Does anyone know how to make Video Call over cellular network on the Desire. I do not see a second camera for dual screen video call.
Next, does anyone know how to install Garmin Modile XT on the Desire?
I would appreciate all leads and pointers. Thank you.

The Desire does not have a front camera. Android doesn't support front camera's; not for the moment anyway.
How is this related to Desire Android Development?

Is there any software or files that we port to make use of the front camera instead?

Yes! Sell the Desire and buy a Windows Mobile phone or a Blackberry, because Garmin don't have an Android version!
Regards,
Dave
Damn, some people are offensive in here.
It is not possible to do 2way video call but i think it will be possible to receive video call. Same thing was with my SE M600, did not have front camera, or back for that matter, but had the ability to receive video call over 3g.
Regarding Garmin, no not yet. You should contact Garmin on that as they are producers, but they do not do Android yet, but may in the future.
Edit: The only Android phone so far is Evo 4g which is gonna hit the states this summer, has the front camera and will be capable of video calling both ways. For the rest of the world it will take some time.

Id hardly call any of the posts offensive. The fact is that post has NOTHING to do with development, and to make things even worse the OP clearly ignored responses from others about the device not even having a second camera.
If anything the thread needs to be moved/deleted and people need to stop trying to answer the OP's questions as the OP is just ignoring people.

Sorry for the confusion. I mean using the main camera so that the other caller can see me during video call, if that is possible. Is there any software development for such thing over here?
Take it easy guys. Don't be too hard on me. I'm a noob with Android, shifting from WinMo.
I dont see why you need Garmin XT as there are other alternatives for Android.
1. Use google maps (require a data plan)
2. CoPilot and a few others for offline navigation option.
for option 2, you need to buy the correct map version and you're set.

Because for some countries is Garmin best navigation which is possible to get...
Example for Slovenia iGo, TomTom, Sygic... have terible maps. In our town our street which is old more than 30 years do not have house nr coverage...
Google maps is not navigation.

I remember hearing that the video camera on the Universal might not be useable for Internet conferencing. Does anyone know if this is correct? Sorry if this is a silly question, but what exactly CAN it be used for?
the whole bell and whistles of 3G or UTMS if you want
was that you could do video phoning
so that would be the purpos of the cam i guess
it's also mentioned in the o2 sales pdf which i thing
was removed because o2 (or was it tmobile) got upset
because their internal doc's ended up here
er.. Universal does NOT have 3G. sorry.

ohhh yes, it got 3G (UMTS)
It's the first PPC announced with 3G ever
thats what makes it tasty
no more SLOOOOOOOOW gprs
data speeds
So what about internet conferencing? Will that be possible? I assume that would require some MSN-like software, or would there be a way to send video via the internet?
if the applications were made and the camera supported it's really very early to say anything for surden
all we have right now is
you hearing that it will not work
try asking you where you heard it
no no no
it will be like this
you sit on yer chair with wifi on
and you voice and video chat through msn messenger on yer xda 4
huh?
and why would it be over wifi and not utms ?
i mean apart from the fact that wifi would be cheaper
but not as available as utms

I hope no one asks me where I heard it... too much information, brain too small
Dale Coffing says some things about the video conferencing at http://dalecoffing.typepad.com/my_weblog/2005/06/first_impressio.html
Why does he say that he needed a SIM card to check the video conferencing?
If it can't do both it's kind of like saying that you can only store images on device, not on SD.
I could never in my wildest dreams belive that they would implement this and then not make it avalible for the Wifi connection, or any current connection at all other than 3G.
Yes it is 3G, and yes it supports video calls.

So you have one there right now?
Whats the FCC ID printed on the label of your device??
I guess what I am trying to ask is whether I can use the Universal to send video via the Internet to a computer using a program like MSN Messenger or Netmeeting? Is there software included that does this, or is it just a matter of waiting and hoping that someone will make a program that does it?
Alternatively, would it be possible to post the video to a website?
I understand that it may be too early to tell, maybe TechGuru can let us know?
Thanks.
May I ask why you want the FCC ID?
I can't really say more than I have already guys, under very tight NDA with O2.
Just keep your eyes peeled on Tekguru!

