Anyone notice the dedicated search symbol under the volume key??? - XPERIA X10 General

As the title suggests..
I was always under the impression that Android phones were required to have a dedicated search key.
When I originally saw that the x10 didn't I was slightly confused and disappointed.
However since buying the x10 I've noticed the symbol (magnifying glass) below the volume key.
Any ideas why? It doesn't seem to double as a search key and if its supposed to its a p**s poor design IMHO.

its not the search key..
its for camera zoom...

Settings->Buttons question

Hey. When i go to Settings->Buttons it has a layout of all the buttons (1-5). For Button 4, voice record, has a second option.. Button 4 (Hold). Is there a way to put the "Hold" option on other buttons?
Thanks,

one word,,,,,,,yes
another - Google
look for hbutton
also look for mortbuttons for a slightly different type, which gives you sub menus of apps for each button you press
thanks for the leads. i downloaded the "mortbuttons" app, but i found the interface confusing. In light of this, i tried finding "hbutton," and haven't had any luck; do you have a link for this app? thanks again.
here
btw it was the third result when i googled 'hbutton'

Mapping to OK and Win buttons

Noting that neither AEBPlus or DoubleLauncher seem able to access the OK and Win buttons, are there any other methods to assign an action to double or other states of these buttons? For example, it would be great if I could assign "close/kill" to a double OK click, or launch Resco Explorer with a double Win button click. Right now, only the Browser and Comm Manager buttons seem to be assignable, and press/hold for the Browser seems fixed to VueFlo. With AEBPlus, press/hold for the Comm Manager button shows up separately but can be assigned. I got really used to quick launch on my Wizard. I am finding iLauncher to be an OK sub in some measure, given that lots of icons can show on the VGA screen, but miss a quick double-tap to launch a frequently-used program...
yes same for me, if somebody have a way to map these keys ...
Why hasn't this ***hole been banned from the forum yet? Its been 27 posts of spam so far.
I've banned him and removed his messages. This my leave a "hole" where they used to be, so FYI to anyone else - ladysovereigna has been permanently banned for spamming.

Back to topic... anyone have an idea??
I think it can be done, bit I've never had an Athena to test it on. Will give it a go one day. Will have to get a rom dump and see how things have changed on the newer hardware.
Have you tried all the usual suspects, ie AE Button Plus?

No luck with AE Button Plus...
I haven't tried the Win-button, but I've mapped the Ok button to ViJayOKButt (much better ) using AEButton Plus.

How were you able to do that? I don't see that button.
The Win-button can be displayed as an option (via Add Buttons menu). However, the new assignments don't seem to work.
The new assignment works. I select File -> Add Button, and click the OK-button. The code "4075" shows up, and I click the "Add Button" button p).
From my experience you can map the 'OK' button but mapping on this hardware key seems to be limited and no mapping to the 'Windows' key.
IRC the developers of AEbutton informed me that MS have reserved those buttons strictly for O/S use and that AE hadn't found a way around it yet...that was over a year ago, but it seems they have made no real progress in this area except for a little with the 'OK' button.
I believe Vijay is right though...it can be done...just takes someone really dedicated to finding the solution.
Bear in mind though that most PPC's have more buttons than the Athena...hence the reason why AE haven't 'possibly' done their best to resolve this, or maybe it causes to many problems..who knows?
I've done it before on other devices, some time back, but will have to investigate Athena at some point. Can anyone point me at a freely available rom file for it? I've never even seen the hardware..

I tried this, and "OK" did not show as an option. But one of the other buttons I added ended up with code 4075, and this now works. There is also an option for "Win" button but that doesn't work at all.
i have both of mine binded using ae button plus
what you do is instead of trying to select the button you hit add button and push the button you would like to bind

Hi Vijay.
Fellow member Antivirus has some good internal photos of the hardware and I think some other good info on the Ameo try this link. Antivirus.
lol, thanks mackaby007, but I don't need to see inside the device itself, just its rom. Although I would need to test on the device itself.
Anyway, just theoretical for now, need to see a rom.

X-button on the lower-right corner?

As lots of users here I suppose, I mostly use my finger for screen touching and I find it a bit annoying to always drive my thumb all the way up to the upper-right corner so lower corners x-button would be a much better solution. No i'm not that lazy, but driving my thumb up sometimes loosens my grip on the device. Plus, I think that this solution increases working speed as well.
Is there any application which can be used to put an x-button on the lower-right corner of the screen (or lower-left for lefties)? e.g, next to the right/left softkeys.
If this app doesn't exist don't you think it would a great idea for a new one? Thx a lot.
I always use my OK button on the lower panel.. Look at attachment picture.. The OK button acts as a close

I own a Touch too, and I mapped the camera button to OK/Close.
If you still want to have the camerabutton, there's software to add short presses and long presses for different apps

Yeah yeah I've already tried all this.. But I think I was precise in what I asked for: A lower-right corner on-screen x-button.

Some Screenshot of AEBPlus setting and HL
(Sorry for orientation:
{The Dimension limits for this filetype are 620 x 280. We were unable to resize your file so you will need to do so manually and upload it again. Your file is currently 240 x 320. } so i need to right 90degree)
On other devices I have owned, the red telephone button acted as an OK/Close button, however, on the HTC Touch, a short press closes GPRS connection, and a long press locks the device.
However, it might suit you to change the registry to map this key back to the OK/Close button.
I haven't ever come across something which puts the x button on the bottom right hand side of the screen.
use phm powerToys to add any program (such as a close link) to the tray of your ppc (cab below the url link)
http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/PowerToys/
or vijay555's tool
http://www.vijay555.com/?Releases:VJTrayLaunch
you may need an app coling tool like this one

Can the volume rocker be used to scroll through menus and web browsers?

Thought I read somewhere that there was an app that could do this but haven't had any luck finding it online. Slowly getting used to my HD after coming over from the Hermes but missing the Hermes's wheel and curious to see if this works at all as an alternative. Especially for browsing long segments of texts.

Good programme thanks for the tip. Can tie page up and down to the volume buttons but doesn't scroll proper. Still makes a big difference.

Suggestion: Camera Button

I think it could be very useful if there was a physical camera button on the SGS2, but since it doesn't have one, i figured maybe we can "create it"...
How about turning you power off button into a camera button while using the camera?
What i'm suggesting is to build an application that can solve this problem.
If anyone thinks he can develop an app for that, i'm sure it would help us all

On my old phone (T-mobile pulse) I made a mod to change what the keys did by editing a file called surfkey.kl (or something similar) in /system/usr/keylayout
Ive just had a look on the GSII and the equivilant files are called sec_key.kl and sec_touchkey.kl (the former controlls the hard keys and the later the capacitive keys)
In the file sec_key.kl on the the keys mapped is key 212 (not sure what this is, but can find out in recovery mode) which is mapped to camera, suggesting that there is a camera button in some form on this device.
If not, it shoudl be the simple case of finding one of the keys you done use, the changing it to Camera.
Aaron
Edit: So ive had a look in recovery and cannot find key 212. Seems that most of the keys that are mapped in this file are not actually there.
I'm not a developer...
CyanogenMod 7 has configurable camera button to e.g. a volume key. I'm personally going to use CM7 when it's out so not worried about that.
i have remapped "vollume down" as camera key... but i have lost the "volume down" feature. ..... it´s really hard to find the related key in the camera-app itself.
