I have the att nexus one and my phone always says I have new voice mail even though I don't. My phone is currently synced with google voice, but even when I removed google voice and checked my att voice mail there still were no messages. Anyone run into this problem before?
I did. You need to double check that you have no VMs in your old ATT voicemail box. To check this... check the number that an ATT phone dials to look up VMs. If you manually dial that, you can empty your in box.
If this donest work, try to set the vm back to ATT, send yourself a VM and delete it.
Thanks, that ended up working. I had to record a new voice mail on att and then had to delete the new voice mail to make the notification go away.

I've set up Google Voice so that it forwards texts to my Gmail account (which I receive via my phone's email client). While using the Google Voice app on my phone (build 0.4.0.12), I am receiving two replies for each text I send ... one into the Google Voice app's Text section and one into my Gmail account. I'm ok with this as long as they are both free. However, I suspect that's not the case. I don't really know if I'm being charged because I just started messing with this today (July 22), so my bill doesn't show anything yet.
Question is, what are the appropriate methods for sending (both initiating new texts and replying to them) and receiving texts so that they are free in both directions?
If you are using google voice sending and receiving text are free. You can go into the settings for google voice and disable emailing of text messages to your email. Try it from the computer, its a little more user friendly that way as long as you open gv to send and receive messages your fine. Also log into your at&t account just to make sure...

However, I immediately noticed a glaring problem I hadn't thought of. I have Google Voice installed on my Hero. When I get a text message, I get an alert from the Google Voice app. The text message doesn't even show up in my sms apps.
So, I went over to Google Voice settings on my PC. Under my listed device I clicked on Edit, then checked the box, "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)." Now when I get a text message, I get two notifications: one from Google Voice, and one from GO SMS Pro. I guess that is to be expected.
Looking at the Google Voice settings on my Hero, there is only one check box for "Inbox notifications," where Inbox includes both voicemail and text messages! If I uncheck it, I won't get notified when I get a voicemail
Is there ANY way to make it so Google Voice on my phone only notifies me for voicemails and not text messages?
Edit: I found a workaround, albeit rather ingelegant:
In my phone's Google Voice settings I disabled "Inbox notifications"

The official Google Voice forums have sporadic posting about same issue and no real answer besides this work around. Most threads end with people posting "feed back" to Google that they need to update the app for better notification options.
Also I find the work around annoying as hell because randomly it takes an hour for the sms message of a new voice mail to be sent it seems. Hoping Google will address this soon :-/
I only saw the delay early on. Messages are currently showing up in a timely manner, around the same time that a Sprint-only message would appear.
Is there a way that we can stop the text messages from going through Google voice all together? I really don't understand why it needs to do that anyway, just seems like another place I have to go to clean up the clutter, thanks for the work around it saved me from shooting my phone.

I certainly wish there was a way, however you have to realize that when you port your phone number to Google it is like all calls and texts to go Google first, then through the Sprint network to your phone.
But I agree, Google Voice for Android really needs the option to selectively sync/notify only for certain labels, i.e., Voicemails OR SMS OR both! Or, have an option to exclude text messages from the Inbox.

So, if you have/had google voice number earlier and then you port your sprint number... does it mean you have two numbers now?

Not exactly. What happens is my Sprint number replaced my old GV number, and the old GV number will expire in 90 days. I don't think both numbers work simultaneously. If I choose to unport my Sprint number, it will go back to my old GV number.

I just see it as a way to preserve my established phone number and be able to keep it for the long-term in case I should ever leave Sprint or need a new phone number. That's what I'm hoping for, anyway.
Cooler, your problem is you have the google voice app installed on your phone. Get rid of it and setup the text forwarding. Your voicemail is already attached to the phone, and now texts are sent and received once. Why are you still using the Google Voice app if your phone has been appropriated by the Google/Sprint integration? The voice app doesn't serve you any purpose at this point except making things complicated and duplicating your notifications.

If you use option 2 when integrating, you will be able to keep both your sprint and you GV number. BOTH will work, but the GV number becomes the primary.
But if you remove the google voice app, then how do you check your voicemail? You would be notified via sms that there is a new message, but the actual voicemail is stored in google voice, not the sprint voicemail system.

Actually, I prefer having the visual voicemail. Otherwise, I wouldn't have signed up for google voice to begin with.
I think Cooler's workaround makes a little more sense.

