After seeing the CM9 threads here, I decided to do one for MIUI. I wanted to make a guide for us Epic users who don't know about MIUI which is officially available for us. I will try to keep this post updated and clean as possible.. this is going to be community driven so help make this the most complete MIUI guide here on xdA!

How to use and functions:
The first step: selecting apps
Various apps will greatly enrich your cell phone, so firstly let’s select the apps to your taste. Use the Android Market and download what you would like. If you are using a backup app and restoring apps from a previous ROM, only restore the apps and not the data. Otherwise that will create a lot of force close issues.
How to copy files from the computer to the phone? First connect your phone to your computer via data cable, pull down the notification panel from the top of the phone, click “USB connected”, and then click "Turn on USB storage”.
After copying, do not forget to select the option of “Turn off USB storage”, otherwise "File Manager” in the phone will not be able to find the sd card, as it is being occupied by the computer.
Now I have a lot of apps, how to put them in order?
All apps successfully installed are listed on the desktop, however, they may not be in the order you want, how to put them in order?
Long press an app icon and then you may move it freely. When it is moved to the screen border, the screen will automatically switch to the next screen.
How to add a screen? Use two fingers to pinch on the desktop to enter screen thumbnail mode. Then you may add or delete screens.
How to delete an app? Long press the app icon you want to delete, drag it on top of the trash box and click OK to delete it.
The second step: let's make your phone different.
A phone without style is nothing remarkable, so let’s make your phone different!
Changing wallpaper: Click Menu button on the desktop, select “Change Wallpaper” to replace the wallpaper. In addition to the existing wallpaper in the phone, thousands of pieces of wallpaper are also available online.
Changing theme: Themes make great changes to your interface style. Click “Theme Manager” on the desktop to select the theme you like. Also, more online themes are available online.
Selecting ringtones and more: click “Settings” on the desktop to set call and notification ringtones. In “Personalization” under “Personal” tab, you may find more options.
The third step: it’s time for some advanced techniques!
Adding widgets on the desktop: press the Menu button on the desktop, select "Edit Mode", and then click the icon on the upper right corner to access the interface of “Add Widgets”. Choose your favorite widget on the top, and then drag it to the screen below.
Using folders to manage desktop apps: in the interface of “Add Widgets”, drag [Folder] to the desktop. You may drag multiple apps into folders to classify them. After opening the folder, you may click the edit icon in the upper left corner to rename the folder.
Using toggles panel to improve efficiency: drag the notification panel down from the top, click "Toggles" to go to the toggles panel (It goes to the toggles panel in default of notice.) On the panel are listed the most commonly used toggles, you may click to quickly enable or disable a toggle. Long press on the icon will launch the settings for that icon.
Guest mode: enable the “Guest Mode” toggle in the panel, and your calls and text messages logs will be hidden, and all installed applications cannot be removed. You may have a try when you need to show your phone to guests or children.
Importing contacts or binding accounts: you may use some apps to import a batch of contacts, or bind Google account directly in "Settings"> "Personal"> "Accounts & Sync Settings" to sync contacts at any time.
How to print screens? Press "Menu" key and "Volume Down" key at the same time to print a screen. The printed image is saved in the directory of MIUI in the SD card.
How to copy files from the computer without using the data cable? In case of a Wi-Fi connection, enter “File Manager” on the desktop, select the tab of "Remote Administration" to start the service, and then you will get an address. Enter the given address on the computer, then you may copy files without using a data cable!
Tips/Tricks [updated 2/24] - New tips are at the bottom of this post!
1. Long press on the icon in Toggles to launch the settings for that icon.
When you pull down the notification bar, you will see the Toggle settings for plenty of options (such as WIFI, volume, backlight etc). Long press on any icon in the Toggle mode will launch the setting for that icon.
2. Built-in Screen Capture function
