyboard issues where you type and the keyboard does something other then what you wanted.
When.you first set up the phone it seems that if you leave the option on to recover your old settings from google the Phone goes into a black screen and you cant do anything except hard reset the phone. And when it reboots it continues to do it. Ive found that leaving this setting unchecked will fix this issue.
The audio gets crackily from time to time.
Other then those issues the rom works perfect.
I urge you guys To Flash The rom and see if you get similar results. I am also hoping that by sharing this rom thag a dev will take a look at it and resolve these bugs.
I hope you guys enjoy this rom as it has alot of potential. At least until the lollipop ota rolls out later this month.
Enjoy guys...

any news on this....update...?
Only reason I went back to stock is because of that hideous scrolling animation. Twice as slow to find what you want.

The rom itself isn't bad but that scrolling effect is super annoying and the over scroll looks really poorly done. I'm not sure how to remove it myself.
