Google Maps WON'T stay open! - Nexus One General

I have had this problem on my N1 with EVERY ROM I have used from Stock -> Sense -> MCR -> CM -> MCR and now CM Baked Goods. Google Maps REFUSES to stay open. It just closes randomly. It used to be when the signal dropped (ie, using Nav while driving), but now I can have full 3G and it doesn't stay open. No FC, just disappears. The same happens with Shop Savvy when I have low signal. Can anyone help?

i had a similar issue
I know this may sound stupid but do you have advanced task killer running on a scheduale ? The reason i ask is because the same thing happened to me and it kept killing navigation.

Nothing running on a schedule. Regardless, it happens to shop savvy also but only with low signal.

SOLVED: you were close. It was the app startup auditor. I guess it was interferring with the processes and thought it was a boot process or something. Now they both stay open!

Issues with HTC Sense rebooting intermittently ?

Does anyone else have an issue with HTC sense rebooting every so often ? Mine does approximately 1/2 times a day.
It's pretty random.
Are there logs anywhere that I can check to see what may be causing it ?
Are you getting a force close and then reboot, or is sense ui just flat out going back to the HTC screen and then reloading itself? If it's the first then you have some type of file corruption going on.
If it's the second it's possible that you have so many things running and loaded that Android is killing off sense in order to make room for other things. This was a real common issue when touchflo (basically senseui for winmo) got ported to older winmo phones.
Or the other possibility is you are running some type of task killer that is killing off required sense services and it's forcing it to reload.
http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
do you have any taskkiller or auto kill enabled? i had problems when i did
I have to hold my hands up and say I'm using Advanced Task Killer. I guess I'm under the misguided illusion that the snappiness comes from using that.
I'm guessing it's killing some service that HTC Sense relies on, so I'll try and turn it off for a while and see what happens.

on my taskiller i wasnt even killing sense, i was killing mail (then sense reboots)
I've been getting random phone restarts too in the last week. I do have Advanced Task Manager and TasKiller, but I never had this problem until recently. I usually only kill stuff I would have manually opened. I think I hear an alert on my phone and it's just restarting.
I usually get this when I stop peep.
Swype?
Seems like it might be swype. Anyone?
another one here that has the same problem since the beginning. The problem basically is that HOS only has about 200 MB of free RAM after booting, and this is too few. Then, when you open some big apps or games, the system closes sense to make space for tha app, then when you return to the home screen, sense reloads itself..... It is normal, it is not a malfunction, but I guess they should solve it, it is quite anoying to be waiting several seconds for the sense to reload until you can go on using the phone, at least it is anoying in this so high class phone....
I think there is some tweak or mod over there that modifies the behavior of android so it won´t close sense and it won´t reload anymore, but you have to be root to do it.
Best regards.

phone randomly reboot / force close

I picked my Nexus S up this am as the store opened at 9am. I powered it on and away it went it had all of my apps dl in minutes.I had to go into work so I just let it charge on my car charger. Got to work and went to start Cardio trainer ( which is an app I use daily for about 3-5 hours per day) it immediately force closed. Force closes each time I try and use it. So i sent message to dev. The next thing I know I get a message saying that Beautiful Widgets geolocation is getting false reading from the GPS and it force closes. The GPS has been spotty. When first initiated it took over 10 minutes to get a lock. Turned it off and tried again and it took 7 minutes. The third time it was about 15 seconds and since then it alternates back and forth from almost instant to minutes again. What concerns me is that the accuracy just bounces back and forth from 32.6 ft to 16.3 ft and anywhere in between and really never stabilizes. This may be normal for this type GPS systems(I don't know) Also I have the old market and cannot find a link for the new market.Wasn't Gingerbread suppose to come with the new market? So far I am impressed with the smoothness of the system but not with the GPS. Also the lInpack scores are lower than on the Vibrant. Appears to be very solid. Anyone else have any of these problems?

It sounds like a GPS problem with your device, Just get it swapped mate
JD
I've only had FCs using the new google maps so far.
Random FC for me in maps, market and gallery :-/
ive yet to experience a FC
Cardio trainer is not working for me either, I am wondering if the dev's need to update it for 2.3, I also can't get vlingo to work.

