Best file manager (no, it is not ASTRO) - Desire Themes and Apps

Hi,
Most people will use ASTRO for file manager app.
ASTRO is nice and works, indeed.
But, I found "EStrong file explorer" is much better:
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.estrongs.android.pop/
Here are some features that you cannot find it in current ASTRO version:
- Browse to share folder on PC/Linux via LAN (Windows share folder / Samba)
- FTP client built-in
- Built-in ZIP file handling support (extract only at current version)
I tested it to browse my share folder which is located in NetGEAR NAS. It worked fine and fast.
Oh yes, it also has those basic "app manager" features:
- Backup
- Restore
- Install
- Uninstall
Price: FREE
Search EStrongs in the Market to find this app (thanks to ninjakettle).
And this should be the QR code / barcode:

}

I agree, have tried both as well. EStrong is also my preference.

Really nice. Thanks.

Theres also OI file manager http://www.openintents.org/en/node/159 witch seems to be good too, more to choose from.

thanks for that gogol, EStrong is really good
I especially like the ability to access the files on my PC and stream mp3s using the LAN

Having windows server with lots of share, I've only used estrong aswell... Never did like astro anyway.
Having estrong task manager as a favorite aswell

Nice tip - very good app. By the way, if searching the store, it's under Estrongs (with an s on the end)

Thank you,
This app is awesome

I have to admit i have no problems with ASTRO but this one does look good, i tried looking on the market store but was unable to find it. does anyone know hen its going to be submitted?

it's on the market now
i used a barcode scanner to link my phone to it on the market, but as ninjakettle already pointed out, you can search the market for "estrongs" (without the quotes) as in Estrongs File Explorer
it seems the the market search isn't too clever when it comes to searching for partial names no matter how close you are *shrug*

I added the QR code in the 1st post.

can you create zip files with this?

Linda Manager is also good, try it out, i has apps unistaller and task manager build in

Ok finally got estrongs to see my PC. I however cannot get files from my phones SD card to my PC. When I try to cut or copy a file over I get a failed message. I ideas why this might not be working? I'm running the Orange stock ROM on my Desire.
EDIT - Is there a maximum file size that can be copied over using estrongs? I've managed to copy some SNES Roms over but not a 17MB file from my SD card to PC.

I'm using AndroZIP and AndFTP. Personally, I think AndroZIP is better than EStrong as a file manager and it is way smaller. AndFTP is the best SFTP/FTP client I've seen.

You right, EStrongs cannot compress files ... but that's might not be the main functionality of a file manager (in Windows desktop you need winzip, winrar or things like that).
Ability to browse network share folder is much more important ... and it has FTP client built in in one package

I thought ASTRO had SFTP. It seems if ya scroll to the right on top menu bar theres a network button. NOT that i have anything against EStrongs..

ASTRO does have that functionaity but you need to enter all the settings manually. Even I switched from ASTRO to Estrongs as the FTP search is brilliant.

Sure, I did not know that. But it does not have share folder access via LAN (CIFS/Samba).

I have a PC connected to my wifi router and have some shared folders on it. I don't have any passwords set up. I tried entering the ip (192.168.1.101 in my case), but EStrong doesn't let me connect without entering a user and pass.
How do I connect to these folders?

pick the color you want for example RS_Bar_blue.png and RS_Ind_blue.png and rename them to RS_Bar.png and RS_Ind.png then copy to \windows folder and allow to overwrite the original ones, I included in the zip file the original color just in case you want to go back to it.
Man, great work Poorlyduck, let me just give this thread a bump. I used the yellow random access along with the other yellow cube and htc home icons you provided, my mogul looks real nice! Thanks!
Poorlyduck,
Excellent tool. Hopefully will be appended to a ROM or 2 somewhere, with your permission.
Thanks for the excellent work.
WB
thank you guys for all comments.
@wacky.banana you definitly have my permission to use them anywhere you want, enjoy!
BEAUTIFUL!!
Among all HTC's shipped softwares, random access might be the most practical one. However, it's black-grey bar just doesn't see eye to eye to roms with non-htc-black&grey-interface. Your work just make everything perfect! thank you a lot!!
the green is poppin!
THANKS

