Favorite 2.1 Enhancements - Hero CDMA General

Please share your favorite 2.1 enhancements. There might be stuff we are not aware of.
-U can see your Facebook contacts info in People app
-The "Gallery" app is awesome and u can see your picassa albums too
-New HTC Sense, u can see 7 cards of your 7 screens at once
-Can install Google Nav (no need for sprint nav)
-About 160mb free of memory after install the rom. Wow!
-Wireless Tether (You can share your internet service with any wireless device)
-Spanish language support out of the box (locale)
-Youtube app actually works
-Camera enhancements(now with effects and lots of options)
-Really, really fast

Market is alot nicer and shows screenshots

My Favs are:
Universal Search (not just web search anymore)
Bluetooth file Transfer (finally)
Multiple GMail accounts!!
Full Screen Weather animations
Browser now has Default zoom setting (This has to be my all time favorite addition)
Browser has broader privacy cleaning options
Browser has Most Visited pages tab & History tab (Navigate)
You can sync Last.fm contacts
Google Maps has Labs plugins (Compass Arrow is essential IMHO)

OK, where do I get this rom? I'm on Sprint. I saw a 2.1 rom here somewhere a while back and installed it. I like it but there are things that are broken, which is understandable. Been thinking about looking back here for an update but I've been hearing all this stuff about 2.1 coming out officially and thought I'd wait. Is this the official 2.1? Has Sprint released one?
Even if not, where can I get this one. (Sorry, I'm on the bus or I'd look harder myself).

I run damage control 1.0 and love it very stable and there is a fix or or work around for just about any issues that people have found

The search.
Being able to say "call John Doe" into google voice search without having to use that stupid broken ass voice caller.
Also if you installed the new google maps with navigation you can say something like....
"navigate to pizza"
and it will launch the navigator with a list of the closest pizza places and then will route you after you click one. Awesome.

My favorite thing is the browser. Configurable zoom level, don't have to hit menu to get the address bar, and a single press of the menu button shows the notification bar.

2.0b2? I thought I wanted 2.1?!? My firmware version states 2.1 (though that could just be wishful thinking). Wouldn't 2.0b2 be a step backwards?
And where would I get either of those ROMs?

That's a ROM version, not an Android version. Fresh 2.0b2 and DamageControl 1.0 are both Android 2.1 ROMs.
You should start at the stickies at the top of the forum.

You have to have the main flip clock which is the default one just swype down the lockscreen and don't touch anything you'll see it

Had to drop the one that was there and re-add it. Thanks! Works now...wicked cool. Now if I could get swype to work it would be great, but thats for another day another thread.

It seems like it charges faster from USB. Could be my imagination though, heh.

-Ability to download 2.1 only apps
-Much faster than 1.5
-New Sence optimizations
-Google Nav
-Youtube actually works
-Camara and video is much better
-Better Flash support
-Did i mention that 2.1 is much faster lol

I heard that with Google Nav, there is a way to enable TTS so the directions are spoken to you. I downloaded the Speech Synthesis app from the market and installed it (and ran the app which puts the files in the sdcard), and the directions aren't spoken to me. How do I enable this?
NVM I just found out you have to push Navigate instead of "Get Directions"...

Layars- in Maps one of my favorites that I have been missing since my Blackberry 8130 (I still can't believe that this wasn't built into our version of Google Maps!!)
Market-
Camera- Editing features
Browser
I think everyone else listed all the rest of the things I like!!

Please forgive my ignorance. I mean why would I confuse a firmware/ROM version of 2.1 with and Android version number of 2.1!
I mean version numbers are a dime a dozen aren't they? I have the following to give out from the About Phone thing including:
Firmware Version: 2.1
Baseband Version: 1.04.01.09.21
Kernel Version: 2.6.27-533ce29d [email protected] #742
Build Number: 20091203 Heroc_Generic_WWE #
Software Version: HEROC21-Community-1.8
I mean it's so clear to me now! How could I have missed it!
Sarcasm off - seriously I don't see a straight - this is the Android version in any of those?
Meantime I'll search the stickies tonight - but any help with mapping the above to the best version for me would be appreciated.

