Hi
I'm new to forum and if this is not the right to ask this question, my apologies.
I'm about to buy an HD2 but I have these questions about GPS (I'm new to HTC and GPS):
- Does it support turn-by-turn voice guided GPS?
- Is it possible install the maps in the memory or card and use it offline?
- Is any kind of subscription needed to use the GPS?
Btw, I plan to use the GPS in Southern Europe, if that matters.
Thanks.
Hi, turn by turn is supported by CoPilot Live which is provided as a free trial (in most if not all countries it is sold in I believe). This is subject to a subscription should you decide to continue using it (£27 in the UK). Other products are available I'm sure. Turn by turn is not supported in europe on the free Google Maps as far as I am aware.
Copilot is a one-off purchase for turn-by-turn navigation, a yearly subscription is required for traffic. Other options include Navigon, Destinator, TomTom, NDrive, iGO8 with features varying between each program. Best to visit each vendor's site and compare their capabilities. And all of them can be used offline with maps stored on the memory card, in some cases the program comes pre-installed on a card and cant be changed.

Hey i have looked around and cant seem to find a GPS app for the Diamond that doesnt take up 2G of space. Post GPS apps that you would suggest if you dont mind. Thank you!
Google Maps?
They don't have maps preloaded like tomtom/garmin/igo...
which kind? for navigation with maps
or
just position coordinates?
If you just want to get your coordinates you could use HTC gps tool its very small .
If you need street navigation, then most of the apps arent that big... but maps are! So only chance to get them smaller is to only install your own country map or smaller. I once heared theres a garmin version where you could even just download the needed parts but I dont know if this is really worth the trouble.... 4gb are more than big enough for me ^^... especially if navigation uses only about 300mb
2 gigs maaaay if you install ALL maps ? I use navigon only with german map and its about 334mb (software + map)

Where abouts in the world are you? Not all GPS programmes have maps for all parts of the world, so your choice will depend upon where you are. As other posts have said it is the maps not the software that takes the space. So you can get regional maps rather than full continent ones. For example Tom Tom sell all of Europe, or just particular countries, and all of the USA or just regions.
Otherwise you are stuck with using software that downloads the maps as and when you need them. Google is a free example, but many phone companies now have theri own software that does that and which you pay a monthly fee to use. Google really is just maps rather than true navigational (turn by turn) software, but the phone companies' ones are fully featured. But if you do it that way it can get VERY expensive in download costs unless you have a data includive contract. Even then if you are roaming out of area (just when you need the maps) it can cost a fortune
I live in Canada.
iGo8 here. Application with Canada contents takes approximately 400mb of storage.
Apologies if this is in the wrong section, not sure where to post it.
Anyway, does you guys know which is the best software for the Touch HD?
I've heard TomTom Navigator 7 seems to work really well (but I can't find it on their website) and that Garmin has lag issues.
I currently have CoPilot, which I was really happy with on my previous phone (XDA Orbit 2), however because of the Touch HD's resolution, CoPilot is all blurry as it tries to fill the screen.
Any suggestions, or ideas on getting Copilot working fine?
Thanks,
Ashley
Personally ive used tomtom from my old N70 upto the HD and its great.
Search the forums for stuff relating to tomtom
I would suggest you check with CoPilot as they now list HD as compatible and probably have a new version.
I personally use Route66 which is very good and does not need any special Tweaks, like TT, etc.
I would also suggest to search this forum as there are several Threads that deal exactly with your question.
you could also try navigon mn7, thee's a free 30days trial available on their website... i really like it, however to run it on the hd you have to do some tweaking (exchange 3 files), which is described in the corresponding thread
Do I need data service to use the GPS?
I apologize for my ignorance question, but let's say I get one of the softwares, (tomtom) on my HD. After that do I need a data service to work on the GPS or it can work by itself ?
Data is not required for them because they use space on your SD card to hold the maps unlike google maps which downloads the maps as necessary.
My tomtom map of US and Canada takes up 800mb of my SD card.
Tomtom 7.910.9185 comes with a VGA version so it looks perfect on the HD.

