I have 3 Launchers installed. Home++, Launcher+ and default Launcher.
I switch between these but was wondering will having 3 installed effect my phones performance?
Will they all be running or only my default. I checked on Advanced Task Killer but it doesn't show any of the launchers so I have no idea if they are all running or only one.
Anyway I can check or if anyone knows?
I removed the odex and apk for Launcher2, since I'm using Launcher++. Removing the bundles will speed up response time

So your saying that even though your not using it, its still running?
Did you notice any difference? More memory etc?
They don't run all the time but they're still called everytime, you say, hit the home soft-button.
So, theres not much difference in terms of memory/battery/etc, but it cuts a few milliseconds off response time and makes everything smoother
Hi,
is anyone els having lags opening the ICS apprawer?
is there any chance to resolve this "problem"?
ICS realy feals smooth, except starting the appdrawer...
Yup - It's the only lag I experience, nothing I've tried has an effect including forcing 2D acceleration, limiting background processes, changing animation and transition timings and not keeping activities.
For me it's a slight stutter rather than lag, the app draw itself would load much better if the launch animation was turned off. I believe it's related to a bottleneck in the systems memory bus.
Yep! I've experienced lag on the App Drawer with every ROM I've tried for my NS4G. I'm starting to wonder if the NS can handle ICS properly.
Agreed. Its one of those things that really puts me off and i would REALLY want a fix for this
I had really bad lag on my i9023 until I did a factory reset, after that it's a different phone. Know of quite a few others that found the same so may be worth a try (if you haven't already that is)
Not many responses to this thread, but I can honestly say that I do not experience any app drawer lag at all. i9020T 4.0.3 stock/rooted.
i got too... with stock and alternative launcher, really annoying thing.. had a fade to black effect even when i close an app...
and I know is off topic... but why my phone has rotation disbled??? all check are flagged!! why why and why!!!
edit 2: rotation issue solved just rebooting.. how noob!!!
I definitely get the stutter.
I even went as far as giving the launcher process higher priority but it made no difference.
Specifically I tried
renice -15 `pgrep com.android.launcher`

I'm pretty sure it has to do with loading the widgets as they are connected to the apps in the new drawer. Cm9 has an option that disables the connection between the apps and widgets, solves 99% of the problem. Glad this thread was made as I was getting crucified by delusional members over this issue. Blind allegiance ftw I guess

Yes, CM9 launcher fixes the issue for me too as long as you tick to have widgets separated from main apps.

I did try factory reset, and after that ive done some testing, launcher still lag...no change...maybe at the begging i thought its better, but when you run for example browser than exit from it and press menu it lags again...
so i believe for people that have lag in launcher (like me) factory reset is not solution...
we will have to wait for community fix or google fix ...

I have the exact same issue. The closest I have gotten to getting rid of it is what I have now.
Peter Alfonso December 20 nightly with glad os 2.2 with lazy governor. Its almost completely gone.
And I completely wipe everything and restore manually EVERY TIME I install a new ROM .

I also do experience a small lag when I launch it the first time, but that doesn't bother me too much, to be honest. I'm having more of a lag when I want to return to the app drawer from an application, it takes a two or three to close it.
Hey guy's. so i installed Timur's Host USB ROM on my Google Nexus 7 3G tablet. i'm setting it up now and have a very stupid problem on my hands. i know i should be able to fix it, but i can't seem to figure it out.
I installed Gapps for my setup and installed a lot of apps. the apps automatically put a shortcut on my homescreen. the problem is i have apps appearing off the screen of my nexus. seems as though theres an extra row/column thats allowing apps to be placed, but isn't visible on my tablet screen. i've tried adjusting the row/columns to the lowest setting, but to no avail. actually seems like that setting doesn't actually change any settings. whats wrong and going on?

In google play, go to settings and disable auto add shortcut. For the extra rows, i would install a different launcher, like apex or nova.

So what your saying is there's no fix?/I'm not an idiot? I just have to download a new launcher over the 1 I have now?
I've had some experience with apex and know it pretty well. Never tried nova. What would people recommend?
Since I am not running that rom, i have no idea if there is a fix. But, a new launcher would fix it. I never use a stock rom launcher anyways. I always use Nova. I havent tried GO launcher lately, as it was a little laggy after jb. It is probably fixed by now though.
If you post the link to timurs rom, or pm it to me, i will add it to my multiboot and play with the launcher.

just fixed my problem. was playing around with it for a little and figured it out. I didn't have "expand windows to screen size" selected and for some reason it was making them bigger. so yeah. that fixed everything.

Cool deal. I just installed it a few minutes ago. Time for me to build a y-cable! Now if timur would incorporate kexec support into his kernels, it would be perfect. Cant live without multirom, lol. Anyways, glad you got it figured out.

Any idea what would cause ALL of my homescreen widgets to stop updating i.e. freeze for no obvious reason? I'm completely stock & un-rooted, and when this issue first came up I did a factory reset but the problem still comes up out of nowhere. Everything will be working fine and then out of nowhere they all stop updating. Here are the widgets I use:
Fancy Widget
Switch Pro
Android Pro Widgets
BattStatt Pro
I've been using these same widgets for at least three years, and over three different devices, and this has never been a problem, which makes me think it's something weird with KitKat. At this point I'm removing widgets one by one to see if I can narrow it down, but it is so f-ing frustrating because everything will be fine for a day or two and then WHAM all of my homescreen widgets just lock up and the only way to get them to update again is to reboot the device which is a pain in my ass. It's worth mentioning that even after all the widgets freeze the stock 'Weather' widget still works fine...
Help!
Nova launcher much better than touched just use that?