Official Update Impressions

Just installed the official update from HTC site (Sweden). Major difference in performance now. Some things i noticed so far:
- Contacts now scrolling smooth, before it would stutter bad.
- All lists scroll smother, including the standard Android lists.
- Lock screen animation smoother.
- All screen transitions seem smother as well, esp the one that appears when you press the "phone" button. Would skip and stutter for me before, now it animates each time.
- phone seem to starts up faster.
- Sense UI of course scrolling smoother and without stutter.
- Entire OS just feels smoother and snappier.
-Pictures in album scrolling much smoother.
- Camera update, you can choose focus point by touching screen and you can set ISO.
Really good update, im actually suprised of how much work seems to have gone into it.
If only HTC had done this when the phone was released, instead of as usual releasing it buggy and receiving bad reviews from the media. Good things though i guess is that from now on the upcoming phones will be superior. Hope they will work on marketing so the general user will notice android, now that the OS is fast, pretty and smooth(which seems to be what the "normal" user , i.e my dad and all his friends, cares about).
This is going to get really interesting, with iPhone 3.1 not being jailbroken it may be a real opportunity for the Hero to offer a credible alternative.
I left WM 2 months ago for an iPhone and am really enjoying the experience but am concerned about iPhone vulnerability at the moment with no JB solution. Luckily I have my work provided Hero in case my iPhone becomes locked.
:-D
Can you set the updated ROM to english? or is it just Nordic languages.
Can you post the exact version and build number?
Got one question for you, drsmisk:
When in the Browser, if you rotate to landscape and press the search button, does the keyboard star jumping and the notification bar start flashing?
(it does this in modacos 2.2 rom)
Build is 2.73.4055 146733 CL#61267
Software version is 1.0.0.A6288
there are several languages to choose from, all nordic languages and also english. I have the OS in english.
And yes, the keyboard and notification bar does jump when in landscape in browser. never noticed that before.
i've just updated using the nordic ROM. All my original languages (I'm Dutch) were present and available in the setup wizard. I don't understand the release of a 'nordic rom'. All languages I had used before are still available. And I have no nordic languages available. Apparantly the update didn't delete your previous languages.
The Hero is now super fast! Faster than my iPhone 3G. Excellent!!!
well, i bought a Dutch Hero, applied that WWE original rom and the WWE leaked update and still had "English (Netherlands)" and other original ones on the language selection screen :/ wish i knew can i kill it and make it WWE :/
I'm running an official release of this update (my device came back from repair and the service center reflashed my device with this new rom)
I agree with the speed improvements.
What I did notice, and I didn't have this problem with the old firmware, was some network problems. A few times a day I get a pop up screen saying I have a network problem and I should try again (both on Wifi and 3G) however, my laptop and my iPhone (all on the same WiFi network) run fine at the exact same time. When I switch the Sim card my iPhone doesn't have network problems but when I switch back my Hero is complaining again. The problem always solves itself again after a few minutes.

nope, only Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. Sorry about that.
can someone test the youtube widget see if you can actually signout now?nasty bug that beens annoying the hell out of me.
Apart from the speed issue, two main problems that many people are facing are:
1) The blurring/pixelating of the contact pics when calling or being called. This looks really ugly!
2) Thumbnails not being generated by the Albums app in certain SD cards, especially microSDHC 8GB class 6 cards, thus making the photo-veiwing experience not so great. It apparently is the same for MCR 2.2. However, works alright with the original 2GB class 2 card that comes with the phone.
Could those of you who have installed and played with the new ROM update or any other newer/custom ROM, please comment of these issues and whether they have been ressolved or not?
Cheers

[Android] Eclair 2.0.1 for the Vogue (Nexus One Bootanimation)

This is an Eclair 2.0.1 build taken from the 2.0.1 sdk image and parts of the droid/milestone/nexus and the launcher/google apps from manup456's dream build. Settings reads this as 2.1 but it isn't. It's just for compatibility with some nexus apps. The nexus one boot screen is also enabled. I had to remove some apps from system/app so it would fit on nand. They can be installed in your android apps folder on your sdcard or through adb or through an android file manager like astro or pushed to /system/app if running a read/write system image or partiton. This build does not sleep with out the hacked suspend kernel found in the kaiser thread.
Youtube video of the Nexus One bootanimation on the vogue
Downloads:
http://breakaux.com/wp-content/uploads/eclair-221209.zip Bundle with new system image. Do not use the included rootfs.img unless your running from the system.sqsh through haret.
Add on apps
http://breakaux.com/wp-content/uploads/eclair-addon-apps.zip
If you don't have the latest basefiles get them at the Sourceforge Android HTC Download Page
Use the newest zImage or nand nbh from dzo @ http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/files/?C=M;O=D
Kaiser thread containing a Dark themed 2.0.1 build which also works for vogue plus link to hacked suspend kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=600154
Start with a blank data.img or let a new one be created. Wipe /data if running from nand before installing.
This takes a couple minutes for first boot. After the setup ends and your home screen appears there will be a little lag until android is done scanning your sdcard for pictures/music. Check logcat and you'll know what I mean. After it is done scanning this build is very fast.
You can thank vilord for rebuilding the libs for eclair and srwalter for updating the libgps.so for donut.
What works:
Calls
Data
GPS
Maps
Youtube
Gmail
gtalk
Market
Contacts Sync
Native Exchange Support
Not working:
Camera
Voice Dialer/Voice Search (fixed as soon as libaudio.so is rebuilt with dzo's source)
Bluetooth
Exchange Calender Sync (I don't use exchange so let me know)
Suspend/Sleep (partial fix using suspend hacked kernel)
You can edit your default.txt or build.prop after the first boot and change the lcd density to 110 if your running in qvga and this will display the whole dialer and music app correctly.
Resources.zip with the Nexus One wallpapers/ringtones in Manups thread. http://www.4shared.com/file/173892052/20801a29/Resource.html
Great to see work on this!
I read you are not looking for bug-reports, and it says vogue only, but I could not resist trying it out on my Kaiser.
It didn't boot, halted shortly after getting to the system image at mdp_dma_to_midi: busy ..

