plug the phone, open a terminal as administrator/root and type
adb stop-server
adb start-server
adb devices
the last command must return your device name-id
If not there is smth wrong with your installation
The device didn't show up do you know what I could have done wrong? Do I have to turn on mass storage? Could it have something to do with my drivers, can't remember installing any... And in the device manager I see four android with a orange triangle with am exclamation mark inside.

No you don't need to enable mass storage, but you need to enable USB debugging from dev settings from the device. Use these drivers

I had the same issue updating my Nexus 7 in adb download mode device not found. You will also notice in system setting device driver is showing an error. You can download Adb driver installer which should detect any missing driver and fix the issue.
It worked for me straight away otherwise I had no way round getting to solve the problem. Fheww!! hope it works for you
Many Thanks.

Hello all!
I just aquired a Find 5 and found it to be Rooted with PacRom installed. When I plugged it into my Windows 8 PC via the OEM cable, I couldn't get it to be recognized. I've downloaded drivers from Oppo and tried a few other suggestions in the Find 5 section here, but I can't seem to get the two to talk to each other. Does anyone have any instructions or help for me to get a connection? I'm at my wits end here.
Thanks in advance!
Update: Okay, it will acknowledge that it's present when I go into "Control Pannel>Device Manager", but I still can't transfer any files to or from it. What's the remaining piece of the puzzle I'm missing?

Hello guys!
I have already read some topics on this forum but it is my first message.
As indicated in the title, I cannot connect my Nexus 4 on my computer using MTP. This computer is running Windows 8.1 Update 1. So far I have tried every method I have seen on the web so I am a little bit desperate.
I have tried to plug my device on other computers and it was automatically detected on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 Update 1 and Ubuntu 14.04.
On my computer, as it does not auto-configure MTP I have tried to install ADB drivers, hoping it would help me. Universal ADB drivers, Naked Drivers and drivers from the SDK didn't changed anything. I also tried changing USB port.
It always recognised my phone as a "Nexus 4" in the "Other devices" section of the Device Manager (I do not have "Android Device" section), except in when MTP + debugging are activated. Then I have both "Nexus 4" and "MTP", in "Other devices" section.
It does not work in PTP mode either and I also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Nexus Root Toolkit, even if I do not see how it can help...
One last point: I have the "connected as multimedia device" notification on my Nexus 4 when MTP is activated, even if it's not recognised by Windows.
Do you have any idea of what I can do?
Have you tried Nexus 4-specific drivers? Try following this guide.

Last time I had such an issue: I uninstalled the drivers using Device Manager, then installed the drivers from that guide, plugged in my phone and it worked..
Here is another post from another forum that has something you could try:

1. make sure Settings ->Storage -> Menu[3 dots on top right] -> USB Computer Connection is MTP
2. USB debugging is disabled (if you ever enabled it)
3. make sure the drivers installed is MTP drivers rather than adb device(you do this when you unlock/root nexus)
point 3 is important. thats the reason why its not getting detected

2. Where in setting do I check for USB debugging?
3. How do I check this? (I'm not rooted)
Click to collapse
2. developer option.. if you have not enabled developer option then you wouldnt have enabled USB debugging. so skip this
3. Connect your nexus to PC-->Go to Control panel-->device manager
you will see something like Android adb in device manager
Right Click and click "Update device Software"
Click "Browse your Computer for driver Software"
Click "Let me Pick from a list of device drivers on my Computer"
Click Next, for the device list shown.

Thank you for spending some of your time to help me Marvlesz, I really appreciate.