I also get the access denied message, so probably the files are open.
However, besides Active Sync (which I cannot kill for some reason) there's nothing running. How can I overwrite the files?

you cant overwrite the file from the pc to your device if its protected, so you need to move it to storage card or somewhere beside windows folder, and use your device to move the file to windows folder.
I cannot get these to work at all. The files on my device are read-only and I cannot replace them from my PC or when I put the files on my storage card and try to copy them into the Windows folder. It gives me an error about memory and making sure the files aren't read-only or in use. Any ideas?

first make sure contacts (random access) is closed, leaving the app running will prevent you from changing the images. Then using resco explorer (or any other 3rd party file explorer) copy the files from teh storage card to the random access folder (typically this will be the \windows folder). If prompt with a warnign about overwriting ROM files, go ahead and ok the prompt.
That didn't work for me. I downloaded Resco File Explorer and copied the files from my storage card to the windows folder, overwrote the files and nothing changed.
I've had the same problem - tried the storage card, tried Rescoe - what else can I try?
welcome to my world! I can't seem to get random access working on my touch either....says it doesn't have perms to install....aggravating...

[GUIDE/DOWNLOAD] Install apk files quickly from computer to your device

Hi
.. Since i think the progress of connecting phone, put apk file on sd card, disconnecting phone, browsing phones sd card for the apk file for then to install it is annoying ..
So I've made a quick batch file to quickly drag and drop files to install
Lets get started.
1- Download the attached zip. Should look something like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2- Extract using your favourite extraction program or using windows explorer.
You should now have a folder like this one:
3- Thats actually it !
What you can do now is:
Put the apk file inside the folder "Android app installer" and run the "Drag and drop files here" file (remember the ".apk" suffix)
OR
the easier way is to right click on the "Drag and drop files here" file and choose Send to, then click Desktop (As shortcut). From there. you can, any time, just drag any apk file from any directory to the "Drag and drop files here" file. and it will install it directly.
BEFORE YOU GET STARTED YOU HAVE TO DO THIS:
1- Enable USB-Debugging on your phone
2- Connect your phone to your computer
Log:
-V 1.1 (Filename: "Android app installer v1.1.zip"):
Closes after you have installed file. doesnt ask for filename after installation.
-V 1.0 (Filename: "Android app installer.zip"):
Released
I have several batch files associated with .apk files (windows).
As an example, Installing an apk is as simple as right-clicking on the apk and choosing "install"

Photosphere feature in 4.2

So I was playing with Photosphere on my Nexus S, and a thought came in.
Samsung, or any other OEM's that make Android Camera, should work hard to bring 4.2 update to their Android Cameras.
Photosphere would be a standout/luring feature to promote their Android Cameras which are somewhat a new kind of product.
While Photosphere is still in beta and doesn't stitch very well, I think people still would like to try it out since it is something new and exciting.
Samsung, Nikon, you heard?
Hurry up before someone does it first.

Hi Robb
I followed your instructions and was able to download the App + Lib onto my PC and extracted the WinRar files.
I've copied them to my Galaxy Camera's Ext SD card and can copy them to the system directories.
But I'm not sure how to change permissions on the files.
Can you please explain how to do this? I'm a noob to Android.
Thanks.
I use photo sphere too on my galaxy camera and work fine.
So for your problem, you need to change right of the file like say on the link provide.
For doing that, you need a file explorer with admin right.
I use ES file explorer.
Once you install this file explorer, you need first to allow him to access to root, for that go to : Settings
Then on the boot you will found : Root settings
Enable everything there.
Then after enable the first one, you get a pop up inform you to agree to give right on Super SU. Do Yes and after agree to give right.
When done, go to your folder app and lib where you copy the file, found the file one by one and made a long push on the file for show a menu and choice option on bottom "Properties" that open a new windows.
There click on "change" button and enable everything in "Read" column and on user for "write" column then click "ok" and again "ok".
Do that for all files (5 if I remember well) and reboot the Camera.
You will got 2 new icon for camera and galery
Hope I'm clear ^^

