So I just got bored tonight and decided to see what the internals of the hero were like. idk if you have ever seen an iphone inside or an ipod touch but they have everything super compact in there... well the hero (htc) really failed at that. there is about 1/5th of an inch of empty space only filled by the battery and camera. as well as a couple antenna's. I'm a little bummed that they didn't use the space that well, seems half-assed.
Did you notice how the power and talk keys are secured in? There is a little plastic rod that was melted down which goes through a loop molded as a part of those buttons, making it almost impossible to remove them. Completely insane. The rest of the phone is surprisingly simple to disassemble.
yeah it took about 5 minutes to get every part separated.. I also cleaned my trackball (took it out) and that required some crafty fingers. and yes I did see that, im kinda glad it was that simple

If you have to remove the digitizer for any reason be VERY careful. The ribbon cable is easy to crack and the digitizer itself is very fragile. It takes about 10 minutes of careful prying at the edges to loosen the glue enough that you can pull it out.
Personally, I'm very happy with the simplicity of this phone's design. It makes repairs much easier! I agree that HTC could have used the space a bit more efficiently and slimmed the phone down a little though.
Any chance you can post some pictures..
I am not brave enough to open mine. But always interested to see the insides if somebody would be willing to post.
seen a few iphone tear-downs
I usually take pics w/ the phone... but I'll see what I can do.
when i said half assed, I just meant their space management thats all
Perhaps that space could be used to house a full size SD card and give our phones 32GB at a reasonable price.

hey man
can we see the new awesome black 8125 !!! i have been waiting !!!!
Been waiting here too!
Does that mean it didn't work? Maybe he forgot to mask off the screen. The keyboard buttons might not move either. Would be neat to see a black one though.
I am also curious as to how a black one will look....
He might have got caught up trick-or-treating!!
You should post pics with maybe a little How-To guide on how you did it and what kind of paint you used.
i actually got caught up with work.
i will be uploading the pics to my server tonight sorry for the delay .
ill post a how two as sooon as i paint my 2nd 8125 im gonna go white on the 2nd.

and yeah everything works 100 percent no lose parts / objects everything works like new.
well hell, i will be the first to vote for a "how-to"!! i have been interested in doing something like this for a bit but havent had the time. thats great to see that you had success with the project.
i need to get ahold of another facia (cause mine has a few battle wounds from them drunken nights) for my 8125 then id be totally down to give it a go. if you do a walk thru, make sure to note which kind of paints you use and such... and if anyone knows where to get a brand new facia, lemme know.

i like it. excellent work digitalmediaworkz. i agree with wErSa that a lil howto is a good idea + im too looking for new casing since mine althou not even a month old already has some scratches n paint chipped off.
looks good...i think white would look awesome. i would like to see pic once you're done with white.
why didn't you paint the keys?
for those interested in a new facia (casing) i found this site. they have them available for $79 (for the 8125.. didnt check other phones).
if anyone knows of any other places to find em for cheaper, speak up!!!
wErSa
thanks for the responses I kinda did it with a rush since I was anxious to see if it was gonna power up I will be respraying it including the main keyboard trim by the beginning of next week.
might do white or gold base with candy red I come from the custom car paint scene so I got a couple ideas.

Just curious how well everyones devices have been holding up? I've had my advantage for a little over a year now, and It has became an almost indespensible everyday device for me. After about 6 months I decided to ditch the original leather case, and use it naked. Overall i'm pretty tough on my advantage. I've had a screen protector on it since birth, so my screen is perfect, its been dropped numerous times, damn butter fingers, without any microdrive issues. There is quite a bit of wear around the edges on mine from the keyboard rubbing, and the plastic around where you insert the stylus has spider cracked...I even have a crack on the plastic that covers the camera lens. Luckily it doesent show up in any of the pictures it takes. I really couldnt be happer with how my device has held up to my abuse everyday. The advantage has probably been my first device...that if and when i break it for good...I will probably replace it with another advantage. Below are some shots of how its holding up....and yes its about time for a good scrubbing heh.

And my heavily work keyboard still works like a charm though
I also had mine for over a year now, and I'm pleased to say that it is still looking very good.
Like you, if I for any reason is to find a replacement for my Athena, it will still be the same Athena (the 7500/7501, not the 7510), unless they come up with a better replacement.
As you can see, mine is in really really good condition. The paint for the "reset" lettering comes and USB port comes off a little bit due to trying to stick my stylus and usb port in the dark, but it is otherwise looking new. My keyboard is unused so that plastic part is completely without scratch.
I'll add my pics at come spoint, but what I was thinking is why didn't us lot who use the keyoard not just leave that plastic thing on the keyboard on, would mean our keyboards aren't screwed now.

