Facebook idea? - Android Software Development

Excuse this if its just plain dumb but I wanted to throw it out there.
Would there be a way to make an app that insted of polling facebook every "minutes" it would receive the data from a web server? The server would do the dirty work of gathering the data every so many minutes and if anything changed it would hn send it to yooour phone. sounds a bit stupid when I typed it out but when i thought of it it was killer...lol.

What you're talking about is called "push" notifications, because instead of the phone "pulling" the data down, the server "pushes" it out to you. You'll have to wait for the Facebook team to add this functionality to their app

no, not correct
just someone to do the server/app,
doesn't need to be the Facebook team at all

What re the benefits of having content pushed to you instead of being pulled by the phone?

for your phone to pull, it has to use the network which will use battery, doing this often will use more battery.
with a push, you get two things
'real time' ( well, there will be some latency )
less battery use, as your phone only 'does stuff', when there is something to do

Consolidate email and auto power off/on

Is there a way to have all your email accounts show up in one spot or an app that does it for you? Also on my BB8330 there was an auto turn off/on feature that turned your phone off at a certain time and back on again at a designated time. Does the Hero have the same capability or an app? Sorry for all the questions.

You can connect just about any emai account to the 'Mail' application that you have, you don't have to check g-mail through the gmail app. If you use the Mail app you just have to change the IMAPI settings on the gmail website.
Auto on and Off like a BB? - Never used it when I had one. Seemed kinda pointless lol.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about a unified inbox, like what is possible on the Blackberry. I'm not sure if that can be done or not. There is this great feature on the Market though, it's called "Search". It's amazing.

Ahhh I see - You could just have all your accounts FWD'd to another single account....
Doesn't one of the 2.0+ ROMs have a mail client with a unified inbox?

Like the gmail account you need to use the phone
Then you have a unified inbox, separate inboxes via labels, a favorites folder across all inboxes using the starred feature, and battery saving push mail alerts. Other than Exchange I see no reason to use the actual mail app as it's inferior.
Blackberry users need to realize Gmail = BIS, without the 7% downtime.

Heh. I forgot the native contact and calendar sync in my list. And I quote the 7% figure from RIM. They claim an average of 93% uptime and seem proud of that ptitful figure lol. No need for me to kick them while they are down

Facebook push notifications

They just started up for me again. Anyone else?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
they've never worked for me
not on 2.2 or 2.3
facebook needs new developers. whoever is in charge of that app is clearly terrible at their job
I haven't seen Facebook use push notifications on any Android phone yet.
They have polling settings (30 minutes, an hour, etc), but not push. There's not even an option for push.
the changelog said after a certain version update it enables the push notification. But.. never worked for the though...
Pretty sure they only work for certain types of notifications and you have to make sure they are enabled.
They have been off and on again. And for me, they are now on.
I just got one a few minutes ago also.. it's been a while..
I was wondering about that. it started yesterday....so, it works for me now
Finally, some useful replies.

they've never even said. the developers are the worst
they put "push updates" in the changelog yet there's not even settings for it
and left in the polling settings. which only work for a few things anyway
it's a total mess

Agreed. The Facebook app is ****ing horrendous. Heads should be rolling over there at the awfulness of their app... yet they keep updating the worthless sorry excuse for an app.

I think that you need to be signed into chat to enable push notifications.

I don't see a way to not be signed onto chat, not permanently at least. Regardless I am always signed in and get no push updates for anything but chat.
Once you sign out, it stays signed out, it's pretty permanent for me.

I thought that might be true, but have no way to verify it since after signing out when i go back to the chat screen i am signed in again. Really poor interface, have we mentioned recently how terrible the apps developers are?

How to turn off push for gmail accounts

I would like to change to for example 'every 15mins'. The 3 accounts all being pushed is taking its toll on my battery.

Ehhh... the whole idea of "push" is that new emails are pushed from the server. As opposed to your phone "pulling" them from said server. So no, you cannot. Even switching off sync will not impact your receiving emails on gmail.
However, there are apps out there (search for it) that will enable your data connection and/or sync function periodically. This one you can set for 15 mins, 1 hour, or whatever the app offers and you want.

