I just graduated from a Blackberry to the HTC Incredible. After a few days of use and way too much forum browsing, I still have a few issues that I cannot resolve. Please help if you know of any solutions!
1. PHONE: If I dial one of my local contacts and do not include the area code, the call log labels the call as UNKNOWN. This is somewhat frustrating as every phone that I've ever owned was sophisticated enough to known that I'm dialing a known contact even if the area code is not included.
2. CONTACT SYNC: I synced my Blackberry with Outlook. I had no problem getting all of my contacts into the Incredible, but now I want to sync them with Google Contacts and ditch Outlook. I cannot change the PC Sync label on each contact in my phone though, and I'm not even sure if it has anything to do with it.
3. CALENDAR RECURRENCE: I often need to enter meetings to repeat on multiple days of the week. For instance, I may have a review meeting every Tuesday and Thursday. Is there a calendar app that has the capability of recurrence in this manner? I know this is a popular problem, but I have been unsuccessful in finding a solution. It seems insane to have to enter these types of recurrences through Google Calendar to have them sync with the phone properly.
4. MAIL: If I setup my "native" or default google account in the HTC mail app, it syncs with IMAP to get all of the existing mail. HOWEVER, it will not show any new mail that comes in. I have unchecked the sync with the Gmail App ( I cannot remove the account from the Gmail App), but no matter what I do, I cannot get new mail in HTC Mail. Each time I try removing the account from HTC and setting it up again, the new mail shows up, but nothing new from then on.
5. POPUP NOTIFICATIONS: I love the notifications that I get in the status bar for new mail or text messages. Is there anything that I can use to have these notifications popup in a new window on my screen?
Please help! This is an awesome phone, but it just seems that some of the "basics" are missing.
Not sure about the rest but you can use Handcent for SMS Pop-ups. Just disable the regular notifications in the stock SMS app or else you'll get multiple notifications.
Like he said, handcent will give you a popup window, but dont confuse it for a window in the traditional Windows sense, you have to dismiss it to be able to do anything else after the sms arrives, you cant move it around or anything like that. If youre looking for like a widget to automatically view it, the stock widget seems to work fine.
The contacts issue drives me slightly insane as well, but it is a purely htc problem. All my contacts were formatted as 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx due to occasionally issues with needing 1 before the number, different area codes, etc. They worked just fine on the droid and synced right up to my google account. After pulling them to the incredible from my account they stay formatted like that, but apparently thats not good enough for htc. Its pretty tough to figure out how they want a number formatted, when a call is incoming it shows xxxxxxxxxx, in the contacts list it still shows it as 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx, and depending on the day, time, or weather it seems, the phone may or may not show the contacts name, or just unknown. Its pretty frustrating, to say the least, and I wish there was at least a easy to find guideline on how the contact list works so if i felt like going through and changing contacts, I could.
If you uncheck mail sync with the google account it wont automatically update your mail. Have you tried opening the gmail app, menu then refresh?
Anyway most of your problems stem from the Sense UI, which, although nice in some respects, falls well short of the mark in others. Unfortunately at this time there is no way to remove it until someone succeeds in rooting the phone and unlocking all the partitions. Given the problems devs had with the eris and the level of protection HTC built into the incredible, It may be quite a while until we can get a different rom on the phone.
Whilst using the Galaxy S I have come to miss a few features I had on my HD2.
Does anyone have any input on the following email and text message queries?
1. Email/Text Notification
On both my HD2 and the Desire (Desire email only) the email & text icon shows in green how many email/text messages you have.
Is there any way to have this feature on the Galaxy S?
Note: I know at the Lock Screen the Jigsaw displays a count but this does not indicate what is Email and what is Text.
2. All New Emails on a PC showing as Read
Iv'e noticed even when my Galaxy has it's screen switched off and untouched (in other words I have not checked the email messages), if later when I go to my PC it's showing all the messages as read (the Headings are no longer Bold Text).
Has anyone come across a method to reverse this?
As in when I go to my PC I want to see any new messages I have not yet read as Marked as Unread.
3. Spam Content
I've noticed all messages including Spam are shown on the Galaxy S in the Inbox.
The trouble here is not so much as it being displayed but unlike on the PC which has a dedicated Spam Folder you can't identify which messages are genuine and which are Spam.
Is there any way to sort this out?
I'm dreading clicking on one message only to find out it's Spam.
4. Different Sound Ringtone/Notifications for either Email or Texts?
On the HD2 if a new email or text came in it sounded off a dedicated sound/ringtone, or if I'd missed a Text Message the HD2 flashed Green.
I know on the Galaxy S there is no LED notification to work this idea on but I miss having different sounds.
As an example ~ I'm constantly hearing the phone play a sound ~ which I then have to pick up time after time just to find out if it's an email or text message.
On the HD2 if it were a text message sound I'd pick it up and read it, whereas if it were an email sound I'd leave it until I was ready.
5. No Filter Support on Android Mail using services other than GMail
On the PC I use Yahoo for mail and like other email programs it supports filters where you can add as many folders as you wish.
I have many folders which when mail comes to my yahoo account is automatically filtered to a particular folder ~ as in I have a filter marked 'Brother' where all my Brother's email gets dropped automatically into and when new mail comes in his folder it is shown in bold and indicates such with a number of how many email messages he has sent.
On Windows Mobile, i.e. the Touch HD & HD2 in particular to have the phones display mail that is sent to these filtered folders you select to Manage Folders and add them to the list of messages to download to the phone and view/reply to.
On Android i.e. the Galaxy S there does not appear to be any means of viewing these filtered folders. As such all mail sent to these folders is not received by the phone.
Therefore, does anyone know of a method like on Windows Mobile where you can display these folders?
6. Text Message Character Counting
Again on Windows Mobile Touch HD & HD2 when you went to compose a Text Message whilst you tapped away at your message it would count the characters being used.
Although most of us have an unlimited sms account I used to find this feature useful in that it at least showed me how many text messages it would be to generate the long message.
Quite often I used to try and get the character count down to a single text message quote of just 160 characters or 240 for two messages.
So, the question here is ~ how do we get Android to show the character count?
7. Replying to Yahoo Email Messages directly from the App 'Internet'
I have created a bookmark icon on the Galaxy S which automatically launches the App Internet then the bookmark Yahoo Mail.
I've noticed every time I try to reply to an email message from within the Internet yahoo client (not the Android mail App) it will not allow you to add any text.
Does anyone else have this problem?

