Morning XDA,
I've been using Opera a fair bit in bed (my gf is very easy going...) and have found the 4 way rotation feature quite annoying, as I lay on my side and hold the phone at an angle. This means that the screen is constantly switching back and forth between landscape, portrait and upside down.
What can I do to disable or limit the screen rotation? I'd ideally like just regular portrait/landscape, or even better a manual way to switch between the two.
Many thanks in advance!

My friends can't get enough of this krups' app and I have had it on my touch pro (girlfriend's now) though it would crash from time to time, but haven't had a problem since move to imagio. And I was answering another post and I thought about how great it is. Screen rotation is smooth and fast and no accidents.
My functions:
Side to side (both ways): toggle between portrait and landscape
back to front: brings up dialpad
front to back: minimizes open windows
down to up: turn off screen
I would imagine it does take some battery life, however, I haven't noticed any real difference I'm still just amazed how well the battery on the imagio is. It makes it from wake up till bed time and then some, and I'm a heavy user. I will post my settings later that work great. Enjoy!
Hello everyone.
I just got my X10 over the weekend and have started to play around with it. One thing I have noticed is that the screen will only rotate to landscape on one side (with the home buttons on the right in landscape mode). I've checked various videos on the net and they all seem to rotate in this direction, but don't show it going the other way. I checked my wife's Iphone and it rotates both ways. Can anyone let me know if this is an issue with the X10 in general, or just my phone. TIA.
Confirmed. the device only rotates on the left side. But i never thought about it before

Is there any reason why this would be a problem? must say I've not come across any occasion where I've thought that would be required.

It only rotates to the left, yeah. But I think it's great since I'm seriously annoyed with screen rotation at times. This way I can lie in my bed and write texts in portrait-mode with my phone on the side so to speak. And I don't want to turn it off completely since I use it when I look at pictures and browse the web. I just wish there was a way to disable screen rotation for different applications.
I believe this is the same for all droid phones. My buds Moto-DROID does the same thing and I do recal only being able to tilt the N1 in the same direction. On the DROID it makes sense to me, the physical keyboard only goes one way. However, my bud is left handed and he instinctively wanted to turn my x10 to the right so the hardware buttons are on the left and he coudltn. He immediately did not like the phone.
Thanks all,
this isn't really a problem for me, I just thought it was strange since I didn't really see a reason for it. This is my first Android phone, so I'm still getting used to the benefits and quirks of the system, and just thought it was odd. Well lets hope that we get an update to 2.1/2.2 or are able to root the heck out of this thing soon.
Cheers
The N1 use to do this too but in 2.2 it gained the ability to be rotated into landscape either way.
I reckon 1 way landscape rotation is the best thing ever... esp. with the reading lying down thing... I used to have to hold my Diamond on a weird 45 degree angle in those situations...
I bet you can think of a million reasons why it's great it only rotates one way, but I bet you'd struggle finding a decent reason why you'd need it to rotate both:
I have a problem and can only rotate my phone clockwise, this means I have to rotate it 270 degrees instead of 90, just to get it into landscape
I prefer to press the camera button with my thumb holding underneath the phone. Now I have to do it with my index finger like a normal person
I'm lefthanded - everything works backwards for me.
Anyone else finding the Focus screen orientation not reorienting from Portrait to Landscape in various places (IE, e-mail etc)?
Yes, but if you notice in the instruction manual it says not all screens have landscape.
Some of the reviews of the LG qwerty phone indicate this too, making typing on a sqwerty a sideways proposition.
I would expect more landscape rolled out in updates, but then again I am a douche.
Seems more responsive today, maybe the SD card affected more than memory.
The Focus is sluggish when changing orientation. I compared a Focus and a Surround side by side, and the Surround flips to landscape and back faster every time.
Since I went ahead and bought the Focus anyway, I really hope Samsung tweaks this in time for the next update.
Rotating slow on Focus too
Has anyone tried to hard reset to see if it gets better?

Where it is sluggish? I don't feel any slugginess in mine
Mine does it occasionally too. I wouldn't say it's sluggish.. It's quite fast when it *does* rotate. Just sometimes when the screen rotates to say..landscape.. then I want to switch back to portrait..the screen wont rotate.. and i have to shake the phone a bit for it to work again. Doesnt happen always but it happens enough that you notice it.
After purchasing a Nexus 7 and fairly satisfied with it, I decided to purchase a Nexus 10 from Walmart since I want a bigger monitor estate and this 7 inches tablet start to get annoying when I read books on it. When I first used it, it was an awesome experience but then it goes downhill as soon as I upgraded it to 4.2.2.
One of the main reason why I want to get rid of my nexus 7 is because the screen keeps flickering if I am in a dark room and guess what kind of problem I have with the nexus 10? It is the auto brightness!!! If I understand this device correctly, the sensor is on the right hand side beside the camera (portrait mode, volume button on the right) and I am right handed. So now whenever I type something, I think I accidentally cover the sensor and the auto brightness kicks in and once I am done typing or lift up my hand, then the auto brightness kicks in again. It really annoys the hell out of me and please don't tell me the solution is to turn off the auto brightness. I mean the auto brightness option is there for a reason.
Does anyone have the same problem?

That is just the way you are typing, I guess.. If you don't want to Change the way you type (sensor would be more than half way up the screen, keyboard is only 1/3)..why not try another keyboard in landscape mode? I am using swiftkey 3 for tablet, split keyboard across both halves of the screen and like it much better than full keyboard in portrait mode.
Change they way you use it or turn off the sensor would be the only options. Rotate it to other positions and try not to activate it is the only other option.(you can use it with sensors/switches anywhere.. If you are just holding it with your left, then rotate switches into your left... Fix the problem with your right activating the sensor.)
Thank you for the respond. I would have thought it is due to design issue. I mean why they put the sensor on the right. There must be someone else is having this issue but then I don't see any posts about it so it must be the user.
Today is the 2nd day only so maybe I can change the way how I type or browse (I also notice the auto brightness issue when I browse online). I don't have this issue with other brand tablet though.

Yesterday, I learned about the "peek" gesture where you reach your hand near the phone and the screen lights up with some basic information. I'm having a little bit of trouble with the gesture and wondering if someone can describe the exact gesture needed.
Also, does the gesture ONLY work if the phone is laying flat? I'd like to have it work while the phone is in a cradle.
I'm not exactly sure how it's set up. But it seems to only work when laying flat. IMO the gestures are more annoying than anything. I turned my off cause it always wanted to change my web pages on the browser.

Definitely, some are annoying, but I really like this one. If it can only work when lying flat, that really sucks.
