help.....

Ok now before I start... I did search and all that but im still kinda confused. Ok so I got a droid x and I want to root it and install the jrummy rom. I got z4root but im confused on the boot strap and how to install and how it works.... im not new to rooting as I rooted my droid 1 and droid incredible in the past. All info is welcomed and thanks in advance.
The bootstrap allows you to take and restore backups. You can also use it to flash update.zip file for themes/roms/mods
If you google koush dro id x bootstrap and search around on the forums here u can probably find the answers you are looking for. If you have specific questions post back here and I will do my best to help out!
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I am by no means an expert at android. I was really into Windows Mobile until the last couple of months but was fed up with what MS did with Phone7 -so I just made the jump to android.
Root with Z4root first. then first thing create a back up so if something goes haywire - you are covered. I actually create 2 just in case.
To create your nandroid backup go to the android market and get Droid X Bootstrapper...
1. Open Droid X Bootstrapper.
2. Click "Bootstrap Recovery".
3. Get the "Success" message. Click "OK".
4. Click "Reboot Recovery".
5. Your phone will reboot into recovery (not the factory recovery -a hacked recovery).
6. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-backup and restore".
7. Use the red camera button to hit enter.
8. A new screen will open and your cursor will already be on "Backup".
9. Use the camera button to hit enter.
10. Your phone starts the backup process (black screen with a small open box and a little android). It takes about 5 minutes to complete the backup.
11. When it is done you will get a "Backup complete!" at the bottom and will it will automatically go back to the first page and your cursor will be highlighting the "-reboot system now" option.
12. Press the red camera button to hit "enter".
13. Your phone will reboot.
14. You have created your nandroid
If you dont have the app "Root Explorer" you need to give up the couple of bucks or whatever it is and get it. You can try some free file explorer apps and see how they work for you -but Root Explorer is worth the $ and I will refer to it in instructions.
Flashing the rom... I will use an example for this rom...
Apex 1.3
It is the rom I am using. It is stable and functional. It uses the ADW.Launcher as a home replacement for Blur.Home.apk -so if you are not familiar with it it takes some getting used to (a little complicated as far as all the settings). It also uses the AOSP text messaging which I do not like (but it can be changed back to Blur.
You can use whatever rom you want- but the instructions will not be exactly the same. Whatever rom you decide on -MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS NOT MINE! Usually the first post of the rom thread will contain pretty clear instructions.
START WITH A FULL BATTERY!! I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY BLAH BLAH BLAH...
For example from the above thread...
-Place file on your sdcard. Bootstrap recovery and reboot recovery
-Navigate to mounts and storage. FORMAT data, and cache
-Return to previous menu and install .zip from sd card
-Choose ApeX and install!
Click to collapse
1. Download the rom.
2. If you use rom manager to download -you will have to find the rom which will be in a .zip file and it will be in some weird place in your phone's SDCard like
/sdcard/clockworkmod/download/fabdroid.com/downloads/
so you will have to move it to the root of your sdcard (meaning not inside any file folder -just on the sdcard.
3. So if you dont want to deal with that you can download from your computer and then place on your sdcard.
4. Open "Droid X Bootstrapper".
Click "Bootstrap Recovery".
5. Get the "Success" message. Click "OK".
6. Click "Reboot Recovery".
7. Your phone will reboot into recovery.
6. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-mounts and storage".
7. Use the red camera button to hit enter.
8. Use the volume rocker to move down to "-format data".
9. Hit enter (camera button).
(From here I am working on memory as I do not want to physically reflash the rom - so the instructions will not be quite as 100%)
10. You will get a "Are you sure?" message.
11. Go down to it and hit enter.
12. The phone will take a moment to format the data.
13. Use the same process to "-format cache".
14. Use the back button (the physical hardware back button) to return to the previous screen.
15. Go down to "-install zip from sdcard"
16. Hit enter.
17. Now all the files on the root of your sdcard will be listed. It is crucial that you placed the rom file on the root of your sdcard so that you can now choose it from the list. If there is no file to choose -you just completely screwed up and will have to perform the sbf. So hopefully you don't do that.
18. Use the volume button to select the Apex rom.
19. Hit enter (the camera button). I can't remember if you get a warning here - if you do - of course you want to confirm.
20. The new rom will load up.
21. If it does not automatically reboot then "-reboot system now".
The first boot up will take longer than usual. You will have to set up your phone all over again. If you have set up your phone properly then all your apps will download from the market automatically. If you have not set up your phone to do that than you will have to manually find your apps and download them.
Hopefully you are using Google to store your contacts and not Backup Asistant and the regular phone contacts. If you are using Google then your contacts should automatically be added back. If not then you are on your own bc I don't mess with Backup Assistant.
That is the best I can do with out physically flashing the rom and...
EVERY ROM HAS ITS OWN SPECIFIC INTRUCTIONS
You can use this as a guide but make sure you do what the rom developer says.
He pretty much explained everything you need to know, LOL
I personally like Darkslide V4. It is a very sweet ROM, but try different ones out and see which one suits you best.