Yes, I saw it worked for a lot of people, for what I have read, but it seems that I am not that lucky
When picking from the list, I tried from the Android Device section and it displays "Unable to find any drivers for this device". Same Results in “Mobile devices”.
When I try “Show all devices”, I have a lot of possibilities. I just tried “MTP Device” from both “Standard MTP-Compliant Device” and “Standard MTP-Compliant devices” sections, and it displayed “The install class is not present or is invalid”
Am I cursed?
I was wondering, is it possible that the problem is coming from my hardware? Or its drivers? (Those for the motherboard maybe?)
EDIT: I just found this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2493734
I will try it and I will keep you updated when it is done.
EDIT 2:
So I tried the solution... and it worked! :good:
I had the N version of Windows 8.1, mainly to avoid useless software like Windows Media Player, and it was the exact problem.
Sorry for taking a little of your time, and thank you again!
No problems, I'm glad you had it fixed.
Hi!
I've been having some problems with MTP and I've been searching for days and finally found a solution!
My problem was that MTP was showing a yellow exclamation in device manager and an error "Code 31"
After installing, uninstalling and re-installing dozens of drivers I found this solution:
1. With phone unplugged open cmd (Run as Administrator)
2.Type this command:
Code:
net localgroup Administrators "local service" /add
3. Plug phone
4. ???
5. Profit!

Well maybe it is a bit dangerous..however, it does not add your local account to the administrator group. just the "Local Service" account.
This is the only solution I've found for my MTP problem and I thought it would be good to share cause I've spent days trying to fix it.
Anyway, I believe there are many things we do in these forums here(generally, at xda forums. not m8 specific), that make our phones less secure, but we still do it because we love to control our devices in any way we want.

Easiest way is just to swich off device (yes off ?) plug to Pc and wait for Windows to install correct drivers
Works for me ?

This for didn't work on my PC. But what did work (similar) is to manually select the device in Device Manager, and pick the option to pick the drivers, then selected the generic Android MTP device.

Hi guys and girls...
I already wrote this guide in the Pixel XL forum. I'm adding it here for convenience, since our devices share (i guess?!) the same hardware for some part. Feel free to ask a MOD to delete it if i'm wrong...
I recieved my Pixel XL almost two weeks ago. Plugged it into an old Windows 7 x64 laptop and Windows instantly updated the driver. On a 2016 Dell E7450 Windows 10 x64 laptop... It didn't. Tried the Google USB drver package, but it didn't work either. Windows reports about a problem with an INF file and doesn't finalize the driver install...
I just saw someone reported the same issue in Q/A. I thought it would be a good idea to write a step by step guide.
Click to show the guide below:
Right click on the Windows start menu icon and select Device manager:
From here plug your Pixel using your USB cord to your computer. Pull the notification bar on your Pixel and tap on:
USB charging this device
Tap for more options
From the menu, select:
Transfet files
From here, you should see an "Unknown device" or an "MTP device" with an exclamation mark.
Right click on the device and select "Update driver software":
Click: "Browse my computer for driver software:
Click: Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer:
Scroll down till you find "LeMobile Android Device" and select it:
Here, select the second option: "MTP USB device"
Success
Now recognized in device manager:
In "This PC":
Hopefully, it will help some people.
But what to do when MTP-USB-Device isnt there ??

In MTP mode is sais "MTP" and in PTP mode it sais "Nexus 5X" (i have an Nexus 5x).
On my Laptop is sais "LeMobile ADB Composite" or something similar and there it works. But on my Desktop i have the new Win10 Creator Updates and on my Laptop i still have the regular Win10. Before the Creators Update it worked on my Desktop, so since then there is something "broken".

So both methods from picture 2 and 3 which normally should work don't work for me :/.

I saw this also before. I don't have this file. I downloaded it from a homepage, copied it in there and tried to install it, but installing it failed. But i don't know how to officially get this file into the INF-folder besides just copying in there which doesnt work (actually i think it worked a year ago where i had this problems as well but it doesnt work anymore).
I have Windows N and the Media FEature Pack KB .....81 installed, so this isn't the problem either.

Hey,
Either it must be a simple fix and i can't troubleshoot it properly as i'm not in front of your computer, or part of the stuff missing in Windows N is not included in the pack you installed.
Keep searching. Post in the windows help forum. See if a real tech figured a way of fixing the issue.
I'm really sorry.
