That really sucks....sorry man. It seems like in general this phone is made well but has these few issues that are its achilles heel.
Put it back to stock and trade it in. HTC has a one year warranty on defects for there phone's and sprint will trade it in.
Wait.... waaaht?
My end button has the silver paint chipping off... but I never thought it could be a problem? Dust in the screen? Screwed?? Why?
my phone has survived a lot in the past 5+ months(cant believe its been that long now), i don't seem to have a dust issue yet
but.....
most of the damn paint came off the end button and now it looks like someone smudged lipstick on my button
The ghost armor I have on my hero is a full protective cover, has little pieces for the call/end button too
no dust on my mine pant is chipped no worries EVO sooon
It's insanely easy to disassemble the Hero and blow out the dust. It's also pretty cheap for a new housing.

IS this service without a deductible when you bring the phone in? If so that beats sprints insurance. Might be worth it to break my bestbuy ban and get the Evo from them.
don't want your paint to chip? here's a quick tip!
don't push the buttons with your finger nail.
my buttons = completely fine
co-workers buttons = completely chipped.

Mine did not start as a chip. It started peeling off. I don't think that the paint they used is very adhesive to the plastic material the buttons are made of. I keep my fingernails trimmed and they never touch the buttons. It just simply is not a good material and paint match.
All of my end button paint is gone and almost all of my call button paint is gone. It really does not look that bad. I actually think it will look pretty cool when all my call buttons paint is gone... then I will just have a plain red and green buttons.

This is quite incorrect. According to the Policy, Best buy will not replace except in the case of a 3rd failed repair. The 3rd failed repair also has to be for the same thing each repair.

HIGHLY recommend the Ghost Armor for this and any other device. The armor is better than most I've tested and withstands tons of abuse. It will also help to prevent chipping and rubbing off of paint.

hmm strange.. I got my phone in november, and my silver area where all the buttons/trackball is at still looks as if I just took it out of the box.
Now my co-workers phone, purchased in december, looks like it's been to hell and back.
not that i think it would make much of a difference, but his is a with google branded phone, while mine's not. *shrug*

I hear that.
no dust on my screen of paint fading, then again I don't shove my smart phone into my jeans pocket next to change, keys, and my lighter. Funny though it seems phandroid has changed their site to look like XDA........wait this is xda
No chips whatsoever, but the dust has slowly taken over the lower third of my screen. (and gaining ground) ive also dropped my phone on the cement about a dozen times and its surprisingly durable.

get the insurance and then take it in. to prevent the dust, get a full body screen protective film to even cover the buttons. also pick up a body glove case.
F insurance, take risks .
I keep hoping that I will damage my hero enough to justify paying full price for an EVO, otherwise I will be waiting until mid-October.

this. the screen is a beast honestly. I'm actually having second thoughts about buying cases for it (one leather, one silicone gel). it's so light and thin it belongs in a pocket and I wouldn't put anything else in that pocket (change, keys, etc). In my opinion, for myself, I would never ever cover it up with a film and diminish the clarity, brightness, or touch sensitivity, however minuscule the difference might be my two pennies
ive tried to scratch it with keys and it wont happen same with a pocket knife.
this thing is TOUGH
I actually use the one that came with the Phone. U know, the one on the phone when it ships. It works great. I wash them in water, and shake most water off. I lay it on the phone with some water still on there. Not a lot duh, but enough to moist most of the sheet. I then use my credit card to flatten it nicely. It's great. And free. Oh, i also cut off the top right tab.
personally, I like riding bareback when it comes to phones if you're careful it's totally worth it.
99.9875% of the time the screen protector isn't necessary but then there's that ONE little thing that puts a scratch across the middle of the screen and it bugs me for the rest of the time I own the phone. That's why I use screen protectors.

Badass. I had to cut mine to fit inside of the slight chrome rim but totally worth the effort. I had the tmobile one on there and it looked like sh*t. Really degraded the screen quality IMO. Don't know why mine was over sized but it's all good now.
The video is in Japanese, but you'll figure it out.
First test...galaxy s in a bag with keys, screws, random metal, etc.
Second Text....nail / screw to the screen directly
Third Test...razor blade to the screen directly
Then they do several drop test.
I had a BestSkinEver protector on my G1 and my fingers didnt glide very well on the touchscreen. The Vibrant screen is very nice, fingers glide just great for Swype. Worried about putting a protector on it and losing this PLUS screen awesomeness.
For those who put a protector on, how does it feel/look?

