New HTC Snap Owner needs some guidance. - Dash 3G, Snap General

So....
I have a HTC Tattoo and I just ordered a HTC Snap, for development and business use (I'm a secondary school student and a soon-to-be freelance web designer) but I didn't want to get a blackberry.
I've got a few questions. The last time I've used Windows Mobile was ages ago, on a HP iPAQ rx1950. It lagged like crap. How is the performance with Windows Mobile 6.5? Is it speedy or is it still laggy?
That's the method of jailbreaking/rooting the HTC Snap? Can you link me to a thread? I've tried looking in some forums, but I'm kinda confused - too used to one-click-root on Android.... Heh. I think it would involve flashing the SPL, a possible CAB file to add administrator privileges and some other things.
What's a good ROM for the Snap?
Is there any chance of running Android on the Snap?
Thanks again, peeps.

The model of the one that I purchased is S521. What is the codename for this one?

WM6.5 on the Snap is pretty decent. It has a much faster processor and lots more RAM than the rx1950. WM Standard also tends to be slightly more responsive on equivalent hardware compared to WM Professional.

There is no jailbreaking or rooting with WM - admin privileges are automatic. App unlocking may need to be done depending on your carrier, but is a trivial process. If you're looking to flash a custom ROM, then HardSPL will need to be flashed. Check the ROM development board.

Depends on taste. Some people like a basic Stock ROM, others like an all-inclusive tweaked-out ROM like 3VO. If none suit your taste, feel free to fire up a kitchen and make your own.

HTC Maple, I think.

Thanks for the extensive reply. Completely gets me on track to get started with my Snap!
I'll possibly opt for the tweaked ROM, I looked at the screenshots and they totally impressed me.
For themes in WM6, is it like Windows XP's theming - a theme can change the look of the start bar and everything? Windows Mobile 5 only allowed people to change the colors and wallpaper... Nothing much else.
Thanks again!

WM 6.1 ROM

Exist any WM6.1 ROM for HTC Dream ? Please dont ask me why I need this.
Thanks.
No, not going to happen, been asked many, many, many times already.
why not ? where is the problem to cook non official ROM ?
For one, its a waste of a perfectly good phone to put that CRAP on it. If you want a piece of crap, buy a piece of crap.
Second, the required drivers simply don't exist.
What do you men crap ? OK, the second explanation is better.
I think lbcoder got it right. windows mobile IS Junk. I have a Kaiser in addition to the G1. The Kaiser has great hardware minus the KB, small screen, and quiet speaker, but it has a horrific OS e.g. It's slow, locks up, restarts itself for no reason.
The G1 however has a great OS that needs little or no changing at all, but dumbed down hardware.

Since your question is completely asinine I'm going to ask you why you need this: Why do you need this?
Edit: Oh and You're Welcome.

Bottom line is if you want WinMo, buy a WinMo phone. Most of the hackers working on HTC Dream are working on Android.
Oh yeah and use the search.

I concur. I couldn't imagine going to winmo after being blessed with android.
he he he he....
I guess we want what we don't have? Many folk are working on porting Android to our WM devices.... Maybe it's just the challenge of it all?

Now that I think about it; I sure wouldn't mind the ability to dual boot. Not even sure why but maybe just for that hell of it.
Makes no sense
I had the T-mobile Dash before the G1 and wound up giving the dash to my wife. I was helping her learn to use it and only then did I realise how goofy the setup of it all is. They say the beauty of it is that it tries to emulate the Windows experience, but if my desktop worked like that...I'ld have a mac.

Best post in this thread. Completely true and funny as hell.
That being said I'm STILL excited to see what WinMo 7 brings to the table.

Can HERO Run WM6.5

Hi
Is there anyway HTC Hero can run WM6.5 ?
Thank you.
Hi!
No. Thank God.
While technically possible, from a religious point of view it would be considered a sin.
If you intend to give WM a try, you'd better to lend a WMphone and play with it.
If you changed your mind about a Linux powered phone, ebay is the way.
I cast you out from our sacred land
Ofcourse it would be possible... if you have the source code for WinMo and got the drivers for the Hero hardware.`But tyou don't have that (I am sure HTC got both though).
But why would you?
I am sure that you can put Android on already existing hardware too (how about Android on S60 phones or even the iPhone)

Technically != by anyone
But the idea of running Android on the E series is quite interesting though.
I could even revert back to a N0k1a in that case ...

