I have noticed that the 3G symbol changes to H frequently and then back again, I am presuming some application/process is using the data connection automatically. I have turned off auto updates in everything I can think of. Is there a way of finding out what is using the data connection.

If only this big H symbol (the one on left) is changing - there is nothing to worry about, it`s normal. It means you found better coverage
3G - 2.45 Mbit/s to 3.1 Mbit/s
H (HSDPA) - (1.8 3.6 and 7.2) Mbit/s but mostly you will get 3.6 or 7.2 Mbit/s
If the small one on the right (next to bars with range) appears, it means that data connection turned itself ON.
Now you have to find out which application is doing this.

It changes to H for a few seconds and then reverts back to 3G. I have installed SPB wireless monitor and found that its the system which keeps accessing the data connection. The thing is this only happens when the data connection is active, i.e. if I disconnect the data connection whatever it is, does not re-connect.
No one else seeing this?
I noticed this happening all the time. I could go to bed and the next morning I would check and my connections would be active for 10 hours or so.
So I installed Bandswitch the freeware one.
And i just update everything manually. Bandswitch shuts down idle connections after a set period of time..
Hope this helps....
I started a thread about this too...
Coincidence??
my data has been trying to connect since yesterday but because i have mad an "Offline" profile in my connections i keep getting a dismiss dialog.
Just as a matter of interest did you install anything recently?

I have installed many applications but I have had these on many other WM phones e.g touch pro 2, HD etc and they never did what I am seeing.
There are 2 main clues:
1) Whatever it is that is accessing the data doesn't reconnect if the data connection is closed. Only if the connection is active then it is accessed.
2) SPB wireless monitor reports the culprit as "system" and not any application that I have installed. This is the first time I have had a phone running WM 6.5. Wondered if there is some component of this operating system which need to regularly access data?
This is a snapshot of the SPB wireless monitor from their own website (not my device) but the system component can be seen.

I found a bug in tmobile rom 1.6.2.4 and qtek ROM 1.6.7.1. When access points are out of range they still show up as available. The network "Free WiFi - Be nice!" is NOT in range, yet it continues to appear in the list. Even after a few minutes.
This prevents my software - WiFiFoFum from working properly. Could someone please confirm they also have this problem so I can rule out that its my hardware.
TIA

yes mine does that as well. it also tries to connect to out of range networks, it cycles through them and for some reason it attempts to connect to the "in range" network last.
I think it trying to connect to unavailable ones is normal. This is so it can still connect to a network which is in range but not broadcasting it's SSID. Some people turn off broadcasting the SSID on their wireless routers to prevent others from discovering it.
However displaying networks not in range as available is NOT normal!!! This means that nobody with a Wizard can war drive :-(
I'm pretty sure that I've seen exactly this behaviour on every HTC device I've owned, i.e. it sits there stating that it's connected to my home network despite me being 200 miles away.
The WZC list has always been a bit screwy thats not an HTC problem its MS's. Like the first time you open the dialog it might take a few secs to show real information. However this bug is different because it continues to show APs as available. Only way to clear the available list is to power cycle wifi (or power cycle device which does the same).
I'm not convinced that this bug (if it is one) effects war driving....
Indie, using beta's of your latest app all ap's located at the start of a scanning run are located correctly.....It's after a few miles I start to have problems, and the problems I have are ap's located BEFORE I actually reach them....perhaps the wizards wifi drivers are telepathic
I've been using the Wizard for War Walking for a month now with Wififofum. If it hits 32 Ap's connected Wififofum crashes. The only way to clear out the list of AP's to start Wififofum with the wifi off, then close Wififofum. Restarting with the wifi on will make it behave normally.
In practice I switch the wifi on and off to disconnect AP's. This is often every 20-30meters in central london. Some places there are so many AP's that simply starting Wififofum cause it to crash. The Wizard can't handle crashes so a reset is required - up to 90 seconds. Sometimes within a few minutes of the last crash.
I've collected 5000 AP's so far but quite frankly, I'm somewhat pi**ed off with it.
I tried posting this on the Wififofum forumebut their email confirm registration process failed and I've run out of email addresses to register with. I also emailed them twice as I assumed it was Wififofum bug.
Sounds like 32 is the maximum number of APs that can be in the drivers internal access point list. Then perhaps when it sees the 33rd it crashes because it tries to add it off the end of the array? Hmm I didn't receive your emails about this bug. If you give me the username you signed up with I can activate your account. We need someone like you on our forum
I just tested the I-mate 1.1.9.3 ROM and it also has the problem. I was hoping to find a ROM that doesnt have the problem so we could take the wifi driver from it and install it via wififofum however it doesnt look likely we'll find one.

