Replace N1 speaker with Desire's one? - Nexus One General

If you noticed the photos of the N1 and Desire speakers...they are located at exactly the same place, they have the same sizes and forms and they are both attached by the same joint. Still people who tried both devices said the Desire is much louder so I wonder if we could just replace the N1 speaker with the Desire's one???
(Yeah of course adios warranty)

Have you tried the audio-boost software hack? I'd imagine that is infact the only difference.

HD2 speaker quality

What do you think of the HD2 REAR speaker quality?
Could you state below why you think it is good or bad?
Do you have something to compare it to?
Is it better or worse than a Nokia? (I consider their speakers as rather good)
Not too hard to guess what the 1st person put, is it

That poll is called "Earpiece and voicecall quality". Hang on, you made it - you should know that! lol
This is for the speaker.

Yes...
And my poll mainly concerns the REAR speaker.
The front speaker, is IMHO rather good.

Yes I did.
But my rear speaker...
Some ppl here are even saying good or brilliant. I figure HTC is using very cheap components and the spread between those must be huge.
I had luck on mine in terms of the earpiece, but I had no luck on the rear speaker.
It is a shame that a 100 Euro Nokia has a better speaker than my HD 2.
Guess I have to return it :-(
very bad rear speaker or audioprocessing algorithm. rear speaker sounds distorted all the time, no good for a handsfree phonecall or listening music. guess too much volume is pumped to the speaker. not gonna return device anyway. bluetooth headset or headphones.
Coming from iPhone it is very poor for music. Not that the iPhone is high fidelity in any way, but it's much richer. The HD2 speaker is tinny, but it works well for hands free voice, where I thought the iPhone was a bit a sharp and piercing.

I compare it with TP2 and there is no match. The sound from the HD2 is very distorted when the volume put to high. Still the TP2 is the best sound quality from HTC so far.

The N95 is ridiculously better than ANY HTC device ever made, but that's got nothing to do with this poll, so let's not get into that. Likewise with your TP2 comment. The poll is what you think about the HD2 speaker. It's not asking for comparisons.
ok...given that the rear speaker is tiny , am not expecting much but what i dislike is that the sound is garbled and not clear!
I use the speakerphone a lot for con calls...and compared to my n958gb...the sound is less loud (which is okay) but not clear at all....garbled...where I cannot distinguish properly what is being said
I think my rear speaker is ok, but I do get a lot of distortion at high volume through the 3.5mm out which is annoying.
i find my hd2 speakers to be very well made. not earpiercing at all and sound quality is on par and even better than sony's walkman phones and nokia's express music models
I'm pretty sure that aside from the Touch pro 2 HTC use loudspeaker components meant for musical birthday cards. The sound on the HD2 and all the other HTC devices I've owned (including the G1, Magic and Hero) has been appaling compared to all the non-HTC devices I've owned such as the Nokia 5800, iPhone 3gS, Samsung Galaxy, Omnia 2 and Motorola Dext.
It's such a shame that HTC let themselves down like this with their speaker and camera hardware as the BUILD quality of their devices is as good as it gets in my opinion, I just wish they'd stop using crappy parts.
I'm certain the Desire I have on order will also have a crap loudspeaker too.
Just played the same trailer on the HD2 and iPhone YouTube apps and the difference in sound richness - no matter what volume - is deflating.
The "loud"speaker on the rear of the unit isn't really that loud and becomes very tinny when set to a high volume. Bass is non-existent (not surprisingly).
Works OK for a small conference in quiet surroundings but is not suited for a larger group, noisy surrondings and certainly not music!
This is one of the very few areas where TP2 is miles ahead of it's cooler brother - HD2. The conferencing-ability of the TP2, including the rear speaker, is in my opinion brilliant!
....also I don't mean to be a negative nancy but those who have voted the HD2 rear speaker to be 'brilliant' must either have aural deficiencies, have never heard the speakers on a non HTC device or refuse to accept any negative criticism of their beloved device.
There is no smartphone I have come across in the past 18 months that had worse speakers than a HTC-made handset. Most of my friends have some form of HTC device and without prompting all of them have at some point mentioned the poor speaker quality. HTC's speakers have no dynamics to them, so any talking with background noise turns into an incomprehensible mess. On an iPhone or Nokia XPressMusic I can happily listen to my favourite podcasts and music through the loudspeaker but with an HTC device my timpanic membrane is left shuddering as if I had been trapped in a metal dustbin and struck repeatedly with an iron hammer.
So if I can I use a speaker dock.
crap
This is my third HTC made device - PDA2K, TYTN II and now HD2. I must say i am not an audiophile. TYTN II was not too bad, but HD2 is pretty bad. Bought my wife an iphone 3GS (got it cheap as upgrade on phone plan)
my HD2 is embarrasing as a music player compared to the Iphone.
I have had to buy a set of earphones Stenheiser for it, the included ones were crap too. For a NZ$1000 phone, it's unacceptable.
The rear speaker is OK but distorts at volume.

