What happened to the MSL thread? - Hero CDMA General

It says 'moved' and when I try and get in I'm getting an 'insufficient access' message. What gives?

I am gonna guess that it's locked because someone made a CDMA Workshop tutorial.. lol

That's somewhat lame. I guess it's proprietary though, so it makes sense.

Some of the stuff posted is probably considered warez. But I am surprised they didn't just delete that post.
I am guessing they deleted the whole thread because they don't want us talking about MSL stuff. Why? ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, it is not illegal but you can do illegal stuff in there. So, this board will remove any talk about this stuff because they fear being shut down at any moment. I can't blame them. There have been plenty of boards shut down in the past.

MSL Stuff is not illegal...
The MSL is essential for many things on the system side of phone software...
It was one method of finding it that is considered illegal..

I wouldn't say they removed it because of the MSL, they removed it because of the Warez and other links on the page, i mean it's quite easy to get your msl from Sprint, PM me and i'll give you a free easy way to get it from Sprint.

I got my MSL. Changed slot index to 0 and tada, 1.5 rings and it rings my phone. Perfect.

Sure is illegal. You can change your ESN which is illegal.

It is not illegal to have your MSL. Yes changing your ESN is counter to FCC regulations, although strictly speaking I'm not sure it's 'illegal'.
In any event, simply having your MSL is perfectly legal. This is the only time I've ever had problems getting mine from Sprint, and that's because they've apparently had a policy change over it (likely from too many people destroying their phones with it).

I noticed a few times, my girlfriend called me on speaker, it rang about 4-5 times before I got a ring on my Hero.

You have to have the MSL to even program the phone... It is not illegal..
The MSL is not the culprit..
The illegal things are done *by people* with the MSL not because of the MSL..
That's like saying money is illegal because people do illegal things with money...
Changing the ESN is illegal, not having the MSL....

Moto Droid OR htc Droid on sprint

Has anyone heard of or know if it's possible to use a verzion phone like the moto droid of the htc increbile on sprint??
i dont think it will work. i believe sprint has some policy that prevents phones that arent sold from sprint get activated. dont know if its true, i heard about it long ago.
damn both of them are going for 200 around me and was thinking it might be a cool experiment lol oh well
well im not a 100% sure on that. like i said i heard it long ago. might want to ask around and see what everybody elese says. or in any case, just call sprint and see what they have to say

ok so heres some possibles(will be updating)
http://www.the-answerman.com/sidlist/prl/index.asp
ok this is some info on prls about alltel
Looks like Alltel is pushing new PRLs:
20029 - Non-EVDO phones
30029 - EVDO phones and smartphones (Not Treo's)
40029 - Aircards and Treo's
ok so it looks like version should use the 30029 prl from that first post
so after reading i found that version will work with the alltel prl because they do use the same towers so it should work
thats as close as i think were gonna get though i dont think we will be able to pay sprint for it

Back when I was using Windows Mobile phones, I used different carriers phones on sprint and alltel. I had to do some edits in epst, and had to load the corrrect pri and prl onto the phone. I'm not saying you'll for sure be able to do it, but I'm sure it's possible. If you happen to get one and wanna try some stuff, pm me. No guarantees though
It's true. If it is not one of their phones, they won't activate it...even though a Verizon phone will work just fine on Sprint.

Perhaps if you clone a ESN Serial you could activate it over the phone,
Never minding it's ilegal, you'd just need to know what to really push to it to make it work alright
well my sister has a Sony Ericsson and she uses it with sprint... although pretty sure that is through a sim card.. and it is a gsm phone.. not sure if that helps...
^not a chance cdma and gsm are not even close to being compatable with eachother.
There's R-UIM in China (A CDMA SIM card), at least back in '02. Not sure if it's spread anywhere else yet?

Spoofed phone, and replies...

Been using Google voice (not religiously due to family not the most tech savvy). This morning, I wake up, and I find a total of 8 messages from starting from 10:30 at night, to 07:59 this AM. There are a total of 3 reply backs, all having personal information attached to them).
Researching the number back shows an area code of 734 (Ann Arbor), which is ironically the prefix I chose since I previously worked there at U of M.
The really interesting part is that I have a bit of a "stalker" at work, whose number I've blacklisted courtesy of Verizon wireless, and have not had any issues in say 1.5 months. 2 nights ago while at work she asked about setting up a google voice account after just purchasing a Samsung S, stating "I don't have any clue how to set this up". Was a bit busy at the time (patient going bad, honestly didn't really care", and opened up the app and told her to browse through it to get an idea.
How can I track this number (really think it's her) and verify it. I have a harassment case pending in HR regarding her, and would like to have it as material to provide it it really is her. Second, how the hell can my phone respond back? I have "Unknown sources" checked as I use Ti backup.
Any help more than appreciated. Thanks in advance!
LOL Holy christ no. One of the "you can take the girl from the trailer...." She's done this before to others at work, with the last moving to Canada (I **** you not) with his wife and 2 daughters. Been getting worse, hence my interaction with my manager and HR.
google voice also can use your email to reply back to texts..is your email compromised? Change your passwords..and do a hard reset..if you are using TI..just wipe and reinstall ROM...
It's hard to say what/if she did something...but yeah, thats weird.
edit: I live in Ann Arbor, but I wasn't the one...haha.
pretend how u have this treasure in nigeria, and ask her to "help" you bring it here.
Christ, I never thought of that, and I do have that option checked.
Sigh... I just did a complete backup 8 days ago, only difference is 2 games, and I can re-download those.
Google voice already uninstalled. After that I'm going to get number changed, and see if I can get it "unlisted" by Verizon.
What else, any other suggestions are more than welcome and appreciated!
Added question.