Usually if a program crashes most of the device becomes unresponsive, including the today screen if you manage to get to it with the hangup button. But most of the time the Start menu still responds. From there you still manage to go to Parameters, System, Memory, Running programs and kill the unresponsive app.
Works 90% of the time, this already saved me quite a lot of resets, like when I stupidly run VisualGPSce forgetting to turn on Bluetooth. This Stupid app freezes all the device until it manages to open the COM port, which obviously never happens...
Just to confirm that with the lastest beta of wififofum my QTEK 9100:
Rom verson:1.1.9.3
Rom Date: 9/16/05
Radio version:01.01.10
Protocol ver :4.0.13.16
ExtRom: 1.1.9.106
works just fine, no problems at all with war driving.
Drewy, run wififofum and let it detect your home access point or wireless router if you have one. Then power off the access point or router. Then watch wififofum continue to show the wireless network as in range. Examine the LastSeen column.
The reason you might think wififofum is ok as wififofum actually only updates the coordinates of a network if the signal gets stronger - that is for teh file it makes when you do File->save. However if you use autolog mode then it wont work correctly it will produce a file with every AP at every coordinate, after the AP has been found.
OK I concur.
Once it's detected 32 ap's that's your lot!
Is there perhaps a way around this (within wifofofum) , just a few quick ideas:
1, programatically remove ap's from the list when signal starts to decrease.
2, up the limit to something bigger than 32, if this figure is not hard coded.
3, flip the wifi radio off then back on once the list hits 30 or something...
Only idea's have no idea of the advantages/disadvantages of any at this stage, anyone think any of these (or others) are worth pursuing?
I dont think its possible to clear out the driver's list. Since when you get the list from the driver it gives you a copy.
THe power off on thing would work to prevent it reaching the 32 limit, however it doesnt help the problem that APs are still seen as available when they arnt.
We can hope there will be a new wifi driver in the new ROM. And then we can extract it and I can include it in WiFiFoFum and allow people to use the fixed driver on any ROM version. Is there a way to issue a bug report to HTC?
are we sure that it is a bug and not normal operation of mobile 5.0? has anyone been able to try any other mobile 5.0 devices ?
my dopod 838 does this as well... it cycles thru all networks [shows unavailable as available kinda misleading...]
I have the same problem with Universal (Qtek 9000) also :?
I thinks it's better I post in Universal forum

