touchscreen and screen protector - Nexus One General

Today I put my nexus in my pocket with the car keys in a moment of stupidity and scratched the protector pretty good. I removed the protector and the screen was fine thank God. I immediately noticed how responsive the screen and hardkeys are. I used to have occasional touchscreen problems but since then everything is perfect, especially the hardkeys.
I wonder if anyone else has had this experience?

What brand protector were you using?

Skinomi TechSkin
My friend works at a place in the mall and I get them for free

Yup, I removed my clarivue a few days ago cause I got a scratch on it. I immediately noticed how much responsive the screen is sans a screen protector.

Yup,but I only got the protector for the anti glare, I probably won't be putting on any other screen protector, I've dropped my phone screen down on gravel without a screen protector and nothing happened to the screen, but the case did dent , so I'm not worried about it scratching

hows ScreenGuardz , ZAGG and lexerd ?

Don't think there is a need for a screen protector on newer capacitive touchscreens (like on the N1). Did you guys see the video of the guy who try to scratch his screen, but couldn't manage to do it? If I did it up, I'll post the link.

Sent from my Nexus One

I have a protector on mine, not because I'm afraid of the screen getting scratched but because I can't stand the fingerprints and the mirror-like reflection on the bare screen. (I'm using an anti-glare protector, of course.)

Tryed a few but got rid of them. Don't need them for my N1, since the touch screen seems to work better without.

I'm in the same boat as some of you guys. I used screen protectors for a while, normal ones, anti-glare ones etc. I also used a case for a couple of months (2 different ones) and I just stopped using them as well.
Just no need for cases or screen protectors in day to day use. I have one small scratch on the screen and I got that in the first week I had the N1, nothing has happened since (and that's over a year now).
I do keep my Otterbox Defender around for hiking, going out in a boat and stuff like that, but for day to day use it's just not neccesary.
And yes, it's a lot more responsive without screen protectors, even though you do get used to the lower responsiveness pretty fast.

Like many have said, I don't use the screen protector for screen protection, I use it to get rid of the built-in mirror and fingerprint smudges.

Same here. The fingerprints kill me without it. Plus I feel safer giving the screen a good wipe with papertowel and water with the protector on.

Poll: Screen protector?

I am still not 100% sure about if I need a screen protector or not.
Deciding factor is if it is possible to scratch?
Has anyone scratched there screen yet?
Lets do a poll to see if people are trusting the glass or not?
This glass seems scratch proof from most posts. I would only get one if there are Fingerprint resistance and Anti-Glare issues.
I won't get a screen protector for mine, shouldn't be necessary - I'm careful and don't keep keys in the same pocket. I had my i8910, also a glass capacitive screen, for six months and the screen is pristine.
I bought mines from htc direct yesterday, will post results on how the screen works afterwards.
I really need screen protector because i scratch all my phones, so lets keep this one new as long as I can.
well, imho the glass should be enough to handle your nails, keys etc... but i would suggest a pouch, or flip-it case, because that glas may shatter when dropped to ground (it does happen from time to time... my g/f dropped my phone twice, and me... maybe 3times)
I can't trust the glass and with a good reason my screen is cracked.
It's going back to HTC I've got to call them later today.
So yes I'll be fitting my screen protectors (that turned up the same day the phone broke)
I've voted on the too late option
Brando has them available on their website!

In fairness, scratched and cracked are very different things.
How did you crack it?
A screen protector will not stop a screen getting cracked it will only protect against scratches.
I don't intend to get a screen protector for mine, I've used them on my previous touch-screen phones and they've done a good job in protecting the plastic screens, but with the HD2's capacitive screen being glass it should be resistance to scratching anyway. Fingerprints are a minor problem, but then they are on any touch screen device.
The htc screen protector will stop the proximity sensor to work properly.
I have already tested the Brando Ultra Clear screen protector and the proximity sensor works without problems.
However, the "touch sense" is much inferior when compared to the naked glass.
I am thinking to remove it.
Iam using this screen protector from first day (Used the device for few hours without screen protector initially to test the sensitivity).
I don't find much reduction in sensitivity. Instead, i find the sensitivity to be perfect with the screen protector.

The mrs pressed the screen and it just gave way, it hadn't been dropped or even used that much. Can't figure out what happened tbh the LCD part is fine and it still responds to key presses.

