Can the T-mobile USA version be used as a wireless router? - HD2 General

If I have a laptop and I am a passenger using it in a car, can I take out the T-mobile USA version of the HD2 and have my laptop connect to it to access the internet (using the phone as a router)?

May be not out of the box but you can always update it with a custom rom and get the option to use it as a router

With this Cab installed it can I believe:
http://bwone.com/downloadsthebowmanpackpro2.zip
Take the cab file in the zip and put it on your phone then install.

you can connect the hd2 to the laptop with the usb cable and choose the built in internet sharing application or share via bluetooth. wifi router is a paid program but also excellent program since it turns the hd2 into a wireless router.

It's sad that they've seem to have taken out the native HTC Wifi Router app that was built into the Euro version of this phone...

Yeah, but you can still install the application file in the USA T-mobile version of the HD2 right?

reclaim wifi router with hard reset?
My Tilt had the native internet sharing option hidden. I received advice from this forum to do a "hard reset" followed immediately on boot up by a soft reset. It was great it took off all the AT&T garbage programs and gave back the Internet Sharing and other at&t blocked tools.
Will that work here on the T-Mobile HD2? And how?

Yes
Download the file in the 3rd post in this thread...unzip it on your desktop...copy the HTC WIFI sharing cab file to your HD2 SD Card...use the file explorer on your hd2 to navigate to the SD card...install...surf

Using the Wifi router cab worked flawlessly last week while I was in Vegas. I was using it with my macbook air and no problems.

so this only works for sharing a wifi connection, or will it work for using the cellular network as well?

When you use the WiFi Router Application, it turns your HD2 into a access point. The HD2, now an access point gets connectivity from your 3G/Edge/GPRS Data Connection and transfers it to the device ( notebook, desktop, etc) you connect to the HD2 Router application.
Simply put, you are using the HD2's data(internet) without having to connect cables.
Hope this helps clear things up for you
Thank you,
Monnie

sweet! this is what I was looking for.. did TMo include this application, or does it need to be installed from a separate source?
anyone try it on a mac yet? how is that set up?
edit: nevermind.. this isn't for "tethering"- it's for using your device as a wifi "hotspot", right? so I just open airport and tell it to connect to the name of my hd2 network connection...

wifi sharing
followed the exactsteps works great ....tried it on my iMAC perfect .....

does this only work for mac or does it also work with windows?

I wanted the wifi tethering as well, but when I installed wifi-sharing cab it kind of wigged out my phone a little. No longer allowing me to use wifi on my phone it was thinking I was trying to launch the app and would not connect to my home router. So now I use the Internet Sharing App that comes with the phone. It is super easy to use with no side effects. All you need is a USB. Just go to start/tools/internet sharing. and bingo!

First, try changing the SSID (network name) on the phone...don't use whatever it defaults to, try "pandanet" or something.
Second, I know there's a couple of cabs floating around for the wifi router thing, the one I have attached here is the only one I got working properly..don't know if this is the same one you used or not.

Wifi Internet Sharing

Hi Guys, My laptop wifi is broken so i'm wondering if it is possible to share my Wing's Wifi to my laptop via USB.
It is. I don't know about a default rom, but you can internet share off your phone's 3g on the rom i use, juststable. I've only figured it out for 3g though, not on a wifi network.
i''m using FingerMe currently but I used JustHome 19 before and I can't figure out how to make it work

You just run the Internet Sharing program included in the ROM, connect via USB, follow the program's directions, and you're off!
(Unless apreincher removed internet sharing...)
It should work with your WiFi connection on your phone, too.
Oh, and, on a WM6.5 ROM, it's called Modem Link.
hmmm.. i still can't make it to work. here's what I want to accomplish
- Connect my Wing to WIFI
- connect wing to laptop via USB
- share the Wing's Wifi connection with laptop
my laptop's wifi is broken so i'm currently looking for alternatives..

