Ok guys this is what I want in a ROM.
Android 2.1
5MP Camera
WIFI Working
GPS Working
Live Wallpapers
Any suggestions on what ROM offers what I want?
I'm looking for something similar, but I'm not sure it exists at a reasonable enough speed yet.

Speed aint an issue atm. What ROM you got?
For I all those features I'd suggest;
VillainRom5 or VillainRom4
(the gps is a bit buggy though and you'll have to turn off sense.)
If you can give up the live wallpapers then I'd suggest HeroDroid;
It is by far the most stable and quickest rom I've used so far.
You should probably get a rom without sense as the live wallpapers and sense interfear with each othe but I haven't used any without sense so I can't suggest any.
Sorry I can't link to the Roms threads but I keep getting an error, you'll have to search for them.

I went back to the vanilla 1.5 rom the other day - I can't remember what ROM it was I was using, but I stopped using it because I couldn't use Wikitude/Layar/Streetview/etc without them force closing. I think it might have been beHero or something.
I'll give VillainRom4/5 and HeroDroid a try though. Thanks Rptynan and johnny

No Problem, But I will say right now the VillainRoms are in beta so HeroDroid is far more stable. You should try them though they're fun to play around with.
Btw, I think beHero has stopped developement.
The VillainRom might be in beta but it's pretty much perfect for me from what I can see. Thanks again dude
thanks Ive tried eclair rom but live wallpapers dont work it keeps changing back to normal wallpaper ill try he villian rom thanks for the tip. The behero rom kept rebooting on me so ill give that a miss but the herodroid ill try that to.

I Haven't properly tried the facebook app yet, all I've done so far is logged in on it but it seems perfect. Ask on the HeroDroid thread if you want (link in my sig) but it seems perfect on mine.
Edit: The widget for facebook is working on mine, just checked.
NeOROM
Try out my latest ROM in my sig, I have included the necessary libs for LiveWallpapers in the latest version, so it's easy enough to get LiveWallpapers going.
Everything works pretty well, and it's nice and clean.

Hi Ya'll,
Just a quick random question: how is a tattoo build? are they stable enough for everyday use? or is it like a Hero build? lemme know. right now i'm about try out Zen's tattoo 1.67.1100.7 build.
Thanks.

Mostly use Zen's 1.6 Droid-Ion, but trying Tattoo.
Hey come check out all the great news at techbrawl
well, i tried out zen's tattoo 1.67.1100.7 build. and its actually really stable, but the only prob i have is that i can't sync with google, and there is no market place, and data is iffy. but never-the-less a stable build.
now im hoping i could somehow find a way to sync my contacts?
edit:
i found a great way to sync things with hero/magic/tattoo builds. HTC sync.
Here
gah, no linux support
the tattoo builds are quite nice looking , i get alot of force close exceptions with Tattoo--1.67.1100.7--system and DarkTattoo--system.sqsh

yeah they are a lot more smoother than hero builds (as far as i think), but a lot less functional.
i wish someone would work on a stable, functional release, *cough* zen *cough* .... unless i'm slow and can't find one out there.
but for now i'll live with Tattoo 1.67.1100.7. even though i dont have any contacts or marketplace .. but hey i can live with it
I tried using a the tattoo build but it kept force closing on me every couple of seconds, but honestly Zens donut is smooth as butter so i dont feel like trying anything else
idk what build im using now, but i found a hero build over at android on htc under the kaiser builds, and its wicked smooth, like ion smooth.
here's the link.
thanks ill give it a whirl and report back

Noob question. Is it safe/possible to use kaiser build on vogue ? I tried one and it was stuck on the HTC screen during initial boot.

you should be able to boot some. most are just my builds modified for kaiser wifi.
I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.
Thanks,

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?
Thanks.

Yes, check the cm6 thread.
Thanks guys.
I got CM6 on there now, and it is much faster.
I've seen some posts about putting different kernal's on there..What do you guys think about that? Is there any cool features that I can do now with CM6? Tethering?
Thanks.

you could of kept a sense rom and installed a custom overclocked kernel too. im getting decent speeds now myself with 2.1. cm6 is still a bit buggy to me.

Don't have any lag issues with CM6. Been running for 3 weeks no lag. ???

The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

How do you get the market to automatically download your apps? Is it another app or backup? It won't even save all of the apps I had downloaded last time. It only seems to save around 8.
Ok... there are a nice hand full of "sense-less" sense roms out right now, Athena being my favorite of these. But once upon a time, before Incdoes blew up into a monster dev (then crashed and burned) he did the complete opposite. He had his "Best of both worlds" AOSP rom with sense stuff in it (rom thread here) This was my favorite rom at that time.... I like AOSP but also like a lot of the sense... i know i'm not the only one who feels the same, so can this be done now with GB? Hope someone with the skills tries this cuz i think people would like this also......
I still have his v2.0 and v2.1 if someone wants to take a look at them and try for them selves.....

I agree. I LOVED that rom. Sense widget support with a stock launcher (and feel) for me would be ideal. Great idea trying to bring something of this caliber back!

bump cuz i want this!!!!!!!
It seems like the think in that rom that worked were just apks werent they?
Most HTC apks should be installable still. Im not sure if that rom used actually sense widgets or not.
I think there are framework issues. Especially since HTC has not released their gingerbread update yet. Even then, I'm sure its proprietary.
Khanam also posted 2.3 in the original thread. This may help whoever wants to take this over.

If you are looking for the most stable and fast rom, try tytung Gingerbread v2.9. Many will tell you that it is simply the best andriod rom out there.

This is kinda like asking what do you prefer crunchy or creamy peanut butter...your bound to get many different responces. lol.
Check out this site. It lists almost all the nand android ROMs found here on XDA in a place thats much easier to find it.
AmeriCanAndroid is a great ROM and its updated often so thats always a good starting point. if your one that prefers HTC sense then maybe try out RAFDROID HD. i've personally found this ROM very fast and stable. If you like more of a iphone type feel then try a miui ROM out. i would suggest LADY MIUI or D4RK MIUI.
There really is no one best ROM, i think anyway. This is because everyone has their phone set up slightly different and also want different things on their cell. just try out a few ROMs intill you find something you want to stick with for a little bit of time and see how it goes. It took me several months to settle on a ROM because i always wanted to flash every new ROM that came out. lol.
I tried Miui, Sense and cynogen based roms; Miui has the best home applications like the camera app, phone app, etc. The fastest (real difference), with lots of tweaks and the best baterry for me is Dorimanx High end rom, although some of his builds are not stable because he is always updating his rom. Im using dorimanx rom right now, although im waiting to see if Hyperdroid is updated wich is another excellent rom.
Hello,
I tried BoyPPC ROMs and it's quite fast, stable and regularly updated so it seems well followed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199917
But I agree with previous comments that it depends on your configuration and your needs. each one has pros and cons and you should just test the one that best fits to your needs.
Since Feb I'm using AmeriCanAndroid (well, cope's sd rom at that time, before he and warrenb started together AmeriCanAndroid). Haven't changed to anything else since then. Have switched to the nand version since 2-3 weeks and I'm happy with it.
Pyramid
I tested many Roms.
Because I like that HTC stuff, I searched a long time for a stable Sense 3 ROM.
This ROM is amazing and works verry well and smooth:
