I just got a nexus one exactly one week ago and Im lovin it. I made the switch from win mo. I had the Touch HD and Xperia X1. Now I dont want to root the nexus because it voids warranty and there seems to be many problems users are having with it. I dont want to have no warranty if anything happens to mine.
So I would like to know, what apps should I get and what widgets. There is a very limited number of widgets on the nexus and I want to fill up the home screen. I downloaded engadget and they have a widget, I downloaded a couple of games, xda app, and the htc sense keyboard. So I hope you other nexus users can help me since Im an andoid newbie.

What are you looking for in a widget?
I'm currently using..
Beautiful Widgets (paid)
AudioManager
DaysUntil
National Rail
Network Widget
PhotoFrame
Pure Calendar (paid)
Pure Music (paid)
nice, just downloaded. audio manager. Im looking for sense like widgets. If there was an htc desire compatable with att 3g. I wouldve got it
Hmm ok I can tell you about a couple of apps that I use often at least:
Handcent SMS - Much better than the built in messaging app imo
Dolphin Browser - I prefer it to the stock browser
3G Watchdog - Keeps track of how much you transfer over 3G, very useful
Agenda Widget - A good widget for showing upcoming appointments
RealCalc - A calculator with a "few" more options than the stock oen
Nimbuzz - Will cater to most of your IM needs
Spotify - Good for streaming music and storing it offline if it's available in your country
Doggcatcher - Great program for podcasts
Barcode Scanner -Good to have to scan in those barcode links that are used a couple of places
Battery Indicator - Gives you a number to look at in the notification bar instead of the pretty useless built in battery icon
Connectbot - SSH client
Smart Keyboard - A great keyboard with different skins and dictionaries for many languages
Documents to Go - Great office suite
Xe Currency - Keeps you up to date with conversion rates
Weather widgets - A good clock/weather widget
Games:
Don't know about that many games and I can't get the full versions of most of them since I don't have paid apps where I come from and I'm not rooted, but I can suggest a few.
Snesoid - Essential imo, play all those great SNES games on your phone and you won't need much else on the gaming side
Abduction - Jumping cows, what else do you need from a time waster?
SFCave - classic game from the early Palm devices if I'm not mistaken
Toss It - Good time waster
3d Pong - Classic flash game
Anways my tip for you is just to look around the market and test out apps, many are free and most have at least a lite version and that is the best way to find out if you like/need an app.

I'd definitely give Beautiful Widgets a go then
fwiw, handcent sms is a great app. it totally replaced mine.
the htc keyboard is great, i have it on my rooted desire rom.
Beautiful Widgets is what your looking for if you want sense style widgets. I believe they nearly got sued for their weather clock.
I love the textsfromlastnight widget, lol, but dunno if you like that site.
i keep the facebook stock widget open.
weather/news widget is actually ok, but i use the desire weather widget.

Just thought I'd start a thread on what the best android widgets are (paid and free). I installed the various Tattoo builds and love the HTC interface, but as of now, they are just too processor/memory intensive and they lag up the phone too much. I've now installed Myn's Warm Donut because it runs fast and so far, hasn't caused any hang ups.
So far, I've installed Home++ and it works well as a home replacement. I'm looking for a weather widget to replace the HTC weather widget, and so far have only found WeatherBug as a widget. Works well, but isn't flashy.
What are everyone's favorite Android Widgets???
I would say my number one widget when im not using hero or tattoo is "beautiful widgets". I love the animated weather and hero like weather clock. not the latest version because htc asked them nicely to change the interface because its to much like the real thing, so i use like 2.36. i think 2.5 and up are changed interface and its not near as good. it is a paid app. i also just tried home++ and didnt quite find it as appealing as open home. home++ changes android interface too much for me. no home replacement apps work with live wallpapers as of yet.
You want Weather Widget 2 Ver. 3.2...its the best I think you can find and works well with Myn's build.
PM me if you cant find it.
So farm here's what I'm running on Myn's Donut build without any problems at all:
Accuweather
Amazon
AP Mobile
Facebook (widget)
Home++ (home replacement)
NewsRob
The Weather Channel (widget)
Ultimate Stopwatch
Google Voice
Weatherbug (widget)
Smooth Calendar (widget)