Hmm, well you said you are using the Modem Link program from WM6.5, correct???
You can install the original Internet Sharing program, here: http://thewingster.com/internetsharing.aspx
(direct download: http://thewingster.com/Documents/Internet Sharing.CAB)
Maybe that'll work for you, if you aren't using the Internet Sharing version already. And also, I think you're supposed to start the internet sharing, and then connect your USB. Otherwise ActiveSync might interferre.
ace, have you actually done this?
As far as I know, the default Internet Sharing program wont actually share the phone's wifi connection with the host computer.
The solution is to use Internet Connection Sharing Control v0.21, which is a third party application that was created specifically for arranging the data stream however you want. The author touts it as being capable of "Wifi to USB - basically the pda acts as a wireless network card for the PC (neat, eh?)." Looks like it might be a somewhat complicated program to figure out, but it should accomplish whatever he's asking.

The default Internet Sharing program has a connection called WModemLink, which might be WiFi.
I never tried it though, so it's true that the third-party app is probably better.

wi-fi router in hd2 working?

Anybody used the wi-fi router option on the hd2 to connect their pc to internet? I have startet the application and it says running, but no wi-fi router is found on mine or my colleagues computers. I tried the same thing with the wifi hotspot app for iphone, and that worked as a charm.
Just wondering if anyone else has got it working at all?

Mine's an O2 phone that came without the WiFi Router app installed on the ROM. I downloaded and installed Tom Condon's HTC WiFi cab from and it works well. The only thing that I don't have (yet) is the shortcut to the WiFi Router app from the Comm Manager interface.

I heard O2 ripped the wifi app and drivers out of their ROM (not 100% sure). If thats the case you could always flash the Official HTC ROM which will restore wifi, clear a load of horrible O2 branding and add Youtube app Check out this Tutorial on how to do it.
By the way I've use the Wifi app and my Linux and Windows PC/laptops can all detect and connect to the phone. Handy if your out of cable...but unsecure due to WEP.

I had the YouTube app on my O2 ROM. I've now flashed with the latest official HTC ROM and WiFi Router is now fully installed.
I've found that name of Wi-Fi router needs no space !!! so, my computer could found it now...
been using wifi tethering with win7 64bit laptop no probs - nice function to have.
I tried to use, but can't see it neither in a XP nor a Vista!!!
my computer could'nt see it too
I could see and connect but no connectivity to the internet
Assigning IP took about 1 min
I can confirm it works fine for me, on an unbranded device.
It worked for me but only when I switched off my home broadband wifi router.

They may have been using the same channel, which would mean that the stronger signal would drown out the weaker one. I'd expect a home router to have a stronger signal so that would make sense. You can change the channel that your home wifi router uses, if this is an issue for you.

HD2 as wifi signal repeater?

I know this is a very long shot but I can access the internet through my router on my laptop and phone but my desktop can't seem to find it (it is quite old). I was just wondering if I could use my phone as a repeater for the signal?
Thanks

I'd say no chance to... Windows Seven (desktop) installs a software "miniport" which is a virtual wifi pendrive to do exactly that with your desktop. AFAIK there's nothing like it for Windows Mobile, and obviously while you're hooked on your wifi network with your hd2, you cannot use it for another purpose as well

WMWifirouter can do it, it has lots of different modes, including one that effectively turns your phone into an USB wifi adapter, so you can access wifi on your computer with it via usb.

CM Internet Sharing (Mobile Hot Spot) not visible

I use CM_InternetSharing app on my WM mobile phone to create a hot spot. The software works great and all my Windows pc's & my brothers iPad find my cell phone and gain a internet connect but the Elocity A7 does not connect. The Elocity A7 does connect to my home network but it does not find the mobile hot spot.
Note: WiFi Analyzer finds my WM phone but I can't connect - So I guess it has to do something with the WEP encryption between WM & Andriod in obtaining a IP.
My elocity is on build 0127.
Any ideas?
I have to install the adhoc-fix.zip by dexter on to see my hotspot I have a hotspot on my virgin mobile phone . do a search here on the forum for adhoc-fix.zip and it will give you the link. You rename it to update.zip and install like the mods on the a7 but you do not have to clear stuff.

I found the adhoc-fix.zip. Did you apply this using recovery? Ie. rename to update.zip.
I also seen that someone mention to execute a chmod on a file. Do you know how to get keyboard in command prompt mode?

