Slow boot and app2sd question - Nexus One General

I`m trying to setup app2sd.
1. i wiped both SD and cache and data
2. installed latest Desire ROM
Did all these steps with no errors
adb remount
adb push 04apps2sd /system/etc/init.d/
adb push e2fsck /system/xbin
adb shell
chmod 755 /system/xbin/e2fsck
chmod 755 /system/etc/init.d/04apps2sd
mkdir /system/sd
Sill no more than 100 MB free space
I tried deleting /system/sd to recreate it because it seams i have 2 directories: 1 is called SD and the oder is called sd with a squre next to it. No matter where i try i cannot delete it because it is in use.
When i try all newly installed apps dissapear and i cannot access them anymore (need to re-download from market)
I tried booting into recovery, but there the sd folder does not exist.
Also booting takes 3-4 minutes and it always boot's twice (1 time reset)
Any ideas?

Any luck on this? I was planning on trying to setup app2sd on a desire rom using this method too..

Rooted Hero Fails adb remount, can't move files from SD

I rooted my hero last night and tried out a few different ROMs but eventually decided to revert to stock and make some manual changes. I used nandroid to restore to just after the root (1.56.651.2). I was able to remove some apps using adb, but the adb remount command fails (permission denied), and I'm unable to push a new bootscreen on to the phone. I also tried a Root File Manager and pre-kitchen as alternatives for the bootscreen, and neither one works. The Root Manager won't paste the files from SD into /system/media/ and pre-kitchen just reboots the phone.
Any suggestions?
Any chance this has something to do with downloading only up to SDK Platform 1.5? I'm at a total loss. I RUU'd my phone, did a clean root at startup using adb shell, and I still have the same problem. The adb remount command won't work, and I can't push anything into the system directory. For what it's worth, when I still had Root Manager installed I was able to toggle RO R/W in any directory with no problem, and I could move files around within the ROM... but I couldn't move anything into it from the SD. I'm new at this, so I have no idea what the problem might be. Anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions?
If anyone else runs into this problem, this solution worked for me:
adb shell
# su
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# chmod 777 /system (Or any subdirectory you want to push to inside system)
# exit
adb push <local file> <device location>
Restore modified permissions when done.
Though I'm still not sure why this is necessary in place of adb remount.
I'm pretty sure the adb remount command will not work on the stock rom. You should be able to do it with just this command instead:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

Thanks... didn't realize stock wouldn't accept adb remount. If I use the above line from within shell, that doesn't help me push anything on to the phone though... so I needed to enable global permission and then do the push. Oddly enough I tried the same approach last night using Root Manager, and the transfer from SD still failed, even after I applied 777 to the dir I was trying to modify. The current solution may be kind of tedious, but at least it works.
you really shouldn't do 777 on your filesystem, ANY app can then write to your system, overwrite things, or install malicious code. Just remount manually and you should be able to push anything you want, just remember that w/ the stock rom you also don't get a full busybox either.
I'm not positive, but I would think after you remount, you should be able to "adb push" to /system. I suppose it might be specific to that shell, but I would think not.
You just may have to do it once each time you boot your phone.
Edit - err nevermind... you're having permission errors.... um... change adbd on the phone to run as root? not sure how off the top of my head...

Removing unwanted sense applications.

So i have rooted my HTC desire phone, now i wonder if is it posibble to remove any stock applications from it, without flashing someones rom.
Apps like, Flick, Footprints, Google Talk, Peep, Quickoffice, Stocks.
This are the apps i would like to remove, or atleast make them stop starting and restarting each time i kill them with some task manager.
Yes, it's possible.
You have to do all the steps of rooting till you'll reach "recovery" mode (just before wipe and flash).
than just run the debugger
Code:
./adb shell
withing the shell
Code:
mount /system
list your apps with:
Code:
ls /system/app
now you can delete app:
Code:
rm /system/app/FriendStream*
and so on
It's good idea to backup your apps on sdcard
Code:
mount /sdcard
mkdir /sdcard/backup
cp /system/app/* /sdcard/backup
after work is finished
Code:
umount /sdcard
umount /system
reboot and you're done
It's good idea to wipe data after removing apps to avoid some junk in app manager.
Wow! Thanks a lot for that!
I was trying adb commands with the phone in USB Disk Drive mode (debugging enabled) and I couldn't touch anything off the /system partition.
It never occurred to me to try in Recovery mode though
by saying it's a good idea to wipe data after removing some apps do you mean hard reset ??? or this just deletes the junk files?????
also do i need to flash the rooted update for this or just enter recovery mode ?