I'm staying with donut for a while. The source for eclair isn't even released so theres not much we can do with it right now. The libs for donut aren't working in this build. This was taken from the generic sdk image and it's lacking a lot of functionality.

And yes, can we please keep this thread to Vogue discussions only? After all, this is the Vogue forum. It's getting a wee bit annoying having Vogue threads hijacked with Kaiser/Polaris discussions.

I am currently running Ion, and CANNOT wait for this bada$$ 2.0 to be polished ; )
Thanks for your hard work devs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well 2.0 is going to be a major over haul from what i can tell. once google drops the source code or a device similar to the vogue comes out with 2.0 it should be a lot easier to port. if we could figure out how to get data working with a cdma vendor ril like the verizon droid we would be in business. we should have a leak soon. the phone will hit the shelves in a week or so. the old sholes dump had a umts ril which i havent tried and doubt it will do anything. anyway the next couple weeks should be interesting.
yea maybe that ril will unfudge my data and undo what the sprint one did... native cdma for verizon will be great
off subject: the desire runs sense UI in either 1.6 or 2.0 from what i gather. so that means it 'should' be compatible with 240x320 , yeah yea i kno we have tattoo but im just saying here is for hoping

If you lost the ability to see the mobile pages then you need to install the latest MT addition from Cyanogen. There was an issue with the first MT add on he put out and fixed it in the second one.
I recommend going back and re applying the MT add on and you should be able to see mobile pages again.
You can also D/L Google Maps 4.0 with built in Buzz support. Just go to the market, click on the downloads tab, and the update should be waiting for you!
Anyone knows why I don't have the update promted yet? Is it US only? (I'm oversea).
Also, if I go to buzz website on my N1, I can see the interface, but if I post a Buzz.. it keep spinning a small wheel in front of it, and it never completes (nor posts my Buzz)
Any ideea?
I got the same issue. Maybe it is because our gmail hasn't been updated with Buzz yet.
update google maps in the market
Anyone else find it subliminally retarded that Google puts the Nexus one behind the Iphone on its Buzz page ?
heh yeah, I noticed that myself...
However, here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/mobile/buzz/ there is an iPhone surrounded by 2 N1's.
Go figure.
I understand google though - people with androids will probably get buzz anyway in some future update (won't be surprised if it will be come a builtin app/link like google goggles) - but the real challenge is for them to get iPhone users to use it, pushing them more towards the google cloud.

I'm quite liking buzz. It's so easy for me to see what people in my area are saying and I can just strike up a conversation with them.
Initially I thought 'How will they get people to leave Twitter to do this' then you realise pretty much everyone is already registered (I'm following people already who have never heard of Buzz!) it's just if they choose to use it.

I had those issues too - read that it might have to do with the accepting terms thing not registered properly so I wiped my Browser cache and rebooted.
Seems to still do it but then later I'll see it was posted. Also seems to do it straight after a reboot, but then become sluggish. Still glitchy I guess
Dayz
Edit - Just updated maps and the Buzz Layer thing seems to work better than the one via mobile google. What will be useful I think once it takes off, is that you can pop over to a place and look for any buzz about traffic or weather problems that people might post from a location.

Thanks. Reflashing the mt addon allowed me to see mobile pages again. Buzz works fine now.
I've updated my Maps application to version 4 via Market, but I am not seeing the Buzz layer in Maps.
I wonder is it because this is being rolled out on a country by country basis?
The buzz layer is not enabled by default, you need to press the options, and then choose layers->buzz.
The easiest way to check if your gmap version is correct is to go to options->about - it should be 4.0.0 (#4046).

That's a Samsung Instinct, I have an HD2! I have rebooted my phone and it keeps tell me the same thing. Anyway to find a .cab of the newest version, this **** is pissing me off.
EDIT: The version that came with my phone is 3.2.1 WTF?! SMFH Tmobile.