Thanks, I'll give it a try to see if I still have the issue. I used to run LauncherPro back in the day - even paid for the plus version - but then the dev promptly stopped releasing updates, and I felt somewhat ripped off. . . From then on I've stayed with whatever launcher came stock on the device.
How did you manage to put widgets on lock screen?
I had it on my S4 but I couldn't find that settings in the S5.

I posted about the same issue in the Verizon GS5 forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738912. Hopefully one of us will get an answer. My weather widgets were stopping the refresh (BeWeather and Beautiful Widgets), and I use Go Launcher and Apex. And my interval between requiring a launcher restart drops - initially its a couple days, but as time progresses, I need to reset more and more frequently.
Not sure its a KitKat specific issue - my Nexus 7 (2012) running KitKat runs all widgets fine.

So, I'm NOT the only one after all. And you have this issue even on Apex? Not good - I was hoping that would be a solution for me.
In searching around online I found the following info on another forum:
"this issue occurs because kitkat has changed the way it manages background alarms. most widgets that update frequently use "alarmmanager" to trigger each update. but in kitkat, the trigger event is intentionally delayed so that android can group processes together, saving battery life and data use. so, for all those clock and weather widgets, the developers have to write a bunch of new code for kitkat devices, so that their widgets update at the intended time."
After reading this I tested a theory and set my alarm to go off in 2 minutes. The alarm went off, and sure enough all widgets were frozen . . . I figured it must be the 'Timely Alarm Clock' app causing the issue, so I uninstalled and went back to stock alarm. This didn't work however, because two days later everything froze up again . . . I'm wondering now if it might be one of the other apps I'm using in the background, but there are so many possibilities and the issue is so intermittent. I never use 'task killers' or battery monitoring apps, so that isn't it. I could spend weeks trying to narrow it down, and it's always possible that more than one app could be causing the problem.

I can't speak for the author, but I believe he was referring to "alarms" from a programming sense. I.e. the alarm is what "wakes up" the phone to tell it to go on the internet, fine the latest weather info, and update the widget.
Widgets are working fine on my Nexus 7 (2012) that runs KitKat. I think I had a similar issue on my SGS3 when I first got it, and I posted to those forums a couple years ago, but now for the life of me I cannot remember what the solution was...it may have been to move to Apex!
Interestingly enough, the problem seems to have fixed itself. There were updates to Apex in the meantime, perhaps its that.
My friend with Go Launcher is also seeing the same impact - the issue is gone.

I hesitate to respond for fear of tempting fate . . . But since installing Nova launcher two weeks ago I haven't had a single issue with home screen widgets freezing. I am also experiencing truly great battery life now, but I'm not sure if Nova had anything to do with that since I made a number of other tweaks I'd done trying to fix the widget issue. In any case, I finally feel like my S5 is glitch free and functioning as a next-gen device should.

Mine is still working good - only a few sporadic widget hangs. There must have been an update that fixed the issue - I just did two factory resets and my widgets still update fine.

I have had this happen with many widgets. It's been pretty annoying.
I'm experiencing random crashes of Nova Launcher, running Nova Launcher Prime on A2016U with B29, no root. I'm not seeing a pattern, sometimes it crashes on fingerprint login, sometimes just in the middle of use. A thread suggests removing native widgets so I'm trying to do without the ZTE weather widget that comes with it, which is too bad because I like it, although beautiful widgets offers several nice alternatives. There are dozens of threads on Nova crashes, though mostly for older versions of Android.
I really like the increased density of Nova, and the crashes are just annoying enough to make me question using it. Anyone have insight into Nova crashes.
Using Action 3 launcher here. No problems at all.
I've always used Nova Prime, I'm on B29 as well. I only just rooted today, but I've never had a single crash, regardless of what widgets I've used.
It doesn't seem to me that Nova Prime is the problem.
I'm running Nova Launcher (Prime) and have been since day one, when the phone was 100% stock. Once the unlocked bootloader and root came out, I've been rooted ever since and have used it on stock rooted and the two "de-bloated" ROM's here and have never had it crash.

Ok couple things to do should solve it, First under Nova settings advanced make sure aggressive desktop is checked/toggled on.
And screenlock method check device admin.
Then under phone settings>Security>Device Administrators check Nova Laucher.
And lastly under power manager>power management for apps make sure to turn off all 3 of the toggles for both nova laucher and nova laucher prime if you have it.
That should solve it if not the i'm at a loss.

Hi there @nujackk.
Thx for the advice. I have problems with Nova crashing randomly too after switching to Nougat. I'm on LeeDroid custom Rom and the Rom is solid as a rock ... but I'm not sure which 3 toggles you are talking about, because I don't find these three toggles in my power management - can you please guide me in the direction of where to find it?
Thx in advance, mate

Hey bud. The toggles I'm referring to all probably not present in leedroid. They are part of ZTE's miflavor. In US version it's power management and other versions referred to as miassist or something like that.
One thing I realized I forgot to mention in other post is to be sure to select Nova Launcher as default launcher. Can't tell you how many times that little detail has gotten me.
But the aggressive desktop, and device admin should solve problem most of the time.

Hi again @nujackk
Ok, thats why I cannot see them - thx a lot. I've tried the other things you suggested and I'll see in a couple of hours if it works as Nova usually crashes within a 2 hour cycle on my device ... I've removed the battery saving feature too, so I hope this should solve it - I just love Nova but it irritates me quite a lot that I have to make at hot reboot every second hour or so .
Thx again, mate.

Yeah, I used LeeDroid on my HTC M9. Great ROM, but too many issues with my M9 (went through 5 of them in less than 3 months, all had hardware issues)..... and the 10 didn't have front firing stereo speakers, that's why I went to a Nexus 6P, and now I'm using the A7 now.