Thanks wdbanks - I found a version but it doesn't fit 240 x 320. Is that app only for 320 x 480 screens?
I use weather widgets 3.2 on 240x320
Let me start by introducing myself. I'm the new owner of a Droid 2 Global (but I'm posting in Plain Droid 2 General, because the distinction has no relevance for my questions).
I previously owned an HTC Titan (which I left stock, which is unusual for me). Before that I had an HTC Apache, which I customized heavily, back in the day when XDA only covered HTC WinMo phones. I was even customizing ROMs, although not at a particularly advanced level. I mostly followed other forums, but many of the important utilities used originated here.
But enough of the old history. I now have the D2G. Relative to the tiny low resolution screen of my WinMo phones, this was a real upgrade .
So the first thing I did was root the phone, and installed Fission. I've also installed various apps I've seen recommended, and am wanting to hear any suggestions people have for other apps.
I'm no interested in most of the things that top many "must-have apps" lists, like social networking apps, and I'm especially interested in knowing about interesting obscure apps, but I could still have missed some interesting mainstream apps.
I'm including an annotated list of my currently installed (non-rom) apps.
Thanks for any suggestions!
Current Apps:
Adobe Flash Player 10.1 (com.adoble.flashplayer)
Adobe Reader (com.adobe.reader)
AudioManager (com.smartandroid.audiowidget) I'm not particularly happy about this app's widgets being refreshed by polling, rather than by somehow subscribing to the volume change events. Is there a similar root-only app hat works like that?
Barcode Scanner (com.google.zxing.client.android)
Compass (com.apksoftware.compass)
Dolphin Browser HD (mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser)
Droid 2 Bootstrapper (com.koushikdutta.droid2.bootstrap)
Earth (com.google.earth)
eSpeak TTS (com.marvin.espeak)
Fission Rom Manager Lite (br.romdownloader)
GMail (com.google.android.gm) Fission omits this since it is on the market
Goggles (com.google.android.apps.unveil) Interesting, albeit not practical
Google Sky Map (com.googl.android.stardroid) A bit more practical
Google Translate (com.google.android.apps.translate)
GPS Test (com.chartcross.gpstest)
Maps (com.google.android.apps.maps) Fission omits this since it is on the market
Root Explorer (com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer)
Shopper (com.google.android.apps.shopper)
Street View (com.google.android.street) Fission omits this since it is on the market
Superuser (com.noshufou.android.su) Downloaded latest version from market, so I am notified of updates
Terminal Emulator (jackpal.androidterm)
Titanium Backup (com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup)
Titanium Backup Pro (com.keramidas.TitaniumBackupPro)
Voice Search (com.google.android.voicesearch) Fission omits this since it is on the market
YouTube (com.google.android.youtube) Fission omits this since it is on the market
Update: Apps I've tried based on suggestions and think that I will stick with (unless I see something better) will be added to the above list, in bold.
Handcent sms. Best text messaging app out there and its free. Launcherpro is also awesome.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
i would get a cpu control app like setcpu, or if you want to overclock go with droid overclock by jrummy, i personally cant use an android phone without fancy widget. i also noticed that there wasnt an xda app in there

I have it, and love it as well
Here's some worth checking out:
Google Voice: Google Voice will transcribe your voicemails to text, store them on the web, make them searchable, and allow you to archive them forever. Single most amazing thing to happen to phones since they got data connections. Ignore the rest of this list and get google voice. It's worth the few minutes of setup time.
qik: You can stream video live to the web. I haven't really found a great use for it, but how cool is that?
Dropbox: If you don't use Dropbox on your PC, that's a whole other story I need to tell you about, but there's an app for your android. It syncs your data to the cloud and keeps all your computers in sync with the newest versions.
Google Sky Map: Do you see a constellation? Hold your phone at arms length in front of the stars in question and google sky map will tell you their names, the name of the constellation, and other cool stuff. It's one of those you have to see it to believe it.
Jorte is a much better calendar than the default one. You can put much more useful widgets on the desktop and see the names of your events when you're in monthly or weekly views.
ADW is an awesome launcher (I use it), but Launcher Pro is probably cool too.
Get your bank's mobile banking app. Super useful.
Verizon has an app that shows you your minutes used, txts sent, and data downloaded.
Cool games:
Rocket Bunnies
Mechanics Touch
Robo Defense
Repilica Island
Air Control
Buka
Radiant
Totemo
Feedback on the suggestions: (Updated)
Its really not clear what Handcent SMS gets me over the default provider, especially since I don't use SMS very much. Also if I do decide to go Google Voice in the future, said app becomes somewhat moot, since AIUI only the GV app works well with GV's SMS.
ADW Launcher EX looks interesting. I do have some reservations though. I remember that early on all replacement launchers had issues that varied from effectively locking you out of the phone by breaking (with the breakage surviving restarts), through to eating up battery like crazy. Have those all been pretty well resolved?
The XDA-Developers app has ads, and more importantly does not seem to let me refer back to older posts while composing.
I'm not sure what to make of Dolphin HD. It has ads unless you buy a license, but those ads are hidden away in places like the bookmarks management screen (while the bookmarks sidebar is what you use most of the time). It does support downloading any file even if no app for the format is installed. On the other hand functionality like a password manager is only available in an add-on (and the password manager one is a paid add-on).
I've used both adw and launcher pro, I loved adw but I just didn't find it as stable or as smooth as launcher pro, so I stayed with launcher pro, just a little input for your consideration
Sent from my WICKED FAST Droid 2 Global with fission using XDA app
I'm sure there is someone who will disagree, but I really like Dolphin HD browser. It may be a hair slower than some other browsers, but I really like the bookmarks bar on the left side.

