Switching from RC30 to RC08

Hi there, this is my first post here so apologies if i lack any detail.
Just to be clear - I have searched the entire forum and found nothing with the instructions i require.
I changed my G1 build from RC08 (uk) to RC30 when i unlocked my phone for root privileges, but i now have an app running called MyFaves-
I have read about this app and it doesn't look good, as i don't want thousands of sms' sent to a server costing me a fortune...
So i am really asking that because i live in the uk, and now have rc30, does this mean my phone sends sms' to the US server (i am on t-mobile uk), and if so, then i would rather loose the root privileges to save my wallet.
So then if it is costing me (i cannot check my credit for some odd reason, so will not know if it is costing me until march) then how do i revert back to RC08 (uk) like it was before i did this?

I dont really know much about what your asking but just to check if its costing you, you could phone tmobile free on 150 or send a text "ba" or "al" to check your balance and allowance, respectively, or log on through the tmobile site and you can check. Sorry if you have tried these and it hasnt helped, just a tip if its useful.

you could, alternatively, flash the APD firmware which doesn't have the MyFaves app. I was running RC30 on my phone and when my bill came through it charged me £4 extra. I have no idea if this was because of myfaves or because i simply went over my allowance (more likely, i do text alot ).
If you want to revert back to RC8 you can simply rename this file to update.zip and reflash it.
(don't forget to wipe first )

this should be in a sticky with all of the other stock rom versions in here to flash to origninall.... i had a horrible time finding the rc 30 stock rom lol Can Some please do this?

ok, i found out today that it isn't costing me, but i have about 50 sms' sent in 4 days because of this... but because it's to a t-mobile server theres no problems as its free.
Meltus - does your method allow me to maintain root access?
(i only ask because this RC30 is american and slightly different to the RC08, and has features with i dont like - eg puts random lines in telephone numbers... which in the UK we dont have, so is annoying)

Yes the file linked above maintains root. It is JesusFreke's modified RC8.

paid apps in denmark

I can't find it any where so i need to ask, is there any way to get paid apps on my desire, when i can't download paid apps from market ?

I am in Denmark too. I use Marketenabler and so I can fake my provider as T -Mobil (US), and see both paid and free apps.

Yes.
Another easy solution is to use a sim card from another country where paid Android applications is possible. I have tried with an austrian sim card in Denmark without problems. Just download the applications using WiFi.

There's a third way that requires neither root nor foreign sim. It does require that you install Android SDK on you computer, and it's a bit of a hassle to set up the first time, but once you've done that, you have easy access to paid apps. It's what I used before I rooted, and it worked like a charm.
It's too complicated for me to remember off hand, and I'm a new user so apparently I can't post links, but try googling "paid apps i emulator" or "paid apps i telefonen"; it's the top search result for me. *
(it's in Swedish, but being Danish you should have little difficulties with that; sorry non-Scandinavians - try googling key words... Although we're probably pretty much the only ones left without paid apps in Market by now

ok I think the safest way for you to do this is buy a sim from a country that has market enabled. Rooting your phone just to be able to buy apps is a bit risky. Installing the SDK might be the cheapest solution tbh. And you just cant brick your pc doing that

Not sure what you mean; you don't "install" Market per se...
Once you've installed SDK on your PC, you create an AVD (Android Virtual Device), which is basically an Android emulator on your PC. In this emulator you can buy whatever you want from Market, and then push (or copy) it to your actual phone.
Are you following a guide? If so, which, and how far have you gotten?

Dear eham, it seems to be a good workaround for me (for I don't wanna risk rooting and dont wanna change to sim card too frequently), just a few questions to ask about the emulator method.
would I still be able to update the paid apps if I download the paid apps through emulator? and will I be able to install it back if I flash my phone?

The answers are yes and yes.
You own the app (it's tied to your google account), so it's yours to update or whatever, but as long as you're unrooted you will have to do it in the emulator (as you can't access the paid app's Market page on your phone), and then push the updated .apk to your phone, replacing the old one. Be sure to add an SD-card to your emulator, and use ASTRO in your emu-phone to backup your apps to it as your emu-phone will have the same ****ty amount of internal memory as your real phone (if it's anything like mine .
And yes. Use ASTRO (or any app backup.. app) to also backup your apps to your real SD and/or your PC, and you can reinstall them whenever you want.

