How to trick N1 into thinking its on WiFi? - Nexus One General

On my old iPhone 3gs, once jailbroken you could install an app called VOIPover3g and trick your phone into thinking it was on wifi even if you were only on 3g so you could overcome the restrictions on certain apps like skype (only lets you make calls over wifi) and youtube (better video quality on wifi)
Well, Vonage just came out with a great app for free domestic calls with GREAT call quality, but it only works over WiFi.
How can we trick the N1 into thinking its on WiFi even if its on 3g?

Well, for youtube. Just goto this thread and follow instructions on post #18.

[Q] Going outside the country for am extended period, can I skype?

Hey, I know you need to be in the verizon network to be able to use skype, but is there any way to make my phone think it's in the vzw network when I'm not hooked up to a tower?
I'm going outside the country for about a year, and will not have a cellphone, but will have access to wifi. I used a windows mobile phone last time with no issues. I ditched it a while ago tho, any way this can work?
I'm just thinking out loud but if you put the phone in airplane mode and connected to wifi you could test it w/o your vzw connection, just a thought.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I think airplane mode removes all data connection so wifi probably won't work :/
Sorry, but you're out of luck VZW purposefully crippled the Skype app so that it requires a connection to their network to use, and uses your plan's minutes in the process. Which basically makes it useless—how many people out there are really calling Skype contacts when they could be calling them on the phone instead??
You may have some luck with Nimbuzz; it's supposed to be compatible with Skype, although you never know how long that capability will stay in the app. Fring used to work with Skype, but no longer...

Thanks for the info. I almost forgot about nimbuzz. Works with only wifi enabled on skype.

I can attest to this. I used Skype (via Nimbuzz) over WiFi while I was in Spain two weeks ago. I'm surprised that it's still available within the app, considering Fring removed it. One thing I did notice was that Skype is no longer mentioned in the app description but is definitely on there as an account.
I think just recently Skype added WiFi capability. Might want to check into that.
Also, you may want to try SipDroid in combination with some cheap/free VoIP service.
SipGate/Gizmo5, etc. If you can't find a Free one that fits, look into Vitelity.net as a pretty good low cost provider.
Skype enabled WiFi for presence/text ONLY. Calls via Skype still require 3G.

Make/Rcv Phone Calls Sipdroid including video conferencing

I dont know if you guys already know this but if you are kind of annoyed by switching or waiting around for the firmware to have phone enabled. You can tried this anyway:
1. sign up for google voice if you haven't already, install apk
2. dl sipdroid from the market.
3. create an account and allow it associate with gv.
4. follow this guide
http://ifdefined.com/blog/post/How-...ee-calls-over-the-internet-using-Android.aspx
Note: The guide is only for receiving calls .
when you start the guide you should see GTALK under Trunk, / under inbound, 0 GTalk under outbound. You need this for out going calls.
if ipkalls says you already signed up that means someone already used your ISP ip address.
once you are done you should be able to make and receive calls with 3/4G or wifi...edge is kind of crappy
BTW, you can disable it under settings calls Call Screening and toggle off and confirm...so you dont have to dial 1 anymore just pick up the phone and use you BT headset.
enable 3g in sipdroid settings and now you have a phone
This also works on other tabs as well. I tested it on Galaxy Tab Tmobile(simple mobile), Galaxy Tab Sprint(wifi), Archos 101 (wifi), Zenithink wifi, Haipad wifi, and a Wifi'ed G1 works great.

Actually I use bluetooth and it works just as good on 3g as wifi while driving even. Any problems with call quality are the result of a poor 3g connection, not bluetooth.
Seems like it forks with a2dp
Alternatively, you can use fring once you are done with setup. Go to add ons and add sip info.
You can uninstall gv so you dont have to have so many dailer options

Ah, Im not using an A2DP headset at the moment, but a Voyager Pro, which is working great with every phone Ive used it with.
I've tried doing a video call using sipdroid and the image was on its side. Did they update this?
From the Tab.

The front facing camera seems bounded to portrait. I do not see any options on display it in landscape. I somehow fat fingered and got the other camera to function
BT head set Nokia BH-503 brain farts it has A2DP.
$14 PoS BT earpiece Nokia BH-104 works.
Kenwood DNX-6160 works as well.

Hi, regarding your video, it helps me a lot. Actually, I'm a student with a course in computer tech major in video editing. As per my instructor, he wants me to look for some of the best video makers using my android device. As I'm searching on the internet only (https://lightmv.com/ )Lightmv online free video maker. However, I need more video-makers to pass it to my instructor. if you know anything please don't hesitate to respond to my post. Thank you very much. much appreciated if you response quickly.