The problem is not the phone but the htc's screen protector
Can someone confirm if the official HTC screen protector messes with the proximity sensor?
I've just ordered myself a few of these...

They're a bit pricey, but they sound ideal. I especially like the fact you can take it off, wash it, and put it back on. I'm forever going through screen protectors because I'm such a pedant! One single speck of dust, and I take it off! lol

It's very fair to say that a screen protector wouldn't have done a thing to help that. Glad to see HTC being so prompt about providing a replacement though.

It doesn't mate.
I briefly had a screen protector on mine and everything functioned as normal. I know for a fact that the proximity sensor works because I just tested it by sticking a bit of the discarded protector over it and making a call.
Everything worked just fine.
Edit: Sorry - just noticed you're talking about the official HTC ones. I'm not.
You said you briefly had a screen protector. Why did you take it off?
I don't put a screen protector on my watches so I don't see why I should on my HD2 either. I have always put screen protectors on plastic-fronted handsets but now they are going with glass I don't see the point. After all, if you look after it it shouldn't get scratched now!

No Screen Protector

Hi all,
anyone not using a screen protector? how is the hardiness of the glass? is it scratch resistant?
thanks!
i got the phone the 1st day it came out at t mobile and haven't used a screen protector since and i think the screen is pretty good i've only put it in my pocket once though. the screen looks just like when i bought it.
I have went a week without using a screen protector and I am just fed up with the smudges on the screen and I am going to just buy the Invisible shield and hopefully have it by the weekend. They are amazing products.

the glass screen is durable enough. i don't think you need a screen protector. you will probably break it before you scratch it.
Had the HTC rep come in my store today. He saw i had a screen protector and laughed. He was like you should know better man you dont need a screen protector. He grabbed my store keys and began to grind them on his screen with a fair amount of pressure and not one scratch i was impressed.

seriously? yeah i also sent them an email regarding why it has no screen protector, this is my 4th htc and all of them came with a screen protector except this one being their flagship phone and huge screen. they did say it is scratch resistant and no screen protector is included and needed.

Anybody Buy The TMO 'Sreen Protector'???

just wondering how many people bought the official TMO US screen protectors for the hd2? they came in a two pack for $14.99 (!!!), but i figured screw it and bought them, that way my fiance and i could have "protected screen." i put them on immediately, even before turning it on. seemed ok, not the clearest material used, made the screen sorta frosted looking.
anyways, after a month the two bottom corners never laid pergectly flush on mine and dust way getting between the uplifted areas of the cover and the screen. so i decided to peel it off and go naked without a protector.
so far i am liking it WAY better. screen seems way more crisp and clear. and the accuracy for Swype is MUCH better. not nearly as many typing errors. only downside is that you finger needs to be pretty dry, otherwise it doesn't glide to well.
just seeing what other users are thinking about it?
i'm doubtful that i will be replacing the cover
As with many things in life, it's always "better" to not use protection! However it's not as safe... I also DO NOT use a screen protector, my girl friend does and I notice the difference when having to use her phone.
I tried my phone for the first 2 days without a screen protector and almost always had to rub my finger on my shirt first so it can glide on the screen. And the smudges were a lot. I guess my fingers leak oil .
After 2 days, I put on a screen protector and its been fine for now. The screen did look a lot better without it.

"the screen protector also comes with an installation squeegee, a bottle of application solution" makes me nervous, but it looks like it would be good
I've read 2 stories on this forum where members have tried the "wet application" of screen protector and they ended up with water under their glass. The solution I read was to place the HD2 in Silica Gel or Rice for a week.
I have always put invisible shields by Zagg on my gadgets .
I heard about the rice if you happen to get your phone wet.
Will see how the "application" goes I guess.
The screen is supposedly made out of a virtually indestructible indium tin oxide which is ultra resistant to scratches and scuffs. For this reason I don't use a screen shield. I have probably cleaned my screen with every thing I can wear and its yet to be scratched.
I'm using the T-Mo screen protector. It's okay, but my primary reason for using it is because without it, the naked screen smudges like a mo-fo. When this one wears out, I'll probably go without for a while, but for now, it doesn't bother me.
I had the same cloudy looking protectors from Tmo .. and dust starts getting into it too soon. Then i took it off and wow, I was blinded by the brilliance
of the glass
Then I ordered zagg invisible shield and got it fully covered. Works for me.
MUCH better than tmo ver ..

