Lo all,
Posted this question over on another site but thought I would run it past you guys, too:
So Im taking a trip to Europe (Germany and Italy, predominantly) and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with swapping out sim chips on rooted magics? Running cursor's latest rom and would really like to grab a pre-paid sim (apparently they are fairly common over there) and throw it in my phone and use it in place of the ridiculous roaming charges Rogers would try to ding me with. Is it literally as simple as swapping sims? What about 'unlock codes' (dont quite get what is meant by this term)?
Anyone have any insights/experience?
Yes just swap sims assuming its unlocked. root and cursor is no prob I am writing this now from rooted rogers cursor magic in Europe

you would need to get an "unlock code" when you insert a non-rogers sim into the phone it will ask you for the "unlock code" enter it and boom your good to go. only needed to be entered once and then your phone is unlocked for good..you can get the code online for a small fee, or try your luck in the unlock code free give away in this forum..
have fun in europe..

Hi,
sorry if this has been posted before:
I'd like to know if I buy this phone from Carriers different from my local BELL carrier , would it be possible to unlock the Legend myself for FREE?
I know i can pay $20 to buy some unlock code to unlock the phone from several websites but im wondering if its something i can generate somehow using tools that the members has developped from xda?
Thanks
I am also wondering if I can unlock this bad boy for use on our Telus network here in Canada... Virgin Mobile has it as of right now, and Bell is going to get it on the 16th (that may solve your problem, OP) but I'm looking at buying it outright and unlocking it for Telus... Possible? and possibly free? or do I have to pay for unlocking? (never unlocked a phone before)

Been googling and so far nothing but PAID unlock codes...
but to answer your question... that's what the "unlocking" is for... once you unlock your phone you can use it on any carrier and therefore not locked to a specific carrier... yes Virgin has it so you can buy Virgin's Legend and use it on Telus once unlocked of course. You'll probably have some Virgin's and Bell's software on it which you cant use.
you can flash it with a unbranded firmware, "RUU", it's a exe file, lanch it from pc and it installs the new firmware just like a firmware update should work this way
I have the Virgin Legend and there are only two signs of any carrier customizations: A Self Serve App (it's actually a shortcut to Bell's site, and it doesn't even work) and a TV & Music App (which can't connect). I am guessing that they don't work because it's probably identical to the Bell Legend which has those on it, I don't think they're intended for the Virgin model, or at least they're not tapped into the system properly yet.
you can unlock for $10 at cellunlock.net with coupon code crackb50. got this from howard forums.
Thanks for the coupon code. I just used it now. $10 is a lot more reasonable than $20 (regular price was actually $30 but it was $10 off before the coupon).
I was going to get a Rebel SIM II shipped to me but Koodo released SIM cards today and I want to get this thing unlocked before the weekend. Hope typing in a number doesn't void the warranty.
Was hoping an owner could shed some light on the subject for me.
GSM arena says it has HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100, but I don't always trust that site as I've seen some wrong info on it.
Can anybody confirm that it has HSDPA 850 / 1900? Would love to use this on Rogers 3G network in Canada.
It seems that they are blocking the 850/1900 band. check out this thread/page:

I believe it will not work on any GSM carriers in the US or Canada. It will, however, work on GSM and UMTS carriers outside of US/Canada.

That is until the figure out how to fix that issue.
Thanks everybody. I haven't actually seen anybody try they phone in Canada yet but I've seen plenty of evidence that it is at least blocked in the U.S. It would be nice(for me at least) if they only block within the U.S. There are more countries than just Canada and the U.S. that use these frequencies. I'm tempted to purchase one and try anyways but with a $35 restocking fee and $15-$25 unlock code it gets a little pricey to just try it out.