That's correct. BUT:
1. You do need a good size SD card - 2 gig is really a minimum as the navigation maps typically are around 1 gig
2. Most of the navigation apps do want to access the internet (normally you can disable that) so that the app can check for updates and ALSO useful stuff like POIs or traffic updates.
I have TTN7, Navngo iGo8 and Copilot installed on my THD.
Though it's the easiest to use, I rarely use TTN7 because their "Supported Devices" policy meant that they effectively 'stole' 9 months of my Traffic subscription when I upgraded to the THD and wouldn't let me activate any new maps I would have purchased - stupid really as TTN7 works beautifully on my THD and they could have got £80 out of me. I have similar problems with them with my SPV M3100 but I managed to beat them into submission in the end, but it took a full 2 months of fighting. I'll not be advising my parents to replace their dying TTOne V1 with another TT unit either - there goes another £150! Traffic and other value added services (Weather, Buddies are supplied via GPRS/3G.
iGo8 is only supplied on a 2GB SD card and is tied to it so there's no room available for any other stuff (media, etc.) which may not be a problem when you have ready access to the SD card slot but is utterly STUPID in my opinion for the THD where you'll have to constantly be taking the back cover on and off. Natively it does not appear to come with a 800x480 skin for the THD either. It is possible to move it off the SD card but then it becomes a ***** to set up and doesn't seem to store any of the setting changes you make from the menus. It doesn't have full postcode addressing, is a bit of a learning curve to use and perhaps isn't that intuitive. Traffic is supplied via TMC (requires receiver but otherwise free in the UK) and other services are limited. Terrain awareness is interesting when you get into hilly areas as are 3D buildings when you get into populous areas. All in all a bit of a geek's app.
Copilot I would say sits beween the two. Not as easy to use and customisable as TTN but not as much of a head-fit as iGo. It comes on CD (or download for the THD version) so you can use whichever SD card you like, does have full postcode addressing and traffic is supplied via GPRS/3G + subscription (half the price of TT too). The customer service team get a thumbs up from me too - over and above those 'A*!$HOLES' at TT (my opinion and not necessarily the opinion of the Xda-Developers team). Other value added services that are offered by TT are lacking. The THD version of Copilot does not come with, and I believe is incompatible with, the Copilot Central PC app.
All are supported by the defacto Speed Camera Database from PocketGPSWorld (other databases may be available! ).
I hope this has been of some help.
I find that TT7 on my HD is very reliable but basic while mobile navigator is far better quality but not very reliable atm (real view is amazing, but everytime it comes up it throws an error). Once I get mobile navigator to play nice, I think it would be the best navigator for the HD
Igo8
I have a garmin nvi in my car but I rather use my HD with Igo8 when on foot. used it in keacow, Poland last week and loved the buildings thats are added to the map
Halo all,
I'm searching for a compatible navigation software for my new Rhodium (T-Mobile Germany). Important is that I need a map of USA.
All my favorites (Navigon, TomTom) do not offer a map of USA preferably in Germany.
Any tips for me?
Thanks
Pascal
I'm not sure I understand your question. 've never used Navigon, but I certainly know that TomTom sells maps of the USA. Are you saying that you are having difficulty finding out where to purchase these maps from Germany?
Yes, in all german online shops there is no Map of USA.
you could try getting the igo8 standard euro version
http://navngo.com/pages/global/eng/igo_8_description
then get the us map as an extra through
https://www.naviextras.com
'nav-n-go igo8' is known as a nng device on the navieextras site
I've tried Navigon - don't remember why I didn't like it but I ditched it. I have both Garmin and TomTom - both of which I assure you you can get USA maps for (I have them so I know its possible). As for which is the best... Eh... Your mileage may vary. I'm currently in love with the features of Garmin but the positional lag is worse in Garmin than TomTom... I think either one would suit you well, but I'd guess TomTom has a wider array of maps available.
How about CoPilot Live?
At least in the USA, I had the option to buy all of the maps for Copilot Live 8, and not just the North America maps.

I used Iguidance 2009, it comes with an 8Gb card that is tied to the software. If you don't mind using this card, it seems to work pretty well - and it comes with a full set of USA maps.

What is the best software to use that doesnt require cell service. Including map updates.
I use copilot live 8...
$30.00...and it does not need a data signal as the maps are stored on your SD card.
For updates, im sure you can hook up to a wifi signal...or, you can download the Copilot Desktop application and sync maps/voices/updates to your phone that way.
I do have Copilot Live 8 also, so far it's great and the graphics are nicely with turn by turn navigation.
iGO 8 and TomTom
iGO8 have the option of installing individual city map! save alot of space TT have to put the whole NA map on it .. yikes!
I use GARMIN LOVE IT
I also use Garmin, love the lack of subscription needed to do internet searches for nearby places, unlike most of the others. So, you never have to worry about the locations being out of date.
Does Garmin running well with HD2 ? i had Garmin XT on my Satio (yes i still love that phone ) and it do the recalculating alot, with tomtom,Sygic they are fine no recalculation. Therefore, i dont want to put Garmin on my HD2
are any of these gps's free?

MS' Bing app (which is free) now has turn-by-turn GPS nav, but it requires cell data service.

I use Navicomputer on my Tytn II, but it seems to also work on the HTC HD2 too (according to other people posting). Navicomputer uses the Open Street Maps and can do this online or you can download them and use it when there is no connection (I do this when I travel outside the US).

You can't do a search for an address when in Offline Mode. Can you?
I tried NaviComputer, and looks like its only good for looking at where you are in the map and not for it to tell you where you should go. And ofcourse for tracking your hiking trail (which it is meant for).
What is the best GPS program (ie. Garmin, tomtom, etc, etc) to use with the T-mobile version of HD2 for North America (mainly Canada.... especially, West coast B.C.)?
iGO8 with latest maps from Navitel. Covered all states (+islands) and Canada, detailed landscape and POI(even phone # for restaurants) and smart routing (compare with crazy coPilot).
When I go to their site, I see lots of entries for European versions but no US version. Can you provide a link to a US version of IGO8 or is this something where we have to cobble the maps together with one of the IGO8 European versions?
Sorry if this question is dumb or "obvious" but I could not figure how to install IGO8 so am using Copilot.
Mod Edit: Warez are not allowed on this site. Do that again, and you will be banned. First and last warning.
thats not free is it?
What do you mean?
Hands down, iGo Primo. I've used Garmin and Copilot, and none of them were as good as iGo Primo.
i use bing.. its free.
Is bing currently for the US only now at this point? I'm using now in here (maryland) but not sure or not if it would work in BC... It's free though.. download the updated version and try it.