Very well said, Thx mate! I'll go try it out! Really wanna support paid apps! Anyone got an idea when will Google bring paid apps to other countries or Paypal for paid apps? It's non-sense for me in HK to be able to buy N1 though Google checkout and not able to buy paid apps.

It didn't only surprised you mate, you shocked me as well when Iphone's app store has already been working in HK since like 2-3 years ago? Man!
well, one more thing to ask, Google had just push out the newest SDK, I am using it for the workaround, but seems it uses 1.6 for the emulator, could I use 2.2 (or at least 2.1) instead so that I could install my apps onto the SD card?
besides, how could I push .apk to my phone? basically how could I find the stuff on SD on my emulator?

Like I said in an earlier post, I went and rooted my phone, so I haven't used the SDK method in a while, and I couldn't really tell you if you could use 2.2 or not. I see no harm in trying, but I'm going to leave the answer up to someone who might know a little better.

Maybe I'm missing something, but once you've pushed/saved, and backed up, the apps, you don't really need them on the AVD (emu-phone) anymore, so if you're running low on memory just uninstall as needed. You've paid for them, so you can always reinstall from Market if you ever feel the need.

Dear eham (I really have to be this formal to express my appreciation )
finally got all things sorted out and successfully purchased 1 app and pushed to my phone (automatically through Android market), finally I can show my appreciation to the apps developers!
well, even though I can now get paid apps, being a non-root user with 2.1, I still have to wait for the official Froyo update from HTC to further enjoy apps (my memory is certainly full just after the 2nd day I bought my Desire).

how to set timer back

when you go settings-->telephone info -->software info on the bottom you find usage, the timers of incomming and outgoing conversations.
how can I get that to go back to 0.

First, it is not right to do that (you would not like others to do that to you)
Secondly, thanks god (for the others), there is no way you can do that...

If your reason is not to leave any personal information on the phone, then flash it with a stock ROM and wipe the SD card (assuming that you are supplying it with the phone).
If your reason is to con somebody into thinking that they are getting a brand new phone, then can you give me your ebay account name so I can keep well away from anything you sell?

I always think of this feature as specifically there for things like this: you can't try to sell the phone as brand spanking new because the call timers can never be reset & will always tell you if the phone has been used.

it's not for making people think it is new, will it isn't, but it's more something about privacy.

what is so "private" about a timer showing only usage hours? theres no info there showing anything that should be considered private or dangerous... i think you just want to make the phone appear newer than it really is...
either way, only way to do it is to flash a new ROM

Hi. Here's the deal...my elderly parents are travelling this winter in another country. International roaming is expensive, as is international travel, and we're looking for as many ways as we can to save money. One of the ways we've considered to deal with both of these problems is to buy a sim card where they are at, rather than bringing their phone from home and paying outrageous international roaming charges. This is where Hero comes in...I have an unlocked HTC Hero that I could let them use. The problem is, they are intimidated by technology, and having a capable phone with lots of features is overwhelming to them. I was wondering if there's a way I can lock the phone down so it goes to the dialer and nowhere else. No lock screen, no email, no Android market, no text messages sent or received, none of that, just the dialer to make and receive calls. Ideally, I'd like to be able to return it to normal functionality when I get it back, but if this is a one-way thing, that's OK, too. It is currently running Elelinux-7.1-Hero-v3.6-Light.
I apologize profusely if this is a silly question...I'm new at all of this.

It's kind of easy what you want...but not every thing can be erased
1ownload eles ROM
2. Open the archive with WinRar or other app that you use
3. Go to /system/apps and you will find all the app there with the extension .apk
4. Delete what you think that they won't use (but be very careful): for example market.apk (you said that they don't need it)
4. Close the program and you will see that the rom is more lighter
5. Flash the rom
6. Enjoy
For the part with the lock screen i don't think i can help you...