I don't think it's a gps thing, I can't even get into cardio without it FC, my GPS locks without a problem.
phone randomly goes to boot animation screen
Ok, so it appears something is wrong with my phone. Every once in a while, i'll look down on my phone or in the middle of doing something, and it will go to the boot animation screen. Most of the time, the boot animation screen is dimmer than on normal start up. It will eventually go back to the ui, which I will then have to restart my phone because it won't connect to wifi or 3g.
Anyone else had this problem? Think it's worthy of getting a replacement from bestbuy or a glitch that should be fixed with an ota?
I haven't seen anything like this yet, though I suppose I don't keep my eye on my phone constantly, so I suppose it could have happened while I wasn't looking. No WiFi or 3G problems, either.
Sounds like you've got a serious issue there if you're seeing it a lot, though. I would get it replaced. Unless you're running a third-party ROM or some other non-stock mod, in which case dump it first and see if the problem is being caused by that.
Yea I had this happen twice. At gym was changing a track with Bluetooth headphones and went to dimmer bootscreen had to pull battery. And another time I had to reapply all my Widgets on my homescreen. I'm on CM7 rom

Are you using a custom ROM/kernel/SetCPU? Those problems sound like the ones the D1 has when it's clocked past a stable speed.

I'd look at the software you've added since the phone was purchased as the first primary suspect. Weird widgets, background services, live wallpapers, background syncing app, something like that...
You'd want to wipe/reset the phone before a return anyways, so why not do a factory wipe/reset from the settings/privacy menu, then start off with a fresh phone (software wise)? Be conservative in what apps you install at first, and check for stability; then slowly add back the stuff you'd have one by one and see which app from the Market causes the glitch.
I think that's a bit more fair to Samsung, Best Buy, and whoever ends up with the device as a refurb, than returning what is probably not bad hardware to the store.

Hmmm...and you don't think the fact that you're using ALPHA level firmware that is known to have some bugs in it, might be your problem?
I'd expect that kind of thing with CM as long as it's alpha, and even beta. I wouldn't be surprised with it even on the RC versions. It's experimental until Team Douche releases an actual ready-for-prime-time version.

Nope, I'm not even rooted. I am however running ADW ex launcher. As far as widgets, the only widget i have running is the weather/news that came stock on the phone. As far as apps, I really don't have anything crazy downloaded or running.

I've been running ADW.Launcher without problems up to now. I just upgraded to ADWLauncher EX last night; I'll post here again if I start seeing this issue.
this is similar to the other topic.
Random Reboots, we call it on the SGS (samsung galaxy s) side
hoping for the best, it is not the same deadly problem we found on some of the 16GB SGS phones, that eventually lead to the corruption / destruction of the internal SD
but those were the signs.
so i'm really hoping that is not the same problem, else i'll really be pissed with Samsung to produce yet another crappy phone with cheap internal parts.
it should not be, as i saw pictures of the innards of the SNS (samsung nexus s) and it was clearly showing SandDisk for the 16GB internal SD
Random Reboots
A couple of times I've had the Nexus S reboot, once when I was in the middle of a call and once again as I was messing around with the settings.
I'm running 2.3.1, th latest build GRH78, does anyone have an idea as to why the random reboots are occurring?
Thanks in advance for your help

My phone seems to be possessed - apps from hell!

Hey guys - I am having a problem with my phone, and I am hoping someone can help? (Running stock/no-root, w/2.3.4)
A few weeks prior to the 2.3.4 release (while on 2.3.3), I noticed that an app called Bump was constantly running in the background (even though I had never launched the app before), and I'd have to constantly go in and manually kill it.
*Also I should note, Google Maps was another constant running app, that I would have to manually kill along with the Bump app.
This got tiresome, and since I wasn't using Bump anyway, I went ahead and uninstalled it. I figured that a recent update to the app/Bump, was the cause. After removing the Bump app, the problem went away (as well as the Google Maps stopped running in the background too - odd I know).
Anyway, the problem is back, but much worse this time - as this past couple of days, my phone is now running a bunch of apps in the background out of the blue!
1) Tango
2) To Market Lite
3) Google Market (even though I have Accounts & Sync/Background Data turned off)
4) Google Music
5) YouTube
6) Photaf
*Note: I have not launched any of the apps listed above in awhile, except for Google Market, which I turn on Background Data for this, and then turn off when I am done.
I have since removed Tango, but it hasn't solved the problem. It seems to happen the most when I turn my phone on (after I reboot, or if I charge over night with the phone turned off), but also will happen when phone is on during the day - with no reboot.
Anyone have an idea what's causing this, or how to fix it? TIA!
The best way to fix this is to stop worrying about it.
Apps do sometimes run in the background or have services waiting for some events to happen - it actuially HELPS battery life and performance and barely consumes any CPU cycles until something happens that triggers the app.
Killing them will drain your battery and make you crazy, more than letting the apps work as designed will.

Thank you for the feedback. I just found it odd that this just started happening, especially since some of the apps running were apps I haven't launched in ages (or ever used).
Also (and I forgot to mention in my post above), that a couple of the apps were running so hardcore - that it set off the alarm in Watchdog, as an app draining my battery and memory - telling me to kill it. So idk what to think, other than I find this behavior a bit odd.
Many of them are set to run based on conditions, like bootup, wifi on, widget added, etc. If you hate it, download autostarts from the market.

Unused Google Maps still eats my battery?