I am now without a protector. I tried many times to get the finger print smudge off the stock shield but it just wouldn't come off. (on the sticky side, that touches the glass) I am gong to get the clearfreak.
What needs to be protected is that metal edge. I dropped my phone ONE TIME on concrete from KNEE LEVEL and now all four corners of the metal have ding in them. Under that cheap layer of gunmetal coloring is Chrome, wouldn't be surprised if the gunmetal just wears off from everyday use eventually.
On another note the screen and battery cover were 100 percent undamaged. Tough plastic surrounded by cheap metal, if the plastic is so fancy and strong, why didn't they just make the whole outer shell out of it? Geniuses.

That video was PAINFUL TO WATCH!!!! Good to know that our phone is pretty damn scratch resistance other than being struck by a direct blade attack as shown in the video. The guy kept commenting on how strong the Glass is. In the mix bag test, he says that the glass is clear. The pastic areas were scratched but the glass was okay he says. Btw, it's Korean.
edit : that's so awesome, they get Terrestrial DMB to stream TV whoa. guess they had this since 2000 lol
So I'm trying hard to keep my phone from getting even one scratch until my cases come in, which should be any day now.....
....then today I freakin' drop it on the concrete by accident.
I feel like $#!t ...my heart sank.... damn it!!!
BUT, on the bright side I am very surprised on how well it took the hit. The phone dropped and actually rolled a couple of times, yet it only marked up the plastic/metal looking trim that goes around the phone.
By any chance do you think the rim piece would be available later for a replacement part? Gosh I sure hope so. I'm desperate to go rip off the trim at the T-Mobile store
...I keep telling myself....it could have been worse right?
Bottom line: For how hard it hit the concrete, I'm impressed...since it was dark I was thinking it was going to be way worse, until I held it to the light to see the damage. Thank goodness for not a cracked screen....
BTW: I have the 3M screen protector. If it wasn't for that it would have for sure had some mean scratches on the screen....sigh..
Ouch.. I did the same with my new Touch Pro (current phone) and it also ended up with some dings on the sides, but that phone's partially metal with a plastic screen.
Since one of the frequent criticisms of this series of phones is the build quality, glad it looks like the Vibrant's made pretty well after all if it can survive that with only cosmetic damage.
you should put a warning in the title, those pics are way to graphic.

A gel skin would cover those up nicely. I decided to get one in the first place because even though I love the feeling of this phone without the skin on, I hate scratches/dents a lot more.
I had a bad track record with my G1 too... dropped it like 4 times
You should link me to where you bought your screen protector. I got Tmobile generic ones, but they suck, so I bought one from eBay. What I've got was this super thick, weird feeling protector, leaves too many bubbles, sucked. Bought another one, which is identical to ones you buy at the store, works good, but doesn't cover the bottom part of the phone.

The best one IMO is the one from clearfreak, which is the one I have. Just make sure when applying it, to follow their directions. You have to spray it with water, wet your fingers and squeegee the water out with the little tool it comes with.
It's made out of 3M and you can't even tell it's on. All the other screen protectors like the generic ones really mess up the touch response. It's not as responsive from what I've noticed. Stay away from chEapBAY if you know what I mean...those are all pieces of junk from china, hence 5x protectors for $0.99US

Very interesting you asked that because I was curious at first as well. However, I must say that once I did put it on, it didn't alter the quality at all.
As for it being sticky, I assume you mean on the surface when you glide your fingers across it right? Well...it depends if your hands are dry or not....it really doesn't bother me and I think it works fine...the only time it may be a little resistant is when your hands are sweaty. I think that would go for most all screen protectors though...
The official t-mobile "antismear" screen protectors are not only $14.99 USD (+tax), which is way to expensive, but after placing them on the phone they create a "rainbow effect", meaning that it leaves tiny dots of distorted color until the screen protector is taken off. This "rainbow effect" is present on all screen protectors but usually disappear after 2-3 hours of use, in these screen protectors, not so, the "rainbow effect" is constant, even after the microbubbles have been worked out. This is a definite do not buy.

dude, f that. i just gave up with asurion and told them where they can go. they will find any excuse to invalidate a claim. do NOT rely on them to be your safety net.