It's BT's Yahoo
From what i can see om BT's website there email-offering does only support POP which does not update read-status to the server.
Are you sure you get new emails to your PC when your phone downloads emails aswell?
usually when something downloads emails from an POP-server it takes the emails from the server so that it's only available om the thing that downloaded the email.
Beards, I don't know how it is on the Yahoo email but on the Gmail Android application we go in settings and we change the sound notification.
For SMS in settings isn't there a sound notification alert setting? usually on Android there is and you click it and you decide which ringtone you want, same for email.
Try ChompSMS from the Market (along with Handcent it's the best one in my opinion)
you can customize the ringtones, etc.. and it's a very nice application for SMS (also bubble chat).

Thanks helinus but all I know is on the HD2 when it receives emails it does not alter anything on the PC's Yahoo Mail web page.
Even further, with the HD2 if you have a look at the email messages and mark them as read, when you next go to your PC the messages are still shown as new marked as unread.
This appears to be totally different with the Galaxy S.
I had a talk with my Brother who has a Desire and he says like the HD2 the email messages on the PC remain unread.

You are so, so correct and I can not understand how on earth I missed this.
First at the Messages settings I altered the ringtone then I went to the Yahoo email settings and altered this to a different ringtone.....
Now I have different sounds for both text & email.... thanks Archius.
All I need to do now is sort out items 1, 2 & 3.
you're welcome
for item 1. you can download Chompsms or Handcent and both have a "widget/icon" that has a number next to it that indicates how many new sms you have. (or maybe you can find an app in the market that tells you how many new sms's you have, search for "sms" in the market or try different words)
For the email part, hmmmm.. I use gmail and there's an app that includes a widget for gmail with the same icon as the original while at the same time revealing how many emails we have with a number on the icon... try to find something similar for Yahoo mail ? but it won't be for the lock screen since this phone is brand new, we'll have to wait til people make applications for the phone.
part 3.. I use gmail and it has labels in the gmail app on Android and there's a separate Spam folder... not sure why Yahoo is like that :S.. same for the part where it "reads" the emails on your desktop without you reading them on the phone..

