EDIT:
New version for Froyo, support for 24bit color and the full resolution on your camera!
Download HERE
Hey,
Here's the file to install Gallery 3D to the Desire.
You have 2 ways of installing:
1) Install Android USB Driver (search for it) run the following commands:
adb install <filename and path>
2) Copy to SD Card, open in a file manager (make sure "install from unknown sources" is checked in menu) (untested)
New version:
Gallery works great, launches camera, and plays videos!

No it includes Sense's gallery "Photos".
It just gives you 2.1 style gallery that's on the nexus one which looks better than the default for HTC, just install using astro file manager and off you go just place a short cut on one of the screens.
If anyone can figure out how to get launcher 2 style all programs and keep sense ui that be top
Thanks, brummiesteven
Sorry, what is Gallery3D and why do I want it?
It works but not well, for example pressing the camera icon, will crash the application and prompt a force close, there also seems to be some issue with the screen going black for a few seconds.

Eclipse is an IDE, you can develop/run/deploy jar files from it to the phone (also apk I assume). NetBeans works too with JAR files, not sure with APK though.
BTW, you cannot transfer the APK file directly to your phone and install it from there?
Does the 3D gallery replace the Sense one? Or is it just an alternate app?

Are you saying that you can't test your own apps on the Desire through the standard developer tools? That's more than strange. brummiestevens said he could install apps via adb, so testing your own apps should work.

Does anyone know where i could get the apk for the htc smart dialer and contacts applications found in the rogers build?
Android Market. 3 day free trial and then £2.99
Thanks, but that is not what i mean. What i am talking about are custom applications made by htc that only appear on their custom builds, not in the market. I wanted to see if there was a way of obtaining them similar to the way of obtaining htc's custom keyboard.

You could download a Roger's ROM from the dream forum and extract the .apks from there.
@thefoss
could you explain how that is done; just from the point where you extract the rogers rom.
Well I tried installing the HTC Contacts and Dialer APK from the hero build but no success says it will NOT install on This Phone. Even tried the Smart Dialer from the Market and does the same thing.
OH by the way I tried to install them on my Mytouch 3G with no success Someone help us out on this Plz

Your def not moving over htc dialer and contacts to mytouch with out root. Its not just not happening right now. And superdial from the market installs just fine
That app is SLOW :/
If you really want all HTC stuff simply install HTC image...
The problem is that you'll need to install lot of HTC stuff with that dialer...
The idea is cool but... slow :/
HERO applications will NOT work on NON-HERO ROM's.
The HTC Smart Dialer and Contacts is NOT A HERO APPLICATION

Go here and download the Rogers-Wiped Nandroid image. When you unzip that package there will be a collection of .img files. Go here and download Unyaffs (I have only used it on Ubuntu and I have no idea how it will work on Windows) and put it in your android-sdk/tools directory (assuming this has been added to your PATH). Make a directory called system and cd into it. Use unyaffs to extract the system.img file that you downloaded
Code:
unyaffs system.img
In that system folder there should be a bunch of folders and a few files. Look in the app folder. You will see the .apk files there.
Hope this has helped a bit!
i guess the mytouch has to be rooted for this to work on it. they wont install via appmanager, but why does htc_ime.apk work and these wont. im guessing because they are system files. yeah im a noob
Make sure you have the install from "Unknown Sources" checked... Then try again. It is in the APP manager under settings.
ive rooted my mytouch, and the apk's wont install on cyanogen 32B 3.9.9.1
i would really like to know about this as well. my mytouch doesnt have a rooted rom on it but i do have superuser permissions. can i push it using adb? i wouldnt know what commands to use.
I wanted to bring back this thread because I have the same question as the above 2 posters.
Does anyone know why the apk installer wont install the contacts apk (my phone is rooted, and I pulled the apk from a rom that I've used on this phone)?
those HTC utilities are not open source, hence they are not included in any of the cyanogen mods. the HTC framework that is needed for them to work is simply not present.
your only option is to get a rom for the rogers/tim etc which does include them..
Extracted htc_contacts.apk
I've extracted the file htc_contacts.apk and I've opened with Archive manager under Ubuntu.
I've found many many XML files, some certs... I think the installer check the phone model and then says You cannot install the apk. But if the apk is the only source for installatione, we could find the controls in it.
Am I wrong?
I know I sound like a broken record, and I ask "Does this build support java" all the time for android builds
but most builds do not support java, or simply does not include a java J2ME runtime manager. So far I think only a build Zen put out months ago runs java apps and it ran them perfectly.
Instead of asking for it to be added all the time, I was wondering if there was some way that I could do it myself. Is there some magical .apk I can install?
(The one on the market is poor and does not work)
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

