So not sure if anyone else has noticed this but my keyboard seems real slow in flipz 2.1 rom. I have tried in handcent and in the stock messenger and even turned off haptic feedback and it just seems reallllly slow. Anyone else have this issue?
Also, anyone know which colors handcent can make the led flash when you receive a message? I can't get any of them to flash.
Unfortunately, our Hero's led color can not be changed by applications because of coding even though it can be green, amber, and yellow. As for the keyboard, the stock keyboard(without voice), swype and possibly aosp keyboard can be installed. Just search to find out how.
You're not alone there. I flashed my first 2.1 ROM yesterday (DC 2.06, later that night updated to 2.07 via DCUpdater), and noticed that in Landscape, the keyboard lags harder than it did in 1.5. Typing in portrait mode seems fine..quite fast; but in landscape mode forget it. I even flashed the AOSP keyboard, and even with voice disabled, it is only slightly better than the HTC keyboard (also the version without voice/smileys).
So what is the basic color the led can flash at because mine doesn't flash at all.
Ya landscape mode is the issue with the speed. I don't like swype at all and haven't really messed with any other keyboards.
A lot of that lag is coming from HTC's messaging app. I pushed the stock android messaging app and texting is great for me.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. My keyboard (modded XDA version) is blazing fast. If you guys really, want, I can post a modded version that I made of the new DamageControl ROM up here... Please note though that I DID remove quite a bit of stuff from it... such as Voice Dialer, Voice Search, all the HTC widgets except for clock, weather, and search, all the Sprint apps, etc. Pretty much, it's just an extremely slimmed down version. Oh, and the keyboard is black with the vanilla lockscreen
Normally, the LED will blink green for notifications, orange when plugged in and charging (green when plugged in and battery full), and blink red if the battery is at 15% or less.
As far as the keyboards go, like I said, I have used the default HTC keyboard without voice/smileys, as well as the AOSP (plain android) keyboard, and both lag badly in landscape mode. I haven't tried Swype, and honestly don't plan to. It just doesn't interest me.

if you disable vibrate on press for the keyboard that helps ALOT
I forgot to mention that vibe and sounds are off. I have auto correction on, but that's it. I thought i wasn't able to type fast before, now I *really* have to type slowly and deliberately, otherwise I can easily get 5-7 words ahead of the phone (and I don't even type that fast on the thing lol)

Nope. Already have it disabled and it's super slow compared to the pancake rom I had from flipz.

Using the stock one or handcent make it both really slow and annoying. Really do not like this.

I don't use Handcent, but the trackball on the hero isn't designed to light up for any notifications, which is as far as I know, a limitation of the actual phone itself, and not just a software issue. Overall, in 2.1 the trackball is linked to the light sensor, so it will go on and off as it sees necessary, but I am not aware of anyone being able to make it light up for notifications.

Handcent also has an option on making it light up. So unless I am totally not reading both things correctly I would think the trackball would light up.

Before the latest leak the trackball light didn't work at all. This new leak has the light working and it is linked to the light sensor (doesn't light up in a bright room).
Ohhh...for a while there were issues with the trackball not lighting up at all, like...period. Now the trackball will light up as it needs to based on the light sensor. Go into a dark room, or hold your finger over the light sensor (black area just to the right of the earpiece) and roll the ball. It should light up. If you are in a light room, it won't light up. It's a new feature in 2.1 as opposed to 1.5, where it would light up every time it was touched, regardless of the light conditions.
As for handcent, the options for changing the LED color and trackball lighting up are for other phones that support it; the hero does not. The hardware isn't capable of using the ball as a notification light, and the actual LED color can't be changed.

That would be the GSM hero in Europe, off which the sprint hero is based; apparently that version has it, but for some reason it's not on the American version.
As far as the keyboard goes, using the android messaging app posted by Leukay a few posts above works like a charm!

One thing I really liked about the Touch Pro was the little light wheel flashed when you had an incoming text, a missed call, or a voice mail. This was especially useful if I walked away from my phone, and came back.
Now I don't know anything about programming, but I was wondering if it is possible to make the little buttons on the Touch Pro 2 flash in a similar fashion. Like a wave of light across the bar, if you understand what I mean.
Sorry if there is something like this out there. I didn't know what to search for.
why don't you just set the notification led to blink for each of these events. you can set it in the sounds & notification settings.

