I heard it doesnt have a FM receiver is that true if yes is there any way i could still receive radio signals?? I hope there is cause thats the only reason for me not buying it.
That is correct. No FM-radio in HTC Hero. That does not work in the subway anyway so I put my hopes up for a good webradio application.
i hated this about my iphone as well (currently have a hero coming) but it isn't that big of a deal because web radio works where ever you have a data signal; usually FM radio in buildings is ****e most of time due to signal quality.
If you download Beebplayer from the market you can "Listen Live" to BBC Radio 1,2,3 etc and also "Watch Live" BBC1, 2, News etc. Aslong as you're a TV License holder.
Web Radio is so much better than FM, you don't need headphones with you just to be able to play it. This is no biggie to me really, as said previously, reception is ****e.
web radio might have better reception but not all local fm stations are web based plus data signal quality and range may not always be strong. Besides having two options is always better than one.
using web radio will eat up your monthly data allowance more quickly then a fat kid eating a Big Mac

I've got an Ipod Touch and really dislike the "Apple politic", so really need a change and thought HTC hero (with FM) would have made this difference! I don't consider web radio because of the web access and don t need a 3G connexion. FM should be basicly on any multimedia stuff!!!!
FM Receiver on all the HTC's I have used have always been poor reception anyway, so I never used it
hmm, just found saw this: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/nexus-one-teardown-reveals-possible-802-11n-radio-and-fm-transmi
what chipset is mounted on the hero?
radio streaming cannot be compared to fm radio. it consumes way more battery and internet bandwidth..
Nexus one is the top model from HTC today...
Hero is based on qualcomm and like Magic does not have FM receiver, so only way is online radio...

...not completely true
On modern smartphones most FM receivers are integrated in the bluetooth chipset.
The Hero hardware uses BRF6350 chipset form TI, which in fact has a FM receiver subcircuit. FYI: the X1, a.k.a. HTC Kovsky, also uses this chipset and has FM radio function.
See here for more details about the chip:
http://focus.ti.com/pdfs/wtbu/ti_bluelink_6_brf6350.pdf
These chips require some firmware to interact properly with the main CPU.
So without a proper firmware file activating the FM subset, there'll never be FM radio for Hero.
There might be also hardware parts missing to get this ever working....
P.S.: Nexus is also based on Qualcomm.

scholbert

This person in this post here claimed to have my app running OK on a cdma Hero, but then had some problem and disappeared : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18460535&postcount=1462
I don't know if the gsm version is the same.
AFAIK, the only issue is the audio routing. RSSI looked OK on good stations I think.
I'm here due to an email I received, but for further discussion, perhaps my thread is best: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22492334&postcount=2246
New app for Sirius on market place. Can anyone install this and confirm it as being compatible on EVO. It was one of the apps I was worried about losing when I drop the iphone next week for the EVO.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/sirius-xm-android-app-hits-the-market/
Thanks.
Why would it not work?
dont know. just going off of what i read in the article. said something about list of confirmed devices. so....
doesnt hurt to have a confirmation.
I downloaded this app on my EVO 4G. It works fine.
awesome. thanks.
is it xm or sirius?
Both. Same company now.
I just got an email from Sirius yesterday that there Android App is out. I was so excited. It should work on the EVO. I had it on my TP2 and loved it. I can't wait to get my EVO next week.
works on my HTC Touch running Android too.

I verified it. It is running XM. Though they are the same company now and have merged many of their channels, they still have a few subtle differences. Mainly for me, I like to listen to the Opie and Anthony show. It's available on XM, but if you have Sirius, you have to pay more for the best of XM package.
works on my htc hero. wonder how much for a scrip. to just stream to your phone?
I'm pretty sure you have to get a full subscription, and then the add on to be able to stream.
for me, its no big deal. i already got the sub since i have it in my jeep. but i added the stream add on for when i'm in my wifes car, or at work. i know a lot of people like slacker and pandora, and i do to. but for 3 bucks a month, its a good option also.
I have it in my car and online at the beginning was always free with having it in your car than they changed it.. So I've had a subscription for a while. I just got offered a deal when my sub was up if I prepaid for a year.

Sirius would be such a great company/service if they did ANYTHING or added even ONE suggestion to their devices from their customers. It's too bad, such a great idea for music and uncensored talk, but of course run by NYC a-holes...