One of the lacking feature in Android is the lack of a built-in screen capture feature (like in iPhone). Not anymore. With MIUI, you can press the “Menu” key and “Volume Down” key at the same time to capture a screenshot. The printed image is saved in the “MIUI: directory in the sd card.
3. Press Home key to preview screens
Pressing the Home button once will bring you back to the Home screen. Pressing the Home button button will show you all the screen thumbnails. You can also ad/remove screens from here.
4. Slide from left to right to quickly delete a message or a call log.
In the SMS or Dialer app, swipe left or right any entry will bring up the Delete mode.
5. Move home screen icon easily
Hold down an icon by one hand to enter Edit Mode, and then use the other hand to slide the screen to move the icon to the target screen.
6. Launch Music Player in lockscreen
In the lockscreen, double tap the time zone to launch the Music Player. (The Music Player is hidden by default, unless a song is playing)
7. Quickly access the Dialer or SMS from the lockscreen
In the lockscreen, hold down the icon of Call or SMS, and you can enter the responding program.
8. Activate the torch from the lockscreen
In the lockscreen, hold down the Home button to enable the torch.
9. Access shortcut menu from contact image
In the Calls, SMS or Contacts app, tap the contact image and a shortcut menus will appear.
10. Running Apps List: Long press on the Home button can go to “Program Manager”. Click the “Clear up” button at the bottom left to clear the extra processes in memory. And the system will inform you of the released memory and current available memory.
Note: System processes will not be cleared so as to ensure the normal running of the system.
11. Switch the Battery UI to show percentage
The default battery UI can be switched to display percentage of left battery capacity. To do so, go to “Settings -> System -> Battery Settings -> Battery Indicator Style -> Percentage“.
12. Long press on the Home button to show History
Like any other Android ROM, long press on the Home button will show the recently used apps. However, in MIUI, there is also an App Killer and App Manager button. Swiping the popup left will show the search form.
13. Setting up IP dialing
If you need to add an IP prefix for a particular number in a strange land, you can set it in Settings -> Common -> Calls Settings. Turn the “Auto IP dialing” ON and set the IP prefix and current area code.
14. Send SMS for rejected calls
When you are not available to answer the phone, you may slide up the panel to reject the call and to send a message to the caller at the same time.
15. Enable 720P to record a video
If your phone comes with a camera that support HD recording, you can enable 720P in the Video mode. Run the Camera app and switch to Video. Select “High” -> “720P” in the pop-up menu of video quality.
16. Quickly uninstall an app
To uninstall an app, simply press and hold the icon until the trash bin show up at the top of the screen. Move the icon to the trash bin to uninstall the app.
17. Quickly read SMS and mark it read
In the lockscreen, press down the SMS button (without dragging it down) to reveal the new incoming message on the lockscreen. Once you have finished reading it, double tap on the SMS button to mark it read.
18. Important SMS: As for those important messages you want to add to your favorites, you may long press the message in the pop-up menu and select "Favorites". You may switch to "Favorites" tab in the main SMS interface to view collected messages.
19. Quick Delete SMS: You may slide from left to right on the item and click on the red "Delete" button when it appears.
20. Backup settings, wifi, themes, apps, data etc.
MIUI comes bundled with some MIUI apps. One includes Backup. This tool allows you to backup app+data, theme, homescreen layout, etc.. This is a very handy tool!!
21. When you hold down home, and bring up your taskmanager, you can long press on the app and it'll bring up extra info!
22. BATTERY SAVING TIP: IF YOU DON'T CARE FOR LED NOTIF., do the following:
a. Press the search button on your phone.
b. Once the miui search box comes up, press menu button on your phone, and hit settings
c. In the searchable items list, turn on "settings" and go back.
d. Search LED. Scroll down till you find LED pulse notif... click that and turn off LED notif. You'll notice decent battery increase!!!
Themes, themes, and more themes!
IMPORTANT TIPS
-Some times when you download themes, the browser changes the .mtz extention to .zip or .txt.. you have to rename it back to .mtz before next step.
-PLACE THEME (.MTZ) FILES ON YOUR SDCARD: /SDCARD/MIUI/THEMES
-You can backup your theme setup, which saves it as a .mtz file in the above directory, and share! --> There is a thread in the Android Theme section for this.. see below.