i'm trying to use my vario II to connect my laptop to the internet via bluetooth link to my vario that is on 3G.
It doens't work. the connection is fine, it goes to verifying username password, disconnects saying a device connected to the network isn't functioning.
i called up tmobile, and they say they do not allow laptop connections via 3G via the mobile phone (they can apparently detect it?) on their lowest web and walk plan.
there has to be some way to work around this??
basically just want:
vario II connected to 3G, and my laptop being online via the phone whether it be through USB or bluetooth- preferably bluetooth.
any tips?
So have you paired the lappy with phone and set the connectio on the lappy to use the dial up network service? If so what number are you set to dial? Should be *99#, no username or password. I think that's all you need to do.
As for T-Mob detecting it they can look at the browser ID in the http requests, but you can change that in Firefox using the user agent switcher extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/
The User Agent String for Pocket IE on the Vario2 is:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; MDA Vario/2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)
However a detailed look at the browser headers shows that there are other differences between a desktop firefox2 request and a Vario one: PocketIE sends the following as well:
UA-pixels: 240x320
UA-color: color16
UA-OS: Windows CE (Pocket PC) - Version 5.1
UA-CPU: x86
and
x-wap-profile: "http://www.htcmms.com.tw/tmo/mdavario-2.0.xml"
and I can't see how to make firefox mimic that. It might be worth seeing what Opera Mobile and Opera Mini send, they might be easier to spoof. But as things stand I don't know how make browser requests indistinguishable, so you should be careful. If you keep the data low they might not look, but it's not a chance I would take apart from seeing if I could.
If you wanted to make it completely impossible for TMob to know what you're up to you could set up a VPN to an internet connected PC you own and use it as a proxy. I believe it can be done but I've not got round to trying.
thanks for the response patp,
the problem isn't in browsing itself-- i don't even get that far.
i hit connect, i see it connect to my phone, verifies username and password, gets to "connecting to network" and then dies, giving the error:

doesn't get any further. its the right phone number, the right modem initialization string. just doesn't finish the connection.
try setting the apn to general.t-mobile.uk in the wireles modem settings (it's in the start menus somewhere)
The bluetooth has a tendency to be flaky. I suggest using a usb cable and PDANET for a nice reliable connection, rather than wasting time trying to get BT to work...

wireless modem over bluetooth now enabled! woohoo!
it works liek a charm now!
here's one more question-- it seems my modem speed is restricted to 115.2kbps, i can't set the limit any higher. i'm actually reaching these speeds so its only capped by the communication speed between bluetooth or usb cable to my PC- as the modem speed can only be set that high.
any idea as to whether its possiblke to raise this limit?
cheers!

Are you sure this speed setting has any effect on the actual communication speed? In my practice, it hasn't had any.

i have no clue. it just seems like quite a coincidence that my download speed caps off at about 100-120kbps, and it says in my dial up conneciton that i'm connected at 115.2kbps.
maybe it is just a coincidence?
i just downloaded another test file though and i hit 28kb/s consistently, which is closer to 240kbps. maybe you're right...

what do you mean? i have it set to general.t-mobile.uk.
that's right right?
I've done this, what you do is you create a standard DUN connection using the bluetooth modem (which should be installed automatically as long as phone has a DUN service as part of the BTooth services)
You then 'connect' use dial number of *99# leave uname and password blank and thats it, got it working on 2 fones via 2 different networks one of which is tmob.
You dont make any changes to the phone settings except to turn BT on (obviously)

the phone wifi is connected, however, no data seems to be able to download - i.e. cannot surf the net, cannot check email nothing zilch.
what's going on?? anyone has this problem with their samsung i780?
thx
the WIFI version is IEEE 802.11 b/g