Life could be actually easier. But won't.
This is why we have the tax, the flu and Windows.
agreed. Windows and tax suck...although the flu is a great way to get some chicken soup and a few days off work!!
Maybe this is something for you in the future???

Not really. We need the native Android on all phones.
Unleash your phone, give it adroid!

Request: Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM for the HTC S740

This is a request, there are a lot of HTC S740 owners who need a rom with Windows Mobile 6.5 standard voor their HTC S740!
Even the HTC S710 (vox), almost 3 years old has a cooked ROM!
Please o please!! Who can be our hero!
you are right...
I was using S710 for 2 years, last time with WM 6.5
They cooked it from HTC Snap.
Why not do it for S740?
Greetings,
RA
I don't know if people need a WM6.5 ROM
Until we have a HardSPL, we can't do anything with regards cooked ROMs. This is being worked on at the moment, but it's a little unfair on the developers to expect them to be able to just click their fingers and magic up a hack. They spend their own time working on these things, whether they do them or not depends on demand and how many people really want it and make donations towards the costs involved in development.
Cooked ROMs are not official...they're hacks, and yes they're fun to use and in some cases quite useful, but nobody has a right to have one made just for them on demand. The standard HTC software is actually very good on the S740.
I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see a WM6.5 ROM, just that you either need more patience or to do it yourself. It takes a LOT of work to customise software.

Can't Lock phone.

Hi all, new here and very much liking it. I have a little problem, I am running the latest Androkkid on my Hero G3 and noticed that I am unable to lock my phone from the Androkkid UI. Does anyone jnow how to fix this please?
wrong forum. this is the android forum, not the forum for windows software that looks like android.
edit: or you got something mixed up. when i google androkkid it tells me that it is a ui for windows mobile that looks like android. but that won't run on a hero, as there is no windows mobile for the hero.
Yeah i agree, Androkkid is for windows mobile only.
So even if you do have WM on your Hero, why would anyone do this then make it look like the OS that they had on there already?
Im totally confused.

No Sir, you didn't mixed up, but what's you don't know that the Chinese copied the Hero few months ago (100% looks the same) but it uses WM 6.5 with androkkid
No doubts the original poster is a Chinese
100% looks the same doesn't mean it is the same.
The chinese version is not a HTC Hero and therefore questions about it shouldn't be posted here.
BOOM!

[Q] Percent of HD2 (Leo) Owners using Android

I could not find any similar poll and the curiosity is killing me. Please vote so that we can get a picture of how people are using their HD2/Leo. The options are:
I have not tried to run Android or Custom Windows Mobile ROMs and am using original Windows Mobile
I have managed to run Android or Custom Windows Mobile ROMs but prefer using original Windows Mobile
I have managed to run Android or Custom Windows Molile ROMs and I mostly use Custom Windows Mobile
I have managed to run Android or Custom Windows Molile ROMs and I mostly use Android
EDIT: I messed up the first poll option. It is to say "I have not tried...."
The idea is pretty good (been wondering myself for a while). However, don't you think that this is a little biased? I mean, it is in an Android Forum. Shouldn't it be moved to HD2 General Forum? Just a thought, anyways, good idea man!
Merry Xmas from Portugal

Isn't posting it in the general section biased too? I'm not sure if that many Android users still go there. I know I don't (never been a WinMo user though, so I don't have the old habit of going there).
It's probably best to take the averages of the results here and in HD2 general.

I'm heavy Android user (I own a G1 and I tried almost every possible ROM for it), but right now I'm in love with WM, it's all new for me .
Wow I never would have guessed 97%+ of Leo owners have tried an android build...
surprised with so much HD2-android users
thanks for the poll and merry christmas!

I have to say I was passionate about Windows and Touch Flo on the HD2.
But the great builds from the folks at XDA Devs coupled with the cool and cheap / free apps on the Android market convinced me to make the jump.
Desire HD is not Touch Flo, but it is close.
I never used a winmo on my hd2 directly after the buy i use android
Thanks to all developers, I'm proud to be an Android HD2 owner Also, I need to thank custom WinMo developers because without them running a stable Android build is very problematic and difficult. MERRY CHRISTAMS & HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Btw i just got HD2 today, it's awesome phone. I'm running mostly android on it since i have only 4GB card. When i get 8GB one i will try ubuntu and anything else that is availble here.
Guilty as charged! I have been using Android on the HD2 since I figured out how to load custom winmo and android roms. Thanks to all the developers!