Interesting... I have both a Gmail & Yahoo account.
I'll check out the GMail App ~ do you have a name for it?
I'll see if there's anything similar for Yahoo.

Yes, I see what you mean with GMail ~ it does indeed have an item in the menu named View Labels.
Interestingly there was no Spam folder though.
Also under settings, theres an item named Labels which you can select which are synchronized.
However, back at Yahoo account (for anything other than Gmail)
It's a much better looking account and has more tabs for selecting Inbox/Drafts/Sent/Trash but no Spam.
Nor is there anything in the settings to show any labels.
I suppose as you don't use Yahoo you can't really comment on Item 2 ~ ' All New Emails on a PC showing as Read'.
This one has me flummoxed.
As I mentioned to helinus it's totally different to the HD2 and even on a Desire it doesn't effect the content on the server... Simply switch on the PC, check your email messages and they are still there all marked as unread.
I wouldn't mind so much if after I had checked the messages first on the Galaxy it then marked all messages read as read but no..... You don't even have to switch the Galaxy S on to find when you go to the PC all messages are marked as read.
Right mate... must go.
I have a speech to write tonight and hopefully a little time to do a Market search or two.......
This is the application:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/se.alexanderblom.gmailunreadcount
Gmail Unread Count, simply download from market and use it as a widget (not from the app tray but from the widgets menu)
and simply set up the image to "post something" i forget the name (I no longer have my Android cell I sold it today and getting ready for galaxy s tomorrow or after tomorrow)
There are many images to choose from, my favorite is the post... because it's the same as the 2.1 version.
I was using version 1.5 of Android and I THINK there was Spam folder in Gmail hehe, I do remember it being there... would be strange if they removed it in 2.1.. I doubt it, maybe you should try to make it "sync all" for spam in the settings menu of labels.
have a good night and speech =)
cool info, somewhat similar to what i was looking for
Also, try K9Mail from the market. It is one of the BEST email apps bar none and it is free. It may provide what you are looking for - link is for appbrain.
or this?

Okay... having now had time to play with the settings and less time in theatre, with the help of friends here I've managed to sort out 1 & 4.
I didn't go with any outside Apps/Widgets. In the end I found for SMS, as soon as you switch on the phone at the lock screen if there is any text messages you get a 'jigsaw pattern' with a peace of a jigsaw taken from the complete jigsaw and marked in solid green.
As to the email notification it's now a simple matter of pulling down the Notification window at the top of the screen. It displays all emails from all accounts.
It also shows if you have any text messages as well.
All I need now to do is solve 2 & 3 but I suppose just like 1 & 4 it's a case of less theatre and more hands on the Galaxy S.
Right......
I have another query to add to the list:-
5. No Filter Support on Android Mail

Therefore, does anyone know of a method like on Windows Mobile where you can display these folders?
I'll add this item 5 to my opening post so that anyone new will understand all 5 items.
Yahoo mail does not support IMAP and therefore no folders.
I once had IMAP on yahoo with old touch hd but tried and never got it back.
IMAP by nature will ALWAYS mark messages read if read on another mail host, you probably were using POP.

Here's another question to add ~ Text Message Character Counting

Get Chompsms or Handcent Beards to have character counting lol
now I got the phone yesterday finally !!
and yes Gmail does have Spam, and has all folders.
consider using gmail though I know you would prefer to use Yahoo..