To check the FCC website for any info.
Can't find anything there on the Universal, so either it's more confidential than other HTC devices,
It's under a different FCC granteecode which could be that HTC is spreading risk/sales into different sub companies or they have used a sub contracter to build the Universal,
The data wont be avaliable before launch date (which it is for other devices??)
Video Conferencign
It wont have video conferencing. It will be able to do Video Messaging. There is a big difference. Video messageing you record a 10-15sec clip and send it. The person recieves this video clip, downloads it, and then plays it. Its not actually LIVE streaming though.
thats mms
the other 3g utms phones i've seen offer video phoning
not that good quality and the sound is not 100% synced but
they do offer it
dont see why the universal should not also offer this

The Universal is not on the FCC site under HTC or any other company. Easy to do as the FCC now allows companies to delay publishing of *any* details provided the device is not on sale before the info appears.

While I don't believe the next gen Mobile Messenger will support video conferencing directly, you can use Microsoft Portrait - http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/ - which does work with Messenger (and the buddy lists). It's also free.
There is a utility in Windows XP called "Dialer". You can configure it to use the modem connected to the computer to make voice calls. It is located in the folder Program Files\Windows NT:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...ddocs/en-us/dialer_whatis_intro.mspx?mfr=true
In the past, I have used dedicated modems over land-lines to place voice calls using Dialer. In theory, wouldn't it be possible to configure this same utility to place a voice call with the wireless modem built-in to the Shift?
Does Vista include this utility? If not, couldn't it be easily copied from an XP machine to the Shift?
Why
the shift will inclue voice dialling out of the box so not much point to your suggestion but thanks all the same
according to some reviews there are NO Voice capabilities in Shift!!!
Some news reports are wrong.. and no one has seen a production device yet Htc only just got the FCC approval for voice on a device that is the exact same form factor of the shift and the people that are making the device have leaked out to people on these forums (a few weeks ago) that it does deffinatly have voice and gps which has now being confimed (the gps was confirmed about two days ago by a MS worker)

thank you. yes voice and gps.
Hmmm. So when the official European HTC website, Shift section lists both the full Users Guide and Quick Start Guide && When neither mention the GPS or voice capabilitiels.
WELL
If they are included then HTC should re-write it's manuals.
i agree
and im sure they will update it now they have the full licence from the FCC to distribute the dev ice with voice capability

yes it has gps 100%,but under vista with what software?
there is not clear until now.
for now use tomtom google maps or whtever in WM6 and once decent gps software is avaiable for vista get that instead!!
FCC approval is only for US market.

Yes but if ur going too release something this good to the world is it not better to have approval in what will be one of the biggest buyers for the product.. it makes sense to me and 100% of computer devices i have have the fcc approval but i live in uk.
The user manual is available to download from HTC now and there's NO mention of voice capabilities whatsoever!
Sucks ass big time - this was my only hope of having a decent PC and phone - looks like the flybook is a better (but much more expensive) option as the new ones have faster HSDPA and voice!
If you read on Mobileplanet, they spec gps for the US Version but not for the european version. Is this true there fore we should wait for the US one?