Manual update from 8.4.4.11 to 3.2?

Hi,
Could someone please provide a link and instructions on how to manually update a US Transformer to version 3.2?
I have a problem receiving OTA updates (maybe because its a US version but I'm currently physically located in Israel) so all my previous updates had to be done manually.
Thank you
I had trouble applying the OTA manually. It was a pain.
If you are stock and NOT rooted, it's not too bad.
Download the US version of the update. There's a thread in the dev section I think.
Rename it to EP101_SDUPDATE.zip and save it to the root directory of the external micro SD.
Put the sdcard in the slot and reboot into recovery. You should see an android guy with a gear belly for 5-10 mins. Wait and be patient until you see your homescreen again.
To get into recovery, turn off the TF. Hold the volume down button and press the power button. As soon as the screen come on, you see some text at the top. Press volume up to boot recovery. If you wait too long, it will wipe your data, so back up anything important.
If you are rooted and/or you have a custom recovery, this probably won't work.

Well actaully I have already used the method you are talking about to update to the latest 3.1 (8.4.4.11). The problem is the update file which I'm missing.
I saw the next thread with the 3.2 file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190868
The problem is I have read in the thread that its an 8.4.4.5 to 3.2 update and nobody mentioned in the thread that he has successfully installed from this file.
The md5 hash for the 8.4.4.11 to 8.6.5.6 US update is 9dc8df6593c05381342558734e5bb97c
I flashed it with a completely stock system using the method I posted earlier.
I'm not sure about the other OTA updates floating around, but look for one with the same hash.
I can't manual update using the method you mentioned about.. I'm getting an "!" android.. any suggestion?

I reverted back to stock. using the ASUS 8.4.4.11 from their site.
Not sure why that wouldn't work, although the OTA script checks hashes pretty strictly. If anything is off, it won't apply. I think there is a thread floating around that talks about how to modify the OTA to be less strict.
I had trouble manually updating with the OTA- I had to go back to stock 8239 and apply all the updates sequentially. Of course, there are easier ways, but I was curious.
To get rooted 8656, you could use Roach's script.

what is the method you use to unroot and restore back to stock?
Hey guys here's a slight variation to gee one's method to update a stock unrooted 8.4.4.11 to 8.6.5.6 using the update file:
1. Move or copy the zip file to inside the \ASUS\update\ directory on a microsd card.
2. Rename the moved or copied zip file to "EP101_SDUPDATE.ZIP".
3. Power off the TF101.
4. With the microsd card inside the slot, hold-down the power and volume-down buttons simultaneously until two lines of code appear on the TF101. Release the power and volume-down buttons then push the volume-up button immediately.
5. The TF101 should now be flashing the update firmware, afterwhich, reboot the TF101 for good measure.
The difference is in the location of the ep101_sdupdate.zip file, nothing more.

I think it is /ASUS/Update/ - this is one of the methods that I didn't try.
I think that recovery also looks for something called ASUS_Bundle.zip, but I haven't seen much about that at all.
So a letter's case, which is a non-issue in windows, is relevant in android? Good info.