Hi Archius,
Pleased you got your Galaxy S.
I'm afraid due to my business commitments and other ties I have to use Yahoo.
Besides, why should we have to change a browser just to accommodate the Galaxy S?
I've found a 'workaround' but it's not ideal......
I've created a bookmark icon which automatically loads Internet Yahoo Mail.
At least I get to see exactly what I see on the PC.
Trouble is I've now come across another problem which I'll have to add to the list and that is replying to an email message from within the client's (Yahoo) browser. See below.
That's a strange problem and I would not like that at all!
Try using another Internet app.
From the Market try "Dolphin"
also try "xscope"
try "opera"
"skyfire" also
try these four (start with xscope since I think it is the fastest and most stable)
and tell me how it goes =) I hope it will work out for you.
Did you try searching for an app called Yahoo? or k9mail. etc...
Hi all,
I am having a big headache with my phone now, please help if you have any idea to solve this, or if you have any idea to track the root cause! Thanks!
This morning when I woke up, I found that most of the profile pictures of my friends lost in the contact list. After a while investigation, I found that only 16 out of 4xx persons in my facebook left in my contact list.
To fix the issue, I tried a re-sync and this can't help. Except the contacts in gmail, only 16 persons in facebook appears in my contact list. I then tried to delete the facebook account in the contact, reboot my device, and add the facebook account again, but same issue happened again. If I choose not to automatically add all friends in my contact, the wizard will pop up exactly 16 friends to let me choose who should i import, but other 4xx friends disappeared.
I have double checked that I did not click "show friends with contact number only". And the strange things is, if i go to "activites" in the contact app, the update of friends that did not show up appeared in activites, and I can provide comment as well.
I am sure there is something wrong in the import process that skipped many of my friends from import. Anyone did try this and have a fix? Or how can I investigate the "log" or something else to pinpoint out the problem? I am afraid that even I hard reset my phone the same issue will exist!

Please give a hand.. anyone meet this issue?
Same thing with me.. The funny thing is, I can no longer add some of my facebook friends, they are no longer listed on the "Get Friends" menu. The phone thinks that they've already been added.
This happens when facebook sync have errors...
I still can't find a way to get back my missing Facebook friends...

I have searched all over the web and seems only you and me have reported this error.
Can we confirm that this issue is caused by "i9000 database has the corrupted friend" rather than "i9000 not able to interpret the facebook list"? To eliminate the issue, I have tried to clear the SNS / Contact / Contact Location cache / data but they still can't help. If this is the case, resetting the phone (but this is my last step) should help.
Could someone specialized in the i9000 data structure to suggest a way to fully clean up the contact database? Maybe this can cater the case if the db is corrupted by sync error!
Thanks!
I have a new friend in facebook today and as expected, the new friend not appear in the list after data-sync, no matter I want to add it later or add it during sync...
Furthermore, com.sec.android.app.sns/snsDB.db contains only the 16 friends in the database, which I suspect the server did not return the remaining contacts?

I have just tried a hard reset and the problem still cannot be solved... I think I need to call samsung support... This seems to be something wrong in the samsung sync server...
Same here, many contacts that sync from facebook are missing.
I don't use fb, so I don't think I can help, but I just wonder if something dumb in the software is going on. So, if you have 16 friends or however many syncing, these friends don't happen to show up elsewhere in your phone or in the cloud. Right? Maybe it has something to do with trying to match up with names you have in your phone book that have a phone number?
Again, just throwing an idea out there, but similar to how you can import all your google contacts or just the ones with a number.
Your friend counts seem awfully low, so if I'm wrong, try to think if there is anything common link between these friends that do get synced. Perhaps they have something in common that can help the sync...

Thank you very much for your suggestion... to answer your suggestion:
- I did nto click "show contacts with phone number only"
- I tried to dump the database from SNS, inside the database only the 16 friends exist, other 4xx friends no appeared in the database
- I have phoned samsung and they just request me to send them the phone. Their reply is quite inprofessional as they said if other facebook account is ok, that should be your account issue and saume generally can't help with facebook issue. But I am sure the phone is syncing with a samsung proxy instead of syncing to facebook directly.
I tried many things but nothing can fix this issue.
Ditto, I've tried many different things. Hard reset a few times as well and nothing. Reseated battery and put in a new sim. Perhaps maybe the order of things done is what works. I even tried to sync it before I created my google account. Anybody who has gotten this to work and remember what some of the first steps they did when they got their phone, input would be helpful to try and repeat your process.
if anyone can fix it please let me know how.
What firmware are you'll on? I had this problem with JG1. Flashed to JG5 and the problem's gone. But now my twitter contacts don't update. just two of them appear on my phone
I'm guessing there's a problem with the sync in our phones. I'm just learning to live with it
I have got a solution for this.
The problem is originated from the export error of facebook contact. Here is how I treat the problem:
1. Export your facebook contact using the facebook apps "Export Friends To CSV" (Google it and find the link, I cannot post the link)
2. After you have got the CSV, open it using Excel and check whether there are rows containing more than one contact. Apparently, there is error in the first friend contact info of these rows.
3. Remove those friends from your facebook contact (or ask your friends to fix their info).
4. Resync your Android contact with facebook.
This works for me. Hope this help.
Cheers.