Skype voice working on streak

Hi all, I'm planning on switching over to the streak, and have searched for this but the "answers" I found aren't conclusive or dont really apply. Here's my background. I am currently grandfathered with ATT on an unlimited PDA personal data plan, with no voice. (i have a business cell for voice and ATT's network is faster and is perfect in the areas I visit, as well as my home which is the reason I opted not to get a voice plan since id rarely use it) So SOMETIMES I use skype (i have a skype out accout and skype #) to make voice calls if I leave my business cell at home/batt dies or whatever. My question is,
1: does the skype app work to make phone calls, (without frezing the phone). I do not need video chat, I just want voice calls to work. Also if it does work, what rom does it work on well? I not afraid of rooting and moding the device, im coming over from the Captivate which basically needed custom roms to function the way it SHOULD.
Q2: how well would you say gps and wifi tether work on whichever rom you recommend? Turn by turn nav work fluidly, or does it randomly throw you in the woods/ half a mile away like my Captivate?
Thanks in advance!

I've downloaded and installed Skype but haven't tried using it yet. With Rogers (Canada) official 2.2 ROM, Skype showed up in the Market, which it didn't when it was under 1.6
I have owned many android phones and i must say that the streak works great with skype. I've been talking for over an hour yesterday and i didn't have any issues (both 3g and wifi). 10+ for Streak
For gps navigation i use Copilot and works great also. My rom 2.2 - 318 EU
Doesn't work for me on 3G. Says not supported on 3G. Rather annoying.

Do a bit of googling and you'll find a "cracked" version of Skype that'll work over 3G.

Am surprised you cannot use Skype over 3G. The version I got from Market works over 3G ... Perhaps your carrier blocks it?

I should have specified, I am in the US on AT&T and they block it from being able to make voice calls over 3g. I tried the cracked version because thats what I used on my old Captivate and it didnt work on the streak. Depending on which cracked version you download, one doesn't even run (i believe the one intended for non-rooted/for people with preinstalled skype already on their phones) and the other package with is intended for rooted users: when I make a call it says call ended right away, then i try to make another call and skype tells me i have to hang up my other call before I make a new one. Kind of disapointing :/

in the us its limited to wifi only to appease to the carriers. or so they say, i think its because skype doesnt want to upgrade their systems to handle the traffic. att used to be able to block skype from using 3g on the iphone, and now the iphone is capable of calling and video chat on 3g while android users get no love. tbh, i dont care if i have to use wifi but i really do want video chat.
Try oovoo. It sounds lame but works beautifully both voice and video. Much much better than Skype on android, which never worked for me on any handset.

I just downloaded and installed Skype from the Market. I unlocked my Streak and am using a T-Mobile SIM (data only). When I tried to make a call to one of my Skype contacts I got the message 'In the U.S., you can only make Skype calls over Wi-Fi.'
P.S. My Streak is so far unrooted...I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Bell Canada Atrix VOIP

as we all know, the AT&T Atrix has problem with most VOIP softare. Just wondering if the Canadian Bell version is also experiencing the same problem? If not, that means AT&T is doing more than just turning off HSUPA...
I bought a Bell Atrix two days ago and I am DEFINITELY having issue with Skype either thru. WiFi or 3G connection. I am unable to make clear calls and often encountered LOUD STATIC sound on the earpiece.
Please assist...

IM+ Talk Skype Calling
Just an update to using the newly purchased IM+ Talk, a web-based Skype calling service. Well, it took me a whopping two-hour to figure out how to make calls and it was super frustrating...I subsequently had to purchase another Skype subscription (unlimited world, in addition to my original unlimited calls to Hong Kong plan) because of the call-back feature IM+ Talk uses.
So how it works is that you enter the CALL BACK number of the device you are calling on, enter the number you want to call, press the CALL button, and then your device will ring. Answer the call and you will then hear your number connecting. I don't know how to clearly explain it but it works on my Atrix thru. 3G connection
.Eric
im using an att atrix on Fido in canada and i can use skype just fine. i think its att network that is blocking this somehow not the atrix itself or maybe the combination of the two. so if a bell atrix allows voip on bell network it might still not work on att network.
I am using a Bell Atrix on Rogers and am having a hard time using the Skype for Android to work properly. I previously used Skype on my iPhone 4 (also on Rogers) and it worked like a charm...
I am surprised that it's working for you on Fido. There is a big thread from the Motorola support forum that discusses about this issue.
BELL Atrix ain't working on Fido. none of VOIP apps is, tried Tango, Skype from Market, Skype hacked for 3G, SIPDroid Csip, Fring........
Sux....
sorry I made a mistake. it doesn't work for me the sound is horrible. I only install and made a call and assume it was working.
If the problem with Skype is sound quality it may be that Skype needs updating to support the phone properly. In my experience with Galaxy S the sound quality was horrendous for the first while (that Skype was even functional) until updates sorted things out. Actually it took a while to even be able to login, when it could first be installed it wouldn't accept any login info. Picky program.
Atrix, Skype, IM+, ClickTalk, Tango vs Bad Audio
I've the same problem as all you and i've try the following apps like Skype, Skype(3G), IM+, ClickTalk, Tango and Yahoo....
All exept the Yahoo is work badly with the audio, it cutting off and here i'm talking about using WIFI connection ... with the 3G forget about-it.
Only Yahoo look to get a good result and not mentionning that only the Qvix, Yahoo and Tango as the Video working correctly
As winner the Yahoo Video and Audio work over WIFI.
I'm using also the SMSSpeak, Call Annoncer and EmailSpeak, the playback are for unknown reason playing back too fast. To fix Reboot the phone, i think the audio driver as something to do here too.
I've read also for our Bell Canadian friend that the Firmware is out of date... like far away ... AT&T as the patch to fix this problem of audio in the next release 1.57 and BELL CACA is still at the Beta 0.83 no fix planned!
After chatting with a tech at Motorola we can't dream for a new version until the new kernel will be availlable to get the Android 2.3 (What a great one i was using this on a real google G1 this is a real charm) ... So since we known that BELL, ATT and Motorola are not reading our note, it's useless to try the get them to move ... exept to get everyone who as a Atrix to Call/Email/Fax Motorola,Bell,ATT,Fido ....
and btw Moto is coming with a new phone... they act like this is just junk hardware like a batterie. Change phone to fix.