if you still have one of zens old builds with it in it you can pull the java.apk and the libjbed.so (something like that, its been a while). and you could try to push the lib into /system/lib and the apk into /system/app
The old xrom build has the files you need. The only problem is it doesn't seem to work in qvga.

I found an old Xrom version that Zen was taking about
system-xrom1.5r4c.sqsh
However, I run into a small problem of not being able to open an extract files from the .sqsh.
That would be awesome if the tattoo dump had the java, which would mean it will work in qvga.

yes it does but it's limited to sdk 3. i've tried to hex edit it with no luck so far. i decompiled the AndroidManifest.xml but thats no help because i can't recompile it. so the only way is to find it in the hex editor and change the value.
ok the java from xDan works in qvga....running opera mini on it right now.
i attached a androidupdate.tar for it. just unzip the androidupdate.zip and copy it to /sdcard/andboot/ and launch the fancy new menu if your using the new non rootfs system and select the update option. let me know how it goes.
View attachment androidupdate.zip
reattached a zip of the working files pulled from my phone. java.zip. manually push these or create an androidupdate.tar by making a system dir and putting in /app/Jbed.apk and /lib/libjbedvm.so in and tar it up.

Um, if by push you mean opening the androidinstaller.tar with 7zip and manually placing the the lib and ajava.apk into thier respective folders, yes.
Otherwise no, and I'm not that proficient.
see my post above there is a link to an androidupdate.tar. it's only tested in donut in qvga 240x320 with lcd density @ 120 but should work for all resolutions.
if you have adb installed you can do it manually from your already installed system if your running on nand or ext2 and can write to it. if you get an error about the system being read only then.
Code:
adb shell
Code:
mount -o remount rw /system
then exit the adb shell usually by issuing the command
Code:
exit
then go to where you have xDans java downloaded and
Code:
adb push Jbed.apk /system/app
then
Code:
adb push libjbedvm.so /system/lib
and you should be set.

Perfect, great work guys, I'll include it in my update pack I'm working on for the build.
Thank you! Very much appreciated.
uploaded a zip of the working apk/lib pulled from my personal donut build a couple posts back. i didn't make an androidupdate.tar for it. but like i said the files are confirmed working for me in donut so if someone else running donut or eclair wants to try them out let me know if they work.
Just wanted to give you an update Zen.
I could not get java to work on Eclair 2.1
It would force close every time.
I have added java to Myn's newest donut build and it works. Kinda. The apps install and open up, but they are stretched to the right and skewed.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Running 240x320/110
Well, I have discovered why the screen gets skewed. It's because of the 110 screen density. If I change it to 120, it looks and works perfectly. However, this effectively break Myns build as you can not even use the dialer in 120.
Is there anyway to modify the java files you posted to work in 110?

Does anybody know where to get the default set of live wallpapers for CM5.0.7? I know you can get ripoffs in the market, but I really think the default ones are the cleanest.
Thanks for any help!
You can probably extract them from CM's Nexus One build over in the Nexus One developer forum.....
I extracted the apk from the N1 rom and it installed fine. FYI the water one doesn't work with our phones (G1), and the galaxy one doesn't seem to load. The polar clock and the grass work though.
Was really hoping to have the water one working, my mom showed it to me on her Droid last week, dope as hell.
Can you post the apk you got? Or at least point me in the direction so I can learn how to extract it myself? Thanks!
Basically all you need to extract something from a ROM is the ROM itself (as a zip file), and then a program that will let you "open" the zip without unzipping it. Personally, I use 7-zip and it has never failed me. All you need to do is right click on the ROM file and choose open under the 7zip menu.
This of course is assuming you have Windows as your OS on your PC. After you open the ROM you can browse to the /system/app folder and you have access to all the N1 apk files there. Presumably, all you need to do is copy the live wallpapers apk from that ROM to your G1 and install it. I haven't verified that this works, but it would be the way to do it.
Good luck
~DM