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see where. On the sounds and notifications, it only has a tab for Sounds and a tab for Notifications. Not trying to sound snarky, but I don't see anything about a light on there.
Like I said, maybe I'm just missing it.
on the notifications tab theres a drop down menu for events. look in that & find which events you want the status led to blink for

Yeah. I hope so too. I liked the little flashing ring of light on the original Touch Pro.
I wonder why Google didn't give us this update that the hacking community has had for so long. Thoughts?
Because they didn't even give us this update... who knows, maybe it will be in the actual release, if this isn't it.
Edit:
It seems that there IS this feature built in, just depens on the app, etc... at least some are reporting colored track ball alerts for differing apps.
I can confirm the above edit. I get different colors but no way of changing to a preference.

Which colors for which alerts? Mine seems white for everything.
On my GF stock nexus phone i updated to froyo and for text it came up as magenta color.
I tried using handcent sms to change the color but i dont think it is configured yet to control that.
Damn, mine's still white.
I just did a little test with AK notepad and set a notification to glow green and sure enough, it works. I guess the individual apps have to give you the option to change the color.

Uhm, SMS Popup allows you to use any color for SMS. And I use the Bloo Facebook App that gives me a dark blue notification when I get comments, wall posts, etc.
My color trackball works with AK notepad!
Change the LED color settings, create a new note, set the remind and turn standby mode (press power button) and wait!
I wonder if the .34 kernel from cyanogen breaks the trackball . For those of u who its working what kernel version you have? .34 or .32 stock
I really miss trackball alert and the modifications made to the messaging app, I need my colored notifications back!
There's a reason there are no configurable colors for the trackball.
The update to the trackball is behind the scenes and it's meant for the developers. It's up to the application makers to choose the colors for their notifications.
On the plus side, this is android and that's why we have things like lilhermits trackball notifcation alert modifier. =)
Trackball colors IS in Android 2.2:

The STOCK Google apps don't let you configure the colors, but I'm sure someone will whip up an app to control all the colors within 1 or 2 days
Yeah I'm disappointed with froyo because I wanted color track ball for my gmail, talk, etc. How will third party developers be involved with the core stock Google apps? That was the whole point, Google! I'm sure its only 3 lines of code to add into settings to switch the color.
Otherwise you would just root in the first place which defeats the whole point of waiting all this time for official support in froyo.
Third party developers can and already do send the information to light up the trackball.
Has anyone found any app to change the LED color or flash frequency for notifications? That was probably my favorite thing about the G1, and when I got the Cliq I was disappointed. The Slide is leaps and bounds better than the Cliq, but I was still hoping for a blue LED...
Im pretty sure if you use handcent for notifications atleast you can change the color for text
I use handcent for all my texting, and that's about the only thing it won't do so far is change the LED.

why not put a led like in the g1 its nice to know what the notification is before the screen goes on... it cant be that much more costly, i am also coming from the cliq, I bought a g1, mt3g,cliq and not a slide all on the first day they were available from tmob.
im very glad to be back to htc, i have used htc almost exclusivity for the last 4-5 years and i doubt ill stray again in the future

Are you sure your getting a blue led flash using Ringo Pro, cause i have it and its green only. Even if i set every setting on my phone to not show a led for notifications, using Ringo pro it still flashes for some reason. If you have a blue led pls take a picture so we can see this?
I was taking a quick look at the leds in the G2.
When i look at the jogball-backlight in regards to the trackpad light, I am unable to change the color. It retains the following value.
# cat color
color : invalid lengthI tried to echo "0 255 255" into that, and still see the same message when I cat it. Any ideas?
Also, I can cat 255 into the brightness with no effect. I see the value when I cat brightness, but the light is still off. Looks like you have to trigger it? When sleeping the display and forcing the notification light, the brightness gets set back to 0 after it's flash.
Also the jogball-backlight directory contains:
- uevent
l- subsystem
l- devices
- power/wakeup
- brightness
- max_brightness
- trigger
- color