I too would be willing to donate to this cause. However, I've been testing with GrooveIP over Wifi, and it works extremely well. Call quality is excellent and you can use it for incoming and outgoing calls without using your plan minutes. I'm using the $5 pro version which integrates with the native dialer, so you makes calls just like you would normally. I know this isn't the same thing as T-Mobile's Wifi calling, but it's a good solution nonetheless.
Best chances of it happening will be when opitmus g with JB is released by T-Mobile. Need system dump with rils, maybe some libs and maybe an apk will be in there. That's what we had to do with the G2 and many older devices when ICS came out. But might be a few months before u see anything. I heard rumors T-Mobile are setting up SIP support but its just rumors
I second the endorsement of GrooVe IP. I don't have my N4 yet (caught in Play Store limbo, like so many others), but in anticipation I've been testing GrooVe IP lightly on my LG G2x and have found it to be very good, with audio quality noticeably better than wifi calling.
sipdroid with a free pbxes account. disable all codecs except speex. excellent.
I really wish google would improve the native sip client...
i'm in for $30 for nexus 4 wifi calling. a lack of wifi calling is only thing holding me back from getting a nexus 4. I have zero tmobile signal inside my house.. (okay, a little at one corner, but not where my home office is.. )
I'd love to get a nexus 4.. but only if it has wifi calling.. even if it is a terrible cm7/gb2.3 hack to get it working.. Obviously, IMS calling would be best.. but as long as it works..
I use groove Ip for my wifi calling. I fwd all my calls to my phone anyway since google voice is my main number, when I get home and connect wifi, groove IP takes over and I receive calls on my phone anyway.
I haven't had any issues using this method on the nexus 4.

Using your Nexus 4 for wifi calling with Groove ip do the people ever mention echo or dropped words? I ask that because using my tablet for such calls I can hear a little of both. I have fixed some of it via settings for Groove ip but it is still there some and I was wondering if it worked better with the phone?
It might be possible if the T-Mobile version of the LG Optimus phones with the same hardware have it. Assuming someone can hack it together, and the differences in OS aren't a show stopper.

My testing has mostly been by calling my other voicemail line and listening to the recording, so it's only been short segments, but I haven't detected any echoes or dropouts so far.
I've made hour long calls to landline and mobiles with absolutely no drops or issues. In fact the quality is better than what I experienced on vzw. I would say it is on par with my FiOS landline phone. It will of course depend on the quality of your WiFi connection, particularly jitter and latency.

I had echoing when I first used it, but solved it by enabling the basic echo canceller. It send a beep when the call connects then auto magically adjust the device for echoes.
Haven't had a problem since.

Has anyone tried Bobsled for this?
u are not alone in this hunt... good news is... 2013 is a good year for voip.
so first off all let me just tell u, ive been hunting for a good FREE VOIP, 4 wayyy to frigging long.
but i have finally got the perfect COMBO of apps that get the job done, and might i add quite well too!
first go set up ur google voice account and get u a free number....
download google voice.... pray ur phone has had service at one point or another....and google acceepts ur phone to allow u to use google voice (google voice is a pain in the ass to get it to register sometimes)...for some reason they want only people with active service to use their service... which makes no sense at all.....but... sometimes those free texting apps that give u 10 FREE minutes calling will do it....
then go download gv+ or mo+ (same friggin thing_ same devoloper) - seems like when one is acting up i can uninstall it and download the other and it will work perfectly for about 2 months then i gota switch back to the other again... its odd...
but i can call anywhere in america for free.... no questions asked... as long as i download voice and install it also. idk
i actually use voice for all my texting and then when i wana call sum1 then i use the mo+ app. and it works flawlessly. no weird numbers, no grainy calls, no echo... its wonderful!
