As explained by fellow member's for running Maemo, or android or any other linux platform OS first we need a working linux, and some brilliant minds are working on this so have trust in their work at some point of time we surely will have the base on which most of the future projects rely upon.
That sounds great! So all we need is some patience

Yeah. Give it some time. They will eventually have a great running linux kernel on the HD2. Here's the thread for the linux project.

. . . with understanding development using Java for Android?
Do I start with Java books?
Where do I read about how to set up an Android development environment? I'm trying to read through everything at the Android Developers website, but I was hoping someone could point me towards better/more information.
I know this is a VERY n00b question, but in order to avoid asking any further n00b questions, I'd like to come to this party better equipped.
TIA -
Darryl

Do you know Java?
Thank you for the reply!!
That's where I'd like to get started. I know Android is a FULL OS written in Java, so a beginner is looking at the equivalent of Mt. Everest from the viewpoint of a new born just learning to walk, but, as I said, I'd like to start somewhere.
Advice for:
what texts to start with
texts that help provide a good foundation to address Android
texts that are the next step after beginning
how to properly build a Java IDE with Eclipse
Would probably be a good starting place.

Honestly, I'd start out PMing some of the devs in the Development forum... Cyanogen, Enomther, etc. I've PM'd Enomther before back in the G1 forum and he's super responsive...
Probably your best bet.

Thank you. I'll give it a shot.
Actually the reason why I open this thread is wanna remind all the users in the forum...Please just don't waiting for new builds everyday and forget the developers that do coding behind the scene...without their works, there is no android chef or build until now...Although htc linux devs are not working on this for donation...however,hope everyone here...can contribute anything to them: appreacition, gratitude,or maybe pennies...

Development thread for Linux on the HTC HD2
PLEASE READ THE FAQ BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS
Introduction:
To run any Linux based user space on a device -this includes android, debian, ubuntu, openembedded, etc- you need a working Linux kernel.
This thread discusses the development on Linux kernel and user space on the HTC HD2.
All android ports to windows phones are based on the efforts of porting the Linux kernel to these devices. This is what all the porting is about. Nobody is porting Google Android to these phones. It works already.
Contributing:
This is not a secret club. All source code and development information is publicly available. Everybody who is willing to contribute is free to join the development process.
People working on porting Linux to HD2:
You can donate to the developers putting a lot of time into this Linux kernel port.
(putting together android files is not the porting)

Hi,mate..thanks for your support...haha...nevermind just keep this thread open...Since there are many new users in this forum, hope they can understand how hard to port a non-native OS to a device...It is much harder than cooking a rom...and i heard that Dcordes said he maybe gonna release his own build...don't know how it gonna looks like...finger crossed...thats gonna be awesome...
I do hate people that assume the devs just sit behind their PC's 24/7 working on this, they have a life, let them do it at their own pace.
On another note, whats the main language they have to code in?

Same here...Many people just assume devs working on this non-stop, and now another situation has occurred, many users just keep waiting for new builds and donate to chefs...most of them totally forgot how hard for the devs to fix those bugs, get LED,WIFI TETHER,TS....etc...everything....working on our lovely hd2 android...
kernel is the most important part in the development progress but cooking is also important

Good job..mate...haha,I'm busy recently, thats why I dont have time to link the donation link to here...thanks a lot...
There are many users making builds and I believe we should try many different builds. Even if we can't make donations we can give recognition, feedback and praise to the people for their hard work. Chefs do this for a hobby and I believe that some recognition goes a long way.
no we do not want "many different builds" because this is just a confusion for everyone! instead everything should be in 1 maybe 2 builds of 2.2 froyo with different home screen options. now anyone with 1 hour of free time can make a build that is EXACTLY the same as the one before or outdated, just it doesnt have battery widget or twitter app. Thats sucks!
Also updating first post would be convinient since you (Sylau90) "do not let" other ppl to make new threads. Also thread title sucks.

Hey guys I was hoping you could help me out. Great site here and awesome community. Can someone just simply give me the proper reading material in order to port this? I am trying android developing I use to do some minor developing but never with android, I will have about a year of free time and I was thinking I might as well be productive. Just a start, yes I googled it, and I just get lots of crap of games ported to android not how it was ported. Just some beginner sites would be awesome. I know I can't just port games I need to know android basics just don't know where to look

Like I said anything would help
I love how every application or program have the same tutorial.. damn you to hell "Hello World"!!!!
A port is in progress at hackcasual dot net
Help is most definitely welcome.
It seems there isn't a lot of activity around the Arc yet, so I am going to attempt to learn how to cook SE Xperia ROMs, from scratch :-S
I would appreciate pointers to the best tutorials and software (it will speed up the process); I am a very quick learner so I hope to be able to contribute something to XDA Devs, even if it comes out half-baked!.
Wish me luck...(gulp!)
Nice i also was planning to work on android roms (just for fun) I'm a fulltime Linux user so i know my way around Linux systems. But nice to hear some others also intrested.
here is a handy tutorial to start

I know there was a thread with unix scripts i can't fin it anymore, lost it forever
Sounds good. I think the first thing we need though is a recovery with nandroid, makes testing experimental roms (ie, ones I made made myself which likely wont work) a lot safer!
I would take linux courses just for that, I hope one day we will have courses for Android dev.!
Till then I love to mod the look of statusbar, icons, lockscreen and camera. I just have to change the appropriate png pic and edit some xml files

It's not hard to learn Linux. Just start using it fulltime and get familier with the terminal. I never followed a Linux course and now i'm now my way around. I ahve ubuntu servers and using ubuntu fulltime (for 4 years) now it's easy to use ubuntu because you can do everything from the GUI.
I write about Linux and read/follow sites related to Linux.
If you don't use it it's hard to learn just try to install dualboot and try using fulltime Linux. You will have problems like something isn't working well fixing the issue will help you learn stuff
cool
thanks for the links, I shall read them later. I will have to get a linux system running, I'm assuming I can duel boot it on a laptop...time to google...