It has a touchpad light like the nexus and a battery notify light next the speaker. Currently, the trackpad flashing during an incoming call and the led light by the earpiece flashes during low battery or solid while charging. No flashing anything for notifications such as messages/email/ or reminders which sucks obviously. No apps change this currently without root. I guess this was the concern and the color obviously.
Tweetdeck makes the led flash when new post appear
When I have a new text message, with Chomp, the trackpad flashes intermittently as long as it goes unchecked.
Well that's good news I look a bit harder for 3rd party apps that can make notifications without root and see. Plus, there is a trackpad light app that requires root but let's you change colors and it creates notifications for email/sms/mms/ and reminders.
Have you tried that application yet? Would be interesting to see if it works as the directory structure looks different than what I read about the nexus 1. I was wondering if the 'invalid number' for color was due to no color being available, or just something that we couldn't read/set.
The notification in the earpiece looks to be amber/green versus RGB.

The notification in the earpiece also goes red when battery is low along with amber and green so I think its RGB. I miss that led being used for notifications like on the G1. The trackpad glows slowly for notifications and seems to be only if the screen is off.

If you go to /sys/class/leds you will only see amber and green. On my G1 I see red, green, blue. I think the amber is actually used for the red. I think it would be hard to having any blue colors without a blue led setting.

Im assuming none of you guys seen the other two ligths located at the top left of the device on the face? if im not mistaken if you hold it up to the light it shows a purple square bulb below and a blue one above. is the blue one for blutooth? and is the other thing the proximity sensor?
I'm pretty sure both of the other "bulbs" you see are actually both the proximity sensor, on my vibrant there were 3 things, one was the ambient light sensor and the other 2 were the proximity sensors. I guess its an emitter and reciever.

Hey, I just got the G2 and I am also gravely missing the LED notifications from the G1. I've tried the app "Blinker" with no satisfaction. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What is this reminder you are talking about? I don't see any reminder in the sdk. Also, I would be on board with finding alternate apps that use this reminder instead if the Gmail app used it. No notification on gmail blows, I'm sorry!
Also, I heard chomp shows the led notification, but I tried it out and it doesn't how about being a little more constructive and offering alternatives.

No its not a built in option. Nor would it be in the sdk... there a few third party apps that add the ability. Here's what I use: gmail notifier/ sms notifier/ and calendar notifier. When the N1 came out, all we had was white notifications from the trackball. It took some time but devs eventually figured out how to get diverse colored notifications from the trackball, and from the charge LED.
Relax and be patient, surely the G2 will follow the same path. It just came out.
Not sure whether I'm the only one but there are a few things that really bugging me with the OTA:
1) Auto-brightness now just always keeps me at the lowest brightness. I prefer the auto but not if its going to make my screen always dark.
2) The camera actually seems to take not as good pictures for some reason. Everything looks more washed out, especially in low light cases.
3) The default black background worked with all programs, and the white just doesn't. For example FPSE: when you are picking from a list of roms if the list doesn't go all the way to the bottom then where there are things to pick from its black and below it its white. Titanium Backup has the same thing below the list of schedules. It is frekin ugly and just doesn't look right like it did before.
4) The top bar icons just don't look as nice as the old ones.
5) Talking over the phone everyone sounds quiter and grainer

I've noticed that low light pictures suck now.
I'm not having the same low light picture issues.
Also, if some apps look bad because of the new theme, those app makers should fix their apps. If just one app inherits the new color-schemes, all apps can. Some programmers are not using "best practice" techniques in this case.
For example, they manually set the background color and font color, rather than inherit from the colors from the system. Should be a simple fix for them, if they care.

This is why I think Motorola should have put the new exposure setting onscreen instead of in the menu settings. That setting makes a huge difference in picture quality, and I have to adjust it way too much for it to be in menu setting.
I am disapointed with a few things also. Low light pics seem effected, I cant tether anymore, my quadrant standard score is 300-800 lower consistantly now, there is an annoying lag when I unlock with the slider, and I prefer the top bar icons with 2.2.2.

To add to that