hey is there a way to join contacts?
One of the best threads in the General area! I LOVE me some MIUI!
What are the improvements of Ics Miui over Gb Miui?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
It includes some holo UI aspects, a better task manager that combines ics task manager and miuis, better browser, really, everything is better. And its getting better than it is now every week. new music app this week.
Idk if it can be implemented on ics at the current state even without source or not. I'll ask the nexus dev. He's been busy though. He's looking into it I think. On gb without source it is not possible though. Great guide by the way

This is a version of the stock MotoACTV system ROM 1.7.12N with several modifications that allow you to use many more android apps.
All userdata is erased when you install this from another ROM, I'm not responsible with what you do with your device.
What works, in no particular order:
- This is already rooted, it doesn't matter what version you come from. I receive a lot of questions about this. Really, the state of your motoactv software doesn't matter. Rooted or not rooted, stock or modified, etc.
- All stock apps and functions work as expected, nothing changes from a stock MotoACTV.
- All google apps I've tried, Market, GMail, Maps, Talk, etc
- Live Wallpapers and widgets stay after reboots.
- LED notifications for Gmail, Email, etc.
- Wifi stays on. Icon shows in status bar when connected. New!
- Accelerometer based games and launcher rotation.
- Enabled settings menus:
* Wireless & Network Settings. Where you can turn on/off wifi, add networks, set advanced parameters, etc
* Application Settings. Where you can uninstall apps, turn on/off ADB, see battery usage, etc
* Accounts & sync settings. Manage accounts for autosync, etc.
* Sound Settings. Choose notifications tone, volume, etc
- Calendar widget and application working.
- Music button is "menu", double-press power button for "home" or choose a launcher.
- Battery percentage modded by ClearD. (thanks!)
- Preferences in most apps are shown black text over white background for easier reading on the MotoACTV.
What doesn't work:
- Search, nowhere. force closes every time. This has never worked.
- Audio input for installed apps. This has never worked.
- Some Bluetooth profiles are not implemented.
- Wifi stays on, but but some times doesn't turn off when you deselect it. turn off/on the MotoACTV if you're in this situation.
- MotoCast setup messes up the Accounts and Sync settings, so Motocast needs to be setup after the google account.
Zeam launcher is preinstalled, but it's not really needed, because you can access all installed applications with the "music" button, you can uninstall it if you prefer. Also you can install another launcher if you like, just be sure to move it to the internal flash from Settings, Application Settings, choose the app and tap the button "move to phone". You'll have to do this for other apps that require to be installed internally, like extra widgets.
Instructions
You can use ClearD's excellent image flasher http://www.cleardroidroms.com/download/click.php?id=103 (be sure to use the "wipe" button) or follow these instructions :
* you need "fastboot" to be installed and working on your computer, here are instructions for windows: http://dottech.org/tipsntricks/2153...ows-computer-for-use-with-your-android-phone/
* Your MotoACTV needs to be fully charged.
Download and extract the zip at the end of this post:
- With the MotoACTV turned off, press and hold "volume down" key and "power" key until the display lights up, release both keys.
- Plug the usb cable to the MotoACTV and the computer.
- Open a command line and change directory to where you extracted the zip file.
- Issue the followings commands in order:
Code:
fastboot -w
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
If you are starting from a previous version of DPRom, you can try to upgrade with the following commands:
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img
fastboot reboot
This is the way to set it up that works for me:
The first boot will take a couple of minutes.
Choose the country, language, press "motoactv setup", choose time zone, set hour, set date, press "next", press "profile setup", set your age, select gender, set height, set weight, set primary activity.
***Don't setup the MotoCast things yet, so press "Later".***
Go to Settings, Wireles & Network Settings, turn on wifi and setup up your network.
Go back to the main screen and press the "Music" button (that's the menu button from now on), choose the TALK application and go trough the google account setup. You'll see your talk contacts appear.
Go back to settings, Accounts & Sync, Manage accounts, press your account and disable the calendar sync.
Go back to settings, application settings, manage applications, All,
at the bottom choose Zeam Launcher and press "move to phone"
Choose also Flit keyboard and press "move to phone"
find Calendar and delete its data.
find Calendar Storage and delete its data.
Go back to settings, Accounts & Sync, Manage accounts, press your account and enable the calendar sync. If you don't use the calendar, leave this unselected to avoid a few ForceCloses.
If you want to add your MotoCast ID, go to Settings, Personal Profile, MotoCast ID. The accounts and Sync setting will force close after you setup the MotoCast ID, I'm still working on this.
Remember that double pressing the power button will let you choose the launcher. Some preinstalled programs need a bit of setup to adapt them to the MotoACTV, be sure to use their preferences menu and explore them. Some examples:
- In flit keyboard, select first keyboard as "Small Querty", second keyboard as "small number"
- In Zeam Launcher, preferences, action bindings, select swype up to "Toggle Full Screen" and swype down as "Expand Notifications". Also in Applications grid, set Columns LandScape completely to the left.
- In SuperUser, press the wrench icon to enter preferences, and set "automatic response" to "allow". Otherwise you can have problems to allow apps to use the su function.
- In Settings, Wireles & Network Settings, press the music button (menu) select avanced and setup the turn off policy to "when display goes off", press menu button again to save this setting.
Thanks to everybody reporting issues, keep them coming!
Enjoy!