Some other apps I've found are the miui music app (best music player app I've found) and also the miren browser from the miui rom. Worth checking out and they are free.

chompSMS over Handcent for me. Main reason for these is the popup notifications. Saves me from turning on screen, unlocking, dragging down status bar, tapping message, and then being able to read it. Auto lights up screen (20 sec configurable for me) and opens a pop-up window, you can instant-reply there too. Oh and the quick-compose, I map that through the LauncherPro activities feature to search button + P to instantly start composing an SMS.
andChat if you ever need irc
tTorrent Lite looks nice haven't used it just have it installed
K-9 Mail much better than gmail (gmail hogs precious vertical viewing area when in landscape mode)
GTask, enable tasks in google labs on your gmail (if this is still a labs feature and not official now).
MusicJunk: I won't spoil this one for you.
I'd say that's it.
I actually like go sms, its very customizable and has the pop ups like chomp, although I disable them from time to time. And I also found hancent a little buggy, sometimes it wouldn't send my messages, go sms sends them very fast, almost as soon as I hit send.

IMO, Go SMS, like most apps, uses too much vertical space. Who needs half an inch for a message ? I wish more would do it like k-9 mail and just make it like 1/4th inch high at the max.
I don't use very many social networking apps and mainly use my phone for media purposes aside from some of the more popular news type apps like Tapatalk, Pulse news reader and stuff here are a few you may be interested in:
Media Apps:
BeyondPod - If you like podcasts this app is amazing. Doggcatcher is pretty good also, but I simply prefer the more minimalist style of BeyondPod.
iSyncr - if you want to sync music from itunes to your phone
PlayerPro - imo this is the best music player for android hands down. its very customizable and has a ton of options and features. If you are interested in trying it check out the Sens skin for it.
RockPlayer - plays literally any video format. Eventually I hope to move to vPlayer, but that isn't all that stable on the Droid 2/X phones atm.
XiiaLive - a shoutcast streaming player with a pretty good interface. I think Winamp may also stream as well.
System/Widget Apps:
LauncherPro - other people have mentioned it. To clarify I have never had a reboot lock problem or any battery drain from it and I have been using it since I got my droid 2 back in the summer (4-5+ months), so I can confidently say it is more than stable and very fast.
Volume Toggle (Free or Pro) - I have been using free for months. Its similar to AudioManager except superior in every way. I am fairly sure it works with system change events in the latest versions of it. If nothing else give it a shot. It has a nice widget you can tap to change profiles and can auto-profile things like the headset. The ads in the free version are so minimal you wouldn't notice them as they only exist down in the profile creation screens so you wouldn't see them 9/10 days.
SimiClock - A great homescreen widget with date/time/weather and a super minimalistic look.
Launch-X (Free or pro) - A pretty neat launcher widget with a decent amount of customization.
Other Interesting Apps:
TippyTipper - easy tip calculator
Urbanspoon - find good places to eat fast!
psx4droid- Play playstation games on your phone
An app you will probably never hear of:
SimplyNoise - A White noise generator. It really helps me when studying and/or programming. Its basically a version of the website http://www.simplynoise.com/ stuffed into a concise little app. Its kinda weird, but I really like it!
swift key
its a keyboard with the capability of predicting the next word you're going to write and it works very well with the physical keyboard (the whole purpose of owning a droid 2 lol) it is a paid app but it is so worth it
First of all.. the moderators can move this to another section if this isn't the correct place to be posting this...
I have been waiting for the Milestone 2 section to pop up to ask this... but I guess that might take a little longer...
I'm using the stock ROM from Motorola Froyo 2.2.. My phone is rooted though... Not a big fan of BLUR for obvious reasons.. (Angdroid .. we are waiting for ur custom ROM eagerly to get rid of BLUR.. kudos to u bro to help us out)
So I want some recommendations on the apps that I should use for the list below. I'm using some apps but since the android world in full of awesome apps.. I just wanted to make sure that I'm using the best of the best..
I would really appreciate if someone can give a reason as to why I should NOT use a particular app..