You might have to put it there and boot the system. Supposedly, the TF will find it and post a notification by the clock. I'm not sure how long it will take to "find" it.
I think it's the external card, but it wouldn't hurt to try the internal one as well.
Edit: Found it- seems like it's the external card and you insert it while the TF is on.
1. Check the Build number by tapping Apps > Settings > About tablet.
2. On the other desktop PC or laptop PC, visit the ASUS Support Site at http:// support.asus.com and go to the TF101 download page by entering TF101 in the Search By field.
3. Download the firmware file that corresponds to the Build number you see at step 1.
4. Prepare a MicroSD card. Unzip the ASUS folder in the compressed firmware file to the root directory of the MicroSD card.
5. With your Eee Pad turned ON, insert the MicroSD card into the MicroSD card slot.
6. An exclamation mark appears in the notification area. Tap the mark.
7. A System Update File Detected message appears. Tap the exclamation mark to start firmware update

I think that SOP method only works with the packaged updates from the website, not the OTA.
To get back to stock 8239, I used nvflash to wipe, reformat, and load the 8239 firmware. It wipes everything, but you can back up your data with CWM and re-flash it afterwards. The sdcard will get wiped too, you'll have to back that up too.

I can't seem to find the 8239 firmware that works with nvflash.
The 8411 update from the website is a blob that should overwrite everything, unlike the OTA which just patches.
I think the 8656 OTA is pretty picky about flashing.
There is a 8239 download on the website- if you unzip it, there is a blob file. If you unblob it, you'll get the parts that you can flash with nvflash.
If you are going to flash, you might as well try the 84411 file first. It seems like it will work and it will save you a few hours of flashing.
How comfortable do you feel with nvflash?

Problem with my X5 u8800-51 -> reboot looping

Hi people, I have a problem with my phone, I tried to flash it with MIUI 1.12.16 and it seems that something doesn't works because my X5 is rebooting all the time. I follow this tutorial in spanish (http://www.mobilecloseup.com/foro/showthread.php?t=949447) but I will translate it here:
1. First of all download this *.rar http://www.wupload.com/file/2650874587/U8800-51_a_Gingerbread-MIUI.rar which contains 5 folders: dload, MIUI 1.12.16 Multi lenguaje (multilanguage), Recovery Alternativo (CWM 5.0.2.7) [or alternative Recovery], Recovery Original (2.2) and Root para Gingerbread.
2. Format SD card and backup everything.
3. Copy to SD card the "dload" folder and the MIUI zip file which is into the "MIUI 1.12.16 Multi lenguaje" folder of *.rar.
4. Turn off the phone, then push at the same time the two buttons of volume and the on/off button to enter to bootloader mode (pink screen).
5. Inside the new disk unit opened in Windows, copy recovery.img file which is into "Recovery Original (2.2)" of the *.rar into the image folder, just in case if you change original recovery in replace of the clockworkmod one.
6. Extract safely disk unit, take off battery, put again into phone and turn on.
7. Then go to settings, SD & Storage and choose SD update, then accept everything and phone will flash the update to Gingerbread, will reboot during some time and after 5-10 minutos will reboot for the last time.
8. Now you have your phone with Gingerbread 2.3.5 stock, but the aim is to flash MIUI, so the next step is to go to Settings, then Applications and disable quick boot option.
(everything OK until this step... problems started since this point)
9. Erase dload folder from SD card and turn off the phone.
10. Push two volume buttons + on/off button at the same time again to enter to bootlander, then open image folder into the new disk unit and copy to a safe place the boot.img file to backup it, then copy the boot-room.img file which is into the "Root para Gingerbread" folder of *.rar to the image folder and rename it to boot.img, then extract device, take off battery, put again into phone and turn on as usual.
11. You will realize that your phone will be rooted. Now turn off again and do the same procedure but copying into image folder the boot.img file that you backed, also backup the recovery.img file which is into image folder and replace it with recovery.img file which is into "Recovery alternativo" folder of *.rar.
12. Reboot your phone and then turn it off, then push at the same time volume on button + on/off button to access recovery.
13. Just optional: You can backup ROM Stock in Backup option.
14. Choose Wipe Data & Factory Settings, then Mounts & Storage and select format /system.
15. Choose flash zip from sdcard and select from SD Card MIUI *.zip folder that you copied at the very first step.
16. Tap yes and MIUI will be flashed.
I attached some screenshots of what I have in my image folder from bootlander. This is the problem. As I said, my phone is rebooting all the time since I turned on and there is nothing that I can do I finished at the 16th step, please I need your help. If you need more info please ask here, I don't know if I can show you more details because I cannot turn on my phone.
Thanks in advance.