I have never tried adb and wouldn't know what to do. Is there another way to get it working. Tried installing normally, using Root Explorer and placing in system/app but I get force closes with these methods.
Edit: So I researched and it seems as though the adb method is pretty much the same as using root explorer (correct me if I'm wrong) and yet I still get force closes. FYI I did try with adb and still no luck...

Well, almost drag and drop (sorry, I deleted that bit from my comment before posting since I don't really use drag-and-drop, the keyboard is just faster). You have to use Ctrl+C (or right click -> copy if you fancy) from explorer/desktop/where-ever then right click -> paste in droid explorer at the appropriate location.
You'll get a dialog popping up showing you the copy progress (it's pretty quick).

What you could do is create a root/system/app folder in the root folder of your android build on your sd card, place the latinime.apk in that folder, restart and the file should be placed in the system/app folder on your phone. Or you could use ES Explorer and place the latinime.apk in the system/app folder on your phone.

I'm currently using the HD build as well, and I noticed that I couldn't use the droid multi touch keyboard which is a real bummer cuz I really liked that one. It worked on Motoman's Black and Blue build.
Anyways, I'll try this and see what happens.
edit: nope, doesn't work. It seems that the DesireHD does not have the stock android keyboard, as I didn't have to overwrite any files. Does this make any sense? I really want a keyboard without arrows and that does not have haptic feedback. The newest version of better keyboard removed the option to 1) go without keypad sounds and 2) go without haptic feedback. Really don't feel like paying for another keyboard though, as it just seems silly.

Open a command prompt (cmd.exe from the start menu > search bar). cd to your android sdk folder, where you put the apk & so files. type the following...
adb push Latinime.apk /system/app
adb push libjni_latinime.so /system/lib/
long press in a text field > select input type > pick android keyboard.

U can download a rom like iced glacier, and you'll need root explorer. extract the the zip. The apk is in system system/ apps. The lib is in the lib folder, although i don't know the name of it. What i do is use search when in the system folder, search swype. The two will show. Then you'll have to put those on the same folders on your system

I was able to put everything in the right folders but when I tried to use swype it had the look of the old swype but no functionality. How so you flash it in recovery like the other guy did?

Check the post below. It's for the G2, but works for MT4G as well (just verified).

As the post suggests, put your Swype files in the same folder as ADB and you should be fine. Note that you will have to go to Settings > Language & keyboard, and manually enable Swype since it's disabled by default.
is there any free "root manager" app out there i can get for this?
Thanks in advance!

I do believe you can use AndroidMate from the market.
ok, so apparently I don't know what I'm doing lol.
Sorry if this appears totally n00bish but thats what I am.
If I extract the .apk and the libswypecore.so from another Rom and place them into their respective folders on the Rom I'd like to use, (ex. placing swype.apk into the "app" folder on cm7) and then flash the Rom and start from scratch, shouldn't that work?
I actually tried it and it didn't. Am i missing something? I was hoping the answer was that obvious but it failed. Swype shows up but i get "swype package you installed is configured for another device" message and it continues to only function as a regular keyboard.
I'd prefer to avoid going through the CMD prompt on my computer again because without super detailed instructions, I really don't know how to go about doing it. So if anyone, anywhere can help me out it would be super appreciated. I checked the forums and I keep getting lost in the words.
(perhaps shouldn't have rooted my phone if I can't make it that far huh? but we all have to start somewhere I suppose)
Forgive me for making this so long winded but the more details i give up front the less back and forth messages that wing clog up forums.