Hi Folks
I did search for this before posting..
I have a SGS andriod v.2.3.3. My phone is set up:
Using Stock samsung SMS, MMS and dialer interfaces.
GPS and WiFi Off (except when i need Wifi)
Background data and auto-sync OFF
Latitude Signed Out.
Yet for some reason Google Maps is always running, even if I force kill it, it still reboots after about 2 mins and its using 45% of my battery resources. My battery only lasts about 36 hours of casual light use and is on standby when im in bed.
I have been thinking of turning off "Use WIreless Networks", but do i need to?.
I dont use Google Maps, as i dont drive and dont really travel many places beyond work or friends. I very rarely if every use Pyont or latitude.
I do love this phone and I know Google like to know where and who you are, but is there any way of dumping or swtiching off google Maps and maybe switching to better Mapping, because even though i dont use GPS today, Im not saying I never will.
Many Thanks
Night
very strange. its not normal for google maps to do that. maybe you should try a new rom like jvq.
you can get rid of google maps entirely if you have root, just delete it from the system/apps folder. but i don't really reommend this. Im sure there must be another way to fix ur problem.
Ya i had the same problem since i last updated maps. Uninstalling the update did the trick
Download the Autostarts app. It can kill and app from staring up in various states, like just afer start up, switching connectivity (like wifi to 3G) and many others. You'd be surprised at what's running on your phone and when it starts up.
Many thanks for both replies...
Ill remove the update and report back., but give me a few days though .
There are many threads all over the web about this Google Maps problem, but ill have a look at the ROMs Thanks.
I did buy this phone pre-owned and just replaced the battery (official Samsung 1500mah one), but its still drinking it.
My HTC Wildfire got 5 days out of its battery with the settings above, to be fair, now that SamsungApps are buying up android apps such as Angry birds, accuweather & clock, Sms widgets & news.. I wonder if I need android at all.
A few questions..
Do I need "Use Wireless Networks" switched on for the phone itself. I have read of folk using GPS ON instead.
I do realise that google android powers the phone so dumping their maps may affect the phone & sms itself, but Is there an alternative to Google Maps, which whern active might deactivate theirs.
Thanks
Night
Thanks Devenblue4u.... sorry, you were typing as I was replying.. hehe. Will definetly try this because ReChild App Killer isnt that good.
Night
Ok, Ran a few battery tests and using the settings in my OP, I also turned off "Use Wireless Networks" and got the Battery to 3days, 17hours, which is good.
I did try the Autostarts app as well, but it kept locking uyp and resetting my phone.
I uninstalled Googles update, but that didnt help.
TO test I.. Force stop all the 3 instances of google Maps > Clear maps Cache > Turn off Wireless Networks, and this seems to stop Maps from searching my position.
Although this solves my battery issue, which is great.. It does just become a Samsung Wave, which means, I have to turn it all back on again to do any of the Galaxys good stuff, which makes me wonder if im not crippling my phone.
Any thoughts from anyone would be great
Cheers
Night
As suggested m8, flash another rom, look for something that has good reports in the thread comments, jvq as mentioned.
NightOrchid, there's nothing wrong with your phone. It's a bug in Google Maps since 5.4.0. If you check the user reviews on Android Market, you'll see that many people have the same problem. Mine also uses a chunk of the battery when I don't even use it. The phone reports that it keeps using the GPS with Latitude turned off. I have to force-stop it twice after restarting the phone.
Uncheck the network location and kill the Map's Network Location Service from running apps.
This worked for me on JVQ, Maps 5.7 (modded version for world navigation)
Try Autorun Manager if Autostarts failed. In Advanced mode, you can search for Maps and disable event triggers like startup, application removed, replaced and installed. And if it's running as service, don't kill it by task killer, use the built-in one, just force stop and you'll be okay.

Verizon GS5 rooted running very slow

I have a rooted GS5 on verizon running 5.0 and it's very slow. Its seems that the task manager isn't doing much, when i have a lot of apps open, the phone is almost unusable. Sometimes when I'm navigating using google maps, the navigation will just quit with no notice, same with google music.
if i open the task manager and "close all" the phone will run quicker for a bit, but then it just slows down again. it's very frustrating.
Something that has just started to happen is the screen will come on after i sleep the phone. I have no idea what is causing it, but the screen will just come on for apparently no reason. I have recently reset the phone to factory (when i rooted for 5.0).
Are there any apps that will tell me what is causing the slow down? a task manager that will track CPU/ram usage? and is there an app that will tell me what is causing the screen to come on? I'm about to do a factory reset and not root cuz the phone is unusable.
Thanks.

Unless you have a custom rom/kernel root will not affect battery.
There are many battery statistics apps on play store, i would personally recommend GSAM Battery Monitor.
Battery isn't really the issue. The phone just gets Bogged down easily.