do a reverse number lookup and google voice numbers are listed as grandcentral in their service provider. that will tell u at the very least that its a GV number.
Well, after logging into Google voice, somehow her number (which is and has been blocked by Verizon) is listed as a secondary phone, receive text messages on this phone has been checked, PIN not required checked, and never ring. Multiple sign-in is enabled as well.
Just outstanding. Changed email to some bs address. Will verify and forget, as has password to something ridiculous. Any other suggestions?

Document everything that has happened, as thoroughly as possible. Get whatever confirmation you can from Google that shows that your account was somehow compromised.
This chica sounds like she is serious business and doesn't mind playing these games long term. If she compromised your communications you can be sure that it was not just some isolated fun. She most likely mined your account for whatever info she could, and it's possible that she sent things 'on your behalf' that she can later use to accuse you of something.
Change all of your passwords immediately: banking, paypal, email, etc. If she was able to compromise one, it's likely she got into another.
It sounds like worrying about Google Voice or your phone is the least of your concerns: the symptom rather than the disease.
Seriously consider retaining a lawyer for whatever may come of all this insanity.
Maybe it sounds like I'm overreacting but I've seen the havoc that can come from such a situation and from your description, this sounds like it could go all sorts of awful ways.
I dunno... I think you like her.
i think you should talk to the police about this... not XDA... or maybe springer... he always gets the truth out

This is so much BS. if you were really bothered by this person why do you talk to her? why do you bother with her? I think you are her stalker, thats more believable.
I have been stalked by a chick. Its creepy. You get stalked when they're fat and scary looking. So it is possible.

Aside from just simply changing your passwords, change your security questions to the accounts as well.
Document everything and hand it over to HR

If you're rooted you can just download the msl app from the market. That's what I did. And actually I don't remember if u have to be rooted or not.

why is sprint so hesitant on giving us the MSL code? what damage can we do with it?
i was going to to try reseting the data profile and see if there is improvement in 3G speeds, but they try to avoid the subject when you ask for it
edit: yay for temp root just used MSL reader :-D
edit 2: so they wouldn't give up the MSL code but he waived the $18 activation fee :-D
Best Buy routinely prints MSL on documentation
The Best Buy printout lists a security lock code, which is your MSL.

lol 7 phone calls? i used msl reader while i was on the phone with them the first time, they said no so i fired up the market and installed MSL reader.
I don't think they've ever flat out refused to give me my phone's number. I've never activated a new phone on the phone, always in person. I think it's easier to say no on the phone than it is in person. I've had some couple of times where the employee seemed leery to give it to me. I might have said that there's many ways to get it, I just figured since you're activating the phone now that you already know the msl. I generally tell them if they are hesitant that it's something I like to keep in my records. For the most part, nobody has flat out refused yet. Is it possible they see how long I've been a customer with them so they just tell me what it is?

I've never had a problem getting my MSL from a sprint rep. I've always just said "I need my MSL to program my phone". No questions, no hassle, they've always just given it to me and asked if they could help with anything else.
I asked for both mine and my wife's when I activated our phones. The woman had to go ask her supervisor since she said they aren't suppose to give them out. She said he approved it and gave me the numbers.
This is my first smart phone so not even sure if I will ever need it but saw a post in another forum about a hard data reset using the number so figured I would try to get it just in case it comes in handy if/when I get into rooting my phone.

Just bought an EPIC 4G (Sprint said was CLEAR, now NOT CLEAR?)

So long story short, bought a NEW EPIC 4G from someone after being on the phone with SPRINT and verifying the ESN was "CLEAN & CLEAR" for activation. 5 minutes later I call Sprint back to swap the phone onto my account and was told "The phone is currently active on an account". Ok WTF is up with that? Anyone had a similar experience? I have tried to search for ways to get in and change the MSID and phone number but I have had no luck. The MSID & Phone Number show up as 000-000-0508 if that isnt weird enough.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any way to get in and change the MSID to mine? Any way to repair this ESN?
Thanks for any and all help, this isn't a stolen phone, fresh out the box, as told it was good and now being told it was bad. I wish Sprint would hold themselves accountable for their screw ups.
Mike
The signs that tell me it has never been active as far as my knowledge is:
Phone number:
000-000-0508
MSID:
000-000-0508
Username:
<Not set>
Im 100% sure if it has been used before that this info would be filled in no matter how many times you reset it.
There isn't anything that can be done about the ESN.
Try contacting whoever you purchased it from to make sure they put a different phone on the line, it won't be usable until it is removed from whatever line it was attached.
I understand all of that, my phone is a Sprint rep told me the phone was good, few minutes later it was no longer good. The phone number, msid, username do not make any sense at all. It was brand new out of the box, never been activated before.

