Just got my Xperia X1 - XPERIA X1 General

I have to say that after a day of fooling around i'm loving this phone.
The keyboard is great! I was a little worried about it after reading about so many issues people were having with how tactile the buttons were but i think the amount of push in them is just right.
(my only issue is the lack of directional buttons on the keyboard for emulators)
Speakinf of emulators, I just finished a session of Final Fantasy 8! The phone lags a little bit when there is alot going on but otherwise its TOTALLY playable.
I'm hesitant about going online even WITH my wifi set up as I think programs on the phone default to 3G connections if they are available and roaming charges are extraordinarally high with my plan.
If anyone knows a program that can deny 3G and 2G connections when browsing id love to hear about it

Search the forum for the NODATA app. It'll disable GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSPDA connectivity

if you have a wi-fi connection it shouldnt trigger 3g data to be used, but to be on the safe search for the nodata app

Thanks for the help guys, that app does exactly what I wanted
I think I've hit my first snag. I plugged in the xperia and the charging LEDs came on. I turned the phone back on and turned them (LEDs while charging) off. (I also changed the two softkeys to go to messaging and file manager) but after turning the phone back off the LEDs continue to display :S
I went back into setting and sure enough the settings are as I left them, they just have no effect, the softkeys also are GOING where I want them to, but as soon as I reboot they go back to calender and contacts

I think because the only way for you to know the phone is charging while its off is the LEDs the setting only applies while the phone is on... It's probably programmed into the bootloader or something...
also for the softkeys, i think this probably a bug, i'm not sure, i assume your on the stock rom? if you wish to stay that way then thats fine, but using a custom rom will really boost your experience! remember if you're going to do this, to Hard-SPL and read up on the process through the stickies on the Rom development sub-forum!
If you want to stay stock then simple make sure your on the latest R3A Rom release via SEUS (update service)!

For keyboard arrows you can use main D-pad.

Great choice OP.
Check these apps:
AE Button Plus - It lets you map the soft keys to anything you like with several functions each. I got 4 actions on each button (single press, double, tripple and long). It lets you controll everytihng without the touchscreen.
SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 + SPB News and SPB Weather + SPB Wireless Monitor . It turns the phone to a completely different device. The improvement is manifold.
WK Task - superior task manager and launcher.
Resco Today Plug-in - Arange and launch apps.
Homescreen ++ - task manager, taskbar icons, cpu speed monitor, ram monitor, phone temperature monitor, battery drain monitor.
Just to start you off .

Thanks for the tips, the resco suite added alot of cool things and im glad i made that download.
NoDataInRoaming is a great app!
Ive currently got my softkeys working again (had to reinstall sdktools *shugs*)
otherwise everything is working GREAT!
ive found that button mapping for some of the keys in FPSEce doesnt work very well as the default functionality of those keys stay, such as the blue key but thanks all for the tips.
@Jonny4911 I'm going to be making the shift when android is more stable on the device. as it is now the phone is working great for me and apart from a couple of slowdowns during taxing use i couldnt be happier

Anyone tried Pontui ?