The version on the phone isn't as old as the version number makes it look...and it was the most current version available when Google had to provide it to be included in the master ROM's that get loaded on the phones.
I didn't know anything was out past 4.0...but I just went to www.google.com/mobile/maps and downloaded the 4.1 cab from there, you'll find it attached
Thank you Sirp!
I just did something dumb, I d/l what I thought was 4.1 off of Brothersoft website, I check 100 times before I d/l and it said it was 4.1 compatible with all WM device and it has a list. I d/l it and found it, it was 3.0.2, ahhhhh! I guess this 4.1 can overwrite, hopefully.

Yeah...but I haven't figured out how to get to the new navigation stuff yet
EDIT: I just read the descriptions a little better, and realized that the navigation goodies are still android-only. Duh.
But yeah, I do like 4.1 much better overall still
yeah google maps 4.1 is fantastic. I used voice search to find places all over the world even masai mara in africa. The voice tool is exceptional.
Just tried the voice search and its pretty accurate.

ACTUALLY there is a google maps navigation add on or app and its not downloadable for everyone (you just got to find it) as it needs a special key to registered so it can work I would post the link but I DONT think I could post it on XDA as I think it coud be considered warez ... maybe !?!??!?

HTC Apps on CM6

I've had some problems getting HTC apps working in cm6 latest nightly.
I get my apks from DC froyo.
First I tried an easy install which failed.
Then I moved it to the system/app folder and chmod and chowned to make sure the permissions and owners were the same as stock.
Right now the HTC internet browser opens but force closes.
How can I get it working?
Aren't the HTC apps tied to the Sense framework? If so, I don't think it'll be possible to get them working on a non-sense ROM.
I could be completely wrong.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using XDA app.

No you are not completely wrong. You are completely correct. Sense is deeply integrated into Android. It's not like there are just some added libraries. The source code that compiles into the framework.jar and framework-res.apk, etc are directly modified by HTC. This means Sense is no mere skin. It is a complete integration into Android. Regardless, without this framework HTC apps will only run on Sense phones. Some can be ported over but it's a difficult process so most likely the apps you want will not be ported over. Out of curiosity though, which apps are you trying to use on CM6?
If you want Sense, go back to Sense.

Use DC.
Can't use HTC apps without Sense. Please check the FAQ in the future.
if you provide the applications you're trying to run, perhaps alternatives can be suggested for you.
I personally like the HTC Tip Calulator widget....
and the HTC Notes....
But you can't use them on adw.
I don't want an app shortcut, I want a widget.
I prefer AOSP thankyou very much.
I just like the option of having some apps that I got used to.
HTC_ime for example. The keyboard.
Even though I use swype.
The camera app which pwns the stock.
Got flashlight and car panel working.
FM radio and weather would be nice too.
There were some nice Widgets but the only one I miss is the clock.
Any porting tips?

i liked the HTC keyboard as well. I'm assuming that you did your due diligence and found this did not work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7429254#post7429254
4G and FM Radio is not working in CM6 yet.
this is listed in the CM6 OP.
i'm not sure what HTC browser your talking about. perhaps try installing Dolphin HD browser.
last nights CM6 build incorporated a new camera app and deathray (er...Flashlight app w/ widget). just get the nightly build and flash over what you have...i wipe 'cache' and 'dalvik cache' ...you loose no settings.
i use 'MyWeather' but then, i don't care for weather widgets. have you even looked on the android market for this? maybe try browsing from a computer on a site like www.appbrain.com
i use digital clock widget to provide my time date...many folks praise Beautiful Widgets.
here is a post that may be of use..

tips...
- everyone once in a while...copy a nand backup onto your pc (ie: what if you SD card gets lost or borked?)
- read the entire forum for the ROM you're playing with
- use the search function liberally. (both on xda and google)

Thanks for your post, but.
This isn't about anything specific, i simply want to know how to get apps ported, without the java source.
That said, I AM using dolphin, but I prefer the copy-paste that I can only find with HTC sense, I was hoping the browser on stock sense would help.
I've come across that thread, and use Swype without much issue, but having no trackball () makes me wish I had some arrow keys.. Not available in that thread.
Since my OP I have customized ADW and i'm quite pleased with it overall.
Now I just want to be able to use any app I wish. Regardless of alternatives!
Beautiful widgets is good, but has no analog clocks last I checked.
I do use it either way, but again, this isn't about anything specific.
I want to unlock apk's so they work anywhere. Any rom. Not just with HTC apps, but even the touchwiz apps!
Don't care about 4G, and i know that there are bugs being worked out with CM6 but i'm following it closely. On the 8/11 nightly build right now.
Finally, I read too much. I know a lot more than I put on..
Been "playing" with android roms since Dream (especially CM).
The problem which I have won't be solved by simply looking around for a version of the APK that works.
I want to know how they are being ported/unlocked .
If you can help, then thankyou very much!
Otherwise, I don't need your irrelevant tips. (No offense intended)