The lock screen part is really the important part. The other apps can still be installed, just abstracted away from my parent's eyes, if they're locked into the dialer. I guess I wasn't clear enough when I described what I was looking for. I want to make it so that the dialer program is the only program accessible to the user...when they press the home button, I want it to go to the dialer rather than to a launcher. When the screen goes off due to inactivity, I want it to go to the dialer right away when any button is pressed rather than showing a lock screen. On iPhone (sorry, it's a platform I'm more familiar with), there's a jailbreak app called IncarcerApp that can do this...is there anything similar for Hero?

Hi there! If you want to get rid of the lock screen what you can do is go into settings on the phone then Cyanogen mod settings then tablet tweaks and in there, there is a tick box or similar that you can press to disable the lock screen!

Thanks for the tip, PP337, but that's still not what I am looking for. I did some Googling last night, and I found a lot of developers refer to what I am looking for as 'Kiosk Mode'. Unfortunately, everything I found on that is in the context of creating a new app, rather than using an existing one.
I'm obviously not making myself clear enough, but I'm not sure how I can phrase it more clearly. I really hope we won't have to go buy a junky SIMlocked Nokia phone that we'll have to throw out in three months when they come home.

i can't understand one think....why is it so hard to unlock a phone??? especially when it's so simple...

Unlocking a phone is indeed simple, for you and I. But for an elderly person, particularly one who is unfamiliar with technology, being confronted with a screen full of app icons can be intimidating. I tried to get my mom to use the Android phone as it is, and she is terrified of breaking something or doing something wrong, to the point where she won't use it for those fears.

I have to say, I hadn't expected it would be this difficult to make this 'open platform' do what I want it to. If it were iPhone, I'd be done by now. Disappointing.

Could you not just remove all the homescreen icons? Can't remember which launcher comes with that ROM, but if you install launcher pro for example, you can remove all the icons even the dock. You can then choose to have just one homescreen and just the dialer icon. Or you could leave it blank to just select the dialer button to make calls. Then disable the lock screen as described above. Would that be ok for them ?

how old are your parents that you say that they "can't unlock" a phone... Both my parents use android on their phones and don't have any problems....
Don't want to be rude or things like that but it's easy on android...

She's 72, and in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He's 70 and has a severe learning disability.
I tried the suggestion someone posted about LauncherPro with only one icon. She accidentally long-pressed an empty space and the menu came up and she didn't know what to do. I was able to tell her what to do because I am here now, but if that had happened when I wasn't around she wouldn't have been able to cope at all, for fear it was dialing some 1-900 number or doing something else she didn't want. I'm shocked that it isn't possible to lock Hero into a single app, but it seems it simply isn't. Thanks anyways for all your help.

Are they traveling alone? That sounds like something you should worry about more then just having a phone for them

You could use adw and lock the desktop by pressing menu and choosing 'lock desktop'. That would prevent any accidental menus popping up. You could also hide the status bar from adw settings and disable the lockscreen from cm tweaks menu. You could also download a dialer widget (https://market.android.com/details?id=dialer.impact) and set that as a widget on a single homescreen and lock the desktop on adw launcher.