http://pointui.com/Home.aspx
Its free and looks pretty cool... gonna install it when i get home (no cables here) if anyone has a play before the end of the day i'd appreciate opinions before i do the deed myself!
mark
Well, i gave it a try yesterday on my WM5 wizard.
Its overall look and feel is really quite impressive. All the animations are unbelivably smooth, even without any overclocking. The app is finger-friendly, but i dislike list scrolling method they used - it's not like the one in fTouchflo, or iContact, where you scroll the list as if it was a physical object and moves in sync with the finger sweeping the screen, but instead the list moves in the direction of the sweep: if you put your finger on the screen and move it down a bit, the list will start scrolling down at constant speed. if you move finger farther down, it will accelerate and again keep constant speed if finger is still. if you move finger up, it will slow down, move it u even farther, ant the list will reverse direction and scroll up. It's not very intuitive, not to mention that it's really hard to use to precisely scroll long lists. If they changed this one thing, the overall fell of the program would improve significantly.
Beside that UI is clean and well designed, gives you quick access to start menu, settings (control panel, wifi, BT, GSM module, sound volume), tasks, calendar, appointments and clock, it also has some customizable menus for accessing frequently used software.
The downside is that it replaces your Today screen, so you won't be able to use your favorite Today plugins.
Overall, it's worth a try, especially for a user who just wants a phone with a simple, yet really good-looking interface. More advanced users who like to be able to customize everything might find this a bit limiting.
Overall, the program really has huge potential, and let's not forget that it's just the first public version. It will certainly improve over time. I'd recommend giving it a try, just be aware that there are some uninstallation issues read the tread on pointUI forums for more info, or if you have something like SPB backup or other software that does FULL device backup, use it and if something goes wrong, simply HR the device.
By the way:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355961&page=5
Given it a try, and was impressed by the smooth flowing interactive menu's. But I find its quicker and easier to use SPB Shell (yes it looks basic in comparison but its straight forward and easily customised) and have therefore unistalled the software. However do not be put off by my comments, give it a go.
tange.
prior to my phone breaking (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=284 solutions on a postcard please) i used this UI for a few days and throught it was pretty cool. theres deffo a learning curve as some of the apps are located in strange places but overall i was very happy with it.
Impressive, but very bad support for non-English OS.
Give it time. Its a brand new and revolutionary program and those guys are doin it all in their free time so you got to give them time.
I'm running this on my wizard, Tried it and I liked it enough that I won't leave it alone.
Runs fast on my wizard, thumb approved, things are organized a little funny but after a day of using it everything is cool, I haven't looked yet but I would like to custom the 4 icons that lauch programs and some things are linked incorrectly but overall i'm impressed with the program out of box and I hope development keeps up.
i just wanted to ask
does the weather application on PointUI cost... if so.. .does any1 no how much
thanks in advance
weather is free
i think they get their weather info from yahoo/weather channel, free
PontUI
Been using this for 3 days now and I love it. This and pocketCM with a the pontUI skin is amazing. Also the Iphone a like skin works well.
The main screen is great with the middle ribbon allowing really smooth action to access Analogue clock, digital clock, Calender, Tasks, Local weather and appointments.
Main screen top contains from left to right; Lock, signal meter Carrier info, Volume, Battery and Cog (settings).
You can lock the device on lock icon, hit the signal icon and the screen flip animates to show all connections settings (Flight mode, phone status wifi things like that) Hit the Speaker Icaon and you can adjust phone and speaker volumes as well as mute. hit the battery icon (which show bat level) and you can see battery life and go to power settings and backlight settings (well I can't but hey it's a beta) Hit the Cog and too many settings to list but among them is update feature so you can get the latest version straight to your device, you can also exit PontUI Home from here.
You have four icon down the bottom of the main screen which are, left to right; phone icon for call history list, tap it then swipe right on a name to call or sms them. Envelope icon press this to go to your email account (can choose which one through new registry string) next is SMS icon tap it to go to standard SMS app. Then last is the WM Icon, tap to go to windows media player (can choose which one through new registry string).
There is also a bar with an arrow down the bottom which you tap this then gives you four options; New, from which you can create new Email, SMS, MMS, Appointment, task, document or spreadsheet.
Favourites which shows all apps in the start menu folder. Applications which allows to to smoothly scroll through all installed apps and Currently running which does what it says on the tin.
As this App evolves i'm sure these menus will become nicely configurable.
I 'm really loving this App and it's only BETA. I'm running HTC Trinity (orange M700) and it's just sooo smooth. I tried Freestyl, which is good and I've been following, but when I tried this, I was blown away.
It's kind of nice to have an App that seems to integerate well with the phone rather than being a kind of clucky overlay that you can tell isn't meant to be there.
I urge you all to try it and see what you think.
Cheers all.
Logicalstep
loving it
What i think they can improve are:
1 make the hardware buttons to work, now i can't take a picture, record any sound, or change the volume with the h-buttons.
2 a contacts app will be nice and as well a favorite contacts like the htc home
3 a way to close app on the currently running menu
4 a little bigger back button or more to the left cause when i try to pres the back button with the tumb i usually had to try 2 or 3 times couse is really near to the border.
finaly a way to select favorite app that don’t depend of the start menu
don’t get me wrong i think that app is amazing but this 5 thing will make it perfect to me
I am loving Pointui!

Application for managing memory hungry programs?

Although I am usually very wary of using memory hungry apps there are a few 'must haves' for me such as MS Voice Command. I have also installed SPB Menu 2.0 and it is beautiful to play with but my memory drops ridiclously with this app - sometimes up to 10mb and its memory usage seems to grow continually until I soft reset.
So I was wondering whether it was possible to mimic the on/off function of these apps with a button push?
With MSVC there is a tick box in the settings to enable/disable and recently I have been turning it off when not needed to improve memory but would love to find a way to map this function to a hardware button. I cant even find a reg value to turn it on/off so really dont know where to start.
I will almost certainly end up removing SPB Menu as I have done with previous versions but I do like the functionaity and love the look and feel so it would be cool to be able to find a way to put it to sleep with a button push too.
Any ideas? Or has this been done before and I just havent come across it?
At the moment I use memmaid for managing memory but its always a manual job!

so who like the phone so far...