Engadget is reporting that the update will come starting tomorrow with a 4 day rollout and will fix the 3g upload issues.
Can someone with more seniority post a link?
I'm too new to post the source link. Here's the quote though:
"Good news - an update will be released tomorrow 9/30. It will be rolled out over a 4 day period so not everyone will get it on day 1. I will have the standard MR information (fixes included, rollout schedule, etc) available tomorrow morning and will post it in a new featured thread."
Here is the link: http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/29/sprint-epic-4g-update-coming-tomorrow-should-fix-3g-upload-iss/
I hope i dont have to add crap again to do this. If so i guess ill do it.
This is good and all...but is there any news of a 2.2 update? Coming from a nexus one, this phone seems severely crippled by it's software(or lack thereof).
I look forward to the update, but if it doesn't get better soon, I'm going to return it. I have 3 weeks left to return it...we'll see how the tmo g2 looks when it comes out...
No official word yet on Froyo, but the rumblings I've been hearing are either the end of September (so tomorrow or this update) according to support people in the UK, or the end of October according to support people in Spain. No support people in the US have said anything firm about Froyo.

I don't follow you. How is the Epic crippled just because it doesn't have Froyo? 2.2 is not going to change hardly anything... it's the exact same UI. Most apps dont allow for apps2SD yet, and Flash is underwhelming. The phone's already fast as ****. So, please tell us what you mean by your comment.

the phone lacks flash for one. to advertise the phone as a media powerhouse and i cant go to hulu, one of the largest free movie sites blows chunks. who wants to use the media hub and spend 12.95 per movie or even 3.99 to rent when i can order netflix and watch online. by the way you cant do that with the phone as well. i have 2 weeks left and as it stands i will be taking the phone back. i got the epic for personal use and i have an evo for work. the epic is faster and the screen is better but functionality wise the evo is better and i think it has to do with not being updated like the evo is.
so the evo is more functional just because it has flash? by the way, hulu blocks all mobile platforms, so even when 2.2 comes you won't be able to use it.

I agree, Froyo caused many more problems on my Evo than it fixed. Actually, other than flash (and even that is not all that) it didn't improve anything and it broke Pandora and others with LOUSY sound, it removed root and it removed RTSP. Since then, many of these things are possible to work around, but the bottom line is that in my opinion, Froyo is over hyped.

I really only want it b/c we "think" TW3.0 will be with it... I want the EQ.
Why wouldn't you want the choice to have the latest OS?
JIT compiler and flash is enough for me to want it. If you don't want it just don't upgrade?

Capabilities of this type of device
Got mine its decent. Does anyone know if there will be very much development for this device.
I know they said they would put out some OTA updates and root was a possibility in the future.
This is my first device of this nature and I am clueless to any possibilities it may have. I know I like
to root any device I can and I'm hoping to do the same with this.
I'm just hoping their OTA updates fix the crashing, hell when some apps crash and it asks if you want to report it, the report crashes as well!
I ordered two of these. It is junk. Move along. Laggy and one of my units is broken. Company doesnt care. It is just a rebranded CX-01...

It looks to me like they do care quite a bit. They are answering all kinds of questions on the Kickstarter backer's page and on Facebook. I believe that they are working hard on an OTA update to be released very soon....At least I hope it's soon.

Got Root
I got this device rooted awhile back and downloaded some apps to help with
performance. It runs alot better now. I can't beleive they couldn't fix some of these
issues before it came out. I installed the beta updates they put out and it helped.
It seems like they don't want to give out the info needed for people to do developement
because they are afraid someone will get it up and running better then they can.
I'm just looking forward to running custom roms on this thing.
I've owned one of these, and also a bunch of the dual core sticks.
The Equiso is not worth the price. It is pretty much a cx-01 or c-77.
I found the video performance to be substandard.
I sold it for a loss after a week.
You can get a dual core for cheaper.
Even the original MK802(single core allwinner a10) is better.
If I had to buy a stick right now it would be the dual core MX1.
If I wanted to wait I would pick up the GK802 quad core stick(freescale soc!) or the uHost2 dual core stick.(more usb)
Let the buyer beware though! Check out everything you can before you buy!
Wow, that uhost2 looks really good. Would you happen to know of any good reliable retailers that have the Bluetooth capable one???

Please stay on topic - asking just about the phone capability please.
I have spent an hour searching the web and no thread indicates whether it is data only or also voice/phone capable.
I know that we can pull a phone application, but the question is if the modem is phone capable or not.
If you answer please link to your source, or share how you know.
I think for many if this is also a phone (and not just a VOIP sub-par option) it could go head to head with a Note2, with a reduced budget.
Thanks.
Even i am looking for this questions answer but not getting proper answer..Its not confirmed yet abt voice calls/sms
Add one more to the list of people who would like to know the answer to that question. I'd like to upgrade my Galaxy S, which is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I wouldn't mind to loose the back camera (I seldom use it anyway, plus I actually have a digital Point-and-shoot). Also, since I don't make that many calls, a small, cheap tablet makes total sense for me...
My guess is that, if the Nexus 7 with 3G is anything like the original Galaxy Tab (probably one of the original Android Tablets) on that department, then voice is a given. But you never know if the modem is crippled in any way...
Also, since we're on this topic, any news if the launch date is global, or only for the US? And if the 3G will be Europe-friendly, for that matter?
Miguel
I have used Line 2 on mine, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