[Q] 1st update froyo

should i flash it. i dont have root
WOW! i cant believe no one has replied to you.
if you take a look at the first post with the topic
[ROM] Official AOSP 2.2 OTA
but you mentioned you dont have root. so try installing alogcat from the marketplace and capture the whole deal. then you can email directly from the app.
logcat isnt going to do much, it prefetches the files, need to pull the update.zip from adb
ok, so i havnt gotten the notice yet.
but need a bit of help prepping for when i do.
i have the android sdk installed on my desktop, and can create a virtual device etc...
but when i open the cmd prompt and try to run adb devices it says it is populating a list but i see no results or no file created.
so i tried just running adb logcat and it stops at waiting for device.
any pointers. im running win7x64 ultimate
well, i screwed it up. i removed the usb drivers and set it to debugging mode and got it working.
so i am able to run adb shell etc...
once i get the notice ill be ready to do an adb pull
adb shell
su
cd /cache/
ls
adb pull /cache/<package_name>.zip .

but how do you know the new radio and spl update name?
you should get that by running su then "cd /cache/ ; ls"
right now i have
download-1.apk
downloadfile.apk
recovery
lost+found
so after it is precached i run that "cd cache/ ; ls" i should have another file or two in there
that would be the file you run adb pull /cache/*.*
a tad bit of help, as a test i am trying to do
adb pull cache/downloadfile.apk d:\
but i get
remote object 'cache/downloadfile.apk' does not exist
i also tried adb pull /cache/downloadfile.apk d:\
and get the same.
edit:
tried doing a adb push
D:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb push d:\test.txt /cache
failed to copy 'd:\test.txt' to '/cache/test.txt': Permission denied
so i dont have permission to put anything there, which means i likely dont have permission to pull from there
D:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb pull /cache/downloadfile.apk d:\
remote object '/cache/downloadfile.apk' does not exist
so i opened another cmd prompt and and did an adb shell
su
and i am su
so while the other window was open and i was su i tried the same commands again and got the same results.
edit2:
D:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb shell ls /cache
opendir failed, Permission denied
so it is definately a su/permissions issue.
Are you rooted? If not use Universal Androot.
*anticipation*

Here do this:
First if you have root, open up terminal or cmd prompt if you are on windows:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount yaffs2 /cache
chmod 777 /cache
that will change the permissions allowing for read and write.
Now exit out of shell and just adb pull /cache/
That will pull everything out of the cache partition.
BAM!!! perfect!
i new it was permissions related. just couldnt figure out the "mount -o rw,remount yaffs2 /cache" part. might i ask you to break that down for me? at least the yaffs2 part.
thanks!
so once the update hits i am ready to grab the files.

So the YAFFS2 part of the code I put up there is designating the file system in which we are reading/writing.
YAFFS2 is the most popular and widely used format for flash memory.
please allow me.
yaffs2 is a filesystem type. /cache is of course the directory. -o is for option.
rw: read/write
remount: remount /cache again with new option.

Oh yeah and BTW, you can change the permissions back if you want after your done, otherwise I believe you can just reboot the phone and it fixes it, not entirely sure, I was trying to rewrite my default.prop to get adb remount to work with stock 1.6 rooted, but I am getting and access denied issue.
perfect was about to ask what the -o was but i tried mount --help and mount -h both resulted in nothing. then you reply sharpt71
thanks again all.
i am now ready to pull the update and upload once i get the update. hopefully soon!
Rather than the remounting and chmoding so you can adb pull.
You could probably get away with
Code:
su
cp /cache/<whatever> /sdcard
Then mount the SD card or put it in a card reader.

You probably could I just know that this is a sure fire way to grab everything in cache directly to the machine, otherwise if you aren't next to a machine you could probably do a copy like you said.
My 2nd update failed, do you guys think the files are still in my cache?

[Q] droid x download permissions issue

so im stuck and can not figure this out. for some reason the permissions for the download folders on my sd card do not have any user permissions checked. i can not download anything at all but the market is fine as it is on the internal memory i suppose. the only reason i came across the user permissions issue was because i found another post where someone had the same problem with downloading and corrected the issue by using root explorer and manually adding user permissions to any folder he used for downloading. now... here is my problem... i used root explorer and when i try to add user permissions to these folders, the settings that changed do not stick. i check mark the 3 boxes and accept the changes but if i go back into that folders specific permissions, they are unchecked once again. how can i get it to not revert back or better yet how can i just resolve the issue in whole so i dont have to keep fixing folder permissions on the sd card for app that downloads? i dont see why the sd card of all places would start having these permission issues. the guys post i came across tried to tie this issue to the fix permissions option in rom manager saying it may have caused the problem but i didnt use rom manager to fix permissions until this problem started. i was on liberty 1.5 rom then reverted back to rooted stock where i still have the problem with all downloading except the market again. any help would be greatly appreciated!
58 views and not a single response? wow.... so very shocking to see that, i bet if i had post this in the dev forum i would have gotten 15+ responses just to say that im in the wrong section then anther 30 for people to argue back and fourth on how everyone is being rude or that this is the reason devs stay in irc...
Give this a try if you have the sdk and adb set up.
from a command prompt:
1) adb devices (make sure that your phone shows up)
2) adb shell
3) su (assuming you have rooted your phone)
4) cd /mnt/sdcard/download (or whatever the folder on your sdcard for downloads is called)
5) chmod 777 /mnt/sdcard/download (or whatever your download folder is called)
this should change the permissions on your sdcard to have full permissions.
thanks for your reply! im grateful, but wouldnt that only change the permissions for the "download" folder? which is mostly only a default location for apps such as the browser?
The way sysadmin-x is suggesting makes the permissions way different than they are by default, I wouldn't recommend doing it that way.
If you want to change permissions on the entire sd card to what they are by default, try running(as root)
Code:
chown -R system:sdcard_rw /mnt/sdcard && chmod -R 075 /mnt/sdcard
Edit: that code messes up the permissions on one folder, after running that you should also run
Code:
chown -R root:root /mnt/sdcard/.android_secure && chmod -R 000 /mnt/sdcard/.android_secure
Just do this: download a terminal emulator from the market. Open the app. Type su and press enter. Give it root access. Type chmod 777 /sdcard and press enter.
Please note you need root to do this

