But I like DamageControl personally. I just have a nand of my gutted MNS rom for a quick switch.
I was using DamageControl for awhile but I have to go with DarchLegend because the webkit works properly with apps that use webview.

I just boot to recovery and recover that image I have of another rom with MNS.. takes like 5 miuntes all together. The image I have is unlinked to any google account and is stripped of a lot, just meant for MNS and wireless tether.
i never knew how to get the latest version for the stock of android hehe
I'm running (and loving) DamageControl but I think I'd like to see Darch's Legend version. The only thing is, I'm really not crazy about the idea of wiping all my settings again.

If you are using apps2sd then you might be able to do a quick switch. Make a nandroid backup and that will let you go back if you don't like the new ROM. The apps2sd will mean all your apps are still there.
However, sometimes you even have to wipe the apps off depending witch ROMs you are switching. If you get an app called Titanium Backup then you backup your apps and data. However, the free version makes re-installing a little bit of a longer process but it isn't bad.

Yes, that is a big selling point for me too. It seems Damage hasn't been active for several days. I'm sure he has a life and hopefully the ROM is still alive! I switched to DarchLegend for the webkit apps working right, Friendstream is cool too.

backup using Titanium backup, or mybackup Pro.
also just make a nandroid backup incase it goes bad and you want to go back to a stable setup.

and also it saves your settings going from 2.1-2.1 so all your settings should be how you set them before <3 hooray for convenience!
and from my exp. (ive used both) i would say damage is a bit faster, but im going with darch because you will love the way it looks, has the glossy blackish look rather than just straight up stock. but althought i am experiencing a bit of lag, it will only be a matter of time before darch comes out with a fast enough rom and i can live with the tiny bit of lag that it does have, and i absolutely hate lag. but overall i chose darch, but i do appreciate the work of all you amazing dev's <3
so Darch vs flipz 2.02b?
we should make a new thread and have a poll with these main 2.1 builds....
Chad
I'm back on Damage, DarchLegend went a little insane for me, four times over, no idea what went wrong, when I finally got it up and running once I got my first phonecall the ROM basically fell apart, force closes, couldnt answer calls, everything lagged. Luckily Damage was backed up so I just went back and re situated.

The rom is still alive! I just proposed and am on vacation. I will have a rom out soon with a fixed webkit!
Neither....
It depends on you. Darch rom is based off the HTC Legend rom. which gives you some new features that roms based off of the Eris or just 2.1 its self dont have.
I use darch rom for a daily use.. Looks like v4.1 fixes all my problems not as much lag as before..
DamageControl
I think DamageControl is pretty fast. Im yet to test DarchLegend.

Why is that? The Eris and Hero Share about 98% of software\hardware. We are lucky the Eris Rom got leaked and now we have working 2.1 Roms for everyday use.
Im guessing, if the gmail thing is true, that in a couple of hours (a day tops)we will have that ported to our beloved 2.1 roms for our heroes.

I thought I was the only one saying 100%
My ROM is 100% because it is 100% usable, stable, and can be used easily as a daily ROM, and it was the first one to become that way. There are bugs and problems, but there are ALWAYS bugs and problems in everything, even if you don't notice it. Facebook syncs and links and everything else is great. There are small things in it that need some tweaking, but that's why I keep releasing new versions.

Yeah, I'm thinking of taking the plunge, I just am not as tech-savvy. But a lot of people say "this is a great daily ROM" and then they say things like "fine for some..." so it's just a tad misleading is all I'm saying. To some people losing visual VM is worth it for 2.1, but I'm sure to others (myself excluded) visual voicemail is really cool and they don't want to deal without it. Even though there is a "workaround" so it's a bit weird to me, but I still want to play with it so I think I will see how bad the wipe will be haha.

As soon as i flashed the latest(old now) regaw, i got the rebootloop while plugged in deal. I just flashed back to my previous rom. I would rather not post and make devs look bad. Those are not my intentions, and judging by the numbers i figured it was most likely just me. But the whole popular rom thing is kind of starting to remind me of my iphone consumer theory(everyone else has one, so i want one too). So maybe even if flawwed, since 5000000 other ppl dl it then others who follow the popular vote will most likely feel compelled to follow suit. Dont be a sheep, test for yourself or just mod your own like ive always done as common logic.
I'm sorry to hear you guys are having such trouble with it. I've never heard of anyone not being able to get into the settings menu
Regaw is also my favorite because of it's combination of being super responsive and very stable. I've assembled a rom mod based on regawmod for my hero owning friends and family, I'll just say it's stable enough I have my girl running it although there's no reason it should run any different than RM2.1. If you guys want to give it a try shoot me a pm.
Wish I could be more help, I've just had very little trouble with RegawMOD.
regaw is my favorite because of the stability(over other roms), how heavily themed it is, and the direct support i get from the dev himself.
a fresh wipe and reflash has always fixed any issue ive ever had. but ill wait until next release. treve is emerging with some pretty promising things too.

Hey guys, didn't see this yesterday. I haven't had any troubles with the settings menu either... could I get a logcat of an attempt?
Been running regaw since it was released... No issues at all, loving it and I highly doubt I will switch. Fresh had more bugs than regaw... I have literally found 0 bugs on regaw and im loving it.
ive decided to take pancake 1.5c...the fastest rom there is IMO and customize it and tweak whatever i can.
i know most are going to the 2.1 roms but with the some bugs that plague them i wondered if anybody would have any interest in this before i start working on it?
fastest says who ?
and what bugs some minor quirks here and there but nothing major nothing with going back to 1.5 imho
It's only 1 vote, but I would be. I keep upgrading to various 2.1 ROMs only to find myself going back to 1.5-based ROMs.
My programming skills are non-existent, so I couldn't help any of the development, but I would be happy to test anything you might create.

1.5c is Gumbo. I'm not sure the what version number Papapancake was.
I don't know if my opinion count, but I did like Pancake when it was out. However, after I fresh 2.0 leak, I doubt I will every go back to 1.5 imho. Maybe other might like if 2.0 is not perfect until final release. You might want a poll here.

would you be incorporating the overclocking into the Kernel? That would certainly be nice.
Pancake overclock is obnoxiously fast. I'm running it now.
I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?

The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

How do you get the market to automatically download your apps? Is it another app or backup? It won't even save all of the apps I had downloaded last time. It only seems to save around 8.

The way I see it is CM keeps adding and adding stuff, rather than perfecting. I personally flashed back to CM, but once a true AOSP come out it on!
edit...just want to add that since the merge of 2.3.3 battery is worse, and reboots take longer, speaking of CM7 of course.
