probably a problem that not many other people have encountered, but I kept having an error message when sending an sms to my wife, using her entry in my contacts, along the lines of "not enough numbers in this phone number".
I thought it strange seeing as the phone number i had is the right one and works for calling etc.
just realised why. it only happens when i click "new message" and then type the first few characters of the name, then select it from the suggested names. no problems if i just select the message thread and add a new message.
the problem is that my wife's name is inordinately long (31 characters not including spaces) and that there is a limit in how many characters the SMS "to" field will allow ... and by the time it had her name in there, there was only room remaining for half her phone number.
so it was just trying to send to half of her phone number cos that's all there was space for!
anyone know a reg hack to increase the maximum allowed characters in sms "to:" field? otherwise i'll just have to chop off half her name

I noticed that everytime I send a sms from my contacts their names are not shown and only their number. Is there anyway the names of contact appear instead of their number?

Search for Paragon Software sms_name.
The program sms_names will only show the names of contact when a sms is recieved. It does'nt help in showing the names of your receipient when sending the message to them. Their numbers are shown instead of there names.....
I have to double check if the number appearing matches to the name of the contact.
you can tab & hold on a contact then select "Send sms" ... this will display only the number ... but in an empty sms if you click the "To" field and type the first 3 letters and then select the name this will display the name as well ... weird but true!!

unfort. there is no concept of groups in pOutlook ... one good trick would be selecting the required names then copy the "To" part and paste it into a text file for future usage

There is the way to send sms to group. I should
1. buy Pocket Informant
2. create groups
3. check numers belong to certain group
4. hold and click Extras-Send SMS
This procedure will open inbox with checking contacts.

I installed a new ROM and am missing a little feature now. Unfortunately I don't know if it was some hack or tool I installed or something to enable with the ROM itself.
When I wrote a new SMS and entered a few letters, a list would drop down with matching recipients names (and only their GSM numbers), and I could select from there. This is gone now, I can just enter the name, and when I press "Send" I'm taken to a separate page of matching recipients with all their numbers...
How can I get that back?

i was searching for this but found no answer..
in Messaging (and also on TF3d) i see number of sms and not of the contact who has send me the sms. only from persones that i have as favorites (on persones tab on tf3d) the sms shows correct name..
is there any setting which shows only names..
i have tryed allready to move the value in HCLU/.../phone (which is in topaz wiki) from 8 to 9 and to 10 and back to 8 but it shows only numbers...

This happened to me today. I had one of my friends numbers entered incorrectly so obviously when the text came it showed the number and not the name.
After correcting the number in my contact list, on the black touch flo screen listing the texts, it still shows the text with the number and not the name, even though when I click on the text, it correctly identifies it with the correct person and shows it in their list of text messages.
All other texts from him now show his name in the black touch flo screen, but that original text still just shows his number. This must mean the sender is stored with the message the moment it arrives, instead of being looked up whenever it is required.
This also means it should technically be possible to rename who your texts came from by editing some file or other.
Shouldn't there be a contact drop down in the "TO:" line when composing an SMS - I don't see one and I'm accustomed to it being there.
This also takes up the character count in the SMS field, same behavior is exhibbted in all message applications, i.e. outlook, windows live.
It seems that auto suggestion is disabled by XT9 - although turning off XT9 by turning off predictive text in settings does not correct this - thoughts?
This wouldnt help your situation. But i remember composing emails and that dam contact list would come up. It was so hard getting to the actualy subject line because if i would click down it would think im trying to select a contact on the contact list. Im happen it was dropped
When I begin typing a name in this field, I do have a drop down list of contacts...
I am not using T9.
You can still type your contact's name directly from the homescreen, and then select "sms" by rolling the trackball left-right.

i have the same problem.
When composing a new sms or email on my other wm5 ppc, typing the first few characters of a contact's name would call up a list but this just doesn't happen in my htc snap.
anyone have a solution?
Did a search for this and I didn't see anything so If I missed it, sorry just point me to it. I'm having an issue with the names of my contacts not showing up in the call log or on text messages. If I go to the actual contacts section all the names are there but if anyone calls me or texts me it just says (unknown) and then there phone number but If text someone it shows there name but then when they text back it shows as a new message (not in the same group as the message I sent) and does the same thing with (unknown) and there phone number (even though when I sent the original text there name showed. (Hope that all made sense)
I have checked and all of my contacts are in the actual contacts section so I know everything is syncing ok I just can't figure out why there names wont show up in calls, call logs or texts. Any Ideas?