Thank you so much for your Beta, but your link has issues. I cannot seem to download your zip file. It reaches 30% and then says it can't read source file on server.
It could be that the zip file is corrupt on google drive.

It downloads fine for me and another person. Anybody else can confirm if it works for them?
Does this have to be installed only as per your instructions, or can it be installed by putting the zip file onto the storage area of the motoactv and use clockwork mod as per the wiki instructions?
Mine works too.

Can only be flashed with fastboot. This is the easiest way.
For now, works well. Good work!!
Un saludo de un Asturiano!!
Noticed issue with SystemUI.apk
Thank you very much for this long anticipated release
I'm quite impressed with the WIFI stability.
But I have noticed that the status bar shows the "No Service" grey rectangle. This makes viewing the status bar notifications difficult. My old rom had a modified SystemUI.apk that removed this grey rectangle allowing easy viewing of notifications. Any possibility of releasing a patch ?
Also, as a result of setting the SD-Card as the default install location, Google Play is not capable of updating Superuser and suspect many other non sd-card apps will face similar issues.
Once again thank you for your great work.

Yes, I'll ask the person who did this (was it ClearD?) about it and release a patch for that.

Unfortunately, I don't know what Motorola changed to do this. At the moment, SuperUser.apk not updating doesn't cause any issue, but I'll keep an eye to see if this becomes a problem.

Yes I believe it was ClearD's patched SystemUI.apk
It would be nice if you guys could coordinate to release the patch.

Sorry so late getting back to the scene, I live in Ohio and we've not had internet for like the last 3 days, or cell service. Or power. Or cable. Or land line phones. Or anything of value for that matter lol . As soon as I can get a stock 1.7.2, I can mod things back to usable state, not a problem. Dproldan, I assume the framework has changed also? And the services.jar? If so, I could probably decompile and mod those back as well.
This is really awesome and I love the setup. Having music launch the app drawer makes the phone so much more usable for me than having to use a separate launcher. One issue that I am running into however is I get some FCs. Specifically gapps and system framework FC from time to time, most often when trying to launch an app.
I am also having problems uninstalling some apks. They uninstall just fine but when I reboot they are back. Do you have some script that runs at start and installs these?
I also have a hard time reading some of the menus because the background is black and the font is gray. Is there a way to change that throughout the whole system?
I added in the SpareParts apk from CM7 and it might be helpful for some other users. With it I can change font size and animation speeds among other things. I also added the AccountsAndSync settings apk to control what syncs with my gmail account. The setting menu works great and shows up with all the other MotoActv settings. After I have everything setup and running smoothly I want to flash the beats audio libs to see if I can improve the audio on this thing.
Thanks again for all the hard work everybody is putting into this.
I put this on my device and I have to say I'm very impressed. The install process wiped like you said it would but it did not wipe my "sdcard" if I had known I would have wiped that in cwm.
Did this process remove CWM from my watch?
Glad you like it. Did you find any problem with what you had in the sdcard?
CWM should still be there, you can reboot to it with "adb reboot recovery" or installing "ROM manager"