Thanks David.
I've downloaded ES File Explorer and am having difficulty copying the files to the system/app directory.
First I connect the SGC to my PC and after the files are extracted with WinRar I copied them to the Download folder on the Camera.
Then using ES File Explorer I navigate to the Download folder and tried to copy/paste the files to the System/app directory but it gave the message that copy "GoogleGallery.apk" failed? The Gmscore.apk was copied OK.
What am I doing wrong?
I'll recheck the Root settings but I think I did that right as I can access the Root directory in ES File Manager now.
BTW, could it be because my SGC is not Rooted?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes I think you need root your device for get right to change file in system/app folder or even right of file.
So first root your device, very easy for the moment due of Eqynox issue, uberNoobZA and cybriks on the forum confirm he can root with the tools from Chainfire.
You can read the full topic about root Galaxy Camera here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995245
Or go to page 5 firectly if you want use the method from Chainfire where uberNoobZA and cybriks confirm it work
The link about how to use the Chainfire tools :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050297
This method should be the easy way compare to the one use Odin, so you should be able to use it, it's only an app you run and do eveything alone
So do it and then try again to copy file and change right and you probably can use Photo Sphere (I like this function ^__^)

[HOW TO] Download files from the market store over 20MB via only 3G/4G without WiFi

Microsoft has established a limit on the size of downloaded files via 3G/4G transmission - we can downloaded only file to 20MB. I writed tutorial how to download files 20MB> from the market store and install them.
All operation, I show on one free game Throne Together (29MB).
1. We have to have:
- Pocket File Manager,
- device with supported microSD card,
2. We need link to the xap file, not only link to the market store.
Eg. link to the game is:
Code:
http://www.windowsphone.com/pl-pl/store/app/throne-together/3f89b6b3-516f-40e3-8937-4577d6911c8b
Link to the xap games is:
Code:
http://www.windowsphone.com/pl-pl/store/app/throne-together/3f89b6b3-516f-40e3-8937-4577d6911c8b[COLOR=Red][B]/xap?apptype=regular[/B][/COLOR]
The difference is only in the final text (red on the above). Copy link to the game.
3. Run Pocket File Manager and from the bottom beam on main page we select "Dowloads":
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
4. In next window, from the bottom beam we select "+" sign:
5. In next window, paste copied link to the market store and add at the end text: /xap?apptype=regular and confirm:
6. In next window we tap "play" sign on the bottom beam and downloading in progress:
7. Next, we have to find downloaded file in the location like on the screen:
8. Tap and hold finger on the file and from the context menu select copy or cut:
9. Now, paste copied file to the sd card location:
10. Now we go out from the Pocket File Manager and restart device.
11. After restart phone run market store and tap sd card. Copied file should there be in there. Select him and install, thats all.
Clever, if time-consuming, hack. Surprised you need the full reboot; it should be enough to just (re)launch the Store app, since users could copy XAPs to the SD card at any time over USB.
However, you may want to mention in the thread title the requirement of the SD card. The majority of WP8 models (not such how many actual phones, but most of the phone varieties) don't have an SD slot.
In any case, the place where this restriction is set seems to be analogous to where it was on WP7, so I'd like to create a homebrew app that will take care of it directly (by modifying the store config files). However, this will require an interop-unlocked phone, whereas your approach works on any phone with an SD card.

Yes of course, but without restart device we need long time to wait for show app on the sd card in the market store. Restart device shortens the time to wait. Microsoft wrote:
Note If you've just inserted the SD card or added the .XAP files, you might need to wait a few minutes before you can access your SD card from the Store.

Would be nice, but my L1520 haven't interop unlock and I don't know when it is unlocked
Anyway, for me that method it's good at this moment.
BTW for WP7.X to increase the download limit, we can change two xml file in the location:\My Documents\Zune\PimentoCache\Keepers:
These files is:
Downloaded_MOConfig.xml
LKG_MOConfig.xml
We have to find below string in them:
id=”MaxDownloadSize”>20
and change the value 20 to higher eg. 200
I was one of the people who found those files on WP7, and possibly the first to make use of them... believe me, I know. They're in a different location on WP8, I believe under EDMCache (I forget the exact path, though it's easy to find again). They *might* offer an easier option than external HTTPS proxies for installing apps from other stores.