I joined this forum a couple days ago. As an intro, I’ve been building and maintaining desktop computers since 1997 for self and family, and my wife’s salon and spa business website with old Frontpage. My main computer is a water-cooled Intel 6600 (I think) go stepping cpu and GTX 8800 vid card, six bay case, 800 watt PSU, dual boot with two removable drive bays, one for main drive and one for game drive, upgraded in 2008 when I was heavy into gaming City of Heroes. Built it for fun. Overclocked and all that jazz. I have a laptop but haven’t gone into it yet.
I got my first smartphone a year ago, Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. With only 8gb of storage It’s useless for as app krazy as I need to be and they are just useful apps like banking, shopping ect, no gaming. I was luving it till I ran out of room even with a 64gb SD card! I found you can’t move very much to the card and I don’t do photos and video much at all so I was very disappointed to say the least. The Samsung rep at Best Buy where I got the phone told me that the local Verizon store should have never put me in the phone to begin with as it’s considered a prepaid. My luck! Some of the sales peeps at the Verizon store are a joke. The dood wanted to wipe my phone until I stopped him. Like that was going to solve something! I was pissed he didn’t know any more than that about the phones he was selling! I went home looking to root the dang thing, hehe. So that’s what brought me here to begin with. I managed to install SKD and did a backup of the phone via Titanium Backup’s site instructions. I bought the pro version but it’s almost useless unless the phone is rooted (sweet app though from what I’ve seen). I found a root for it on this forum but stopped messing with it when I decided to go with the S7. I’d have to have help with the instructions anyway. The posters talked in advanced terms that I didn’t understand so…..
I gave the phone to my wife with Hangouts installed. We moved our landline to Google Voice a year or more ago so with it she can dial using it with wifi. Pretty kewl. There’s lots of Time Warner and Verizon hotspots around so she could use it pretty well where we live. Now trying to wean her off the little flip-phone, hehe. Still have to root it down the road to be useful though.
I went to a Samsung noob class at Best Buy and found that they had the S7 for $100 bucks for a two year contract and thought the 32gb would be plenty with my SD card. Wrong! Even my new S7 has a third of the 32gb space taken up with bloat and what few apps I’ve installed about 4, and I haven’t even installed about 10 or more apps I want. I’ve had it since Apr 1 and I need to root it already, dang! I know, no root available yet. Besides, I want to use the phone for a little longer to make sure it works well while still under warranty.
Now for my noob questions….and I did my homework as best I could. I’ve read all three pages of the threads on this forum looking for answers and can’t find them (I learned lots of other stuff while reading them so thanks guys for that). I’ve looked all over Google search too and just can’t put my finger on the issue.
I want to install apps directly onto my SD card and am looking for a way to do it. I was following a video on YouTube to install apps directly to my SD card via SDB. The video is titled “How to install Android Apps onto SD Card By Default” but the command “adb shell pm set-install-location 2” resulted in a Java error: “java-lang SecurityException: Package Android does not belong to 2000”. (much cussing followed)
Is this really a good, workable method or should I look in another direction? How do you guyz handle this situation?
Off Topic: Anyone using the Ceton 6 channel cablecard and extender system? I’m looking at that to get rid of these two Time Warner DVRs and haven’t quite figured out how to get the signal to older CRT TVs with an Xbox 360 as extender.

Off Topic: Anyone using the Ceton 6 channel cablecard and extender system? I’m looking at that to get rid of these two Time Warner DVRs and haven’t quite figured out how to get the signal to older CRT TVs with an Xbox 360 as extender.

Not to sound foolish, but just covering the bases....Are you aware you can move the apps the SD card from the system itself?
From your settings Select:
Applications > Application Aanager > select the app you downloaded. It'll show you the "Application info".
From there select "Storage", it'll show where it is stored (internal or SD card).
If it can me moved press "Change", then the pop-up comes up with "Change storage location" for "Internal" or "SD card", sounds like you'd want SD card.
It will show an "Export" screen, then you hit "Move" at the bottom.
The "Transfer" screen shows up, when it is done it'll show the the app page info page again listing "Storage" and show where you moved the app too.
That should help free up some space.
If that's not what you're looking for, then you could try the adoptable storage option, where it lets you use part/all of your sdcard for use as actual internal storage...but there's caveats to that...like you won't be able to use the card outside of the device....you really should read up on it before you attempt it for sure.. Though, I'd recommend trying the first suggestion to see if it suits your needs before moving on to this:

I had already tried the first suggestion. I was able to move maybe five apps to SD. I also found a few videos on adoptable storage but the command like location2 didn't work. Some of those guys you can't understand what the heck they're saying, hehe. I'll have to try it again. I also used Debloater and didn't find even one app that I hadn't already disabled in Applications. There were 21 disabled before I did anything, probably by Verizon. Besides, there's not too much bloat on my Verizon. I had disabled nine apps myself so not too bad.
One problem I wish I could solve off topic is the Play Store apps I don't want keep showing up. One is Google Talkback. I can't find the app on my phone anyway and can't find anything on the net to get rid of it or hide it. Any suggestions on this issue? To this point almost half of my system storage is used. All my photos and documents have been sent to SD and then to Google Drive.

probably old news, but thought I'd follow up, just in case....
The Talk back app is there, you just have to toggle system apps, otherwise it won't show.
Check out the screenshots attached....you'll find talkback in "Applications Manager" > "More" (top right) > "Show system apps".
Scroll down and you'll see it. From there, you can press on it and enable/disable at will.