Pros.... what they said
For the most part it is a great phone
Cons
No root access with ADB
No Shell
No File Manager
No SSHD
The fun is great. You have to realized that whatever is missing will be develop in the next couple of months. Now grading android system -> The best phone I've ever had by far, and I have been to lots and lots of Smarts phones....
Addressing some of the cons
Video Player: Available on market, but very, very limited (i miss tcpmp)
Setting Wallpaper: While ur on the Home screen, press the Menu button, wallpaper will be a selectable option
Editing Bookmarks: Open your browser, then press the Menu button, select Bookmarks, on the bookmarks screen, press and hold on the bookmark u want to edit until a screen pops up. Edit bookmark is there.
Clock on Home screen: to move it, just press and hold on the clock until it 'detaches' from the home screen.
to delete it, press and hold until it detaches from the screen then move it to your tab bar which you'll notice changed from an arrow to a trash bin.
to add one, while on the home screen, press the Menu button, select Add, Widget, Clock. then just place it wherever u want.
Something i had an issue with that i posted elsewhere was an rss reader. Google has one on its homepage, ur looking for Reader. Just sign-in and setup your links. Hopefully this'll help some people.
I've got the same pro's and con's as everyone else. I really like this phone much more then my TYTN II. I might have had a bunk TYTN though.
I'm missing the software keyboard, sim contact manager, and file explorer from WM phones though.
Otherwise I'm happy that I drove a long way to get this phone.
Hello fellow G1 users.
Ever since the news about OS came a while back I have been sold on android (well it’s potential).
There is obviously a software shortage… however, the community and google will fill the gaps with time, I think.
One big issue I have the battery capacity.
I would like to hear from you guys/girls:
What have you done to make the battery last longer?
Here are some of the things I have done (currently testing this configuration)
1. Stopped sync on all items….. I only kept calendar (sharing it with my wife)
2. Stopped using the gmail app. Instead I setup all of my email accounts via second email app with all POP (not IMAP <- drains battery like crazy) where I can control frequency with which the app checks mail (10-15 min apart for me).
3. turned off location service from GPS and network towers because I think one these are invoked, they do not turn off
4. Last: the usual…. Screen time out to shortest timeout and screen brightness to lowest comfortable level for me.

Pros: pretty good v1 Android OS, nice touch screen, fast (almost no lag), decent 3G speed, pretty good marketplace, room for growth
Cons: no virtual keyboard, need full BT profiles, no desktop sync, no task manager, no file manager, no 3.5mm headphone jack, no video recording
now that i seen everyone elses views time for me
ok i love this phone but i still carry around m dash as a picture/video recorder
the camera on the g1 sucks to me especially on how long it takes to snap
in my opinion my dash takes better pictures.
the battery definately sux nomore words about it lol

I've heard everyone complaining about the battery life and while its not the greatest I don't think its as horrible as everyone makes it out to be. Batt lasted me 12 hours yesterday with heavy internet use!

phone keypad

does anyone know how to set the phone keypad as default as opposed to keep reverting back to qwerty keypad everytime? also does minimizing programs still use a lot of battery? if so is these a application so when you press the x button its exits the program rather than minimize?
anyone? thanks

On my phone, if I chose keypad, it stays that way until i change it back.
Minimized apps drains battery and may slow down your phone (it takes a lot to slow HD2 down.. but anyway)
You can install an Taskmanager from this forum, for instance this one:
e-Natives Showcase 1.1.0 - Finger Friendly Task Switcher ---- Official Thread
my key pad keeps reverting back to qwerty still. any ideals?
Minimized apps can drain battery, but most don't. Most applications need user interaction before they do anything. Excel, for example, just sits there and does absolutely nothing if you don't use it. That won't use battery. Anything that does things in the background, like polling system states (screen on, rotation, waiting for screen gestures etc..), they will use the battery. It basically depends what application it is, but most do not.
Install the task manager from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584415
When you open it on the home page you can go into settings and choose between apps minimizing or closing when you press the X.
@ boro22, i have the same problem with the phone keypad and cannot find a solution.... have you found one yet?
whiltst on the subject of the phone keypad can someone tell me how i can the keys to silent

(GUIDE) Tap to wake Any Samsung Device! (no Root)