I don't think it's any worse than most anti-glare/fingerprint screen protectors. The main bad thing is that it doesn't even cover the full screen. If you want anti-glare/fingerprint I would suggest the SGP Steinheil Anti-Fingerprint. But it will still have the speckling like the T-Mobile one.
If you want clarity and don't care about fingerprints as much then I would definitely recommend the Realook as well.
I am a minority on XDA... I ordered a few matte anti-finerprint SPs from eBay a few days ago. It doesnt do the beautiful screen as much justice as naked, but the fingerprints/smudges/greasy swipe lines make me crazy. I think the TMobile protectors sound like the ones I have but I haven't had any rainbow or bubble issues thankfully.

I've had both, Zagg on my ipod touch and Realook on my vibrant. I prefer realook for the vibrant. Perhaps zagg has improved in the few years I've had my ipod.
I'm using the t-mobile anti smear screen protector. You do lose screen quality with it, but it's so nice having it hear in Miami with all the humidity the screen feels smooth most of the time. It's the only reason I got it to be honest, and I'll probably leave it on until I find a screen protector that is as smooth as this one
Man, I read "serious flaws" and all I could think about was maybe the ones they sell don't protect against scratches. That's a "serious flaw". Gunking up the displaying isn't that serious.
But anyway, I honestly just left the one that comes with the phone on. It's perfect. They are made a little too big though, so what I had to do was take it off, take a few mm off of the top, including the tab, and then take a few mm off of the side. I then ran it under hot water, used some dish detergent to wash the sticky side, rinsed real well, and laid it down, sticky side up, on a lint-free cloth to dry overnight. Once it's on and you have the gel case over it, you cannot tell it was ever cut. It looks beautiful and performs well.
Mine never came with screen protector lol

i put a zagg invisible shield on my ipod touch when i bought it, but then one day i noticed a minor imperfection and kept messing with it until i got fed up and ripped the thing off completely
since then i've come to realize that i'm a bit too OCD for these things. almost 3 years later and my ipod touch screen is just fine. i'm sure my galaxy s will be fine too, especially after watching all those torture test videos.
a touchscreen was meant to be touched, IMO. don't let it share pockets with keys or anything else and you should be good to go
(/mini-rant)
I can't say that relying on insurance is that bright of an idea. An insurance replacement is going to cost you $150.00, UNLESS they find a way to deny your claim, and can be mitigated, with a $10.00 screen protector.

i wouldn't file an insurance claim for a scratched screen. i just don't see a scratched screen happening anytime soon *knock on wood*
if there was some imperfection or malfunction i would probably try to find a reason to use the extended warranty. or, as the guy at the t-mobile store said, i could "hit the phone into the ocean with a golf club, and get a new one for $120."

I'm sure he followed that with -- "wink, wink". (I just signed up for TMO's insurance, so I have the fine print in front of me -- naturally, "intentional loss or damage" is excluded... but he knew that, of course).
Hmm, I see that "cosmetic damage" ("cracking, marring, or scratching") that "does not affect the manufacturer's intended use" is also excluded. So this wouldn't help for a cracked screen, as long as the phone isn't bricked or acting funky as a result.
I wouldn't rush to file a claim unless I really needed to... hate the thought of holding a refurbed phone to my ear that's been in someone's ass pocket. But if I really lost or destroyed mine, guess a $130 refurb beats a $500 new one...
The screen impacted the floor squarely and the phone was naked. Bottom panel popped out of alignment, though thankfully it could be popped back in. There's a new scratch at the bottom of the front. FFFFUUUUUUUU.
I mean sure, it still functions as normal--and to this I must testify for HTC's build quality--but ****ing **** ****. It'd be one thing if I was the one clumsy enough to drop it, but it's a co-worker's clumsiness which sent me into quite a rage. I was this close to demanding that he either buys me a replacement or gives me the money to buy one, because honestly ****ing **** is it so hard to be mindful of other people's belongings, especially expensive belongings?
God.
Yea, it really sucks to drop a naked N1. I remember walking out of the gym once and I pulled my keys out of my pocket. My N1 decided to go along for the ride and jumped right out and landed on the ground. I was so pissed at myself. After noticing the scratches, I cried a little inside. But it's okay though, I just remind myself that it's just a phone and I will be getting a new one in less than a year.
I've dropped my nexus so many times I've lost count.
It really does suck though, it's so damn expensive that it's almost a part of you.
I have dropped my phone also, not a N1 but a Droid and the first time i almost wanted to cut off my clumsy hands, but as DOHCtor says i remember it's just a phone and if by any chance was broken i could do nothing but buy another (Although at that moment i didn't have enough money to do it right away).
Fortunately my droid keeps working
Yeah, I'm glad it's still working and come some time next year I'll be getting a new phone, but grrrrr. Right now I don't really want to change yet because the phone's nice and I like it, and even if I managed to squeeze the dude for a new-phone fund, I'd have been quite heartbroken.
My next phone's going to be aluminium.