nevermind, looks like I have to keep reading. It appears that it will work on other 850/1900 networks as long as you are out of the U.S. Now I have to find a decent price on an unlock code, upgrade the wifes BB 9000 to an iPhone4, sell the iPhone4 and hop over to a Verizon store and by this bad boy. Hopefully Rogers doesn't give me too much difficulty.
Thanks for the links everybody. Just got the phone working in Canada all for under $600 as well
Phone was $518.39 US after tax
Unlock code was 15.99 from CellUnlock.net
Few odd things. The iemi number was difficult to figure out. The 5's looked a lot like 6's. I found some site that checks imei codes and when I checked the imie with 5's as 6's instead it said it was impossible to be valid imei code. When I checked it as 5's it was a valid code.
After I unlocked the phone I tried to set the APN values but it wouldn't let me, however after a phone reboot HSPA data turned on. All is good now
How did you actually unlock the phone? I called Verizon and they gave me the unlock code but said it won't unlock until I take out the Verizon SIM and insert a foreign SIM. At that point, I'll be prompted to enter the code.

That's correct, and congrats on getting the Unlock code from Verizon. Everything I read said you would have to have an active account for 6 months before they give you the code.
All I did, was turn off the phone, take off the back, remove the battery, insert my Rogers sim card, put the battery back in, turn on the phone. When it booted up before it booted into the OS there as a screen asking for the SIM unlock code. I just entered the code and hit continue. Voila. Oh yeah, I had to restart the phone to get the data to work.
Looking at your profile you're from the U.S., so unlocking it wont allow you to use it on any network in the U.S. except for Verizon(they've locked it in the radio firmware), however if you're planning on traveling it'll be great.
Hello, I have bought a Droid Pro and was looking for some alternatives to eBay unlocking. You have mentioned Cellunlock.net, but I wanted to ask you what option you selected? I ran a search in that site and I did not find the Droid pro listed. Did you pay for the plain Motorola "any phone" unlock? Thanks for the info.

That is correct. The generic unlock any Motorola phone.
I live in Canada and I want to buy a Droid Pro. Is there currently a way to buy a *UNLOCKED* *UNACTIVATED* Droid Pro (off eBay) and activate it outside of the US?
Thank You
Google this:
how to bypass android activation screen on Motorola Droid
I have seen the posts about being able to touch the corners of the screen but that doesn't seem to promising and I would need that conformed before being able to buy it. Also if I were to travel to the US would it automatically start using verizon? Thank You

Well honestly I can't confirm any of that Because I got my Pro off eBay, pre-activated and ready to go. I unlocked in Kuwait on a Kuwaiti SIM card using the code provided by the seller.
Ehem.. I think I just answered your question Just make sure that the seller already activated the phone
For a phone to be pre activated does it have to be used or is there another way for the seller to activate it? Thank You.
Look through this thread:

A lot of people have had problems with unlocking the SIM card unless it was activated by Verizon first in the U.S. Your best bet will probably be to get one that has already been activated and unlocked. After that's been done, you should be able to bypass the activation screen following a factory reset and use whatever SIM card you want. It won't start roaming on Verizon if you have a foreign SIM card in there. Actually, it won't roam in the States at all on GSM, regardless of whether you have a foreign SIM or not. The U.S. GSM bands are locked out and can't be used.
I am planning a trip to Europe soon. My Att Atrix is rooted and unlocked running cm9, but not unlocked for different SIM cards.
What do I need to do to have my phone work in Italy, and Denmark. I was just going to pick up a SIM card at the airport.
Do I need to flash a international radio? What provider should I buy a SIM from? Anyone recommend a specific unlocking code provider?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
1. You should buy an unlock code (I bought from ebay, 99 cents).
2. Buy sim card from GSM provider.
3. you're set.
Call ATT and ask them for unlock code. they should be able to provide it to you for free if you are a customer.

AT&T used to provide unlock codes free if you had an account more than 90 days old. Then they changed to "the phone has to be released more than a year ago". Now they've changed again, not sure but I think back to 90 days.
Call them and ask, when you say you are going overseas they should ive you the code if their timeout has been met.
The Atrix IS a GSM 4-band international ready phone, no need to monkey with that. Unless your mods changed something, it will use the right band wherever you are.
As to which provider...ask about rates and coverage for each area you'll be in.
The unlock code from AT&T cannot actually be applied until you try to turn on the phone with an "alien" SIM card in it, so once you get the code you might want to borrow a TMobile or other SIM so you can confirm the code actually will work for you. (Or buy a cheapie here.)