edit: oh now i found, the problem is from the last contact that shown in my phone sort by UID from facebook.
Hey guys,
So when I was fiddling around with Gmail's .csv import, and my Google contacts--I imported a number, let's say (555) 555-5555.
But I noticed some weird formatting or something (I actually don't recall the exact issue,) but I changed the formatting. I believe I accidentally removed one bracket, creating (555 555-5555.
I've since fixed the contact many many times--tried changing the name... but the number, now ALWAYS displays at (555 555-5555, in my SMS, rather than NAME <555-555-5555>
Does anyone know how I can wipe my phone's history of this contact, so that it displays properly? It's a very important client, and it just bugs me having it display funky. Even when I go through my SMS inbox, it displays at (555 555-5555, rather than showing the name.
Please help!
Edit: I'm downloading Kies to see if that can help me with this.
Edit: Kies is just giving me the "Connecting the device..." dialog endlessly. Nnoooo......
If the contact is a contact within your Gmail account, try editing the contact there, sync your account on your phone and then check it out.
i love the Droid X, but freaking hate the phonebook. it truley is the worse contact list i've used. is there anyway to flash the stock android phonebook onto the phone?
if not, does anyone know how to limit what contacts are displayed? i dont want everyone ive ever emailed to show up in my contacts list. i've tried changing the displayed contacts to my phone contacts, or gmail contacts, but whenever i leave it for a bit it just resets and shows me hundreds of stupid emails.
I had a similar issue, have had my DX about 6 weeks and found some useful articles on the subject. I think (and only my recollection, could be wrong on this) what I ended up doing was un-syncing EVERYTHING in terms of email accounts and contacts (via My Accounts) and ended up ONLY syncing my gmail contacts.
This was done after finding a nifty Facebook Profile Pic sync to Gmail thing-uh-majig. If you sync contacts, preferrably you limit what you sync because as you said, it goes WAY overboard. It sounds like you sync'd corporate (work) email and contact which is a BIG no-no.
Once I started using roms all my contacts issues went away. Almost all the roms have the normal stock android contacts app. Some can even use WyContacts (the CM contacts app).
Edit: @DNak206, hey I'm from seattle too! My droid X is the one verizon gave away during their @droidlanding promotion thing in Seattle.
Yup dc seem to mic all the contacts but if you hate to look because everything seems mixed up ( facebook contact, phone contact and so on ) you can alway preds menu and select a display group.
The way I manage my contact is I have fixed and organize every thing on my gmail thnen I sync my droid.
The eay I use my contact is I dont go yo the contacts shortcut. I always go to the phone shortcut the select favorites since the droid is keeping a record of all of the contact that iI usually use and it has pwen put in order. I also use the defaul universal inbox to send email. I hit compost and start typing names and email and the droid gives a suggestion and I just select one from there.

NICE! I have lived in Seattle awhile, I guess you could say I'm immune to the weather.
While we're on the topic of contacts though, has anyone noticed the default text messaging/SMS will populate ALL the phone numbers for contacts as opposed to identifying the "mobile" listed # for a contact?
For example, if I'm trying to send a text to Jon Smith. I'll compose new message, start typing "smi" in the :TO line and Jon will pop up in the selectable options (or scrollable rather?). The problem is, I have to swipe or scroll through his work, home, and then finally select his mobile number.
Maybe Windows had one thing over Android because neither my TP1 or TP2 would ever list a work or home # when composing a new text, it was actually smart enough to recognize the mobile # in terms of priority. Anyone else found a fix for this, maybe a text app (like handscent or whatever) will resolve?
Handcent or chompSMS might do the trick. When calling someone I know theres an option to remember the number you dialed, not sure about when texting..
If you always send msg or call john he will be under your favorites list. I always go thru the favoritw list and click the call icon on the side of the name to make a call or i click the name then clic the mail icon to send sms.