I run the barnicle legacy on my phone to make my hot spot. I have a virgin mobile samsung intercept.
I believe barnicle is for Andriod -- so you are communicating Andriod to Android. My phone is Windows Mobile running XDA CM Internet Sharing. My A7 will not connect to my phone while other PCs (windows) in my home can connect to my phone.
Im in the same boat and I cant get the darn thing to connect when to the XDA-wifi-sharing (adhoc) network on my wm touch pro 2. I wish someone could solve this. I used to be able to dual boot my phone into android 2.2 (rooted) system and set up the hot spot on that and it would connect but that doesnt even work now for A7. I wish someone who really knows this stuff would give it some attention. Ive looked everywhere I find a search query. This is especially annoying since I cant switch to a different phone for at least another six months and I use the phone to get remote access to the internet for all my hardware.
I've got a work around if you are up to it. I starting thinking about a previous user using barnicle. So I ported Andriod to my WM6.5 TP2 CMDA http://sites.google.com/site/androidport/downloads. I launched Andriod from my WM and went to Android Market place and downloaded barnicle. Lauched barnicle and connected my A7. It works. I just have to remember to boot into Andriod when I want to tether.

I have windows mobile phone and barnicle is for android. From reading alot, i guess froyo (android 2.2) has problems with WEP connections. The tethering program i use on windows mobile, xda wifi-sharing, uses wep encryption only. Im wondering if something can be changed within the code to make it open like it is in android tethering program which works fine. I would keep using android on windows mobile phone except has no bluetooth functionality and its freezes up a lot. By the way, ive noticed problems with the a7 dropped from home wep networks ive been on too.

I wish I could help more but I am not familiar with Windows Mobile products.
I have been wondering if I should even fool with encryption on my mobile setup. I figure no one can jump on if its not running. I only use it occassionaly. Is it possible that enough people in a given area could "clog" the connection if I don't limit access with encryption?
wep
I'm assuming you have a key assigned in the WEP setup. Basically WEP is not secure since there are tools readily available to crack the key you use in less than 10min. If you don't broadcast the ssid that would make it more difficult since most people would not see the network readily. You would have to try that to see if you can access with an ssid that is not being broadcast. Some systems have a problem connecting to wireless networks that aren't broadcasting the ssid.
I am connecting to my home net using WPA/WPA2 with no problem. I have not connected to a tethering capability.

I have a TP2 (Sprint) and had the same issues as you do. I was using the XDA wifi sharing app but have found an older version of wmwifirouter that works and doesn't require a wep.
There is one caveat though. Using the app has broke my internet sharing one time causing me to have to clear storage. So, if you check the net for wmwifirouter 0.91 and use that, you should be able to connect after the adhoc fix is flashed on your a7.

Connecting My Phone To The Internet via Computer

Hello,
I am using an X10i. I've been wondering, are there any ways i can connect my phone to the internet using my computer's modem?
I am not trying to connect my computer to the internet by using my phone as a modem. Do not teach me how to do it. My question and that question are two different questions.
Thanks.
If u have a mac u can use its wirless as a hotspot if u connect it with internet cable. I do that for my phone. Hope this helps
Cheers

yeah ,turn your pc into a wifi hotspot..use softwares like virtual wifi router for windows 7
Note:it will work only if u use a cable to connect ur pc and have a jobless wifi in your pc..
you can also connect using bluetooth,i tried once but failed ,didnt tried much,it wasnt worth that much effort!!
pls dont be naive... not every wifi card supports wifi hotspot even with special applications and tools, and the native windows 7 could make only ad-hoc whis is not supported by android 2.1 or 2.2 as I know...I've read many forums and finaly bought wifi router and what I can say its that its really worth to have it...
yeah wifi card also imp..but most modern laptops and PC are quipped with such wifi cards
I can always use my Vaio for wifi hotspots with my X10..never faced any problems!!
It's not possible through USB. It possible with the stock function of win7 or software for your pc. (Only if you got wireless wifi card in it ofcourse)

I wasn't arguing that all cards support it, I was just saying that when it IS compatible with your card, it isn't adhoc.
Try using Connectify on your computer. It is free. If it manages to create the hotspot on your wireless card, your mobile will be able to use the new hotspot connection created. It has worked for at least 3 of my friends and it enables me to share connections on my laptop no matter where I am.