I've been using that since I got my ameo. It's really useful. They've replaced it twice when I had to send my machine for repairs (which for $25 is great). So mine is still pristine.
Unfortunately the second time mine went in for microdrive issues, the replacement unit has a hairline crack by the stylus hole. Not really noticeable unless you look for it (which I did on its return ).

Wow, thanks for the link, that zagg shield stuff looks killer, plus they do one for the full body of the advantage! that almost tempts me to get a new advantage just to use this! at this point, mine is rough enough that I wouldnt bother putting one on it....but someday....
And eaglesteve...mad props for keeping yours looking at clean as it is....I kinda wanted a silver one more...but im afraid with my roughness, the white/silver would show more of my damage heh
Well, I unbranded my atrix using the penny method and have now "re-branded" it with an android sticker. I actually ordered 2 because I wasn't sure of fitment for one. I tried the larger one first and it probably would have fit, had I not been stupid:

I already had it on very well before I realized it overlapped the camera section... So, I removed that and replaced it with this:
It's hard to capture the color accurately in a picture, but the first one seems to be a bit closer to me. I think I liked the first one better, had I not messed it up. I may end up ordering another offset version, but going to wait to see what more protective (sticker type) covers come out for the atrix first. Considering how cheap it was, I don't really care too much that the first one didn't work out or that I might end up taking the second one off soon anyways.
For anyone interested, these stickers, as well as other designs and colors, can be found here: http://www.androidstickers.com/

I might try that if I decide to order another.... kind of a waste of money to keep ordering them, but they're cheap enough that I might as well give it a try and it'll be easier to switch if I find myself dissatisfied with the look. Can always stick the extra on something else if I want.
Woof... I'll stick with the sexy, slim, soft-touch, black plastic of the incipio feather...
I'm probably going to end up going with something different... just waiting till there are more options. Not really interested in a case though. Pretty much waiting for the "skins" type options to come out. They offer basic scratch protection but that's about it, it seems.
Emailed them with an idea and they're looking into it... might have something a bit cooler if it pans out.

Yes, it is unfortunate, but a lot of the manufacturers are using chromed plastic now a days. This is the second one I have seen with an issue of having the chrome come off. Not really too bad considering the number sold, but I know, bad if it happens to you. Get a replacement and happy Thriving.
I saw a post on Toshiba's site where a guy had bought two Toshiba-branded screen protectors for his Thrive. Well he went to remove one and it left the entire screen covered in a sticky, adhesive mess. Seems they can't even get those right either, let alone the dysfunctional device it's supposed to be protecting.
I can't divorce this company fast enough.

Do you actually own a Thrive? All I see you doing is flaming the unit and Toshiba. Im not defending them if they wronged you more power to you... but I feel skeptical. Im just sayin...

Well seems like someone still sees something they like, sleep of death and wake issues were fixed, we have some custom roms, and netflix...sounds like a good day to me.
So, anyway. I dropped my brand new S4 two days after getting it. Had not gotten my case yet so it bit the dust in a big way.
Hit on the corner JUST right so that the cracks spiderwebbed the whole screen.:crying:

Called AT&T to find out just how crappy and worthless their insurance is - $6.99 a month buys you the privilege of paying a $199 deductible to get anything out of them.
Oh well, glad my company had not wasted the money on that BS! And I will make sure we never do pay for that.
Ordered a glass replacement kit from Amazon THIS ONE and it comes with literally everything you need but a blow dryer/heat gun. It even comes with enough double-sided tape to do about 20 phones
Watched a number of YouTube videos to see how it is done and finally found one that did not show a complete dismantling of the phone (which I suspected was overkill anyway unless you are replacing digitizer) and went that route.
It was a long and difficult process (about 2 hours total), but I did manage to get through it OK. Until the end.
I was so excited to be almost finished and so anxious to get the new glass on that I did not look carefully enough at the glass before putting it on.
Since this aftermarket glass had no "Samsung" name on it, I accidentally put the damn thing on backwards!
So the menu and back buttons are swapped (no biggie since I know which is which without looking) and the front camera is covered up with black.
I figure it is not the end of the world since I NEVER use the front camera anyway and I am sure I will need to replace it again eventually so I will correct it then.
So, any of you who have broken their glass - go ahead and do the replacement yourself. If even someone as clumsy and retarded as I am can do it, screw it up and still make it work, I figure ANYONE CAN.
At least I provided my wife with something to laugh at and a funny story to tell her friends at work.
Thanks for telling the story sir. The first picture of the broken display is bone-freezing !

Excellent observation!
Probably so, just haven't noticed I guess. I may have to go ahead and get another piece of glass and redo it sooner rather than later.
Of course it will be a lot easier with none of that UV bonded adhesive to hack through this time. If I thought I could get the existing one off without breaking I would probably try it right away.