It had to have been activated at some point for the ESN to be attached to a line.
Thats the point, either sprint screwed up somewhere but I have no clue. Do you have information on changing the MSID? This is not my first rodeo at buying or even rooting phones (not that I have even attempted to root this thing) but I have never had an issue with what I was told from sprint and now I feel I can no longer trust what sprint even says.

The phone would reflect the last used phone number as well as last username.
The phone keeps trying to complete hands free activation as well.
I don't have an explanation as to how it became activated on a line, I can only say that until it is removed from that line it will not be usable with Sprint. All I can recommend is that you contact whoever you bought it from and try to sort this mess out.
The phone has never been activated. Sprint zone says "This Device is not currently active on a Sprint Account"

I think the OP bought it from a person rather than a store.
to the OP: Make sure the MEID under the battery matches what's on the box AND go to menu > settings > about phne and make sure THAT MEID matches the other 2 if it doesn't, then it's likely it was tampered with or changed for some reason...

[Q] Fired employee pattern locked his phone, need the data

We fired an employee yesterday, and when he returned his phone we discovered that it is pattern-locked. I need to get around the lock to see if he has any important company data stored on his phone...
Is there any way to do this on the Shift?
Factory wipe would get rid of anything on his phone, try sliding the keyboard open to wake the phone, I know sometimes that got around the pattern lock back on my moment, never used the pattern lock on this phone, sorry.

Well first off, any important data would be stored on the SD card.
Doing a factory wipe would wipe what is on the phone, not the SD card. Nothing would really be on the phone though unless you want to dig around in his text messages.
Actually, I DO want to dig around in his text messages. I work for an IT consulting firm, and I need to know if he was communicating to clients via text.

You might have to contact Sprint for a record of those. I don't know of any way to get around the pattern lock.
If he enabled USB debugging, you will be able to get at a lot of stuff with adb... including the text message database.

Just call the guy you fired and ask him for the password. Sounds to me like the simple and adult solution. Who cares if his feeling are hurt or it will be awkward, its like turning in the office keys when you leave.

Not really, information technology != software security
That's like saying it's ironic that a mechanical engineer can't make his own electronic circuit board

No, it actually is ironic and also hilarious.
It's more like a mechanic that doesn't know how to rebuild a transmission.

edit: Then again, it's not a bad question, but you have to admit it's a bit ironic.

Just call the guy you fired and ask him for the password. Sounds to me like the simple and adult solution. Who cares if his feeling are hurt or it will be awkward, its like turning in the office keys when you leave.

Actually, judging how many combinations you can do with the pattern lock, it would take a quite while to figure out the right combination since there's literally thousands of doable combinations that have to be done manually (afaik) not automated by a script. It isn't ironic at all. Why waste the time? I wouldn't want to bang my head against a wall when the solution is a simple phone call away. And I've been doing IT as long as you have.

I wasn't talking about the validity of the question at all. It's a great question.. since nobody seems to know the answer I would just suggest taking out the battery and seeing if you can boot into recovery and mounting it via USB if USB debugging is enabled and/or messing with ADB on the phone..
Also, why is this company giving their employees Android phones and not Blackberries? Blackberries can be controlled via BES. Maybe it's just a husband trying to hack his wife's phone?

My last job was using Droid Incredibles. Android phones can be controlled via Exchange ActiveSync security policies. I personally did it at my last job to **** with this guy that was an annoying asshole. Made it so he had to enter his AD password whenever he wanted to unlock his phone and I'd data wipe his phone weekly. He'd ask me about it and I'd tell him it's security policy. I had him convinced that everyone was having the same thing done when they weren't.
Honestly: If I knew the answer I wouldn't tell you. Bypassing someone's security is not the kind of information you should be able to get from XDA.

Sounds more like a jealous boyfriend wants to look at his girls texts.
You gotta admit, it sounds plausible....
I know how to accomplish this, and it is actually quite simple, but I would never share this with some a***ole employer that wants to spy on their employees.

Then why waste the time to post here and talk **** to some guy who might be actually telling the truth and needs to get work info off that phone?

You don't think the whole story is fishy? The way I see it, he has two obvious options:
1. Call the employee. Ask for the pattern.
2. If he refuses, call the cops.
The fact that he is not doing either of these indicates that he does not have a legitimate reason for wanting the info.