would u idiots for lack of a more meaningful word stop looking at the user manuals and what is online and look at a better source who says the shift has phone capabilities. i replicated snapvue on my athena. one of the options when u go to settings is phone where u choose ur profile, ring type, bands, etc.. like in settings/phone of say the athena. Even bangelboy, if you check his website, was not sure that cell phone services would be part of the final production model, although he was hopeful that it would be. Yet, all HTC indications in all their documentation is that cell phone services are not included.
Yes, the hardware is there, but there are some problems, perhaps legal patent rights, that are stalling what we want the HTC Shift to perform. It might still be a case for XDA developers to work out.
I would be happy to have the assurance of your sources, as the evidence at this point seems not to be favorable. It is good for you that you have faith in your sources, but without ascertaining their veracity, out of the box, it is hard to believe the Shift is configured for cell phone service. Would you care to share your sources with us?
I've read a few contradicting posts so I want to make clear:
HTC Touch Dual (nike) HAS gps receiver.
It is enabled on my “Bell” ROM (Canada).
I used the Diamond test software and I can see about 10 satellites. (Nadavi_HTC_GPS_TOOL.cab)
I have also installed Google maps and Garmin Mobile XT and both work like a charm.
I don't think there is a register/settings you can change to enable it on your phone. I think you need a new ROM.
On the WIFI side, I strongly believe it has WIFI but we may need a new ROM to enable it.
back this up?
Any screenshots?
Where is this "Bell" rom
When i say screenshots i mean photos so that we know they arent faked and are deffinetly on the Nike
Not saying I Donm't believe you cos i have seen some posts quering this fact.
If your right, fantastic I just saved myself £30 on a GPS reciever
As far as my research goes, A so called "bell" rom is only for the touch, not touch dual...
Bell is a provider in Canada. I'm at work but I'll take some pictures and I'll post them tomorrow.
Ok Fair enough. I don't see how that works but ok. If you have concrete eveidence that fair enough. What made you think to test?
Look at the link and go through specifications:
http://bell.ca/shopping/en_CA_ON.HTC-Touch-Dual/67331.details
You can see it has GPS_NAV. It is an assisted navigation and you have to pat a monthly fee. I wanted to verify if it is a real GPS receiver or if they use a triangulation system.
Like I wrote in your other Thread, the canadian Touch Dual is a Neon400, which have built-in GPS!

Yes i´m using it and i find that it´s better than all they other Nav´s to Android.
Good to hear, im thinking of geting this soon. It look the biz......
Does it store on the sdcard or internal?
Does it have spoken stree names?
It store the app on the intern mem but the cards and so on, on the card. (like they other ones)
Not sure what you mean with spooken streetnames
Some GPS software say....turn left into desire avenue, then turn right into htc way............
Do you know what i mean?
I've been using Navigon since i bought the desire and it's working flawlessly, gonna try this sygic drive
The software is pretty good.
A few Cons:
Low resolution - Blurry look on desire
No way to make it personal - no other colour settings, cars and so on.
Seam to have a hard time syncing contacts - cant navigate to contact in your contact book.
Just wait and see Sygic Aura! It's out now on iPhone with hardware accelerated graphics and it looks incredible. It's coming soon to the Android platform, but I don't know if it will be accelerated on that too.
Sygic 's not compatible on my Desire. The resolution is not compatible (it stays in a corner of the phone). Do you have a workaround for this?

For one thing - the sarcasm is childish. Two, if anyone actually READ the forum RULES, it says - SEARCH BEFORE POSTING..... Its not a difficult concept. Third, all this does is CLUTTER the forum with crap that doesnt need to be here.
Tango works, but it's unreliable and compare to facetime it's crap. Google needs to make facetime for android.
Google needs to add video support to Google Talk.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
and if I want to call to someone don't have a smartphone....like samsung f480 without that software
So there is no videocall option? are they serious? not everybody have qik or other software...just a usual videocall over 3g
I think its a probleme with android and not the phone it self...
I already have the dezire z and nexus S and they have a front camera but can't do a video call to another phones without this softwares
motorola wrote a crapy motoblur and was unable to wrote a normal videocall app???
p.s. moto had a super videocall option on their phones - they can even record video!
I see video calling as one of those things that would be great to do someday but for now its just another come on gimmick. Without every single phone being able to video call (not video chat) and being compatible with all the other phones out there I see no real reason for it other than a gimmicky thing. Having said that, my wife has the iPhone 4 and she has been after me to get it also so we can video call. Like the droids, the iPhone 4 can video call but only with another iPhone 4. It may be that when they come out with the iPhone 5 this summer that it may not be able to video call with the iPhone 4.
Now, since ATT saw fit to shove an update on my Atrix that essentially locked it up even more I am seriously considering going to the iPhone 4 and make my wife happy so she can see my pretty face when she calls me. She calls me once a day to ask how I am and give me a shopping list. I can see her calling me several times a day now just so she can video call, Oh joy! And if I don't accept her request to video call I can see myself in the dog house for a while.
we really need Skype Video or Google Video Chat ASAP.