Task Killer - _________ (using Avanced task killer)
Alarm & Timer - ________ (using stock) (hopefully nothing fancy is necessary here)
File Manager - _________(ASTRO)
Calendar - ___________ (using stock)
Dictionary - __________ (required. Preferably offline)
Camera - ___________ (using stock)
Camcorder - __________ (using stock)
Contacts - __________ (using stock)
Dialler - ___________ (using stock)
Office app - _________ (got Quickoffice as stock)
Browser - ___________ (Dolphin HD and Opera Mini)
Social Networking - _________ (I only use Facebook and I have got the official App)
Picture Gallery - ________ (Got QuickPic.. looking for something a little more fancy here)
Music Player - ___________ (got stock n WinAmp)
Text Messaging - __________ (Stock)
Exchange - ____________ (heard a lot about Exchange by Touchdown)
Launcher - ______________ (using Launcher Pro)
Other than that I have Google Goggles, Google Sky Maps, Google Maps, SetCPU, XDA app n Youtube..
One more thing, I would really appreciate if someone can suggest apps (especially launcher) which can give me better battery life..
Would also appreciate any interesting app that I'm missing..
Thanks in advance for your suggestions..
You don't need a task killer. FroYo is designed to handle running apps optimally and a task killer just gets in the way of doing that.
okay... thanks for tht....
Any other suggestions??
Well I keep advanced task killer froyo in case an app starts acting up and I need to kill it. I never kill everything though.
A great music player is miui music. Very good ui, downloads lyrics and album artwork free.
Miren web browser from the miui rom is also great.
Widgetlocker is nice. Widgets on your lockscreen and its only $1.
Launcherpro is a great home replacement to get ride of the blur launcher. Its super smooth and snappy. Paid version has some nice widgets.
Hope you find this helpful.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Thanks.. I'll try out miui music and miren browser.. Not to keen on keeping widgets on lock screen, so would keep away from Widgetlocker..
Have tried both Launcher Pro and ADWlauncher... Launcher Pro is super snappy... but ADWlauncher is catching up fast... Plus it has got loads of themes.. I cant decide between the two at the moment.. I guess battery consideration will dictate terms there....
More suggestions are welcome...
Root Explorer is a good file manager because it gives you access to your /system folder so you can eliminate those annoying camera shutter sounds. It costs $10.

Fissiom Rom Manager
Google Goggles (Take pictures of things and automagically googles them)

XDA app of course
Just a few apps I use on my phone.
Thanks Mike for the list..
I do have Ad Free, Angry Birds, Facebook, Google Goggles n XDA apps..
Will give compass a try (donno how useful it is for me though).. CNET news and Google earth also seem to be good options...
About Droid overclock.. I did try Milestone overclock n was able to overclock my phone to 1300 MHz.. but my battery doesnt seem to last long (even without overclocking it hardly lasts a day).. Do u guys have a similar issue without battery?? If yes, can you suggest some ways to conserve it??

Im guessing since you have the Milestone 2 you prolly don't have it ROMed which I dont think you can at this point and time. There in lies your problem, the MotoBlur absolutely HATES batterys. Before I ROMed my phone I could barely last a day with mild useage, I can now last at least a day and a half. With overclocked =P.
To conserve use WiFi whenever possible. Put the screen brightness as low as you can tolerate it. If you don't mind disconnect your facebook account from your phone (That is constantly pulling data which is a main cause of battery drain).
Also, If you just got the phone I'm sure you are using it a ton which may drop off as time goes on (Once you get used to having this amazing mini computer in your pocket lol) which will drop the battery usage that display uses.
I also use "Data counter widget" because the native data counter bonkers :-(
There are Engadget, xda and Facebook apps in the store.
For internet tethering I use PdaNet - great app!
PowerAMP is my favorite music player. Haven't played much with it though.
QuickDic as dictionary.
QuickPic is okay, I use native Gallery.
Shakespeare App is great. All his books for free!
Widgetsoid to create my own widgets. Like it alot.
As for games I'm currently looking for a strong mills game. I have downloaded all mills game from the store but they all suck. Way too easy. The same for "Stratego" clone Legions...nice, but way too easy...
iPhone has a better choice for apps...really sucks