As far as I know, currently shipping N7s completely lack any kind of 3G-capable hardware. It's simply not installed, period. And, since that hardware it's a tiny chip with even tinier contact points that needs to be soldered at manufacturing time (not to mention the rest of the supporting hardware, including the antenna, and already supposing the PCB actually has the required traces in place, which may or may not be the case), then ANY currently N7s being sold will never be 3G capable by themselves. Unless someone develops some kind of dongle to be added, though I don't even know if that's possible...
So, unless I'm terribly wrong, to get an N7 with 3G, you'll need a new one.
Now, one question that popped into my mind in the meanwhile. There was at least one review that took the N7 apart that found out the PCB for the N7 actually has a mounting area for a back camera, and probably all the PCB traces are in place, too. At the time, the reviewer said it could have been a leftover from the design phase, or something that had to be cut back due to the target cost. With these new SKUs popping up, do you think Google will eventually throw the back camera in at some point?
Miguel
i,ve asked google customer support several days ago on this same question but not yet get an answer. one thing i,m certain is that this all depends on the modem.that is, the modem may be data connection capable only, or may also be capable for making voice calls.

My guess is, unless someone can get their hands on one of them before November 13th, we'll have to wait until at least then to get this question answered.
Also, a bit OT, but does anyone know launch dates for all countries? It would suck so much to have to cross the border just to get my hands on one... Right now, you can only get the 32GB Nexus 7 in Portugal (we completely skipped the 8GB and 16GB versions, they were never even available, though the good news is that we got the 32GB version along with the US), though only through retail (no Play Store for anything other than apps).

Anyway, that reply might be a good thing after all: we all know the phone app is disabled for the N7, it has been said before. However, as someone also already mentioned, it's usually possible for people to enable that app, even if you need a custom ROM for it. So, assuming the whole "does not have a built-in phone app" thing only means "we didn't enable voice capabilities because, frankly, it would cannibalize our other offerings, but the underlying hardware is perfectly capable of doing that" (not that you would actually hear anyone from Google saying that, or have them write that down... lol), we'll be golden.
Is any way you can reply to that e-mail and specifically ask which is the baseband/chipset they will be using for the data capabilities? If we had that tidbit of information, we should be able to know if voice could be unlocked or not...
What a way to start my day, with a hopeful news... Nice!

Still can't find anything besides a "send feedback" link over at Android.com. I think you were extremely lucky

i reply the customer support's email with another question but they didn't give me the direct answer!
my qusetion was:
"thanks for your kindly help. would you tell we if the hardware modem itself supports voice calls? as you know,in android,a 3rd party phone app could take the work of the built-in phone app. so lack of built-in phone app really doesn't matter much. eager for your reply and thanks again!"
their response:
" The N7 3G version can be used for Voice over IP calls, such as Skype, or Google Voice, etc but you will not be able to use the tablet as a phone. Hope that helps."

I think that kind of confirms where the blogsphere is currently on this topic.
No cell for us

How did you manage to do that? I've been all over Google's support pages and have found nothing that even remotely looked like an e-mail address where we could ask for questions. Or a support form, for that matter...

Technically No...
It doesn't answer whether or not the modem(radio) inside the device has been limited (hardware wise) to only a Data connection.
The N7 runs the tablet version of Android, which means the Phone Feature (dialer, etc) has been removed.
The phone dialer you see on some tablets, are custom to that manufacturer, not added by Google.
What we need to know is if the Hardware part of the N7 will allow for a Voice connection to be made. If so, then the Software part can be added back in. Which I'm sure if the hardware needed is there, then the many geniuses here on XDA will quickly make the Dialer appear
And I might be completely mistaken here, but SMS should be possible since its Technically Data, and only requires a Phone Number to route the messages. If SMS is possible, I would be happy with just that, as I do not use voice (if I needed to, I have a cell for that, which I pay an extreme amount for, but only make on average 2 calls a month) - But this would also require the SMS app be added back into the N7 firmware.

I think it all come down to Waiting... Waiting for the device to be release, and someone taking it apart to see what its capable of.
Since Google employees people in their service department that are not completely "Tech" savvy, I don't think we can take any answer they give as fact.
I called them the other day, and asked about the Modem/Radio within the Nexus 7 3G.. and The CSR answer was "No you can not plug a Phone Cord or Ethernet cable into the device, and if you want to listen to the radio you must download a 3rd Party App or Try our Google Music service, but it's not a radio" - Couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably for 10min straight.