h/w 1.0
it connects to any FREE WIFI, but doesnt surf or cannot download any pages.
also i'm running realvga on 96
can anyone assist please??
PROBLEM WITH WIFI Surfing...
Phone's ROM Version and WIFI version:
PDA: i780 DXHC4
PHONE: i780 DXHC4
wifi: s/w: 1.0.0.0
h/w: 1.0
the problem I HAVE is that WIFI CONNECTS OKAY and DETECTS NETWORK OKAY, however, I CANNOT surf and/or download any DATA using Internet Explorer. It SOMETIMES download, but VERY VERY SLOW.
Can I get some help please????
I tried another phone HTC Touch with WIFI, and no problems at all.
I have exactly the same problem...
I just bought the phone, and i had the surfing working through wlan once, but now it doesnt work. Wifi connection is ok, i can also ping the device from the wireless-side.
tried to manually enter dns address, no help.
I also had this problem, but after installation of realVGA and SPBbackup, it somehow works again. I am keeping my fingers crossed though, because I don't know for how long this will keep working. Hopefully I wont have this problem again.
The problem started after only a couple of days use. I had made use of wifi with no problems, surfing the net. After trying some connections via poor access points, I could still connect to my home network, but I could not open any internetpage (in IE and in opera).
You could try installing realVGA and SPBBackup like I did, but I'm not sure that this was really the solution to the problem. I didn't try anything else as far as know.
i got it to work now. i made some changes to network settings that should only be related to gprs or wap. change to my internet instead of my wap.
or dont touch anything if it works
still no luck
I had same problem. Cannot connet to internet at home but it was ok at work. It didnt worked with firmware C1. I had some problems with E1 too but somehow it works now. What WiFi router do you have?
Im having the exact same problem and ive tried fiddling with the connection settings also, but no luck so far. :-(
I wanted to try that realVGA thing, however it says that it might mess up the phone if used with other than eng language, so ill pass on that one for now..
I might have found the solution, ill be back with the details if it keeps working. :-D
So i shot these pics of everything network related i could find in my phone:

I hope this will be useful even though its in Danish, but the basic stuff like "Network Adapter" etc is almost the same in Danish (Netværkskort) so it shd be possible to figure out which is what.

wifi connection ss i780
i got a similar problem with ss i780 but am trying the solution i have read..thanks will let yu know if it works
same here with me.. using LGKS20.. cannot surf the website but still can connects the wifi..
For i780 Wifi...If network connected successfully and still you are not able to surf, then it might posible the your you had select "Work" to Network Adaptor connects.. Please goto wifi menu=>Network Adapter =>select Internet
if problem not solved then it might be with wifi router. i.e. it may uses proxy.
Following proxy works for many gateways and it also works for me.
You can set proxy by clicking Samsung Wifi adapter..=>Use Specific IP Address=>
IP => 192.168.1.(1 to 249)
Subnet mask => 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway => 192.168.1.1
Please let me know what happened

Hi,
Any idea what this "G" (GPRS???) icon stands for in the notification area...? It's like faded icon.
I got this since I installed Microsoft Marketplace which didn't work and removed back.
I also get a message prompt that a GPRS on my Home Network could not be estalished.

that's exactly it, "G" stands for GPRS
A greyed out G or 3G shows that although the phone has picked up a GPRS/3G data carrier, it's not able to be used - ie the network has said data isn't available or forbidden.
The connection will still usually work as the phone will just try again to authenticate when required.
Usually seen when the mobile network is having problems, or when switching between roaming partners, it sometimes takes a while for the new network to accept a data connection.

Thank you handsomedog...! I was worried if any file(s) are corrupted, but if the greyed icon is OK, then i should try to find out what's happening. A hardreset did not help.
I was still be unable to connect to GPRS.
I did upgrade to ROM 3.27.4.3 and GPRS is working now.
greyed out g mean gprs roaming
you are roaming and the network you are roaming on support gprs
but before you can use it you may have to set the apn to whatever the network use
to get data
mind you roaming and using data can be expensive
After I disconnect my GPRS services, my HD keeps trying to connect with GPRS and it gives me an error message: "THERE IS A PROBLEM CONNECTING TO THE GPRS SERVICE IN YOUR REGISTERED HOME NETWORK".
Like 1 week ago, this was not the case.
Can anyone tell me what is this wififodelay wakelock, and block before sleep ? Thank you

Your Wi-Fi scans because it's on, just like Bluetooth. There are two ways to reduce the battery usage. First, set your phone to be on static IP on the network. Secondly, adjust how often it scans (rooted devices only).

Is the wireless actually enabled though? The only option I can think of when you say "turn off if not connected" is the option to disconnect if the internet is unavailable. In this case, you aren't connected but the wireless is still scanning for networks. You need to toggle WiFi off completely.

8 hours on battery. All time on wifi in home signal always full, and 11 minutes that wakelock i don't get it what is causing this problem.