So you have your phone in your pocket with your keys? Seriously?
I dropped my phone once onto road, chipped a small bit off the top right, i felt terrible about it. Im very careful with it these days, i still haven't got any idea what a replacement phone would be like, the N1 is still the best imo.
noooooo you people are insane. or i am just OCD about chit like that. yes its just a phone if you look at it. however, that one scratch, nick or dent will haunt you til you get a replacement. I remember my first real cell phone back in the days. "NOKIA 8900" yes the slider. i cradled that thing like my first born. one day my friend asked to see it and she decided to close the lid by slamming the phone to the table. I nearly killed her. ever since then, when they ask, i say no and say its just a phone. LOL.
I don't know i am maybe little insane but i just cant over look the damage. i prob replace it or change out the casing. i done that many times. however, if you were looking to replace it no biggie.

Bummer! Hope u can fix it up. I keep mine in a bank safe
yeah i'm terrified of damaging my N1 that i just got and the guy i bought it from had dropped it once and it has a few dings on 1 side at the corners from it.
this is probably the first phone i've had that will stay in a rubber case most of the time. its just too thin and small in my clumsy hand to use without it i'm certain i would drop it and these screens break even easier than older phones did because the glass is so close to the edge of the housing.
my G1 however took many falls and the screen stayed intact. i was surprised how well it has held up. i used it for 2 years straight with no case.
to the guy who keeps his N1 in the same pocket as his keys, thats a recipe for disaster. remember glass is hard and brittle. when objects that are as hard or harder than glass touch, press or hit glass like a key or a rock the glass is more often than not going to break and at the very least get scratched and scratches if good enough can develop into a crack pretty easily.
i always have and always will keep my phone with screen facing my thigh in my pocket opposite of the pocket i keep my keys in

My next phone's going to be aluminium.

Aluminum scratches and dents worse than plastic! I'd choose plastic over aluminum. But that Liquidmetal material (a special patented alloy of titanium and other stuff that has no ordered crystal structure) looks pretty good; it might be tough enough. Hopefully more manufacturers will start using it.
Yall dont use cases?????

Actually, no, the nexus screen doesnt scratch easy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfqwKa4bT74
I don't usually put my keys and phone in the same pocket, it just happen to be in the same pocket at that time. And besides, my keys only consist of a car key and house key. It's not like I'm a janitor.
You could be the most careful guy in the world, but it just takes one bad drop and your phone could be done. I haven't seen it happen with the Nexus, but that's because no one I know has one. I've seen it with a handful of iPhones and other touch screen phones though.. It's well worth the investment to protect a $600 device

Exactly. You can't very well punch someone over a phone, people'd think you are a complete lunatic. But the urge is there. Oh, how it is there.