this is a guide for Samsung mobile phones who'd like the function of LG tap to wake\lock the screen
using only apps and nova launcher prime.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su2WwTfH-y0
Tap to Wake/Lock screen Guide is for Samsung Amoled device Only\for all any device with amoled screen/
things you need to know before we start -
you'll have to use Nova Launcher Prime (can be purchased trough the free version) as your primary launcher.
set up your nova launcher prime as your default launcher and continue to the next step
The next step we will have to use two applications-
The first is
Screen Off And Lock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...e/apps/details?id=tecnology.angs.knockr&hl=en...
Once you've installed it open up the application there are things set up and its easy to get confused,
set up the settings like i did one by one.
When you first open the app it will take you trough a small tutorial that will require you to create a simple Knock Code (Were going to remove this one later on)
When you're done you'll be taken to settings under the "Gestures Settings" menu -
all options are marked to do "Nothing" except
Double Tap - set it to Screen On
swipe right in the app to Knocks Settings - Do not bother to remove the code that is there by default - do not remove the code - instead set it to do nothing and swipe left again to the last and most important menu -Settings -
Fill \ Mark V according to the to my settings as the following -
Screen type - Black Screen
Power Management - V
Capacitive Buttons - V
Screen Locked - V
Action Type - Gestures (this is most important) !!!
Everything else is unmarked except the settings that are unchangeable by default.
were Almost done -
Returning to the settings menu in the Nova Launcher
Enter the Gestures & Inputs
scroll down and click on Double Tap
Now we have entered the list the top three sub menus -
NOVA - APPS - SHORTCUTS ׁׁ
Go to APPS and scroll down until you see
"Screen off" (not the "off and Lock Screen Configuration")
After we set off the Screen You can tap the screen two times and the configuration screen opens here - also follow closely after my settings (prove to work best) to preserve battery life and cause all this process to work like in the video
Screen off and Lock Configuration settings - everything should be umarked and all il sound options are Disabled (to my taste) - the only thing I marked was
Use relock workaround 1.
Everything else should not be marked (as recommended for better battery life)
This is it, you can start and enjoy your Samsung with LG's tap to wake
its not perfect but its very convinent
this is my first guide on xda!
edit: right now night clock is not co-operating with this tweak, if you want your night clock to work set the information stream timeout to 30 seconds or more.
while night clock screen is on tap to wake does not work untill it sleeps again or pressing the physical lock button.
works brilliantly - thank you
It's worth noting that these kind of mods will keep your screen digitizer on all the time and probably will cause a battery drain. just FYI

i assume that the black pixels on amoled screen does not trigger battery drain...
anyway on Lg's the digitizer has to work as well to acknowledge the double tap,
i am only a novice would be happy to learn, i really enjoy this function but will surely remove it if it hurts my battery life...
so is there any other solution?

He's talking about the digitizer which must constantly wait for touch input, not the display. He's quite probably correct.
it sleeps again or pressing the physical lock button.
Got me excited untill I read it was only for Nova Launcher.
Having one for Touchwiz......now that's a neat trick.
I miss it.....I still double tap my screen all the time.
Couldn't it be set to use the acceleromator (sp)? It wouldn't turn the digitizer on unless it detected a quick jolt? It would then need to be a 3 tap to wake so it could first wake up and then detect the 2 taps, but that's just a guess...

I'm afraid there isn't. All mods that make the screen work when the phone is in deep sleep will deplete battery life in some way. The information stream is one of them. My battery life improved substantially as soon as I turned this off. Anyway, we have a home button on this device so no need to reach for the power button in awkward places like other devices. Enjoy the home button and forget about these mods. Just my opinion.
i tried this on my s6 without nova and it work fine...the knock on work just fine...now need to monitor battery for a day or two to see if it drains abnormally. thanks @mosesbd for solving my only grudge with samsung phone...
I'm used this for long times ago, but it drain phone's battery. Because it just turns off the screen but not deep-sleep.
Update the links, the links don't work, but search for the apps in the app store and you should be fine
Not sure if the drain would be too much. My old BB Z10 I used for work had a similar function. Swipe up and it would wake and unlock. Battery was great.
The Lumia 1020 I use as my personal line has double tap to wake and battery life is great. Having the feature along with Glance didn't make much of a difference in battery life for me.
May or may not make a big difference on a phone that didn't have this functionality built in.
Thx thats great

thanks, it should be fine now.
hello, compared to the gesture wake up which one drains more battery?
If screen is set for 15s, battery drainage isn't a huge problem. It's fine in my opinion on the latest firmware.
Do use this n enjoy tap-to-screen off
If you guys are worried about battery drain, then try this app out........360 Hibernation Master. I've had it for months now and it WORKS LIKE A CHARM! It basically shuts down all your apps when screen is off (including data and Wi-Fi), but you can STILL get texts (SMS & MMS), IMs, e-mails, calls, etc. I go to bed with 100% power, and wake up 7 hours later........ it's STILL at 100% (or else 99%)!!!!!!! The problem with Samsung's and other phones' "Power Saver Mode" is that they cause issues with incoming group and/or photo (aka, MMS) text messages, but this one DOESN'T! Costs $1.95 for full version (you upgrade WITHIN the app), but WELL worth it!!
Note: If you game a lot though, you MAY notice a slight decrease in speed. But if you're like me and NOT a gamer, then I think it will work just fine for what we're doing here. I haven't tested it though, so if someone wants and report back here, go ahead! I have the Sony Xperia Z3, but I just pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, so when I get it, I'll post back here to let you know if it works or not. But if you have a Samsung phone now, go for it! And let us know!