I'm pretty sure if you disable gmail sync you don't get emails anymore through the stock gmail app at least.

Actually, you can switch off push, IF you start using the moto blur corporate email. Lookup the settings for active sync, it uses the microsoft exchange method for email access, and also syncs calendar and contacts. Once setup, open the account through messages, and turn off push. I did this, and my battery life tripled.

[Q] Getting Gmail to update when deleting emails from computer?

Hi,
I have an issue that I'm not sure how to solve.
I have a Gmail account that I access via the TF and my X10 phone, and my laptop.
When I do things like delete mail from my laptop gmail, and then I open up gmail on my TF (or my X10 for that matter) those same emails will still be there...I have to manually delete them from my android devices.
Is there a setting I'm missing that needs to be set differently?

How long are you waiting between the moment you delete the e-mail(s) from your laptop and the moment you check your devices to see if they register that the e-mail(s) are actually gone? When you access your Gmail account from your laptop are you using the web-based Gmail page or have you setup your favoured e-mail client to receive them instead? If you're using the web-based method then try waiting a few minutes for your Android devices to catch up to the latest change, it should eventually sync the changes.

That's weird , after only a minute or so of making changes to my Gmail account such as changing a message's label my devices usually have caught up by then. The changes to my mind should get sent to your TF when you next connect to WiFi, or if you're already connected it should get 'pushed' within a minute or two. As for how often you 'should' sync your folders, your choice .
Well maybe something is set wrong on my android devices....
I can be out...delete a read email on my phone, an hour later go to my TF or my laptop and have to delete the same email from there.

Try the other way round, i.e. delete an e-mail or make some other change like a label change on the TF first, then check the phone and tell me if anything different happens.
I take it that you are not using the Gmail app?

Dave

That went really fast...maybe one minute or so. I deleted it off of the TF and within 1 minute it was off of my phone and I checked Gmail on the laptop and it was gone too...
Maybe it's only when deleting from the web version that it takes a while to be gone from the tf?
I'll try again...maybe this was all my imagination...or there was just a temporary glitch.

Check the account sync settings on your phone, perhaps your phone isn't currently set to auto-sync any changes or new stuff to your account.
The only thing this sounds like is that you have syncing turned off.

I mean the TF app called "Gmail" as opposed to the one that is called "Email" - the reason I ask is that you are talking about IMAP and the Gmail app does not use IMAP.
Regards,
Dave
The IMAP settings are in my phone...not the TF.
I'm not sure what's going on now...it seems to be working fine....I think that there was a setting wrong and I also wasn't paying attention to what was going on...

Original s5 email app SUCKS!!

God damn this app is pissing me off! Every few minutes i get a notification that i have new email. I open the app and its the same damn emails i already marked as read. Few mintues later same thing all over again, sometimes it marks a few new ones as new that were read previously. Wtf!!
Can someone recommend a better email solution for these phones please?

Just a regular cox, comcast, at&t kind of email. My home email.
gmail works fine.
Interesting. I have my Client Location, and my Company email both tied in through the on-board S5 email app and have no issues. Both of which I use with Outlook or Office365 online. I'm sorry, I thought I would be able to have a suggestion for you. Other than perhaps slowing your push times, or sorting through the emails at time of receipt. Good luck to you.
I think it is because it is based upon email count, not time, such as 30 days, which is annoying. I miss the checkbox always there to mark as read, now you have to hit setting to get select, so annoying.

You should select S5 email (Other mails), not corporate one, and select "automatic push" so it will only notify you when new mail arrive.

This. I thought that I was just gonna be using Nine to bypass the exchange security stuff but I really like it. Enough to where I'll probably use it on all future devices even if I can use stock without exchange security enabled.

You can get the checkboxes back. In the app go to settings>display> uncheck "Hide checkboxes." Works fine here. Once you have that activated, you select whichever message(s) you want to mark as read using the checkboxes then push the button on the bottom right that looks like a little open envelope to mark as read.