Root myTouch 3G Slide 2.2.1 RUU/OTA - NO PC required - 2013 - New Method

Earlier I posted about how to un-root the 3G Slide and go back to the latest 2.2.1 RUU from HTC. Big mistake -- who knew it would be so flipping hard to go back to rooted? My problem was, the WiFi in CM7.2 stable for this phone was terrible! But being confined to an un-rooted stock phone was worse. After doing the below, I flashed the latest radio, and put the latest nightly on the phone for CM7.2 and it's a little better, but still loses connection fairly often FYI - if anyone has any working solutions to the WiFi issues with this phone I'm all ears. But that aside, here's why I'm writing this post.
After spending nearly 4 days trying every root method I could find for the myTouch 3G Slide with the latest 2.2.1 stock ROM - I almost gave up when I decided to try something different. Luckily for me, it worked -- and best part is, I didn't have to touch a PC to do it! So I thought I'd share and hopefully save someone else some headache. Chances are, you've tried some other methods before finding this post too, so you should do a factory reset on your phone (Settings -> Storage -> Factory Reset) to get back to square 1. Also, delete any files you've used as well, and be sure to download the files using the links I've provided below, as they are known to work (for me at least).
What you'll need:
1) I know I said no PC required, but creating the goldcard hardly counts -- after this step, it's phone-only -- Goldcard - wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Howto:_Goldcard -- I found that the psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard site was down quite often, so an alternate is here: huygens.hoxnet.com/goldcard.html - also, this tool helps: www.modaco.com/topic/308798-pc-application-goldcardtool/
I have to say, I had already created a goldcard for many of the other methods I had tried, so I'm not 100% certain it is required, but it only takes a minute to create, so do it anyways.
2) Download www.4shared.com/file/sz0VO2TL/SlideEng-package.html from this link and use an app on your phone like AndroZip Free to extract the zip on your sdcard. I extracted mine to the /sdcard/downloads/ directory. Which is the directory I'll use in the shell commands below.
3) Download the GingerBreak 1.20 apk, and install the app on your phone. Note, because this app isn't in the market you'll have to enable "Unknown Sources" in your settings to be able to install it. droidmodderx.com/gingerbreak-apk-root-your-gingerbread-device/ - Note that USB debugging must be enabled in your phone settings for GingerBreak to work.
4) Download www.4shared.com/file/OsmF_ZD7/ESPRIMG.html and place the ESPRIMG.zip file in the root of your sdcard (/sdcard/ESPRIMG.zip)
5) Download CWM recovery download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-espresso.zip and rename it to update.zip - place it also in the root of your sdcard (/sdcard/update.zip)
That's all you need, now let's get started:
1) Open the GingerBreak app and press the "root" button.
2) Wait a few minutes for it to run, if successful the phone will reboot. Once it has rebooted ensure that it was able to install the Superuser app.
3) Install any RAM booster app. I used the quick boost button in: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.memorybooster.lite
4) Install Terminal Emulator app from the Market.
5) Open your RAM booster app and click on "boost" RAM. You'll need ~ 70% free RAM for the next step to work.
6) Open the Terminal Emulator app.
7) Type the following commands into the terminal (don't type the $ or #'s below):
$ su
# cp /sdcard/downloads/flash_image /data/local/
# cp /sdcard/downloads/mtd0.img /data/local/
# cd /data/local/
# chmod 04755 *
# ./flash_image misc mtd0.img
8) If you get a memory error when executing that last command it's because your ram booster didn't free up enough memory. Try again, sorry.
9) Now power off your phone.
10) Hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons to power on the phone into hboot.
11) Wait while it searches for and verifies your ESPRIMG.zip file on the sdcard.
12) Once it's verified, press VOLUME UP on the phone to say "Yes" to the installation.
13) When it's done installing the ESPRIMG.zip file DO NOT restart the phone! Press VOLUME DOWN to say "No".
14) Use volume buttons to highlight "recovery" from the menu, and press Power to select it.
15) If you see a red triangle with an exclamation point in it press VOLUME UP + POWER to get past it into recovery.
16) Once in recovery, choose apply update.zip from sdcard.
17) update.zip will run, and afterwards you should be in Clockworkmod recovery. From there you can wipe the data, and install any custom ROM you want.
Hope this helps someone

This thread assumes you want to root the phone in order to flash something like Cyanogenmod. If you simply want to update to the latest stock firmware, this may work -- http://www.htcdev.com/ruu/ (Look for the Espresso exe).