CWM should still be there, you can reboot to it with "adb reboot recovery" or installing "ROM manager"

No issues with what was left, I've been reinstalling all my apps and cleaning things up as I go. The only issue I have so far is superuser will not update, says I cannot update it in the current location... My guess is it needs to be moved to internal or something? I haven't really looked into the issue itself yet.
Before I attempt this I wanted to ask a question...
Has anyone experienced any issues?
Do I install this ROM with the same method as before?
Should I return to unrooted stock, update the motoactv to latest version then root and install rom? Or should I skip the device update while its in stock version?
Thanks guys and thanks to the devs who put in the work creating this.

This is a version of the stock MotoACTV system ROM 1.7.2 with several modifications that allow you to use many more android apps.
All userdata is erased when you install this, I'm not responsible with what you do with your device.
What works, in no particular order:
- This is already rooted, it doesn't matter what version you come from.
* you need "fastboot" to be installed and working on your computer, here are instructions for windows: http://dottech.org/tipsntricks/21534/how-to-install-adb-and-fastboot-on-your-windows-computer-for-use-with-your-android-phone/
* Your MotoACTV needs to be fully charged.
Download and extract the zip at the end of this post:
- With the MotoACTV turned off, press and hold "volume down" key and "power" key until the display lights up, release both keys.
- Plug the usb cable the de MotoACTV and the computer.
- Open a command line and change directory to where you extracted the zip file.
- Issue the followings commands in order:
Code:
fastboot -w
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
Go back to settings, application settings, manage applications, All,
at the bottom choose Zeam Launcher and press "move to phone"
find Calendar and delete its data.
find Calendar Storage and delete its data.
Go back to settings, Accounts & Sync, Manage accounts, press your account and enable the calendar sync.
Enjoy!

Can I flash this ROM with clockwork mod? I do not really get along with command line.
Thanks,
Arie.
i just installed the rom i got motocast and some playstore apps, but how do i activate the mass storage? medialink always pop up a message of netwrok problem in motoactv. The rest is working fine.
You CANNOT flash this in CWM you need to follow the fastboot commands. It's very easy and takes less than a minute each line.
I do have a question for the dev though. Once I launch a launcher, adw ex for example I cannot get back into the motoactv launcher without rebooting. I tried to find a shortcut but have been unable to do so. I tried to clear adw launcher defaults but it is not set as the default launcher. I can use Jay's easy script modder to change the buttons back to what I had before but I do like the setup you have for us. Let me know what way you have been doing it.
Also I am getting some force closes, "gapps" whatever that is and some framework errors. Otherwise it's very stable and runs great.