But I dont think we Milestone 2 users are gonna see a custom ROM anytime soon... though m keeping my fingers crossed...
@oTToToTenTanz: Data counter is a good suggestion.. m nt too keen on games (except for angry birds) as I use my PSP for that...
Apps that work:
Angry Birds
ADWLauncher EX
Audio Manager Pro
Battery Monitor Widget
Beautiful Widgets
Documents to Go
Dropbox
Dolphin Browser HD
System Info Pro
Tapatalk Pro
Rockplayer
Root Explorer
Apps that don't work:
Flash
Swype
Alot of games are not working. The resolution is all jacked up.
+1, I approve this thread. Let's hear some more apps that do/don't work.
Only thing that hasnt worked for me is USA Today.
Some look ridiculous in 10" of glory, but they do work...lol
Had some force closes with Dolphin HD but overall it works. Also had some force closes with pandora but again it works. Can't find Tango in the market either and since apparently only people with a Xoom can video chat on gtalk, I have nobody that I can actually video chat with yet until Skype comes out lol.
sling player works, but it is super slow and the resolution is not that great. i will try over wifi in a little while, but i think it needs to be updated by sling for 3.0.
my dinc in the same spot is great with sling running.
Full Exchange sync works:
E-mail
Contacts
Calendar
Barcode Scanner
Google Earth
ES File Explorer
Gensoid Lite (tested with Sonic the Hedgehog 2)
Google Sky Map
Homerun Battle 3D
RockPlayer Lite
SNesoid Lite (tested with Super Mario World)
Tank Hero
Tricorder
X Construction
That's all I've installed so far. I noticed that on the Android Market (which immediately updated as soon as I opened it) has a section devoted to Tablet Apps. Kinda sad to see there aren't very many yet, but I'm sure that will change soon.
nba league pass and game time works
Zenonia works, and actually scales very well in my opinion.
Also,
Astro
Shazam
Gun Bros
Documents to Go
And I wish I could find google body.
I'm having a problem now with the market. Everything downloads but then it doesn't install successfully. I restarted my xoom but still no go.

I just did using wii controller IME from the market. Takes a little playing with the settings in nesoid but it runs great and really fills the screen well.
Thanks for letting me know, I think that's the best way to entice mid 20's to early 30 year old people. "Look, I know your iSomething is awesome, but I just downloaded two apps and I'm playing nes and snes games with a wiimote, fo free."
Touchdown
Touchdown for Exchange, the new tablet version, is an incredibly awesome exchange mail solution. Works as well as desktop outlook, with mail, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes all available in a great windowed format.
spare parts is working, it allows unoptimize apps to run full screen on the xoom/galaxy tab.
* 1. Download “Spare Parts” application from Android Market and install it. If you visit us from the Galaxy Tab, follow this link : Spare Parts
* 2. Launch “Spare Parts” and scroll down to “Compability Mode”. Un-tick the box and tick it back.
* 3. Reboot the Galaxy Tab.
* 4. Launch “Spare Parts” again, scroll down to “Compatibility Mode” and un-tick the box.
* 5. Reboot the Galaxy Tab.
* 6. Congratulations. Your apps are displayed in full screen!

I have both Angry Birds from the Amazon app store. Later tonight after work Ill be checking some of these out. I havent heard of a few of them.
Well I like many of the ones that have already been mentioned but here is my list:
Used daily:
minimalistic text
scrollable news widget
Jorte
facebook for android
xda
yammer
finance (google)
amazon app store (as mentioned for free apps daily)
the weather channel
ADW (installed with CM7)
ADW Notifier (great addition to ADW to put hte bubble on gmail )
Gmail
Google Voice
Other apps that I use once in a while:
Movies (flixter)
TV Guide
IMDB
Score Mobile
SyncMyPics (only when running ASOP, HTC's People app does a great job with this on its own).
My Verizon
ASTRO Browser
Google Maps/ Street view/ Navigation
Games that I have played with (I am not a gamer so others probably have better picks):
Super Dynamite fishing (because of Opening fishing this past weekend this is my top pick )
Angreybirds (all)
Doodle Jump
Majesty (probably best app of the day from amazon that I got)
world series poker
LOL so after looking through my apps I have a TON that I have never even started... I guess I would say get amazon to get the free ones but try them to see if you like them LOL
have to go back and try a bunch of these now.
SoBBie
wave launcher and circlelauncher are a couple of really nice folder type widgets.