TP2/EVO speaker swap

I replaced the loud speaker on my evo with an oem i ordered online. It was a very easy fix and everything is good now. As I was putting in the new speaker I started to think of how good my TP2 sounded when I used the loud speaker. It just had a nice crisp sound that I havent been able to get out of my Evo. I searched and found a TP2 replacement and from what I can see, it looks just like it! I am about to order one to try it just wanted to get some feedback on this before i waste money. Why is the sound on tp2 better? Thanks.

Wouldn't the case itself make a difference in this? The TP2 had a pretty open back panel to allow sound to pass through. Or at least I remember that being the case. All the holes could have been fake. I gave mine to a family member when I got my Evo so can't check.
Might be a better speaker, but I doubt it will ever sound as good.

It looks like that site has a minimum quantity required for ordering items. Is there a way around that or are you going to order the minimum and resell them?

The sound doesn't look like it travels directly out of the speaker from what I saw when I took my 0003 apart, that plastic gasket makes me thing an attempt to "BOSE" it up...

I'm not sure if the TP2 has 2 speakers or just 2 speaker ports, but sound is definitely emitted from both holes to the left & right of the camera. (see attached photos) I can confirm it sounds much, much better than my Evo, it is louder and reproduces a wider range of frequencies.
It looks like sound quality on the Evo may have been sacrificed for the dual flash. (TP2 always took horrible photos for me.) If the TP2 and Evo share the same single speaker, the improvements are likely attributable to the case. Perhaps some modifications to the speaker / camera housing and the battery cover could yield an improvement.
If the current speaker porting on the Evo restricts airflow excessively it would lower the volume and could cause additional stress on the speaker itself causing them to fail prematurely and / or sound like crap. I am no expert in this specific speaker technology but at a basic level there is a physical mechanism moving which in turn moves the air (aka sound). If the air flow is constricted it will provide increased resistance against the speaker.
From what I remember the TP2 had two speakers. Not for stereo but for different ranges...one was lows and the other was highs. You could cover up each speaker while music was playing and hear the difference as you moved your finger from speaker to speaker.

This is exactly what I gathered after reading some of peoples input including yours. Even if the speakers are the same, I don't think it will make a difference. The back cover and housing are the key I think. Im going to play around with it this weekend see what I can come up with.

[Q] Loudspeaker issue ?

HI !
I just bought a DVP a week ago and though I'm very happy with it, I wonder if there isn't a problem with one of the bottom loudspeakers.
To put it shortly, the right one seems to work perfectly well but if I cover it with my thumb or whatever, I realize that the left one emits at a poor volume in comparison.
I thought this problem could come from the fact that they work as a two-ways speaker, the left one being dedicated to high frequencies, the second one to mediums, but frankly it hardly makes sense IMO.
What about you guys ? Do both your speakers emit the exact same sound and volume or do you have this difference too ?
Thanks.
One is a speaker one is a mic. I think it's the one on the right that is the speaker. Can't turn it on at the moment. Its still pretty loud imo.

Hey, thanks for the quick answer Kenji, but both of them are speakers according to the user's manual... (implying that user's manuals are always right, of course)
Still no clue on the "should I send it back" question...

Don't read too much into the user manual. There's only one loudspeaker, the other grill is for the mic, just like on the iPhone.
I believe one is speaker, the other is mic. At least they were/are in my experience with four venue pros.
Well, what a relief ! That wraps it up.
Thanks for your answers, all of you !

Rear hole next to flash

Do I recently got a gelaskin for my phone and discoveres it came with a tiny cutout next to the flash. Then saw a disassemblt video and noticed that the DHD in the video had a little hole. It looks like a microphone hole for noise cancellation I'm assuming, but I don't have it.
What is this hole, and who else doesn't have it?
Google it to find pics of some DHDs with it.

For your GPS :>
It is indeed a second microphone for noise cancellation but it is only on At&t Inspire 4G and not on our unbranded or other carriers Desire HD.
very fair...
Thanks for the reply, wonder why us normal DHD users don't get it..
Telus (Canada) Desire HD's also have the noise cancellation microphone.

Upgrade DHD screen?

Okay probably a stupid question up for discussion, but what does everyone think about upgrading the screen on the DHD. Say I break mine and found a Sensation that is faulty would it be possible to use its screen since it's also 4.3 inch? I'm assuming it wouldn't work as the GPU probably wouldn't be able to support the higher resolution.
Sent from my Desire HD
sensations screen is no match for our just put sensation next to dhd and you'll see
+ as far as i know there is no other phone on the market that has the same connectors for screen and same "inside" of the phone so no upgrading dhd screen only replacing it trust me on this one you don't wanna mess with that **** take it to service shop and get it repaired
The display may be the same size, but everything apart from that is different on the sensation.
Its not possible, but you could try asking at iFIXIT.com for the connector compatibility.
OK cool makes sense. I've just aways wondered cause everything that is essentially a computer I've seen modified and upgraded... except phones. Wish it could happen one day.