But seriously, I think I will just keep using Google voice as just a voicemail service.
I was considering porting my Sprint number to Google voice because I wanted outgoing calls from Google chat to show my Sprint number on the caller id. But doing so would mean I couldn't have two distinct notifications on my phone for Voicemail and txt msgs (Cooler's workaround turns the Voicemail notification into a txt). This probably wouldn't be a dealbreaker for most, but I turned off txt notification mainly because of twitter. But I still want a voicemail notification. I've also heard that you can't receive/send MMS via Google Voice.
So, for now I guess I'll stay put. Thanks to everyone for your input. I'm glad I read this thread before making the plunge.

hal1974 hit it on the nail. I didn't install Google Voice so I can text with it, I installed it so I can get my visual voicemail.

Google voice has already replaced your voicemail, you don't need the app if you are integrated with sprint. I suppose if its just for the visual voicemail, then such is life, we shall have to wait for an app for that alone.

Go to the Google Voice website and turn off Call Screening.
My SMS will not receive messages at all. I use in conjunction with google voice, and then I receive them fine, but if I elect to receive via messaging app, I can send SMS's all the time, but nothing will show as received in the SMS app - they will still appear in my google voice though when I check voice online. I am on latest stock version of rom and still nothing works to receive SMS via messaging app. Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to fix it? I tried other SMS apps from the market but they do not receive messages either.
I have tried the short codes to turn Google voice on (*71) but the short code to turn Voice off (*73) doesn't work - just get a prompt stating this short code is not valid. Any help?

*28areacodephonenumber is the Sprint code for conditional call forwarding. *38 is the Sprint code to disconnect conditional call forwarding from Google voice. There is a setting in Google voice to have Google voice texts go to Google voice app or stock texting app. You must sign out of Google voice if you want your phone to go back to normal and/or dial *38 to disengage Google voice for voicemail. If you don't, you won't get your messages and voicemail normally. It's this what you're asking?
I go into Google Voice app and select the option to only receive SMS via the stock messaging app. It saves the option, but then I do not receive any SMS on the stock app - but if I log into my google voice account the messages do arrive there. I've deactivated Google Voice completely, I've uninstalled the app, I've done everything - still can't receive messages on my stock app. I'd read before that there's a short code (*71 and *73) to manually turn on/off Voice, but only the *71 talk works, *73 is disconnected. Need some help!
Those codes don't work for Google voice. The codes you're interested in are *28yourareacodeandphonenumber to activate conditional call forwarding our *38 to deactivate. As far as I know, no other codes, even land line call forwarding codes, work. Have you tried updating your prl and profile? Try sending yourself a text from the stock app to your Sprint number. If you're not receiving it then perhaps you need to call customer service to get the issue straightened out. I suggest the updating first then reboot and see what happens. I set my phone up so that my Sprint number isn't integrated into Google voice. I want to see which number someone is coming in from. I don't know anything about integration, so u couldn't help you there. There might be a setting in the stock app that it's turned off by mistake that is keeping the stock app from working as it should be.
Edit: Maybe customer service needs to reprovision your account. It's basically resetting the account settings to their proper place in case something got fudged up.

I have AT&T and the visual voice mail app. I did not have the auto save function enabled and the voice mail I am trying to retrieve is about 3 weeks ago, I listened to it several times but never saved it. I can't find any local files on the phone or my micro sd card and when I call my voice mail the oldest voice mails are 2 weeks old and that is exactly what the visual voice mail app shows. I called AT&T to see if they are stored on a server and could be recovered but my answer was that they have no access and thought they might be stored on my sim card. I highly doubt the sim card theory but who knows. I have titanium backup installed but it is set to keep 1 backup and when I restored visual voicemail app to that backup with the data it acted like the date had been set back and seemed to get data through the network and quickly updated the voice mails to the same prior voicemails. This fact is leading me to believe that they are stored on a server somewhere. I know how to recover deleted files (in most cases) but I need the location where they might be stored.
Any help on what to try would be great. My mother just passed away and she left me a message before going in for surgery that ultimately took her life and now that voice mail is gone!!! I just wish I saved it.

1st condolences about your mom.
2nd ATT just like 99% of carriers do indeed store this info unless it is manually deleted. I would try contacting them again and speaking to a supervisor. I am on MetroPCS with my ATT s4... and had a similar issue... I ended up having to get a court order for metro to release them. Call records and texts they had no problems with... but vms they did..

My condolences also on your Mother Panda. I believe kev is correct in probably needing a court order or knowing someone who knows someonr in ATT.
Another option may be if you have a backup/nandroid from that time period, they may still be on phone--not sure

Sorry, you won't find voicemail data stored anywhere on your phone's sim or any of the storages. It is only stored on the carriers server. I have also had to get a court order to retrieve an old voicemail I needed for legal matters. I know the court order was already mentioned. I just wanted to help narrow your search by telling you.
