Heres a link I found searching for the release date of 2.1.
http://www.ozcarguide.com/technology/cellphone-pda/2652-sprint-htc-hero-android-2-1-release
So can someone help me revert back to stock so i can update to the original 2.1?

searching is fundamental.
yeah that link has been posted 5 times and which probably came from this thread http://phandroid.com/2010/04/05/htc-hero-getting-android-2-1-april-16th/ but they forget to mention its for Europe, Nordic/Greek/RUS/UKR/SA Roms

Even if your source wasn't a joke blog, why would you want the official 2.1?
You may completely lose the ability to return to root. Also, what will you do when Sprint releases a heap of steaming cow dung as their official release? You will be stuck with it until they release a service update three months later.
I would seriously think through the pros and cons of ever running the official release versus running a modified official release that will be available here (probably faster than you would get your official OTA update anyway).
In about.....an hour or so, someone will post another thread saying:
"DUDE, I think 2.1 is coming out soon....just talked to a sprint rep"
There is no set date for the sprint 2.1 update yet. Anything you here so far is nothing more than rumor. It's still in testing.

As stated before, this is the same idiot blogger who announced that Sprint had officially released 2.1 for the Moment.
This guy just makes **** up to get hits. Ignore it.
idk i just feel the official 2.1 would be more stable than any of these other roms out here. but damn without root? idk i love root ever since i rooted my phone. flipz i love your rom but the nexus launcher sometimes freezes or lags.

Step 1) Find huge rock
Step 2) Place HTC Hero on level surface. Concrete flooring works best
Step 3 Take huge rock from "Step 1)" and, with brute force, pummel HTC Hero till reverted back to stock ROM, unrooted.

You have to use either Sprint 1.29 RUU or Fresh's 1.56 RUU. That will make it stock again.

Some people do, and some don't. There is a fix if you brick it while RUUing. However if you are wanted to go back to stock for the 2.1 "official" release you might not be able to root again. They seem to leave the door open on the first round of software, but then close the hole on the next round. Seems the case for every phone
So the ability to root maybe lost if I was to update to a "official" release. Hmm... okay, good to know. Thanks.

Yea give it like 24 hours after the release, someone will do a nand dump, root it and post it on here. One thing I would reccomend people stay away from would be a new version of an RUU based off of 2.1, as that would put you up a **** creek if a root isn't found. I hear lots of problems trying to .29 RUU after a .56 RUU, I'm sure the same will be said for whatever the next version is.

They may, or may not close the exploit that was found in 1.5 but if so it will only be a matter of time before some of these guys who are far more talented than I find a way to root 2.1, 1.5 was not rootable when it was released. Regardless the 2.1's you will see later today will be far superior to whatever sprint ends up releasing.
You should be able to RUU without any issues. However, you might still not be able to see protected apps in the market. I used the steps in this thread to fix that:

This fix didn't work for me, however I was able to RUU, update to DamageControl 1.0, download some protected apps, and then upgrade to DC2.0r2 (without wiping between DC1 and DC2). This opened up protected apps and solved the black on black contact problem for me.
-obviously do so at your own risk and all-

Speaking of this, I am currently rooted, but running stock 1.5(don't ask)will I still be able to get the update or do I have to be completely unrooted to do so!
Also as far as the update is concerned, I know on the droid forums there were instructions on saving the update before installation so all could get it! What is the procedure for doing so!
It seems with the current state of affairs the update could come in a minute or a day or a month, basically no one know, so it could be anytime, so I just wanna be prepared for when it drop to hand it off to the real DEV.!
Roman
Eh, you could go ahead and flash a new ROM right now if you want. A fix was found for people getting bricked from the RUU, so you're safe to use the RUU now without fear of having a permanent brick on your hands.

Search for RUU and you will find the wisdom you seek.
This needs to be moved to the general section. Not too mention, you need to search first before asking questions that have been asked plenty of times in the past.

Try that fancy new search function.
So "searching" aside.
Why are you wanting to Unroot for 2.1? If you currently enjoy the privledges of Root, this would make no sense.
After the 2.1 update is released - it is more than likely that our asroot2 exploit along with most of the others that have been found will be patched. My guess is HTC has a team of people correcting root exploits as users find them.
Eris for example only has root because of a leaked development version of the rom that still had root in it.
besides all the good info posted above if all you want to unroot for is to move your phone to the new 2.1 official being released, supposedly, on Friday than all you need to do is nothing. The release is most likely going to be an RUU just like the leaked version and that means that when you run it everything on your phone will be wiped. So there you go, if you want official 2.1 on friday, do nothing till friday and then download the release and install it.

As far as the searching goes....since bricking my original Hero I am too afraid to go based on the information scattered in threads so I post my own question because I have in the past discovered that things change and most of the people in this forum are pretty up to date with the current scenario of things. So I ask the question. If I were to reword that question into a statement of confirmation would that have changed the interpretation of it? I have the file downloaded to go back to stock. I just wanted to see if I would have gotten a link to the same file version as me.
As far as going back to stock goes Kcarpenter I am going to be giving this phone to my lovely lady who will in turn let the kids beat on it. She is not into all the r2d2 c3po software and wanted me to put it back the way it was when I first bought it. And yeah you were the one to help me figure out how to flash my Hero. I switch at least twice a day I have no clue which version I am running. Thanks again. I will be back with a Nexus One otherwise I am taking the Samsung Moment for a spin.

Dont get too excited. No one is develpoing ROMs based off of this, because there hasnt been a way found to root this. If you install it it WILL unroot your phone, maybe permanently. But there are several ROMs already running the leak of this. The leak that had the release keys instead of test keys that came out a few days before, and even has the same MD5 checksum as the HTC/Sprint download. Check Fresh Rom 2.1.1

Tried it on leak v3. I still have hboot 1.49 so no change there. Other than that, the only thing that changed was the build number. It now has release-keys instead of test-keys after it. It is the OTA, just doesn't really do much for those running leak v3 and looking to root.

I've verified that the rom.zip within this RUU is identical (based on checksums) to the non-root PB00IMG.ZIP known as "leak v3" (the fourth leak).

I'm wondering, what do people think "Identical" means?

First of all I said "those on a leak", didn't say leak v3. Just to bring you up to speed there are 2 leak versions before v3, hence the v3. It would be more official because this one WAS released by Verizon, whereas the leaks were not, which is why they were leaks. It is identical yes, but the build number is different, which would differentiate between leak v3 and this OFFICIAL release should you need to return your phone. Just because the support people might not be able to tell, someone can believe me. I know people who have returned there leak and been charged for a new phone because they had unofficial software on there phone, never even mentioning it. This was a month or more later, just showed up right there on there bill.
So, people who feel better having an official release (whether your on leak v1, v2, or v3) can flash this, it's official. If someone who has root can't read where it says this is for people on the leaks, if you have or ever want root don't update. Then that's their problem, not much you can do about that....