LOL yes, exactly the reason I'm starting to consider getting one...I love the glass screen, but I have to wipe the damn thing down all the time
I installed that screen protector I mentioned earlier, it was a little different because of the application spray, but it turned out really nice.....no bubbles of any kind and you almost don't notice the protector on it at all

Thanks for the feedback, I think I'm gonna give that one a try (they do have a model for the US Tmo HD2 also)
I use BodyGuardz Full Body on mine and the screen protector that came with it looks like it's not even there.
personally, I would never use a wet application screen protector. there are lots of non we application options out there, so why even bother?
That's what I thought too but decided to try it out....all you have to do is follow the instructions and don't over moisten the protector....I also let it sit face down over night on a small towel.
tmo screen
is a big thumbs up PERIOD worth every penny

Do you use a screen protector for your note?

I have a screen protector currently, but I'm thinking of taking it off.
What do you guys think? Are you folks using a screen protector?
I don't use screen protector because I want the best touch experience
I never used one on my DHD and I don't use one on my Note either.
I sure use one.
Recently I had a clean slice on my screen and I was worried that the cut might be deep enough to have gone through the screen protector and scratched my screen. So I took the protector off and thankfully the screen protector was enough to stop the scratch.
So it has it uses.
Putting a screen protector is a nightmare though because of dust particles, so whenever I want to put a screen protector on I view the screen under light at an angle to see if there is any dust particles on the screen. That way I can see even the "smallest" dust particle. So whenever I place a screen protector I take about 30 to 40 mins to put one on my Note. Also it's not like I change screen protector like a baby's dippers. The current one will be on there pretty much forever unless something like a scratch happens that will force me replace it. Otherwise it's pretty much a one time thing.
My screen protectors are very good quality ones.

I am using SGP Ultra Optics, touch is fine, just finger prints are still there.
I've had my Note for over six months without a screen protector, just a gel case, and not a mark on it. Whenever it's in a pocket it never shares space with anything else that might harm it such as coins or keys.
I didn't protect my ZTE Blade before it, my MDA Vario before that, or any other phone I've owned. I don't put protectors on the display of any of my several cameras, and none of those have suffered as a result either. The only device I've ever applied a screen protector to was my Palm Tungsten T3, and with the flip cover for that, that was probably the most unnecessary application of a protector to any device I've ever owned.
Never.
Hate them.
brought my first screen protector the other day, put it on and that night i was going for a run and my note fell out of my pocket and went across the road for 5 meters, screen protector saved my phone.
I used to but I don't anymore. My note fell any the screen broke so I had to get a new one. Now I don't use a screen protector but I use seidio gel protector. I like it better like this.
Zag is the best.

So you are saying you never have dust or sand particles in your pockets as those bastards are the ones scratching the screens. Keys or coins won't do it as they're softer than your phone's screen.
E: I am using a cheapo screen protector (7,99€ for two) and it does not affect the user experience at all.

I have two small children and because of that I spend some time in sand boxes. That sand is the worst when comes to making tiny scratches. I bought a copter shield a couple of weeks after getting the note due to scratches starting to emerge. I also made a deeper scratch with the help of a zipper, (which is embarresing since im closely related to the inventor of the zipper ).
I do have the feeling that the "Note" is a bit more sensitive than other gorilla glass endowed phones. Maybe it has a coating that scratches more easily or something...

I am seriously considering using my s7 edge without Screen Protector, What's opinion?

I bought s7 edge new...a few days ago...
I bought him a Screen Protector puregear, simple a bad screen protector.
And I can not find a good screen protector, In the meantime, I'm not using my s7 edge, because it.
I anyway not love screen protector, so I thought maybe... I will use my s7 edge without a screen protector
Would be very happy to hear your opinions, worthwhile or not ?
If you can elaborate This will help me, thus I will learn more.
Thanks!!!
I'm using it without one too, but I use the leather cover from Samsung(not the flip cover). Just as drop protection and because the phone is very slippery without one
I've spent more than 50$ on screen protectors still haven't find anything that last longer than a week. Somes peeled off, somes have touch issues so i decided to just use my phone naked. The phone hold up surprisingly well for the past 2 months, not any scratches even when i did drop it twice and there were some dents on the benzel.
---------- Post added at 06:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:25 PM ----------
My advice is u should definitely buy a case since the phone is pretty slippery and the benzels are so thin that u might find ur fingers resting on the screen causing touch issues.
Screen protectors are all personal preferences. From what i know, it limit the beauty of the screen, harder to see in direct sunlight, and u cant use it underwater.
Why not using it with a flip cover (but w/o screen protector)?
Best of both worlds, you can show the phone off yet it is protected all-round.