You press the power button twice to replicate the home button. It should also work by pressing start.
The gapps and framework fcs occur whenever enabling wifi and first connecting. I think it has something to do with google/gmail sync but I only have anecdotal evidence of this.
So, my household was 100% chromecast until I plunked down on 2 Fire TV's recently. My wife KEEPS using the chromecast because she cannot be looking all around for the FTV remote when she is feeding our newborn. She always has her phone on her, so she just fires content to the Chromecast. This got me to thinking - how can I can give her the same ease of use with the FTV?
It turns out that this is possible with Tasker and a Tasker Plugin called AutoRemote (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joaomgcd.autoremote&hl=en).
Here is what you need to get this running...
0. A mouse.
1. Root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/general/videos-how-to-root-mod-hack-amazon-fire-t2800683
2. Google Play Store - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53570674&postcount=1
3. Market Helper - http://codekiem.com/2013/02/13/market-helper/ (I set my FTV to spoof a Nexus 7 on T-Mobile)
4. Before you can install Tasker you have to install some missing libraries. I copied the following from my phone (Nexus 5) to the same location on my FTV, then rebooted:
+ /system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
+ /system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
5. Tasker (install from Google Play on your FTV and your phone/tablet)
6. AutoRemote (install from Google Play on your FTV and your phone/tablet)
7. Optional: Droidmote Server (on the FTV) and Droidmote Client on your phone/tablet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videomap.droidmoteserver&hl=en
Now that you have all the pre-reqs in place here's how to put it all together:
1. Launch AutoRemote on the FTV. You will see a QR code on the screen.
2. Launch AutoRemote on your phone. Press the phone icon at the bottom (2nd icon).
3. On the next screen press the QR code at the bottom. Scan the QR code on your FTV to pair the devices.
4. Launch Tasker on the FTV, go to the Profiles tab, click the + at the bottom, click Event.
5. For the Event Category select Plugin, then select "AutoRemote"
6. Click the pencil button to open AutoRemote configuration for this profile. Click Message Filter then enter the name of the app you want to launch. Click OK, then click the "Exact Message" check box.
7. Click the back button twice to get back to the main Tasker window. It will ask you to create a new task to go with this profile. Just click New Task and name it if you want to.
8. Click the + button at the bottom of the Task Edit screen. Select App, then Launch App, then select the app you want to launch.
9. Press back 2 times to get back to the main tasker window.
10. You should see a new entry called "AutoRemote appname (exact)" where "appname" is the text you entered in step 6 above. Underneath that line will be a green arrow and the text "Launch App XXXXXX" and the icon for the app you selected in step 8.
NOW ON YOUR PHONE...
11. Launch Tasker and go to the Tasks tab, and click the + button to create a new task. Name it.
12. Click the + button at the bottom of the next screen, then click Plugin, then select "AutoRemote Message".
13. Click the edit icon next to configuration. AutoRemote will come up. Make sure the Device is set to your FTV. Click message to edit the message you want to send to your FTV.
14. Enter the EXACT text you entered in step 6 above. Click back twice to get back to the Task Edit screen.
15. Optional: Add a new action to launch Droidmote on your phone. Click the plus sign to add a new Action. Then select App, Launch App, select Droidmote Client. Click back once to get back to the task edit screen.
16. Click the grid icon (bottom right corner). Assign an icon to this task. Keep clicking back until you are out of Tasker.
17. Create a new shortcut on your home screen, choose Task Shortcut, then select the Task you just created. I have put shortcuts to all my tasks into an FTV folder on my device.
Repeat steps 4-17 for every app you want to launch from your phone.
Now if you click that shortcut the following will happen...
1. Tasker will send an AutoRemote message saying "netflix" (for example) from your phone to your FTV.
1B. If you did the optional step 15 above then Droidmote will launch on your phone so that you can navigate the FTV interface from your phone.
2. Your FTV will receive that message.
3. Tasker will automatically see the message, and launch Netflix.
4. ???
5. Profit
Hope you guys found this helpful! Let me know if you have any questions. If you have ways to make this better then please chime in! I'm no Tasker expert and just found AutoRemote today, so I am sure there are probably some creative things that can be done that I havent thought of.
Awesome post. I love tasker! Thanks for the guide.

Maybe I did not understand well your post or i don't know your specific need.
But, is not more simple to use only DroidMote Client on your phone to open and control all apps on FireTv ?
DroidMote emulates real input devices in the Android OS. Mouse, keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, touch screen and a gamepad with 16 buttons and 6 axis. So, you should be able to do everything.
My wife, that is not tech friendly, use Droidmote with one hand and without watch the phone to control all my android tv box. Mostly she use the mouse functionality or the Touch Mouse for apps that not support a real mouse and voice dictation to write text.
This is a little example with an old version of what you can do, over time have been added many other features and improvements:

The Quick Start Guide: http://goo.gl/9pTzS
Simplicity is a matter of opinion. As you can see in my post above, I am aware of and use Droidmote as well. However, I think its easier to launch apps this way - especially side loaded apps (I know about FiredTV). Also, this allows for control of the FTV without turning the screen on. For example I have our living room FTV connected to our AV receiver and a projector. If all I want to do is listen to music then I don't want to turn the projector on for that. Now I can just launch Google Play music or Spotify on the FTV from my phone (and load a playlist automatically in the case of Google Play music). Then I can control play/pause, skip tracks etc all from droidmote.
That's just one case where droidmote alone doesn't do the job. There are probably others I can't think of right now.

OK. I was just curious to understand. Thanks for the further explanation.