[HOW-TO] Move /data/data to SDCard

As some people experienced, default partinitioning of internal ROM is a bit missed than usual needs and our ZTE's still complains about disk space running out.
One of the solutions is to move /data/data to SD-ext partinition (only with A2SD enabled!)
how to do that?
Start an adb shell
Code:
rm -r /system/sd/data
cp -pr /data/data /system/sd/data
cd /data/data
now use
Code:
du -hs *
to check which directories are the biggest and contains non-critical software added by user (eg another music player or GPS navigation) and remove them to reduce disk usage (system will start to complain about disk space).
Use text editor to create a file "05data"
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
# mount /system/sd/data to /data/data
if [ -d /system/sd/data ];
then
/system/xbin/mount -o bind /system/sd/data /data/data
fi
then push it to android device
Code:
adb remount
adb push path_to_file /etc/init.d/05data
adb shell chmod +x /etc/init.d/05data
Disclaimer:
I am using GSF B27 rom with A2SD, solution to symlink /data/data with /system/sd/data folder failed on my phone (bootloop) so I've created solution mentioned above. Binding than symlinking is safer, because original /data/data is a failover container for user files.
to move data to SD card it needs apps2sd text in init.rc then the bin files! ex this:
#!/system/bin/sh
# mount /system/sd/data to /data/data
if [ -d /system/sd/data ];
then
/system/xbin/mount -o bind /system/sd/data /data/data
if it have that then edit it!
and then the init files in /system/etc/init.d maybe them can edit on Linux or if can't then needs to use other program or then notepad or other programs on windows to edit init.d folder files...
then... it needs APP2SD files which works on Blade...
Now the Data(s)/APP(S) moving needs to be enabled....
If wants something else DATA to move SD Card then I don't know how... (maybe with File Explorer apps)...
Hi!
I am using GSF b27 on my Blade and because I was running out of internal memory, created a partition using clockworkmod (v5) recovery, following this tutorial:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/331205-guide-how-to-get-more-free-space-for-your-apps/
After reboot and trying to (re)install some apps, nothing changed...all my apps are still installed on my internal memory (that is full).
I checked the folder /system/sd but all the folders inside it are empty...it looks like A2SD is not running!
Isn't A2SD included in GSF27 and supposed to run automatically after a ext partition has been created?
Any help is welcome! Thanks
Tuc
A2SD is enabled after you create an ext2 partinition, right.
Now You have to copy *all* directories from /data/data to /system/sd/data
(how-to in post #1) AND delete directories of no-so-critical applications like Your another MP3 player or less played game from /data/data folder. You should have ~50MiB free on /data partiniton
Then, creating an initscript mentioned above will make an overlay of /system/sd/data folder on /data/data folder, so all needed files are on their place. Overlay instead of symlinking is better, because You have (stil aging, so old) backup of most important things, so in case of ****up You'll loose less.
Thanks for those details.
Everything went smooth until the following command:
adb shell chmod +x /etc/init.d/05data
Click to collapse
ADB answers "Bad mode"...
I'm really not familiar with this ADB tools
EDIT: The folders in system/sd are still empty...Is there any SIMPLE solution to activate A2SD without ADB shell stuffs???! I don't mind uninstall all my apps to re-install them in this system/sd folder, I just need to know how to activate automatic installations in this folder instead of the internal memory... Thanks
Tuc
It's not about deleting apps and installing them.
It's about moving ALL data from /data/data to /system/sd/data, removing unnecessary files from /data/data (to get more free space to make android stop to complain about free space) and creating overlay from SD card on /data partiniton to make them back.
There's no directory called /system/sd/* on my LG P690. Can't I use the /sdcard/data directory or the /data/sdext2/data instead?