Good god, you think this video is real? It's faked, he's not pressing hard at all.
Besides, it's not the "one time" that'll necessarily get you, it's the "every day" stuff that gets you. The screen will get dull, the paint will start dulling.. There's zero chance I'll ever put my phone in my pocket with keys, coins, etc. In fact I rarely put it in my pocket at all, 99% of the time it's in my Krussel case.
Yeah I work in the glass industry the thinner the glass is the harder it is to scratch but the easier it is to break.
My nexus has a hand full of scratches on the screen

Hi, I recently got a Desire Z and I am trying to determine if a screen protector is necessary. I've already seen a thread arguing the issue in more general terms, but my question is simple:
Has anyone here scratched their screen from normal use?
I have a 2 yr old BB Storm and the screen is still flawless without ever being protected. I just want to know if I can expect the same of the HTC.
Thanks.
Cell phone screens are definitely stonger than you would think but it wouldn't hurt to put one on right? You know, as long as you don't keep it in a pocket with coins or keys in it. I haven't scratched mine in the time I had it without the screen protector but I feel much better with it on.

Dont't know.
The 1st thing i did was buy a screen protector don't want 2 take any chances. Please feel free 2 test your screen though & b sure 2 let us know how that works out 4 ya.

How about a real test. Let the knife fall point first about three feet onto the screen. This way it can simulate a fall. Lets see if the glass doesn't chip. My HD2 that the same "indestructible" glass. It chipped, not cracked, the first time it feel face down on the ground. Don't take a chance, slap a screen protector on it.
I agree I also had a hd2 and was able to put some scratches on that beast. I haven't put a screen protector on the g2 its been in and out of my pocket for about a week still flawless

I managed to scratch my g2 inside the first 2 weeks. Not sure how, probably something I had in my pocket.
In contrast, I went about a year with the N1 without scratching it. I am not sure if it is mere chance or if the G2 has a less scratch resistant screen but that is my experience to date.
i never put a screen protector.
no scratches what so ever.
but of course i take care that there is nothing in my pocket together with the phone
First time I got the G2 I slapped on the Tmobiles special screen protector.
The feel is different, smoother, and you won't tell if you have it on.
The screen feels sooo...like wow smooth.
Promise you,go check it out comes with 2 inside.
Its worth it.

There is a definite scratch in the middle of my screen, deep enough that you can catch your fingernail in it. The nice thing is that it's not noticeable when the phone is on.

I had the same type of scratch, deep enough that you could catch your fingernail in it, but it was higher up on the screen. I exchanged that G2 though when it stopped reading SD cards. I actually ended up fixing it before I sent it back because root came out and I was able to flash a new rom over it lulz.

Just get a screen protector from stealthguards.com
Their screen protectors are like anti-finger oil or something like that, cause when I swipe my phone with greasy french fry fingers, I barely see the streaks of grease on the phone.
And it's for free, with 2.95 shipping.
Took about a week to ship to me, and i'm up in Canada, EH.
My wife and I both have had G1s since preorder, neither with screen protectors, mine in my pocket (usually with nothing else) and hers in her purse with god knows what, and neither of them is scratched at all.
Says something for HTC's choice there, but I don't know that it's the same glass.
I haven't had a screen protector on my G2 since I bought it almost a month ago and I keep it on my pocket. Screen is still perfect.
Didn't have a screen protector on my N1 either and there weren't any additional scratches from when I bought it (had one small scratch from previous owner).
I have not managed to scratch my screen and my phone has met mr. hardwood floor once.
It's easy to prevent scratches/chips. Don't drop it, don't put it a pocket with other stuff, keep it away from kids/dogs/cats/parents/gfs/police/etc, don't lay it face down and don't go all high school girl and pitch your phone at a wall when someone makes you angry.
There go, AbsolutZero's guide to a scratch free phone lol.

just ordered one myself, couldn't believe this was free
I'm surprised my screen hasn't gotten scratched yet! I dropped it on a concrete patio with bits of broken vehicle glass on it, I was replacing a window and got carless and knocked the phone off the seat with the door card as I was putting it back together. Also dropped it at work, which is a big retail store.
What has gotten scratched and damaged however is the battery door. That I find to be a bit annoying, now it looks ugly.

It technically isn't.
They make a profit from "shipping".
I got mine in a normal everyday envelope.
Cost them lets say a dollar to ship it up to Canada.
They spent about 70 cents to make the protectors.
Their profit is about $1.20.

useful information, thank you so much
Yup, more profits if sending it somewhere in the US. 46 cents for a stamp, envelopes are dirt cheap, and bang!