I have both. The leather one is sheer class (and better protection), the slim line one is form fitting with less protection (but still a helluvamore than not using anything).
Both make the phone look superb.
I have my s7e from since it came out, i found that my diamond bling scratches the screen when i put it on my ear so bought a screen protector but lasted 4 hours, im not fund of screen protectors i like my screen naked. Have hundreds of scratches now.
who needs a screen protector? I've never used one since like 4 years and all my phones are exposed at least to dog bites (I'm a vet and the phone is always a curious thing for them), and never broke anyone
With the s7 edge I'm using it for three months and never used one, both crystals are like new, but I'm using a spigen case because samsung's sucks
I don't use a screen protector or any protection at all, and my device (which I bought in March, shortly after its release) looks just fine. No scratches on the body, and I only have a teenie tiny scratch on the screen, which isn't bothering me. If you're the type of person who throws his stuff around, then I'd get some protection. If you're like me and you love using your devices naked, then go ahead and do that. Just DO NOT keep your phone in the same pocket with your keys etc. That will 100% scratch up your phone. Keep it generally far away from metal parts, including metallic zippers on jackets/hoodies/jeans!
I've had mine since before the official release (Tmo FTW) and I've never had a screen protector on it. I do use a Spigen black TPU case, but my screen has 0 noticeable scratches on it. You can find one or two if the screen is off and you're looking for them, but if the screen is on, you couldn't see them if you tried.
i havent had a screen protector since day one and have to scratches on mine. still looks brand new
I got a WriteRight flex screen protector (film style) from Staples in Ontario, Canada. Came with 2. First one is still on and doing well to stop simple scratches from car keys and such. It seems like there are no good options for glass protectors due to the edge. I usually would always use a glass protector + skin on body. This time i have a case that is banana-shaped to protector the screen if it falls face down and the film protector for minor scratch protection. Decent combo.
I tried multiple screen protectors and all of them were actual garbage because of the edge screen. I've been using mine without a screen protector for the last few months. It's just not worth it to me to Cripple the device and stop the enjoyment of using it because of a bad screen protector or because I'm worried about a small scratch. I've had good luck I've got a slight scratch that cannot be seen unless you're really looking for it hard after 2 months. Biggest thing is keep your keys and pens out of your pocket that your phone is in

No screen protector here. No problems ;]
Just like @ flyinj54 said, I keep my phone in my left pocket by itself. Keys and whatever else I put in my right pocket. As long as you do that and don't drop your phone you'll be good.
I tried going protector-less for a while and discovered a small scratch from somewhere. I'm very careful with my phone and hate scratches. After trying a vinyl skinomi wet install which kept on denting/imprinting, a few cheap glass ones, i've settled on the spigen plastic protector, which has been working great!
I too have spend nearly £50 on screen protectors, haven't found a good one yet, and so I now use my S7E without screen protector.
I have spend some fair amount of money on case though, I have a Noreve case, and a Piel Frama's SlimFrama case.

I did that for a while with only the Samsung Flip Wallet cover. It was fine. found Skinomi matteskin screen protector that wraps around the edges, I love it! it reduces glare and also keeps grease and fingerprints off the screen. It has almost a rubbery vinyl feel to it.

Yes i can confirm this. Even at screen off the scratches are barely visible, you can notice only if you look close to the screen. For me it really makes difference, i mean the screen is much clearer without protector because most protectors tend to absorb dirt being plastic(with all of my devices i used before never had protectors), much crispier and brighter. I dont know its just my opinion.
It's really quite simple. Unless you want hairline scratches (or worse) within a couple of weeks you use a screen protector. No matter how careful you are, this is unavoidable simply from everyday use.
Personally, I use a Zagg HD Dry. I've had the same protector on my phone since the middle of March and it still looks virtually new (bar a few inevitable marks). And with my Spigen crystal cover, it's never curled up at the edges like a lot of people have complained about.
Bottom line for me (although I accept opinions vary), buying a phone worth over £600 then not protecting it with a cover and screen protector is madness.