Good information. I'll be honeymooning in Mexico this summer and thinking of leaving my Note at home and bringing my trusty Atrix with me.
Mod Edit
As long as you are using Straight Talk "AT&T" nothing needs to be unlocked. You are still on AT&T, but just using a high-lag MNVO.
WHICH carrier is your Straight Talk SIM card using? Straight Talk resells service from all four major carriers.
If you're using Straight Talk "T-Mobile", then you've got a problem.

You probably dont need a pay service or any service at all to sim unlock it. AT&T has a website to unlock phones if they meet the criteria you just enter the info and they unlock it if you qualify.
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/
Should have bought a Verizon model in that case since they come sim unlocked.
They unlock it only if you do not owe any money of the phone

just a quick experience share. I've tried the service from the first post (Mod Edit). my s8+ was locked with a highest level of encryption (hard locked) by carrier, so delivery time was around 12 hours. price was 26 $ ( 13 $ first charge + 13 $ pending amount for hard locked phone). unlock code worked well from the first try and phone is unlocked now (switched from t-mobile to vodafone because they have better mobile data speed). thanks for the link. cheers

Deutsche Telekom is the parent company of T-Mobile and that brand is used in some European countries, besides the U.S. At one point, 13 countries had "T-Mobile".

This really sucks for me. I contacted them before ordering sim Unlock for T-Mobile USA. They said since all the services are down for T-Mobile through the official app they are doing it differently where I will have to use an app made by them to enter the unlock code. Everything was fine until today when I got email from them with unlock code and Network Unlock app. I followed there instruction but their app does nothing. its useless, its like a dummy app.
App says "Connecting to server..." while it doesn't even have internet access permission. I checked by disabling the wifi and mobile data, it was still functional (as expected because it had no internet excess) it prompted me to enter unlock code but it does nothing except for saying Permanently Unlocked it literally does nothing else after entering the code. Later on I tried entering wrong codes as well and it would still say Permanently Unlocked. I have sent them multiple emails and messages but no reply yet.
I am guess the unlock code they provided might be correct but there is no way to enter it on phone since it is T-Mobile variant and only Device Unlock App can enter the unlock code.
I bought a ATT version on day one of release and paid full retail at Best buy. Figured I can unlock via their site. Nope, in fact the IMEI # wasn't coming up at all. Kept saying it was not in the system. I called ATT but they couldn't help so I returned it and bought the Verizon version and works fine on Tmo via MintSim. Only bad thing is I have to use desktop software to update since it's not on the Verizon network.
Mod Editis having a 2 day sale 30% off for $13 (vs $19). How can you tell if your phone is "hard locked"?

I'm assuming the VZW version is sim unlocked out of the box?
Correct, all their LTE phones are unlocked but they may not have the bands required for whichever provider one is looking to use it on. The S8 has the most bands that I read of the US releases though
Only cost £10 on eBay for a unlock code
I tried androidsimunlock.net who are my usual go to guys and they couldn't do it. So I paid at samsungsimunlock but haven't heard anything back yet. It's been over 12 hours, I've even emailed to follow up but heard nothing.
Anyone else used these guys successfully?

yes, my phone is from t-mobile. do you mean pre-installed t-mobile device unlock app? I have tried to unlock my phone using that app too but with no success. every time I hit the unlock button the phone just displayed an error.
samsungsimunlock com provided Network Unlock app and after I've completed all steps from the step by step guide it said "your device is permanently unlocked". I've rebooted the phone with my vodafone sim card and the phone accepted it. also I have tried orange and three carrier sim cards, they all are worked well also. 4g/LTE is working well too :victory:

I followed their steps too but no luck yet. I have no idea why it does not work for me. After I was frustrated I decided crack down their app a little bit. It doesn't have any phone permission, I am guessing it cant put Unlock Code for the phone and the other thing is I tried some random numbers and it still said Permanently Unlocked.
Do you need to have the app installed all the time or is it fine to remove afterwards?
